COVID-19 Training Alert: At the Connecticut Women’s Consortium, the safety of our staff, participants, and trainers continues to be our number one priority. Given continued concerns over COVID-19 we are offering a mix of remote and on-site live training sessions. All training formats are noted within the catalog and during registration.

A couple of things to note: 1. Per the National Association of Social Workers - CT Chapter and the CT Department of Public Health, all virtual trainings count toward your in-person CEC requirement.

2. The town of Hamden has instituted a mask mandate, all in-person training registrants will be required to wear a mask in the building at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For more information about the Hamden mask mandate, please visit https://www.hamden.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=377 3. If fewer than 15 people are signed up for an on-site training two weeks ahead of the training date, the training may convert to a virtual format or be cancelled. All participants will be notified of format/location changes within 10 days of the training start date.

Diversity in the Workplace Mara Gottlieb, PhD, LMSW This highly interactive, information-rich and experiential workshop will address the concepts of diversity and multiculturalism in their broadest sense, to include identities of race, ethnicity, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, ability, body size, addiction recovery, and more. Participants will have opportunities to reflect on their own identity “landscape” and how these identities impact our professional work. We will address notions of “passing” or identity invisibility; how encouraging authentic self-expression leads to better work outcomes; how to foster a respectful work environment in which questions are safe to be asked and answered and where curiosity is encouraged; the nature and impact of micro-aggressions, and additional topics proposed by the group.

The workshop is a unique opportunity to learn more about ourselves and our colleagues, and ultimately to form professional relationships based in authenticity and respect, leading to greater work satisfaction, more trusting relationships, and better agency outcomes.

A Healing Journey of the Bilingual Self: In Search of the Language of the Heart Maria Elena Oliva, LCSW For a bilingual client, psychotherapy experienced in a second language is complicated. It does not always provide healing or helpful outcomes. Much can be misunderstood and much can be missed altogether. Language is in the spotlight when we consider therapy with bilingual clients. Yet, language is rarely the focus of psychotherapeutic work that is referred to as the “talking cure.” This workshop will examine the challenges that the bilingual individual and therapist must navigate within their internal world of dual languages and how these impact treatment. We will understand the first language, the mother tongue, as the language of emotions, and the second language as the language of detachment and distance.

Responding to Intimate Partner Violence: Screening & Intervention for Behavioral Health Professionals Ashley Starr Frechette, MPH Linda Blozie Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a public health issue that affects millions of Americans. Intimate partner violence is associated with significant health problems for victims. “Anxiety, depression, diabetes, hypertension, sexually transmitted diseases, serious injury, and substance use, all of which have long-term physical and emotional repercussions”. Often referred to as domestic violence, IPV impacts both physical and emotional health for individuals, even creating stress-related responses for children and families exposed. Healthcare professionals can play a critical role in responding to this health issue through knowledge, screening efforts, and interventions that lead to appropriate supports and services. Responding to Intimate Partner Violence through Screening Intervention training offers participant tools to identify individuals at risk, health consequences that impact physical and emotional health, strategies for screening, and resources to support individuals at risk through local resources.

The Resilient Practitioner: A Clinician’s Guide to Emotional Wellbeing Alicia Davis, PCC, LMT Your emotions are powerful influences of behavior and strong emotions physiologically override the rational, thinking and reasoning mind within 3 seconds. Your thoughts create your reality either negatively or positively. Being able to cultivate self-awareness, practice self-regulation and effectively respond to potentially overpowering thoughts (worry, negativity, criticism) and feelings (such as anger, fear and grief) are critical skills to have in a clinical environment.

An Introduction to Client Affect Management Tools Don deGraffenried, LCSW This practical and hands-on workshop is designed to give clinicians a firm base of experience with affect management tools and for their clients to use in psychotherapy. Affect management tools help clients to regulate emotions, increase impulse control, experience relaxation, reduce anxiety and often help to generate positive spiritual experiences. Seeking Safety Summer Krause, LPC, CADClll This workshop will demonstrate how participants can implement Seeking Safety, an evidence-based model for trauma and substance use in a variety of settings. Seeking Safety teaches present-focused coping skills to help clients attain safety in their lives. There are 25 treatment topics, each representing a safe coping skill relevant to both trauma and/or substance abuse, such as “Asking for Help”, “Creating Meaning”, “Compassion”, and “Healing from Anger”. The Impact and Importance of Cultivating Positive Body Image in the Perinatal Period Annie Keating-Scherer, LCSW Samantha Nilsson, LCSW In this workshop, we will discuss what body image is, including how it develops and how negative body image can impact women. We will talk about what perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are, the risk factors for development, which includes negative body image and weight difficulties, and the consequences of these issues being left untreated. The Science and Art of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy David Tolin, PhD, ABPP In this workshop, participants will learn the foundations of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); discover the mechanisms and interplay of maladaptive cognition, emotion, and behavior; and understand pathological processes of the brain. CBT centers on the solutions and challenges of distorted cognitions to help change destructive behavior patterns. CBT interventions can be applied to a range of client concerns in both inpatient and outpatient settings. As professionals, participants will learn how to intervene at various levels. To help with event, emotional, and cognitiverelated concerns, participants will become familiar with strategies such as stimulus control, cognitive restructuring, emotion modulation, relaxation training, and newer approaches based on mindfulness and acceptance. Cultivating Cultural Humility: Examining Biases and Identity Mara Gottlieb, PhD, LMSW Many of our clients have survived experiences we cannot fathom and arriving at the first session with us, makes them the heroes and heroines of their own lives already. Approaching the professional relationship through a lens of cultural humility asks us to honor the resilience and wisdom our clients already possess: to strive for a deeper level of openness to their experience and the way they see the world. Cultural humility is a modern approach to cultural awareness that integrates the broadest possible definition of culture and identity intersectionality with a collaborative, 2-person model that demands our own ongoing commitment to compassionate self-awareness, encouraging us to see without judgment how our own experience and identities impact the work we do and the values we hold. A Bridge to Universal Respect & Quality Care Giving: Compassion Hansa Bhargava, MD Compassion and empathy are a necessity for all healthcare providers for numerous reasons. Structural inequalities including socioeconomic disadvantages, ACEs, racism, and bias have unfortunately contributed to health and emotional inequity, often to those who need it most. Compassion is essential to moving the needle in these areas. Many people are often in a state of stress and pain, making it difficult to listen and process what is needed to understand others’ symptoms and to make a difference. Self-compassion is essential in taking care of the ‘pain’ or emotionally distressed state, which can lead to grounding yourself in a zone of wellness. Once there is an understanding of how to better stay in this calm state, we are optimally equipped to process empathy and compassion for others, the basis of inclusion. Participants will learn about the ethics surrounding the medical model versus a HAES perspective.

HAES requires allowing for bodily autonomy of our patients/clients, empowering clients/patients to make their own choices regarding their bodies and to allow clients access to ethical care. Understanding Psychological Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care Part 2 Eileen Russo, MA, LADC This introductory and experiential training is a supplement to Understanding Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care Part 1 and will provide clinicians and case managers with an overview of coaching on grounding, emotional/ physical safety planning, and the importance of educating clients on the possible impact of traumatic experience.

Discussion will provide a closer look at diagnostic criteria, screening, assessment, treatment models, and a review of psychological first aid. This training is most appropriate for those who are beginning their understanding of psychological trauma and would like to learn some basic, effective skills for working with those whose lived experience includes trauma. Those attending Part 2 need to attend Part 1 or have equivalent knowledge from other introductory trauma training.

E x p e r t Tra i n e rs Jelan Agnew, LCSW, has been working in the field of social work for over 13 years and received her MSW from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. Working primarily with Hartford youth, her experience includes MDFT In-home therapy, work in residential and group homes, work in an alternative high school, a 28-day rehab program and almost 5 years at the Institute of Living at Hartford hospital. During her time at the Institute of Living (IOL), Jelan worked in the Extended Day Treatment Program providing group, family and individual therapy to Hartford youth of color. In addition, at the IOL, she worked in the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Intensive Outpatient Program, providing DBT groups, family and individual therapy to adults with Borderline Personality Disorder. In the last two years, she started a private practice called “Nalej of Self.” Nalej of Self provides individual, family, group and couples therapy, as well as Mindfulness/ Meditation Workshops. Jelan is an adjunct professor at Eastern Connecticut State University, teaching “Intro to Social Work” and certified Reiki Practitioner, and enjoys exploring non-traditional means of healing.

Jelan enjoys working with children, adolescents and adults. She loves the reciprocal energy of working with such amazing folks. “It doesn’t feel like work”, she is often known to say after a day working with her clients.

Dr. Hansa Bhargava is a thought leader, writer and speaker on mental health in families and healthcare workers and has spoken at International Society for Pediatric Innovation, GA Tech Innovation Day, as well as at the International Congress of Pediatrics as well as participated in talks with Former First Lady Michelle Obama and UNICEF roundtables. At WebMD, she produced the Resiliency Medscape series ‘The Doctors Dilemma of Overcoming Burnout’, is currently teaching a resiliency course at the Emory University Medical School and has authored the book ‘Building Happier Kids’ slated for publication in early 2022.

Linda Blozie is the Director of Training and Prevention for the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence. There she is responsible for the overall operation of the Coalition’s Training Institute and the implementation of Connecticut’s Plan for the Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence. She has been with the Coalition since 2001 and served in a variety of capacities including public policy advocacy, communication and fatality review. Previous to joining this staff, Linda served for fifteen years as the executive director of the Prudence Crandall Center, the domestic violence agency located in New Britain. Linda has trained nationally on such topics as domestic violence and substance abuse, domestic violence fatality review, communicating for change and the risks and benefits of technology for victims/survivors of domestic violence.

Alicia Davis, PCC, is a Professional Certified Coach, former CT Licensed Massage Therapist and partner in the coaching firm Transformative Leadership Strategies. She brings over 30 years of leadership development experience in the fields of holistic healthcare, social services and behavioral health non-profits, insurance, engineering and corporate settings.

She creates dynamic coaching and team-building experiences for leaders at all levels of an organization that address challenges such as organizational culture, team alignment, change management, communication and high stress. Donald F. deGraffenried, LCSW, maintains a private practice in New Haven, focusing on patient trauma treatment and consultation/supervision to EMDR practitioners. He specializes in the treatment of complex PTSD with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and is a passionate advocate for expanding EMDR into agency and community mental health settings. deGraffenried has extensive experience working with homicide survivors and victims of other violent crimes, using both EMD and the EMDR Recent Event Protocol.

Donna Fedus is Gerontologist & Founder of Borrow My Glasses, LLC, an education firm co-founded with producer Lauren Lewis to bring new perspectives to aging and caregiving through customized workshops, programs, videos and events. As a gerontologist educator for nearly 30 years, Donna brings her passion for dementia and caregiving issues, curriculum design and teaching, coalition building, and new program strategy. She is an adjunct professor at 2 Connecticut colleges, offers a wide array of continuing education workshops, and is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences.

Dr. Mara Gottlieb is the President of Talking Changes, an anti-oppression and biasawareness consulting firm. For over twenty years, she has run workshops across the country, including serving as a keynote speaker and presenting at NASW conferences. Her programs address subjects ranging from cultural humility to anti-racism advocacy, LGBTQ awareness, teen suicide prevention, and vicarious trauma. Dr. Gottlieb has served as an adjunct professor at the NYU Silver School of Social Work, Smith College School for Social Work, and Southern Connecticut State University. She holds a BA from Brown University, and earned her MSW and Ph.D. in Social Work from NYU.

Annie Keating-Scherer, LCSW, has been in practice for over a decade treating adults and adolescents in private practice, clinic, partial hospitalization and college settings.

She is the current owner of Sage Psychotherapy and Sage Therapy and Wellness. Annie specializes in treating eating disorders, disordered eating and difficult relationships with food and body image, as well as perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Annie particularly loves helping perinatal individuals find peace and even joy within their bodies. Annie believes wholeheartedly in Health at Every Size, Body Positivity and embracing our unique inner and outer beauty. Annie is a former lead clinician at a partial hospitalization program for eating disorders and a former eating disorder coordinator at the university level. Annie is certified in DBT, Mindfulness-based CBT and Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. Annie is a graduate of NYU’s Silver School of Social work and Tisch School of the Arts and is a former professional actor. Most importantly, Annie is the mother to two awesome girls.

Summer Krause, LPC, CADCIII, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor III, with a clinical practice in Oregon that includes adolescent and adult Seeking Safety, in both individual and group modality. She has worked with Treatment Innovations since 2011. She counsels children, adolescents and adults and has spent the majority of her career working with adolescents. Her specialties are grief, trauma and addiction. After volunteering in juvenile detention centers for many years, starting in 1996, Summer went to graduate school to help address some of the underlying issues that contribute to youth entering the juvenile justice system. She completed her master’s degree in counseling with a focus on children and adolescents and has specialized training in trauma-informed care. She has worked in nonprofit, group home, juvenile justice, residential and outpatient settings.

After being trained by Lisa Najavits in Seeking Safety, Summer implemented Seeking Safety groups for adolescent boys and girls in a residential treatment program. She is based in Portland, Oregon.

Amy Lane worked as a public school teacher and co-owned a preschool prior to joining the team at the Connecticut Women’s Consortium. Now, she manages new CEC applications, certifications, and communicates with trainers to ensure they receive the aid they need. Amy holds a BS from University of Rhode Island, an Elementary and Middle school Certification from Roger Williams University, and 200YTT from Connecticut Yoga Center. On the weekends, Amy loves to share her passion for yoga and mindfulness.

Samantha Nilsson, LCSW, has a private practice, specializing in perinatal mood disorders and body image. She is a mom of 2 wonderful children. Samantha attended Eastern CT State and Southern CT State for schooling and began her career focusing on substance abuse and addiction with adolescents, adults and families with young children, in a variety of settings. Samantha has been specializing in perinatal mood disorders and body image for the last few years and is trained in Perinatal Mood Disorders through PSI. Her hope is to help contribute to the changes needed to adequately support women through the perinatal period. Providing more education, support and guidance so that moms feel confident and empowered to be the kind of moms they want to be.

Maria Elena Oliva, LCSW, earned her master’s degree at Fordham University at Lincoln Center with a special interest in treatment of children and their families. She worked in Child Guidance Centers in New York and Connecticut, confronting the many challenges experienced by a growing monolingual and bilingual population to receive linguistically competent psychotherapy. Currently Ms. Oliva is the Director of Social Work at the Connecticut Mental Health Center in New Haven, CT (DMHAS). Ms. Oliva is a doctoral candidate at the Smith College School of Social Work where she is exploring the impact of bilingualism on supervision and clinical training of the bilingual social worker. As a child immigrant to the United States from Cuba, Ms. Oliva has lived and been educated within the duet of two languages. She believes that it is these voices that always remind her of home, that speak to her in the language of the heart.

M Reim Ifrach, is currently the Director of Eating Disorder Treatment, Expressive Art, and Education at Lotus Counseling of Connecticut, the current President of the Connecticut chapter for the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and an adjunct professor at Albertus Magnus College. They treat clients diagnosed with eating disorders, disordered eating and body image issues, complex trauma and those in the LGBTQIA+ Community. Their current work revolves around addressing body image issues and the treatment of bodies utilizing a social justice framework and examining the intersectionality of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, ability/disability statues and privilege.

M enjoys research, hosting trainings and supervising therapist looking to learn how the marginalization and oppression of bodies creates eating disorders and societal trauma.

When M is not working they are raising many rescue animals, creating political art in the community, and learning about self-sustainable practices that support ecological growth.

Eileen M. Russo, MA, is a licensed addiction counselor, a certified clinical supervisor, and a certified co-occurring disorders professional who has worked in the addiction and mental health field for the past 34 years. Ms. Russo is a Professor and Program Coordinator for the Drug and Alcohol Recovery Counselor program with Gateway Community College. In addition to teaching and training, she specializes in treating co-occurring PTSD in mental health and substance abuse populations and has assisted agencies with developing trauma-informed mental health/substance abuse treatment programs for men, women, and children across Connecticut. Ms. Russo has co-authored articles on the integration of trauma-specific services into substance abuse treatment and is a co-author of the curriculum Healing Trauma: A Brief Intervention for Women, Second Edition, by Stephanie Covington. She was the principal consultant (2007-2016) for the implementation of Healing Trauma, Beyond Violence, and Helping Women Recover in York Correctional Institute.

Don Scherling, PsyD, is a Senior Clinical Consultant, Health Educator, Behavioral Health Wellness Coach, assistant in the Care for Caregivers Yoga program, & a Clinical Faculty member in the Berkshire Medical Center - Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences in Pittsfield, MA. He is a QPR and SPRC certified trainer and a Senior Clinical Consultant and Trainer with SAMHSA/CSAT, the CT Dept. of Mental Health & Addiction Services, and other regional and statewide agencies in the Northeast.

Ashley Starr Frechette, MPH, is the Director of Health Professional Outreach at Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence. She oversees the Health Professional Outreach Advocacy program for CCADV’s member organizations, and provides IPV screening and intervention trainings for health professionals across the state. Ashley is a member of the Governor’s Council on Women and Girls- Health and Safety Committee.

Dr. David Tolin is the Founder and Director of the Anxiety Disorders Center at the Institute of Living, and an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine. He is the President of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, the Past-President of the Clinical Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association, and a principal investigator for the National Institutes of Health. He received the Award for Lifetime Contribution to Psychology from the Connecticut Psychological Association. Dr. Tolin is the author of over 200 scientific journal articles, as well as the books Doing CBT: A Comprehensive Guide to Working with Behaviors, Thoughts, and Emotions and Buried in Treasures: Help for Compulsive Acquiring, Saving, and Hoarding. Dr. Tolen has been featured on the reality TV series Hoarders and The OCD Project and has been a recurrent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Dr. Oz Show.

Seth Wallace, LCSW, is the Assistant Director of the Yale Office of LGBTQ Resources and a clinician at Yale Mental Health and Counseling. He completed his MSW at Southern Connecticut State University in 2017. For over 15 years, Seth has worked to improve behavioral and physical health outcomes for the LGBTQ community. He lives in New Haven with his husband Kevin, with whom he co-owns and operates a Filipino BBQ project.

How do I get My Certificate or Credits?

Within 3 business days after the training (this may be longer for offsite events and conferences), you will receive an email with instructions to access the online survey and certificate. If you have trouble accessing these items, please email training@womensconsortium.org or call us at (203)909-6888 x2.

Forget to Sign In or Out? Arriving Late or Leaving Early? You Will Not Get Credits Sign-in begins 30 minutes before each event. You are required to sign in and out, before and after the training to receive credit. In accordance with accreditation standards, continuing education hours are only given to those individuals who have completed the entire workshop. Partial credit is not given. If you arrive 30 minutes after the start of the event or leave during the event for any reason you will not receive credits.

EMERGENCIES & CANCELLATIONS If You Cannot Attend a Workshop As of January 1st, 2020, The Connecticut Women’s Consortium will no longer offer credit on account for training cancellations. You must cancel your registration a minimum of 2 business days before the training start date in order to receive a refund minus a 25% administration fee. Alternatively, you may transfer into another course of your choosing until 9am on the training day.

What Happens During Inclement Weather or if a Workshop is Cancelled In the event of inclement weather, call (203) 909-6888 x1 the morning of your workshop. This is a recorded voice message that is updated with a weather delay or cancellation. We also post a message at www.womensconsortium.org. The CWC reserves the right to cancel a program at any time. This may include weather, venue/staff emergencies or low attendance. In the event of a cancellation, we will contact you by email with a rescheduled date, or offer a credit or refund.

AVAILABLE CERTIFICATES & CREDITS Certificates of Attendance are available to all attendees who have signed in/out.

Social Workers, Therapists, Counselors, and Psychologists National Association of Social Workers Connecticut Chapter (CECs) are accepted in the states of MA, RI, VT, and NJ. Check with your state board to see if they offer reciprocity. These credits are applicable to Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Marriage & Family Therapists (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC), and Licensed Clinical Psychologists.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors Connecticut Certification Board CECs are applicable to Licensed Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors (LADC) & Certified Addiction Counselors (CAC).The Association of Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) & National International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) are covered under CCB-CT Credits.
