What’s Big Bike Revival all about? Our Vison:
Helping unlock the joy of cycling
Our Mission: ‘Incentivising people to get back into cycling or begin with a
programme of free events that fix bikes, teach skills and lead rides’
The Big Bike Revival (BBR) is a behaviour change programme that aims to incentivise and inspire the large proportion of people who own bikes in England, but do not cycle, to start cycling. The intervention aims to unlock the potential for people to cycle again or for the first time, through a programme of events offered within a fixed period and all with a common focus. People are encouraged to participate in fun, social and inclusive events that present cycling as a practical, normalised and everyday activity. The BBR programme of events is delivered in partnership with a network of small, volunteerled organisations, which are rooted in local communities and working to tackle a range of local needs and challenges. The lived experience and expertise of community led groups enables BBR to successfully reach the target audience of people on low incomes, people from minority ethnic backgrounds, those not in work and those not meeting physical activity guidelines. Events and activities are free at the point of access and aim to engage the public and present opportunities for people to get their bike checked and fixed, learn about bike maintenance, brush up on cycle skills, and go on low mileage bikes rides to increase the confidence required to keep people on their bikes. Events are driven by the model that focuses on three elements:
Fixing bikes
–
Teaching skills -
Leading rides
Funded by the Department of Transport (DfT), Cycling UK is working to address a clear set of objectives and delivering BBR with an aim to:
• encourage people to cycle regularly • increase short cycling trips • improve the perception of cycle safety
