Boca Raton, FL – Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI) will host a public concert featuring the “Prince and Princess” of Jewish contemporary music, Neshama Carlebach and Josh Nelson. The concert will be held on Saturday, March 12 and will serve as the artists’ only South Florida public show this year.

Tickets to the event range from $36 for general admission to $65, $100 $150 for reserved sanctuary seating and can be purchased at Congregation B’nai Israel.

The doors open at 7 p.m. and will start with a cocktail party with light bites and a pre-show featuring musical performances by several CBI musical groups and talents, followed by the concert starting at 8 p.m.

“We are very honored and so excited to be able to welcome these top two Jewish musical giants in concert at our synagogue,” said Steve Allen, executive director of Congregation B’nai Israel. “Josh Nelson and Neshama Carlebach are superstars in their own rights, and about a year ago combined their talents musically to form the most explosive, meaningful and rocking show for all audiences. Combining Josh’s rock talents and inspirational writings inspired by his late mentor, Debbie Friedman, and Neshama’s strong allegiance to her late father and icon, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, this is a concert that absolutely cannot be missed.”

Neshama Carlebach, a leading superstar in Jewish entertainment, is continuing the legacy established by her father, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. Like her father, Neshama’s talent and charisma captivate and endear her to people of all ages,

faiths and backgrounds. Neshama has performed and taught in cities worldwide, has sung on the Broadway stage, has sold more than one million records, and was a six-time entrant in the 2011 Grammy Awards. Neshama was one of the creators of the Broadway play “Soul Doctor.” Her ninth recording, “Soul Daughter,” features performances by the original Broadway cast of the musical.

The Symphonia’s March Connoisseur Concert Musical Weekend To Feature World Famous Pianist Who Is Also A Cartoonist Boca Raton, FL – The Symphonia Boca Raton’s March concert will feature world renowned piano soloist, Misha Dichter, who is also a published cartoonist; an interesting combination for a musician. The Symphonia guest conductor will be Gerard Schwarz, who has won 4 EMMY Awards, 6 ASCAP Awards and has had 14 GRAMMY nominations.

Misha Dichter won a Silver Medal at the prestigious 1966 Tchaikovsky Competition. In addition to being a brilliant pianist, Dichter is also a cartoonist and sketch artist and has published the book, A Pianist’s World in Drawings. He is also a resident artist and faculty member at the Aspen Music Festival, along with his wife, Cipa, for the past twenty-five years.

The schedule for the musical weekend includes: Friday, March 18th - Box Lunch it with The Symphonia - Conductor Gerard Schwarz, will speak about the weekend’s concert. Piano soloist, Misha Dichter, will provide insights to ’A Tribute to the Master’s Program, which will be performed on Sunday, February 7. The Box Lunch It event costs $35 per person. on’t call Boca Black Box Center for the Arts a comedy club because it is so much more. Yes, back a bunch of years ago at their current location in Piccadilly Square Shopping Center (which houses International Jewelers Exchange and Jimmy the Greek) it was known as both Bocanuts and the New York Comedy Club, but that’s where the similarity ended. It’s now set up as a theater with rows of glistening new seating, a brand new bar and a list of talent that reads like the Las Vegas Strip. Bunions

B

unions are more technically known as hallux abductovalgus.

People usually think of a bunion as a “bump” on the inside of their foot. However, the development of a bunion is much more complicated than this. A common misconception is that ill-fitted shoes and high heels cause bunions. However, the general consensus is that genetics and biomechanical factors (ex. excessive pronation) contribute to bunion formation.

With a bunion, the bone on the inside of your foot (1st metatarsal), begins to splay outward. This in turn causes the big toe to move in the opposite direction. Because of this movement, the joint become maligned. Because the joint is not in its proper position, over time, arthritis can develop in the joint. Bunions are progressive and as the deformity becomes severe, the bump becomes more noticeable and the big toe can cross over the 2nd toe. Sometimes the bump itself becomes painful when it rubs against shoes.

A bursa (fluid filled sac) can form over the bump and can become inflamed (bursitis).

Bunions are diagnosed clinically and with x-rays. Your foot & ankle specialist will be able to determine the severity of your bunion and which procedure is best should you require surgery.

Bunions are treated both conservatively and surgically. The severity of the patient’s symptoms will determine the treatment. Surgery is not recommended unless the bunion interferes with the patient’s daily activities. Conservative treatment options include accommodating the deformity. This is accomplished by wearing shoes with a wider toe box, padding, custom made orthotics, cortisone injections, and antiinflammatory medications.

The only way to “get rid” of the bunion is through surgery. There are many different surgical procedures for a bunion and these will depend on your x-rays. One of the most common procedures is an Austin bunionectomy. This is when the bump is shaved down. Then a “V” cut is made on the side of the bone. The bone is then shifted over and secured with 1 or 2 screws. This is an outpatient procedure that takes approximately 30-45 minutes. You can walk on your foot the same day of surgery (on your heel) in a surgical shoe

wo weeks ago, the nation rejoiced as news broke that four Americans held by Iran would finally be returned to their families. Yet Robert Levinson of Coral Springs, who went missing from Iran’s Kish Island in March 2007, was not part of the deal.

Bob Levinson had traveled to Iran to meet with contacts for a case he had been working. As has widely been reported in the news media, Bob was a 28-year veteran of the FBI and DEA who had been on contract with the CIA. In 2010, the Levinsons received a video of Bob in which he asks the United States government to help him. In 2011, the family received pictures of Bob dressed in an orange jumpsuit.

adie is a 5-year-old male Bichon. There is no toy in the world, big or small, she doesn’t love and play with. She adores my wife who feeds her and takes her on very long walks every morning. She loves me too, but not as much as my wife even though I’m the one, secretly, giving her snacks at the dinner table. She loves riding in the car and sits like queen on the console looking around while observing the traffic. Taking her to the park is a sight to be seen; she runs as fast as could be, and when she does her ears turn up and looks like an airplane about to take off. Our one true love, SADIE

utchie is fifteen years old. She is a beautiful and colorful Meyers Parrot.

Butchie is always making sweet kissing sounds and has a great personality.

She is very friendly and sociable. Her favorite toy has many little bells on it, and she likes the soft sounds that they make.

Facts about Fostering

T

he pet overpopulation problem is real. Most people see this, but many don’t realize how they can help. Fortunately, there are many ways one can get involved. Simply spaying or neutering an animal is one way to make a difference. Another way is to adopt from a Humane Society, other shelter, or a local rescue group. Sadly, the Humane Society of the United States reports, “only about 30 percent of pets in homes come from shelters or rescues.” For those that want to do even more, there is fostering.

Fostering comes in many forms. The term, “foster care,” when applied to animals, refers to care for orphaned, stray, ill, or otherwise un-homed animals. Foster care implies care for a term, not forever, which would be termed an adoption. Fostering could be caring for a litter of kittens until they are weaned, treating an injured animal until healed, or caring for a terminally ill dog until his quality of life is no longer good. Fostering for a shelter or rescue group often simply means to provide housing for and care for an animal under that group’s control until that animal is ready to move on to the next step, which ultimately would be a forever home.

Fostering a pet from a rescue of shelter has many positive effects. Fostering allows dogs and cats to be socialized in homes, reduces stress, decreases the incidence of illness and spread of disease, and even allows ill or injured animals to recover more quickly and get personal attention they might need. A dog or cat that is fostered is more likely to be placed in an appropriate home as the foster parent will know more about that animal and will be able to help ensure a good match.

A good foster is hard to find. There are many challenges that foster caregivers face.

At the top is emotional attachment. Some people don’t foster sick or older animals because they would be too sad if the animal died. For others, the attachment to the particular animal becomes so strong that one wants to adopt the fostered animal. A good foster parent wouldn’t be tempted to adopt their foster pet unless there’s a very good reason because often doing so limits one’s ability to foster other animals.

If you are interested in becoming a foster, the first step is to educate yourself more on the rewards and realities of fostering. There are many resources available online that tackle the subject more in depth than the scope of this article is able.

The second step is to connect with a local shelter or local rescue group. There are numerous rescue groups that are in South Florida: Adopt-A-Bull Rescue, Coastal Boxer Rescue, Pets In Distress, and A Better Life Rescue are rescue groups that I’m aware of to name a few. Uninsured Motorist Coverage Ken: Andrew and I are personal injury attorneys in Deerfield Beach. Last week we received a phone call from the wife of one of Andrew’s business acquaintances, Dave.

Andrew: That’s right she called me to say that Dave was involved in a terrible automobile accident and she needed to know what to do about the mounting medical bills.

Ken: Many people don’t know that the first layer of medical protection from an insurance standpoint in Florida is your automobile insurance not your health insurance.

Andrew: Yes, but that coverage, called PIP, only pays typically for the first $10,000 and usually only 80% of each medical bill. The hurt person is responsible for the other 20% unless they carry other coverage.

Ken: More importantly, if someone seriously injures you with their vehicle, it is critical that you consider having uninsured/underinsured coverage. We call it UM coverage.

Andrew: When someone hurts you in a crash, their own insurance, called Bodily injury coverage, is considered first. It’s the layer of insurance protection that covers a driver if they are at fault for a crash. The problem is, many people don’t carry this coverage or don’t carry enough coverage for serious injuries.
