Trauma-Informed Mindfulness: Practices to Promote Regulation and Resilience
Vamsi Koneru, Ph.D.
Trauma is an event or series of events that is highly stressful, profoundly difficult to integrate and can leave us feeling overwhelmed, helpless, and profoundly unsafe. It has been said that trauma “leaves traces on our minds and emotions, our capacity for joy and intimacy, and even our biology and immune system” (van der Kolk). Individuals who have endured trauma can experience significant psychological distress marked by intrusive memories and flashbacks, tendencies to avoid reminders of their trauma, and physical hyperarousal as well as intense feelings of shame, self-blame, and guilt. Offering mindfulness practices to individuals who have experienced trauma can be a highly effective approach to support well-being and recovery. However, asking individuals to pay focused, sustained attention to their experience can be challenging and potentially dysregulating, thus, it is important to offer mindfulness meditation in a trauma-informed manner. In this workshop, we will explore theory, engage in practices and develop skills to effectively and safely support trauma survivors.

The Other Gender: Using a Trauma-Informed Framework with Men
Chris
Dorval, LCSW, LCDP, LCDCS, ICADC
Our society has often turned a blind eye to trauma’s impact on males and subsequently trauma has been focused on as a “female issue.” The social assumption of men being perpetrators of trauma and the social acceptability of male trauma and violence has led to desensitization to the effect of trauma on males. As a result, there have been continuing cycles of trauma that continue to negatively impact our society as a whole. This has never been truer than in the realm of trauma treatment, where historically research has been done and interventions designed on female populations. This presentation will offer a look at traumainformed practice that is responsive to the unique challenges and strengths of men.

Maximizing Personal and Professional Vitality in These Changing Times
Germayne B. Tizzano, Ph.D.
This workshop provides you an opportunity to take a break, and through a relaxed yet dynamic setting, you can look at default patterns that may be getting in the way of living an enhanced life. By gaining a greater understanding of the neurobiology of the brain, we cannot only understand measures to be taken based on agency; we can also provide clients with a model for change. This workshop will offer the chance to experiment with various activities that can strengthen the power of our vagal nerve, support our core intuition, and examine measures to support brain health.
Essential Tools and Resources for the Blossoming, Resilient Survivor
Germayne B. Tizzano, Ph.D.
The ACE study creates a disheartening trajectory for the victims of child abuse. Highly entrenched survival patterns for coping with childhood abuse leads to long-term severe physical, emotional, and relational difficulties. Significant risks for cardiovascular, immune suppression, diabetes, depression, anxiety disorders, and suicidal risk are some among many conditions faced by the innocent victim. A conscious and deliberate effort is needed to create changing neural pathways to support health, well-being, and fulfillment. Changing the familiar is difficult, especially for persons gravely impacted by childhood trauma. This workshop embraces the right and belief that change is entirely possible. We are in exciting times with a vastness of emerging knowledge and information on neurobiology, vagal health, and mindbody system interventions. This workshop addresses the underpinnings of childhood trauma on the mind-body system, including the part of the brain that controls whether stress and trauma are healed. Participants will gain an understanding of the solutions and practices that support the unique needs of the trauma survivor in achieving their health and recovery. This program includes a review of readiness and motivational interviewing for change.

Clinical Interventions to Reduce the Intensity of Mental Health Symptoms Associated with Imposter Syndrome
Dr. Lillian Gibson, PhD
Fast forward thinkers, executives, engineers, therapists, nurses and individuals in various helping professions with years of experience often fall victim to Imposter Syndrome. This condition does not discriminate against highly competent individuals from all walks of life. Imposter syndrome is often a debilitating condition where individuals are trapped in their own negative thoughts, skepticism of self, and self-doubt. Learn more about this condition and how to unleash clients from their own tombs of worry. Despite the rapid and creative growth of the workforce, feeling stuck appears to be a common encounter many professionals face. Such feelings are often associated with not being good enough, not being smart enough, and not feeling confident in one’s contributions to their work teams, employers and/or colleagues. It’s time to help individuals get unstuck and feel aligned to their strengths and talents. This seminar will be life-changing for professionals who wish to uncover their confidence in their skills and hone their professional voice. It will cover effective CBT and Act interventions to overcome and even utilize Imposter Syndrome to move forward in life.
Abigail’s Revenge: How the Women’s Movement Shook Up America
Rhea Hirshman
In the spring of 1776, Abigail Smith Adams warned her husband John of a “Ladies’ rebellion” if women’s concerns were not addressed as Adams and colleagues debated a “new code of laws” for the fledgling democracy. But the future president mocked his wife, dismissing her pleas as “despotism of the petticoat.” Two and a half centuries later, their correspondence reminds us both of how far we have come and how far we have yet to go in achieving gender justice. While virtually all jobs and schools are now open to women, gender-based violence remains a pervasive problem. While women serve as generals and admirals in the armed services, the right to control one’s own body is increasingly under attack. Today, we will explore how progress has been made – and where it has stalled. We will also confront and examine conscious and unconscious assumptions about gender and gender roles and examine some of the myriad — and often unexpected — ways that those assumptions affect our lives.
