Nearly 200 Publications and Counting

We are thrilled to share that our Division is on pace to surpass 200 publications in the 24-25 academic year. This milestone reflects the extraordinary dedication of our hospital medicine faculty. Their work spans a wide range of topics, from clinical innovation to medical education and health systems improvement, all with the shared goal of advancing patient care and making our community stronger.

This level of scholarly output is a testament not only to the talent within our division but also to the deep commitment our faculty have to improving medicine through research, collaboration, and curiosity. We couldnʼt be prouder of the impact they are making, both on paper and in practice.

Expanding Partnerships and Sharing Knowledge

Weʼve had the incredible opportunity to welcome visitors from around the world, expanding our knowledge and learning from others about best practices in hospital medicine. These partnerships have offered valuable new perspectives on how hospitalist care is delivered in different settings. This year, we were honored to host two visitors from Japan and one from Chile. We feel truly fortunate to engage in these global exchanges and discover new ways to grow, collaborate, and learn from one another.

CARE Diagnostic Clinic

2

The new CARE Diagnostic Clinic is a collaboration between our Hospital Medicine and Medical Oncology divisions. Patients are referred to the CARE Diagnostic Clinic if they have suspected cancer based on initial image findings. This expansion of the CARE Clinic is meant to help patients receive quicker clarity and understanding of their diagnosis. We're excited about the opportunities this clinic will provide our patient population and community.

NEWEST TEAM MEMBERS

Welcome the Newest #CUDHM Team Additions

We want to give a warm welcome to our newest team members! While these individuals may be new Advanced Practice Providers, they all previously completed our Advanced Practice Fellowship graduating this past March (graduation photo pictured the the right). We are thrilled to have them join the team full time and look forward to supporting their continued growth in Hospital Medicine.

Staff Highlight - Marketing

Kelsey Hussey, BA

Kelsey is the creative force behind our divisionʼs digital presence. As our website and digital content senior specialist, she plays a key role in elevating our marketing efforts through internal communications, social media, website updates, and graphic design. Her work helps ensure our teams and their accomplishments are celebrated in a cohesive and impactful way. She also helps to ensure our team has a hub for all of our clinical updates to ensure everyone is up to date.

Kelsey is also in the final stretch of completing her Master of Science in Marketing, with graduation coming up this August. A lifelong learner, sheʼs excited to continue applying her growing expertise to strengthen the divisionʼs outreach and visibility. Beyond her core role, Kelsey is actively involved in leadership opportunities across the Department of Medicine, including supporting the Mentorship Program and serving on the Wellness Leadership Team to promote staff well-being and connection.

Patient Experience Highlight

Set, Meet, Own!

UCHealth has gone live with a system-wide "Set, Meet, Own" patient experience responsiveness framework. Try to use this strategy throughout your patient encounters!

How can you implement a similar strategy?

Do your best to explain who hospitalists are, how often theyʼll see the patient, how patients can get in touch with them, and who provides care after hours. Rise to patient expectations by taking time, when possible, to round in the afternoon with vulnerable patients. This can be a great way to increase visibility for hospital medicine. And when youʼve completed something for a patient, claim the credit you deserve! Verbalizing wins helps reinforce to patients that we are responsive to their needs.

Recent Speaking Opportunities

If interested in joining the above effort or leading your own, join the monthly DHM Patient Experience Task Force! Email Dr. Hillary Western for more details. Our CUDHM faculty are engaging in thought leadership across academic medicine. SPRING SPOTLIGHT

Delabeling Patients with a Penicillin Allergy

Goal Reached!

We achieved our goal of delabeling >5% (126 patients) in just one year!

Over the past year, hospitalist Dr. Anita Moudgal led an initiative to safely remove inaccurate penicillin allergy labels from patient records. With the collaboration of colleagues Tard Ward, NP, Anjeli Kalra, MD, Misha Huang, MD, and the broader hospital medicine team, they successfully delabeled 126 patients, a meaningful step toward improving antibiotic stewardship and patient care.

This all started with a study at University of Colorado Hospital - Anschutz Medical Campus. We collected baseline data from May 1, 2022 – May 1,2023. There were 2,067 hospitalizations for 1,470 patients with an active penicillin allergy during hospitalization during this period. Our baseline data showed that 14 patients (1%) underwent penicillin delabeling. After our intervention, we delableled 126 patients (8%) in one year, exceeding our goal of 5%.

The study emphasizes that a hospitalist driven penicillin allergy delabeling pathway can safely and efficiently increase penicillin allergy delabeling.

"I am extremely proud of our accomplishments with this QI initiative. I am so grateful for my wonderful DHM colleagues for playing a vital role in delabeling low-risk penicillin allergies. This has significantly improved our antimicrobial stewardship and overall patient care!" - Anita Moudgal, MD
