Solution Focused Approaches

Solution-Focused approaches which build on client, family, agency, or community strengths are proving more powerful and hopeful in encouraging change than traditional problemfocused methods of assessment and treatment. This course will provide a basic introduction to the theoretical foundations and treatment methods of a solution-focused approach and encourage participants to adapt and apply the model in their thinking and their work with challenging clients, peers, and organizations.

DBT Skills 1: Core Mindfulness

The purpose of this presentation is to dive deeper into the DBT Skills module: Core Mindfulness. This will be one of four programs in which each DBT skills module is presented in more detail than an introductory DBT training program. The program will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of what mindfulness is, how to practice for themselves, and how to teach others. Participants will learn about the “What” and the “How” skills; states of mind, being present, judgements, and “Walking the Middle Path”. This program is highly experiential with participants practicing skills live with time for questions and processing.

7, 2024 9am - 1pm

Facilitating Effective Groups

Group work is a common practice method utilized in today’s social service agencies to affect service clients’ individual growth and social functioning. This introductory workshop will explore the stages of group development, types of groups, practical “do’s” and “don’ts” of group facilitation, and best practices of a trauma-informed, gender-responsive approach. This training is designed for those new to group facilitation or those who have not had formal education and training in this area. At the end of this training, attendees will know and understand the stages of group development; the importance of screening and matching group participants; know at least three “do’s” and don’ts” of group facilitation and be able to apply best practices of group facilitation in a trauma-informed, gender-responsive environment.

Financial Empowerment in the Social Work Universe

The Financial Empowerment in the Social Work Universe seminar aims to improve financial equity and close the racial wealth gap by improving the financial well-being of social workers and other helping professionals through holistic self-care; inclusive of financial health, recommendations on integrating financial education, strategy, and skill development in practice with participants.

Building Blocks to Effective Parenting

Welcome2Reality

This course is based on promoting retention. We relate learning how to be an effective co-parent to learning your ABC’s. This makes the content easy to understand and remember, which also makes the content accessible to a culturally diverse population. Individuals with children who are experiencing separation, divorce, or any other type of family restructuring come from all backgrounds. The goal of this training is to educate these diverse individuals about the impact of family restructuring on children that transcends many cultures. No matter what background participants come from, most participants can relate to learning the alphabet in grade school. This is why we have chosen to relate teaching effective co-parenting skills to that foundational teaching; offering strategies and tools for engaging and working with clients who are parents and ensuring that they are effective.

November 7, 2024 9am - 12pm

Reiki 1

Hilary Rudenauer (Reiki Master Teacher)

Join Hilary Rudenauer, Reiki Master Teacher, to learn the history, theory, and applications of Reiki, a Japanese healing technique. In addition to these foundational topics, we will discuss how Reiki can be used to prevent burnout and support the therapeutic process. Upon completion of this training, participants will be certified Reiki 1 practitioners.

Breathwork for Mental Health

The course combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and an understanding of the ethical considerations enabling clinical social workers to integrate yoga therapy effectively into their practice by broadening their knowledge of the applications and contraindications for breathwork techniques for clients with mental health diagnoses. It aligns with the educational objectives that equip social workers with a diverse range of tools to support their clients and empower them with tools that promote holistic well-being. This is essential for meeting the professional duty of social workers to work within their designated scope of practice and refrain from utilizing these techniques without a comprehensive understanding of their physiological, energetic, and psychological effects.

Unboxing Ourselves and Our Clients: Becoming LGBTQIA+ Allies and Advocates

It is human nature to place people in identity “boxes”: it serves as a survival mechanism, informing us of who we believe is like us and who isn’t; who we want a relationship with, and who we don’t. Identity boxes also uphold stereotypes and prevent us from truly knowing one another, from forming connections, or being potential allies, colleagues and friends. The question is no longer whether our practice includes people who identify as LGBTQIA+, but whether this aspect of our identity can be safely shared, and how we can intentionally create workspaces where these identities are welcomed. Let’s talk openly about the language we use when we discuss sexuality and gender, about the lens of heteronormativity we are trained to see the world through, and about how to include sexual and gender identities as part of the whole of who we are with awareness, respect and openness. This workshop provides participants with a clear understanding of sexual orientation, sexual identity, and gender identity. This training is appropriate for participants with any level of knowledge regarding these identities and offers straightforward, accessible, open discussion with opportunities for questions to be asked and answered. Accurate language and concrete tools to be effective allies and advocates will help practitioners in respectfully addressing sexual and gender identities.

Date Time

November 18, 2024 9am - 12:30pm 3.5

Family of Origin

This training is designed for participants to learn and practice how a person’s family of origin influences their current functioning, relationships and decision making. A close review of birth order and sibling position will give context to current functioning, decision making and how intimacy is created. Family structure creates a foundation for lives and creates legacies. This training offers clinicians options to assist clients in keeping the family legacies that work for them and letting go of the ones that do not.

Real Food For Thought: Considering the Role of Nutrition in Mental Health

We each make hundreds of decisions about food every single day! These choices go beyond satisfying hunger and generating energy—they also play a crucial role in one’s overall mental health and well-being. This seminar serves up a feast of fascinating insights! The menu features: the power of nutrients and their critical role in brain function and emotional balance; the challenges of stress and its marked impacts on nutrition; the altering influences of nutritional status and epigenetic changes on mental well-being and the treatment of mental illness; and an abundant offering of supportive nutritional guidance and resources. A plate full of new perspectives on the dynamic relationship of nutrition and mental health will enhance case conceptualizations, create more treatment opportunities, and support empowered health and healing for both clients and the clinician’s own self-care. Know the ingredients and follow the recipe! Date

DBT Skills 3: Emotion Regulation

The purpose of this presentation is to dive deeper into the DBT Skills module: Emotion Regulation. This program will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of when to use emotional regulation skills, how to practice for themselves, and how to teach others. Specific skills covered will include: check the facts, problem solving, opposite action, PLEASE, and ABC mastery. This program is highly experiential with participants practicing all skills live with time for questions and processing.

Maintaining Composure in the Face of Hostility: For Staff

Participants will learn how to recognize and regulate their emotional reactions when faced with emotionally charged (anger, rage, rudeness) situations and people. They will explore the role their nervous system plays, identify specific triggers, and learn to respond instead of reacting in these situations. They will also practice simple, yet powerful, de-escalation skills to use in situations of conflict and aggression. Skills utilized will include centering, grounding and calming techniques based in mindfulness and emotional intelligence principles.

Healing From Sexual Trauma with Considerations of Gender Identity

Limiting group mindsets and norms related to gender are significant when considering sexual trauma and recovery. In this full-day training, Stefan J. Simanovich, LCSW will discuss the layers of sexual trauma and gender from a lens that includes the mental, emotional, physical and collective body. As a group, we will explore how gender identity relates to sexual traumatization and one’s healing process, patterns of distress caused by sexual trauma and clinical integrative strategies and approaches to support individuals in their healing. Learning will take place through didactic teaching, group discussion and case presentations. Integrative approaches discussed include: EMDR therapy, somatic experiencing, embodiment techniques, hypnosis/hypnotherapy, regression therapy, grounding techniques, and ego state/parts work therapies.
