Curriculum Highlight 4

Hello from sunny, beautiful Denver! We are so happy to be enjoying the outside and relishing the sun. We are poised to graduate our 113th fellow at the end of this summer, and we could not be more excited! We are collecting data about where our graduated fellows have gone post-fellowship, and it is incredible to see. 72% of fellows who have graduated from our program have accepted jobs within the university system. 72% of those who have accepted jobs in the university system have stayed for 2 or more years. Other graduates have accepted opportunities stretching across the country from California to Washington DC! This newsletter will highlight some of our amazing alumni and the ways they are serving their communities.

The application period for the March 2024 cohort is open as of July 1st and will close on September 30th. We will be accepting six fellows to this cohort. We would love for you to spread the word about the program to any interested APP, APP student, and your alma mater. Please direct them to our website!

CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHT

DEI Curriculum

Scott Saunders, MD is a hospitalist and addiction medicine consultant at the University of Colorado Hospital. He has been on faculty at the University Hospital since 2018 and has an interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and medical education. Those interests overlapped when an APP Fellow requested more formalized teaching around DEI topics.

Dr. Saunders created a longitudinal curriculum that works to build empathy for marginalized patient populations commonly encountered in hospital medicine and to discuss best practices for their inpatient care. These populations include those facing homelessness, patients with substance use disorders, and patients who identify as LGBTQ+. While not every marginalized population is represented, APP Fellows are taught translatable skills that allow them to identify the needs of different patient populations and to approach their care with curiosity and understanding.

Dr. Scott Saunders presented to our division last month covering the topic of how to integrate traumainformed care for LGBTQ+ Inpatient Care.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Eleanor Haring: Eleanor is an alumnus of our APF program currently working in outpatient pulmonology at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Eleanor grew up in Carbondale and was born at the hospital that she now works at!! Eleanor completed the physician assistant program at the University of Colorado at Denver then returned to complete the APF. She worked as the lead hospitalist APP for about 7 years before transitioning into outpatient pulmonology. She is one of only three PAs pulmonary care to the Valley View community. Outside of working, Eleanor enjoys the outdoors with her husband and two adorable children; she loves to hike, bike and raft.

Bree Naibauer: We are delighted to shine the spotlight on one of our remarkable alumni, Bree Naibauer, who completed the advanced fellowship in June 2014. Bree was very challenged during her time. Being older than most doctors and having 4 kids made things more difficult. However, the support of her colleagues and the medical staff made it possible for her to finish and thrive!

Bree’s journey since then has been nothing short of exceptional. She made history as the first Advanced Practice Provider (APP) selected to collaborate with the nocturnists, showcasing her exceptional skills and dedication to patient care. Presently, Bree can be found at Littleton Adventist Hospital, where she works tirelessly during the night shift as the sole in-hospital provider in the ICU. Her unwavering commitment has not gone unnoticed, as she was recently honored as the Provider of the Year by her peers. Bree attributes her success and growth to the invaluable experience gained during the fellowship. Lastly, Bree congratulates everyone involved in fellowship - especially the leadership team - for their continuous efforts in enhancing and nurturing the fellowship program. Their commitment to improvement has played a significant role in making the fellowship what it is today—an empowering platform that helps medical professionals like Bree Naibauer thrive and make a difference in their respective fields. Bree applauds the dedication and the success of all the alumni and current fellows.

Looking forward, we are excited to have a full cohort of six fellows starting in September 2023. Many moving from other parts of the country. We are thrilled to welcome them to the team!

Anna Quackenboss Pond graduated from CU Anschutz with her Acute Care NP degree in May of 2023. Her experience includes 7 years of nursing at UCHealth, including Emergency and ACE medicine.
