Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Assault: How to Practically and Emotionally Support Clients Who Have Experienced Sexual Violence

Anna Sydner-Osman, LCSW

Every 68 seconds, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. Given the alarmingly high incidence of sexual violence across the country, clinicians in all practice settings ought to be prepared to support survivors. This workshop will include both an overview of local postassault resources (medical, reporting, support, and practical options) as well as common themes in providing counseling/therapy to individuals who have experienced sexual trauma. Societal myths about sexual assault will be addressed and replaced by a trauma-informed understanding of the dynamics of sexual violence and the wide range of responses folks may have after such experiences. Participants will engage with case studies/vignettes to practice applying the workshop material.

This program offers an overview of borderline personality disorder (BPD), chronic emotion dysregulation, the theory behind DBT, how to start, and how to use skills in sessions. Time will be spent practicing, learning, and integrating DBT skills, such as core mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Cultural Humility: Approaching Our Differences with Curiosity and Respect

Mara

Every one of us was raised in various social contexts that informed us about our own identity and the identities of others, including our skin color, gender and sexual identities, body size, and more. Approaching cultural diversity and awareness with an effort toward humility, rather than “competence,” allows for greater respect, curiosity and collaboration. This workshop provides participants with opportunities to reflect on how our cultural identities – and what we were taught about them, both subtly and overtly – impacts our unconscious and implicit biases. Having the courage to explore our own cultural landscape and excavate the biases we learned helps ensure that our communication and behavior are consistent with our values, and demonstrate respect for all with whom we interact.

The Resilient Practitioner: A Clinician’s Guide to Emotional Wellbeing

Your emotions are powerful influences of behavior and strong emotions physiologically override the rational, thinking and reasoning mind within 3 seconds. Your thoughts create your reality either negatively or positively. Being able to cultivate self-awareness, practice selfregulation and effectively respond to potentially overpowering thoughts (worry, negativity, criticism) and feelings (such as anger, fear and grief) are critical skills to have in a clinical environment. This workshop combines Core Energy™ Coaching techniques, mindfulness and learned optimism practices, and brain science to provide practical and effective ways of calming down, addressing core issues, maintaining an internal sense of calm and contributing to a peaceful environment in which to work and live.

Seeking Safety

This workshop will demonstrate how participants can implement Seeking Safety, an evidencebased model for trauma and substance use in a variety of settings. Seeking Safety teaches present-focused coping skills to help clients attain safety in their lives. There are 25 treatment topics, each representing a safe coping skill relevant to both trauma and/or substance abuse, such as “Asking for Help”, “Creating Meaning”, “Compassion”, and “Healing from Anger”. Seeking Safety strives to increase hope through emphasis on ideals; it offers exercises, emotionally evocative language, and quotations to engage patients; and provides concrete strategies to build recovery skills. In this training we cover background on trauma and substance abuse, and overview of Seeking Safety including its evidence-base, and clinical implementation. Assessment and treatment resources are also provided.

It has wide application for use with clients, especially in the management of stress and anxiety. Participants will practice the “One Stone Meditation” and develop the meditative experience. Finally, participants will have the option to enhance/strengthen their experience using bilateral tapping which comes out of the work of Francine Shapiro, PhD, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Understanding Psychological Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care Part 1

For mental health and substance use clients, a history of traumatic experience is common, yet, the impact of trauma can be difficult for service providers to recognize. This introductory workshop assumes attendees have little knowledge of trauma and PTSD. This workshop will provide an understanding of psychological trauma and define trauma-informed, traumaresponsive and trauma specific care. There will be a focus on types of trauma, including socio-cultural trauma.

The Science and Art of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

In this workshop, participants will learn the foundations of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); discover the mechanisms and interplay of maladaptive cognition, emotion, and behavior; and understand pathological processes of the brain. CBT centers on the solutions and challenges of distorted cognitions to help change destructive behavior patterns. CBT interventions can be applied to a range of client concerns in both inpatient and outpatient settings. As professionals, participants will learn how to intervene at various levels. To help with event, emotional, and cognitive-related concerns, participants will become familiar with strategies such as stimulus control, cognitive restructuring, emotion modulation, relaxation training, and newer approaches based on mindfulness and acceptance. All will learn about operant therapy (e.g., reinforcement strategies), exposure, activity scheduling, and skill building and how the flexibility of these approaches allows them to be used with other interventions.

Even a Cactus Needs Water! Wellbeing Practices for Professional Caregivers

The emotional strain of working in the helping professions can cause burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma impacting staff turnover, effectiveness and affecting professional/personal lives. Without effective coping mechanisms care-givers can become frustrated, overwhelmed and immobilized. This experiential workshop is a three-layered approach to staff care; organizational, professional and personal. In addition to receiving information on topics such as vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, participants will engage in exercises related to reconnection, spirituality and mindfulness practice.

Assessment of Acute Risk

Don Scherling, PsyD

Based on their therapeutic relationship, front-line and primary care clinicians, mental health clinicians, addictions counselors, nurses, case managers, and other helpers are often in the best position to obtain the most comprehensive information about suicidal ideation, substance use, and other self-harming behaviors. Suicide assessment training often focuses on statistics; this course is different. You will learn proven, research-based interviewing skills to maximize your ability and confidence. You will gain the ability to obtain essential information to screen, assess, refer, and manage acute risk in patients with mental illness, substance use, and other co-occurring disorders.
