LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

W

ow, 2018 is almost here. This year flew by real quick. As you can see from our past year of magazines, we have spared no effort in bringing you the most enjoyable and reader friendly magazines we can come up with. We have taken all your input and ideas and have published what we feel are the 3 best local community magazines in South florida. We all were hur t by Hurricane Irma but thank fully, our area was spared the brunt of any major damage. Our thoughts and prayer s are with ever yone who was impacted by any of the severe weather to hit our nation over the past month. Global warming anyone?

The biggest improvement we made this month was to increase our carrier routes to 40,0 0 0+ dif ferent homes over 2 months in each area of our Boca Raton and Coral Springs/Parkland maga zines. We hope this brings many more reader s into our family and helps all our adver tiser s equally so. Please suppor t our adver tiser s. Remember to also send us your photos of your costumed pets as our 2017 Pet Costume Contest Is over November 15. Thank you for your suppor t.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

Enjoy The Magazine

FINANCIAL / TAX ADVICE RobeRt Spielman, Cpa, JD

Year End Planning 2017/2018

N

ovember and December are the months tax professionals urge their clients to project their current year tax picture, while at the same time considering what the next year might look like. These later months in the year are a time when most taxpayers have a pretty good idea what their full year tax picture will look like. At the same time, this gives us weeks to plan for the current year and consider how current year planning can af fect the next year. When we consider 2017 and 2018 together, we can implement strategies resulting in the overall best posture. While 2017 saw many Tax Cour t cases impacting specific circumstances, other than hurricane relief, there has been no significant tax legislation, that at present, af fects our year end planning. The current proposals in Congress will af fect all of us dif ferently, but at this time, we do not know what provisions will be enacted and whether they will be retroactive to the beginning of 2017. All of these uncer tainties put us in a dif ficult position to accurately plan for the end of this year and into 2018. Nonetheless, planning is still essential. As always, individuals should accumulate all their income and deduction data to date and project the totals through year end. Do a quick calculation as to what your taxes might be with your projected taxable income, then consider additional action steps that might improve your net result. Below are some planning ideas for the end of 2017. Additional strategies not mentioned, may be applicable in your circumstances. That is why it is essential to meet with your accountant in the next few weeks to explore strategies uniquely applicable to your circumstances. 1. Review your ability to shift income to family members in lower tax brackets. This can be accomplished in small businesses to reduce income of senior family members. 2. Make sure you have utilized the annual gift tax exemption of $14,000 per person. In 2018, $14,000 is increased to $15,000. If you do make gifts, making them early in the year creates an oppor tunity for the recipients to earn income, which eventually might be subject to a lower income tax. 3.Review all your business activities and Schedule C sole proprietorships. Accelerate deductions and postpone income where possible. 4.If you have capital gains income, consider taking losses on securities in your por tfolio. Be careful of the wash sale rules, which disallows losses for securities repurchased within thir ty (30) days. 5.Carefully review your itemized deductions and how they are impacted by phase outs. If you can bunch up your deductions in 2017 to gain a benefit, consider doing so. If you cannot do so, consider pushing of f deductions to 2018 when you might be able to exceed applicable phase out limitations. 6.Sometimes it makes sense to accelerate income into the current year to bring you up to a higher tax bracket than you might be in, but that will save taxes over the two year period. Accelerating income can be accomplished through security sales, postponement of deductions, taking additional IR A withdrawals, and of course through timing of payments for taxes, charity and other miscellaneous deductions. The objective here is to consider 2017 and 2018 together to determine what strategy results in the lowest combined tax liability.

10

NOVEMBER 2017

7.Consider fully funding your retirement accounts if you need additional deductions. If you do not need deductions or actually need income, consider additional retirement account withdrawals. Remember, if you reached age 70 ½ this year, you may delay your first withdrawal until next year, so long as it is made before April 1. If you are in this circumstance, it is impor tant to determine in which year taking your first required minimum distribution results in the best tax situation. 8.Consider “Rothifying” your IR A accounts, if you need to accelerate income into 2017. Many taxpayers end up with little or no taxable income in years before they are required to take minimum distributions. Oftentimes when those distributions are required, their income increases markedly. The objective here is to smooth out your income and take advantage of a lower tax liability by minimizing ef fective tax rates applicable to the withdrawals. 9. As always, make sure your Federal and State tax payments are suf ficient to avoid underpayment penalties. Notwithstanding, sometimes an underpayment penalty is acceptable if making the payment in a succeeding year generates a tax benefit that may not have been generated in an earlier year. You must run the numbers to see if this strategy works for you. 10.Review any credits that might be applicable. This includes business credits, education credits, energy credits, and state tax credits, among others. Year-end tax planning can be complex and is often based on assumptions and speculation. This is magnified by tax legislation uncer tainty. Notwithstanding, we need to do what we can based upon the facts as they presently exist. For most of us, tax rates might not be decreasing significantly in 2018, so the action steps addressed above most likely apply. If however, you and your advisor believe your 2018 tax bracket may be significantly less than the bracket in 2017, many of the strategies addressed above should be implemented in reverse. That means accelerating deductions from 2018 to 2017 where they will be more valuable, and postponing income into 2018 where the tax rate might be lower. While your tax return can be viewed as a historical document, your tax planning is for here and now. Plan your actions steps for the remainder of 2017 into 2018. As tax changes come into clearer view, you can alter your strategies to take advantage of any benefits that might accrue. But if you don’t plan, your tax savings oppor tunities will surely pass you by. My best advice, pull all your information together, plan now in November, plan again in December, and you will cer tainly have done the best you can. Best of luck this tax planning season and best wishes for a happy holiday season and wonder ful New Year.

Incognito Salon The Landmark

I

ncognito Salon is a true landmark in Coral Springs. The Salon has been in its original location for 27 years. Located at 1750 University Drive, next to Big Bear Brewery. Incognito Salon has had the same owners, Mario and Lou, since the doors of this boutique salon opened. It is one of the only salons left with the original owners. Incognito Salon has been a head of its time since the beginning. The space where it resides was chosen because of its three walls of glass and its New York loft appearance. The natural light that flows through out, is an important element when doing color. Many salons are designed with only windows in the front, creating shadows that make it difficult to get the perfect end result. Since Incognito is know as a hair color salon. This became one of the most important elements. In addition to the space, Incognito has given much of its attention to advanced education. The Staff continually expands their education by in house classes as well as attending the L’Oreal institute in New York. The classes consist of product knowledge and updated trends and techniques. IncognIto’s neWest trends oF 2017-2018 consIst oF: tiger eye Balayage:

reverse ombre:

Aubergine:

If these do not sound appealing. Let the color experts at Incognito help pick out a hue that is a perfect reflection of you! The artists will give you an in depth consultation, learn about your likes and dislikes and also your hair goals. They will also take into consideration your lifestyle, skin complexion, hair condition and other components to come up with a bespoke hair color. ( A hair color that is tailored just for you!).

Incognito gives each client 3 commitments: 1.Tend to the Client’s needs. 2.Treat each Client as if they are the only one. 3. Give them the best hair color of their life.

The Staff at Incognito is unique. Most have been with the salon since the beginning. Although in the many years some have moved away, they still travel to work every other week to tend to their loyal clientele. In Addition to the staff traveling from as far as Orlando, Incognito has clients that travel to get their hair colored as well. Many come from as far away as; Arizona, Texas and New York. It is a true testament of their talent.

NOVEMBER 2017

It seems with these ideas at hand, it is no wonder why Incognito Salon as survived all these years and has remained on top. Incognito’s awards range from being named Local 10 News’ “Best Salon” for 3 years in a row and New Times “#1 Readers Choice” for several years. In addition they have been Coral Springs City News “Best Color Salon” and “Hair Salon” 6 years in a row, beating every other salon in the area. L’Oreal Professional has made Incognito one of the only Platinum Elite salons in Florida. With this position, Incognito gets to preview all of the newest products, techniques and trends from Paris before anyone else. None of this has slowed them down. They continue to excel in every way to make your visit the best it can be. Visit Incognito at their boutique salon and experience it for your self.

ven as 2017 begins, Rosemary Krieger of boca Raton is still in shock, she admits, from an event that took place in late 2016.

Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. (Photo by Dale King)

when a shaky, stunned and teary-eyed Rosemary reached the podium, she thanked the nearly 1,000 people in the audience at the 29thAnnual woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon & Fashion show at the boca Raton Resort & club. she had particularly kind words for her husband, ben, longtime partner in giving, and her three children who flew in from around the country: sons Kenneth, from New York and gregory, from Delaware, and daughter, catherine Krieger-Nelson, from Dallas. “I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.” many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few. Education and Arts Leadership

Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

the generous lady from boca has a simple philosophy about giving. “You don’t think about it, you just do it. I has to come from the heart.” coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. They finally escaped in 2013 when Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison. He committed suicide behind bars.

FAMILY MATTERS Dear Debbie and Karen,

My husband and I are in the process of a divorce after 22 years of marriage. I recently learned that he had been having an affair with a woman from High school who he connected with on FB. He has been traveling back and forth for business since we moved to Parkland several years ago, but to be honest, I never suspected a thing. We have two teenage children, and he’s been a wonderful father, and a good husband (or so I thought), until I learned about this other woman. When I confronted my husband, he did not deny the affair, but said that he did not love her; he loved me and wanted to “make it right”. I did not want to even discuss it, I felt hurt and angry, and immediately went to an attorney and filed for divorce. Now I’m having second thoughts; I don’t want to seem weak or needy, yet now that I am calming down I am seeing this a little differently and maybe even recognize our marriage has gotten stale. My husband moved out (at my request), and has told me that he ended the affair and will do anything to have me back, my kids are hoping I will give him another chance, and I think I might actually still love him. Please help; I really don’t know what to do.

Dear B.G.,

- B.G, Parkland

It is not unusual to have second thoughts about something as serious as ending a long term marriage. It sounds like you reacted to the shock and pain after learning about the “other woman” and filed for divorce immediately. Perhaps your present confusion is a message that you need to slow down, make sure that you are acting for the right reasons, and not just reacting to your initial feelings of hurt and anger. We see many couples in our practice that are working towards reconciliation after there has been infidelity in the marriage. It sounds like you are able to think through the entire situation which is good! Although not all are able to get past this difficult time, those that do often find that their relationships are stronger. Now that you are re-considering your decision to divorce, and your husband wants to work things out, we would strongly urge you to schedule an appointment with a marriage and family therapist. Certainly at any point you can choose to proceed with your divorce, or you might decide that it makes sense to put it “on hold” for awhile and continue therapy until you feel sure about what you want. In either case, we suggest that you slow down the process right now, give yourself time to sort through your feelings, and not rush into anything until you feel more confident that whatever decision you make is the right one for you and your family. Family Therapy Associates, “a center for positive change”, located in the Coral Springs/ Parkland area, is co-directed by Karen Kaplan, MS. Ed., and Dr. Debbie Swayman, both licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT)’s. The practice focuses on relationship issues involving couples, families as well as life transition issues.

FAMILY FEATURES

Managing High Blood Pressure During the Holidays (Family Features) Managing blood pressure can be difficult, especially during the holidays and winter months. A change in routine, family visits, traveling, illness, holiday menus and financial concerns can all conspire to derail your best efforts at keeping chronic conditions, like high blood pressure, under control. If you are one of the millions of American adults with high blood pressure, it is vital to keep your blood pressure stable. Drastic changes can put you at risk for heart attack or stroke. Here are three ways to control your blood pressure throughout the holiday season from the American Heart Association:

heart attack or other cardiac event,” said Jorge Plutzky, M.D., director of Preventive Cardiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a volunteer with the American Heart Association. It is vital to keep track of your medication and take it as prescribed by your doctor to decrease chances of heart attack and stroke. The American Heart Association’s Check Change Control Tracker is one way to monitor your health, as it allows you to set up text message reminders, text in blood pressure readings, connect with volunteers or providers, and receive messages from volunteers or providers.

Be Wary of Decongestants Maintain Healthy Eating Habits Decongestants are in many over-thecounter cold and flu medications but they have some harmful side effects. They can raise blood pressure and decrease the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications. It’s best to use them for the shortest duration possible and avoid in severe or uncontrolled hypertension. Consider alternative therapies, such as nasal saline, intranasal corticosteroids or antihistamines, as appropriate. Keep Track of Medication The winter months tend to bring an increase in both heart attacks and strokes. According to research from the Journal of the American Heart Association, a 4.2 percent increase in heart-related deaths occurs away from a hospital from Dec. 25-Jan. 7. “Factors like cold weather, sudden increase in activity like shoveling snow, stress and dietary indiscretion can contribute to a chain of events leading to more stress on the heart during the winter months, potentially triggering a www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

The holidays can be a bad influence on healthy eating habits. However, it is important to stay active during these times and continue eating healthy. While you are enjoying holiday feasts with family, be aware of sodium, often found in seasonal foods like bread, cheeses and prepared meats, which can increase blood pressure. Don’t feel like you can’t indulge a little, but make sure to incorporate healthy meals. Staying active while traveling can be a challenge, as well. FAMILY FEATURES

5 Ways to Perfect a Carefree Style (Family Features) A carefree summery style may appear effortless, but creating a look that stands up to a busy, fun-filled day still requires some simple work. Keep your skin in top condition and your hair and makeup on point with these tips from the beauty experts at Macy’s to help you look and feel your best. Protect your skin. If there’s only one skin care product you use, it has to be sunscreen. Not only is daily SPF important for avoiding sunburns, it also helps prevent wrinkles and spots caused by sun damage. Apply early and often, and don’t be fooled by a cloudy day. Even when skies are overcast, those UV rays can inflict plenty of harm. If you’ll be out for an extended period, consider a stylish hat to lend extra protection to your scalp, ears and face. Also remember to cover or apply sunscreen to often-overlooked places, such as the tops of your feet. Get that glow. While you’re using sunscreen to prevent damage, adding a bronzer to your daily routine can help give you that sun-kissed glow. Preventing sun damage doesn’t have to mean looking less than golden. Create the look of healthy radiance with Clarins Sunkissed Summer Bronzer Compact. This trio of tropical leaf-embossed powders warms the complexion while an iridescent pop of coral brings a beachy glow to cheeks. Go for all-day eyes. When you’re embracing a laid-back look, a fully done eye can be overkill. A basic tint and some mascara is a simple way to achieve a put-together but fuss-free style. Using a waterproof formula can give you the confidence that your lashes are in perfect condition and ready for whatever the day may bring. If you have a favorite formula, check to see whether a waterproof version is available.

Make it matte. For lip color that lasts from sunrise to moonlight, matte lipstick is the real deal. In addition to being long-lasting, matte lipsticks pack an intense punch of color perfect for a bright and cheerful lip. If a little sparkle or shine is more your thing, go ahead and add a light layer of clear gloss and give yourself bonus points if one layer or both include SPF. Explore new ideas. Switch up your look and unlock new favorites with Macy’s Beauty Box, a $15 monthly subscription to beauty’s most wow-worthy products specially chosen by beauty experts. With a variety of products from the best brands ranging from eye shadows to mascaras to lipsticks, each month you’ll receive five deluxe beauty samples, one bonus item, a collectible cosmetics bag and a $5 beauty coupon available for use in-store and on macys.com.

obligation. If the restoration isn’t complete prior to closing, the seller will escrow a sum equal to 125% of the estimated cost to complete the restoration. If the cost of restoration exceeds 1.5% of the purchase price, then buyer has the option to either take the property along with 1.5% of the purchase price, or receive a refund of the deposit, releasing buyer and seller from all further obligations under the contract.

Real Estate Transactions & Storm Damage: what happens?

4. NO DOUBT, we here in Northwest Broward “dodged the bullet” this time. Selling property in sunny Florida can be very stormy during hurricane season. That is why our contracts provide for the WHAT IFS! Transactions in process may be delayed, but not for long. Below are the casualty and bad weather provisions that govern the terms and conditions of a contract while in process during and after a storm.

attention to the time in relation to the closing date, though, since either party may terminate the contract by delivering a written notice if force majeure continues to prevent performance more than 30 days beyond the closing date.

The FLORIDA REALTORS/FLORIDA BAR “AS-IS” REAL ESTATE CONTRACT FOR SALE AND PURCHASE, APRIL 2017 REVISION, sections that address what to do, when there is delay or damage from a storm or natural disaster:

After a hurricane passes over a property, a buyer often wants to take another look at the property, regardless of whether the buyer is still in the inspection period. This clause generally favors the buyer’s request, as it provides that “Seller shall, upon reasonable notice, provide utilities service and access to Property for appraisals and inspections, including a walk-through (or follow-up walk-through if necessary) prior to Closing.”

1. Section 18(G) Force Majeure This is an automatic extension that comes into play when a dramatic event prevents a party’s performance or closing from happening. It takes an unusual and unplanned event to trigger this “Force Majeure” clause, as you can see from a few of the examples given, such as, hurricanes, acts of God and acts of terrorism. Once the clause is triggered, though, certain time periods (including the closing date, if applicable) will be extended for a reasonable time up to 7 days after the force majeure no longer prevents performance. Parties should pay

2. Section 18(L) Access to Property to Conduct Appraisals, Inspections, and Walk-Through

3.

Section 18(M) Risk of Loss

If the buyer or seller discover casualty damage from the hurricane, this clause describes the rights and obligations of each party. If the cost to restore the property does not exceed 1.5% of the purchase price (this cost includes the cost of pruning or removing damaged trees), then the cost is a seller

Section 83.63, Florida Statutes (Casualty Damage)

This brief section simply provides that if rented residential premises are damaged or destroyed “so that the enjoyment of the premises is substantially impaired, the tenant may terminate the rental agreement and immediately vacate the premises.” This section continues to present a second scenario whereby a tenant may “vacate the part of the premises rendered unusable by the casualty. There are always grey areas, or circumstances that will need further consideration. Real Estate Lawyers and Title Companies, as well as your Realtor, can provide additional clarifications. ‘Making The World A Better Place’ Is The Mission Of Jerry And Lucy Spielman By Dale King

An old adage states: “Charity begins at home.” That’s true, of course. But Jerry and Lucy Spielman, president/publisher and editor-in-chief, respectively, of Boca’s Best Magazine and the two City News Group publications that serve Coral Springs/Parkland and Coconut Creek/Margate, believe charity, caring and friendship unfolds when you reach out to people and organizations, determine their needs and help supply them.

the magazine together, handling payroll, payments and reconciliations and dealing with all financial aspects of the company.

Each Spielman periodical offers its own individual, hyperlocal slice of news and specialty features such as a pet section, legal advice, health tips, a dining guide, columns by local officials, fitness suggestions, financial guidance and tax assistance.

Originally from Peru, she studied banking and finance at an upscale private university in her native country. While her husband enjoys getting out and mingling, Lucy said she prefers “to stay in the office running the magazine.”

Since acquiring the City News Group in November 2015, the Spielmans – who brought with them lots of business savvy, but little experience in the field of publishing -- have taken the magazines to a new level of sophistication and reader appreciation by applying personal rules and tenets of their own.

“We are devoted to trying to make the world a better place, community by community,” she said. “In addition to distributing thousands of print copies of the magazines, we use the Internet and the technological advances of the new digital age to offer a responsive website with the ability to reach so many more people all over the world.”

To truly serve each community, the Spielmans felt they must be part of the goings-on. For that reason, they began sponsoring events that serve local groups. They have also taken part in a number of civic and community activities, putting their own names and sponsorship support behind fundraisers.

“We are trying to do our part to help make the world a little better place,” Lucy noted. “For example, our love of animal rescue organizations that operate all over our community has enabled us to give a free quarter-page ad, each and every month, in all three of our magazines, to both Tri-County Animal Rescue in Boca Raton and the Florida Humane Society in Broward, to help raise awareness of these two very important and popular rescue efforts. We do whatever we can do -- and then we do even more.”

City News Coral Springs/Parkland, City News Coconut Creek/Margate and Boca’s Best Magazine are mailed out to more than 66,000 homes and businesses within the aforementioned region, said Jerry. “Thousands more are distributed around the area at select locations, fairs and city events. These monthly community magazines are filled with local news, activity schedules, a dining guide, an emphasis on ‘charitable causes’ and a roster of local ‘heroes,’ along with many more items of interest to the locals.” With a degree in marketing from Syracuse University and a Masters BA from Barrington University, Jerry has taken that talent on the road again, meeting with business execs, talking the talk with members and leaders of civic organizations and rubbing elbows with influential residents at Chamber breakfasts, Rotary lunches and fundraising dinners. When he’s not out and around in the community, Jerry is in charge of sales. “He’s an amazing sales and marketing guy,” noted Lucy. “Charity is a very important part of our magazine group,” said Lucy, who works in the real estate field while also providing the creative oomph to their local-oriented media. Her roster of tasks is lengthy, including putting

“In another effort to reach out to the community, Jerry and I have joined the Boca Raton Rotary Club. For those of you who do not know what the Rotary Club stands for, its motto is ‘Service above self.’ For more than 110 years, the Rotary’s guiding principles have been the foundation of their values: service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership.” “Also, we are active in more than six local Chambers of Commerce and we participate in as many local charitable causes and events as we can. The only limit on our ability to serve others is a time and money restraint. What events we showcase, causes we profile and the good we do, is only a small part of what we all can do overall to help others. We will strive to do more and more with each and every magazine we publish. Comments, ideas, stories, events, causes are all welcome on our site. “Donations are appreciated and acknowledged,” Lucy added. “We are looking for sponsors to help us expand our charity section by helping to pay some of our production costs so we can free up more pages for good deeds. Many of our local events are open to all who wish to participate or just contribute.”

Jerry explained the purpose and design of the Spielmans’ three monthlies. “Instead of providing one big magazine, we offer three local publications geared to the individual community. We do not overwhelm readers with pages and pages of ads for the same industry, like real estate or legal.” The Spielmans single out residents who have gone above and beyond to help others. They recently published an article about PROPEL -- People Reaching Out to Provide Education and Leadership. It was founded in 2004 by real estate investors and philanthropists Jim and Marta Batmasian, a Boca couple that has donated millions of their dollars to philanthropic causes. To Jerry and Lucy, the Batmasians are models for charitable community leaders. So is Gregory Fried, owner of a Delray Beach jewelry store and leader in some 60-plus charities. He was recently featured in a Boca’s Best story entitled, “The Charity Man.” “Hats off to Rosemary and Ben Krieger, who sponsored us in the Rotary of Boca Raton. They personify what it means ‘to give,’” the Spielmans noted in a recent edition. The Spielmans themselves are no slouches, distributing over 330 free Disney on Ice tickets to needy kids in 2017 and over $10,000 in new clothing to kids and charities. As you thumb through copies of Boca’s Best and City News, you’ll find the Spielman touch. They sponsor ads urging residents to adopt puppies, kittens, dogs and cats at rescue shelters. They urge readers to support Unicorn Village Academy in West Boca, a school for children with neurodiversities, age 13-22, unable to succeed in regular school setting. Earlier, in June, City News sponsored and featured the Lisa Boccard Broward Health Walk for Breast Cancer in their City News Magazines. On Aug. 19, they sponsored a “Brunch, Bubbles & Blooms” fundraiser to benefit the HabCenter. They are sponsoring a City of Coral Springs “Golfing for the King” classic Oct. 20 at Carolina Country Club in Margate to benefit the Martin Luther King Scholarship Fund for financially needy children. Later, on Nov. 11, they have organized a NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Walk at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek to benefit that group. There are too many others to list them all. Lucy and Jerry don’t just help the community, they are part of it. They live in West Boca with their three teenage sons and two dogs.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs offers ‘sense of belonging’ By Nicol JeNkiNs

T

hose who risk their lives to fight for our country have an unspoken bond.

During Veterans Day and all year round, the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs provides support to local veterans and their families. They want to make sure veterans feel a sense of belonging to their local community when they return home. Since 2013, the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs has fulfilled their mission of being a community veterans group formed to serve veterans and their families in Coral Springs and surrounding communities. As stated in their mission statement, they are “veterans serving veterans and their families” from all branches of the military services- Coast Guard, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Army. In addition, they are a coalition of all eras of military service from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam to the current War on Terrorism. The group welcomes spouses, descendants, widows, widowers of veterans and volunteers who want to help make a difference. The Coalition has a dedicated team of Board members who welcome veterans and their families. The Board consists of Ron Stancavage, President; Ernie Kubasek, Vice President; Alan Paley, Treasurer; Tony Bianco, Service Officer; and Cheri Tishman, Secretary. The Coalition currently has 50 members and is accepting new members wishing to serve and be recognized at various events in Coral Springs and the surrounding towns, including the City of Coral Springs Veterans Day ceremony held on November 11th at 10:45 am at Veterans Park, located at 8601 Royal Palm Blvd., Coral Springs. The ceremony includes speeches by veterans and politicians, a 21-gun salute, placing of wreath and raising of the military and United States flags. “Veterans Day is the holiday in which we pause to honor those men and women who served in the military, and then returned home to blend into society and become productive citizens of this great country. We must never forget the debt that this country owes its veterans, for the time they spent away from home and their commitment to put their life on the line for their country. Memorial Day is the holiday when we honor

our deceased veterans and pay them the respect that they most certainly deserve,” said Ron Stancavage, President of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs. The community organization helps veterans not only on holidays but year round. “We can assist local veterans by understanding their needs, and then helping them to navigate through the system to get the needed result. If a veteran has an issue with the VA, we can help them by either taking them to the local VA Clinic, or calling someone to handle their issue. Many veterans have unresolved cases pending, and we can refer them to a local VA Claims representative or to their local Congressperson. We can also work with the City that the veteran lives

in, in the event they are being cited for code violations,” said Alan Paley, Treasurer. The Coalition has also participated in various local events and collected new items (clothing and toiletries) to be distributed to local veterans and those living in The Veterans Home in Pembroke Pines. In addition, they have purchased 200 daily bus passes and donated them to the William Kling VA Clinic in Sunrise. Veterans who use the bus to get to and from the VA Clinic will now be able to get there free of charge. Local veterans and their families are encouraged to be part of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs. For more information, visit www. veteranscoalitionofcoralsprings.org/.

Cupping They will be forever known as the purplish red marks that made millions of people wonder and search on the internet when they watched Michael Phelps debut on the Olympics. While it may have looked like several Olympians with the same type of skin marks have been attacked by an octopus, the circles on their body are signs of “cupping”. A few years ago the Denver Broncos player DeMarcus Ware posted a photo on Instagram showing his back covered with 19 clear cups as therapist placed them on his skin. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow have also been photographed with cupping marks on their skin. Cupping is trendy now but it dates much further than even the Olympics, as far as 3000 B.C. It dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1550 B.C. Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which Acupuncture physicians puts special cups on the skin that create suction. Athletes get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, soreness, inflammation, blood flow and relaxation and well-being. A more modern version of cupping uses a rubber, plastic or silicone pump instead of fire to create the vacuum inside the cup. This causes the skin to rise and redden as your blood vessels expand. The cups can be left for several minutes. Bringing blood to areas that it doesn’t normally reach by sucking skin into a cup, which releases connective tissue underneath the skin that wraps around your muscles. Besides this, cupping therapy seems to provoke a relaxation response in some people, which means it’s useful for lowering stress and its negative effects. Why would you consider doing cupping? Cupping provides pain relief, it alleviates cold, cough and allergy symptoms, promotes relaxation, detoxifies the body, heals injuries faster by inducing inflammation, improves skin related conditions, relieves digestive problems like IBS, provides anti-aging effects and can treat carpal tunnel syndrome.

Wondering if cupping really works? A 2012 reports published in the Journal PLos ONE reviewed 135 studies on cupping published between 1992 and 2010. Researchers concluded that cupping has benefits similar to acupuncture or herbal medicine for treating various digestive, skin, hormonal and inflammatory diseases.

One of the biggest advantages to trying alternative practices like cupping therapy, acupuncture and massage therapy is that these methods don’t pose the risk for unwanted side effects like pharmacological drugs or surgery do.

In Thank You for Your Service, Finkel has done something even more extraordinary. Once again, he has embedded with some of the men of the 2-16, but this time he has done it at home, here in the States, after their deployments have ended. He is with them in their most intimate, painful, and hopeful moments as they try to recover, and in doing so, he creates an indelible, essential portrait of what life after war is like, not just for these soldiers, but for their wives, widows, children, and friends, and for the professionals who are truly trying, and to a great degree failing, to undo the damage that has been done. When we ask young men and women to go to war, what are we asking of them? And when they return, what are we thanking them for? Registration not required. Mind and body are linked as part of an integral system that affect our general well being. The mind exert its influence on our body with a elaborate network of endocrine system consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic hormones. Sympathetic is the fight and freight hormone we are family with. It enhances our physical strength and makes us “smarter and stronger” which gets us and likely our ancestors out of trouble. This system still serve us well in today fast paced, multi-task, constant-interruptions era. It helps us to meet the daily unrelenting demands of our time. Unfortunately, the resulting chronic overheighten sympathetic tone produces a high level of stress related hormonescorticosteriods and epinephrine, which increase our cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and increase insulin resistance or outright diabetes. The chronic heighten sympathetic tone also implies the chronic suppression of the parasympathetic system which regulates our digestive system, reproduction/ libido, and most importantly, our immune system. Dysregulation of our immune system would compromise our defense against infections and cancers, and trigger autoimmune diseases ranging from allergy to lupus. Compromised digestive system would affect its motility, in another word, food is not going to go down smoothly- gastroperesis, dyspepsia, esophageal reflux, and irritable bowel with constipation and diarrhea. Together, this might lead to bacterial overgrowth with more of the “bad” gut bacterial- mostly fungus and lesser of the gut friendly symbiotic bacteria. Since the NIH completed it bio-genome projects, high correlation has been found between those that have high level of “non-native” harmful bacteria and increase pervalance of chronic disease such as Alzheimer, Parkinson, multiple sclerosis, type I diabetes, anxiety, and even obesity. And the list keeps growing as research on the subject continues (more of the gut microbiome and its effect as well as suggested treatments has been covered by my earlier articles). Of course manifestation of any particular disease will depends on individual’s genetic propensity. In another word, you are not going to develop cancer just because you are chronically stressed. As you might have guessed by now, the best preventive measure in medicine besides proper level of diet and exercise is to pursue means to enhance our parasympathetic tone to combat our daily stress. Unfortunately there are not enough emphasis by medical community in the preventive care efforts. Currently, only a very small percentage of our medical resources are devoted to the preventive care so it is up to each of us to devote the time and resources for the preventive care. There are many methods to heighten our parasympathetic tone, the clinical proven methods are practicing meditation/ mindfulness, yoga, Taichi, and acupuncture, and especially acupressure massage. Other activities that may help promote relaxation and activate an anabolic response through the parasympathetic nervous system include being surrounded by caring family/ friends/community (“to belong to a clan”), deep breathing, being in nature (such as “forest bathing” practice in Japan), taking a long, relaxing vacation, jogging with your head phone on your favorite music, etc. In another word, anything that would relax you, enhance your focus in the now and presence and always know someone always care and have your back is going to put you at ease, enhancing your parasympathetic tone and dampening your sympathetic tone. I am going to elaborate a few of the clinical proven and most powerful modalities in these columns for the upcoming issues. Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye

BY MINDI RUDAN We’ve all seen them; on the beach, bulging behind summer shorts or marring the look of an otherwise great “gam” or worse---on our own legs in the mirror: Varicose or spider veins. Defined basically as veins that have become enlarged and twisted, the “bulge,” appears when valves or the pair of “leaflet valves” no longer meet properly, and simply put, the valves just don’t work anymore. (Valvular incompetence.) This causes blood being pumped from your heart-- that we often take for granted, hard-working veins carry to and fro-- to back up, if you will, creating the unsightly bulge we know as varicose veins. Most common in the superficial veins in the legs, which are subjected to high pressure from standing, too much sitting, inactivity or the dastardly leg crossing, these veins can actually be found anywhere on the body, even the face. While most people seek remedy for the cosmetic aesthetics, there’s much more reason to check them out—especially as we age. And while there are countless vein clinics, or even medical “spas” that offer to treat the malady, few bear the pedigree of board certified, world-renown cardiologist Ariel Soffer, founder of Soffer Health Institute, now with SIX locations. His professional credits could fill a page alone, but his personal passion for this field and his journey towards it--is much deeper. This IS the doctor who for FOUR years had an ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.”The same doctor medical companies still call to test and give input on new methodology, new tools, techniques and breakthroughs. This IS the doctor who gives a seminar in New Orleans every year for 3-500 other highly skilled physicians who travel from all over the country to learn from him. HIS techniques, his innate diagnostic ability and gain his insight into this specialty. He’s that talented, and that committed. And lucky for us, his SoFla locations are graced by him –and a hand-picked and trained staff every day. His website heralds almost rock star adoration from legions of patients, some whose lives have potentially been saved, and countless others he’s made more livable and enjoyable because of his “vein whisperer-ish” knowledge, talent and years of focused experience. “He’s clearly the top of this pyramid,” offered Adam Kustin, company spokesperson and someone who’s

clearly enamored of Dr. Soffer’s skill and humility after seeing what he does every day. “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice.” And call me crazy, but when you are talking about your vascular health, your overall well-being and your potential to enjoy living life, going to a “medical spa” to be treated for veins that work in tandem with your heart daily—SHOULDN’T be a crap-shoot. “You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” And Dr. Soffer’s ability makes sure patients don’t walk out just cosmetically beautiful, but walk out KNOWING there isn’t a serious hidden health issue that could be life threatening just down the road. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” And fixing the issue is relatively simple. “And pain-free,” he added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” When asked why this doctor has made vein health his focus when he clearly is still regarded as one of America’s

top cardiologists, the answer brought staggering clarity and a character trait we all want in our doctors. “It was emotional for Dr. Soffer. He wanted to stop fixing the sometimes near unfixable issues in cardiology. Instead he wants to help people prevent these lifethreatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life …and he gets an immediate hug,” half-joked Kustin. “He SEES people pain free, enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” With six offices locally, Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach, Hialeah/Miami Lakes, Dr. Soffer is accessible. His staff is multi-lingual, welcoming and most importantly willing to help people start the process. FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CALL

954.246.4555 Soffer Health Institute began in Aventura and now there are several locations, including one in Deerfield Beach at 1877 W. Hillsboro Blvd. They plan to open a Weston location next. Members of the staff speaks Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

When it comes to nutrition, every dog has specific needs and you know them best. Each dog is unique and his or her food should be as well. When deciding which dog food works best for your pet, keep personalized foods like Just Right by Purina in mind, which can help address your dog’s unique needs. It combines your firsthand knowledge with nutritional expertise to create the best dog food blend for your dog. By answering just a few questions about your pet’s breed size, eating habits and more, you can create a personalized blend of food that includes your dog’s name, photo and feeding recommendation that gets shipped directly to your door. “Every pet is an individual and that includes how we feed them,” said veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker, a 17-year veteran of “Good Morning America” and founder of Fear Free. “A highly personalized diet tuned to their specific needs and combined with plenty of exercise and regular veterinary care can dramatically impact their nutrition, health and wellbeing.” Feeding your dog personalized food could help yield these five benefits:

Healthy skin and coat By providing important details about your dog’s skin and its needs, certain ingredients can be included in order to avoid dry and itchy skin. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, along with vitamin A and linoleic acid, can help keep your pup’s skin refreshed and can give your dog’s coat the nourishment it needs to be shiny and healthy.

Ideal body condition Being the right weight can contribute to a lot of different health factors, but having an ideal body condition can be about more than just the amount of food you feed your pet. The right amount of

fats and proteins can help keep your dog right where he or she needs to be. Choosing a formula with chicken, salmon or lamb as the first ingredient can help your dog’s body feel strong and healthy with their high amounts of protein. Just as important, each dog has different metabolisms and different caloric needs, so personalized feeding instructions like those offered by Just Right by Purina can help your dog reach his or her ideal body condition.

Joint health and mobility Many dogs are often on the move – walking, running and playing. Having healthy bones and joints can support your dog’s overall health, especially in developing puppies, large breeds and senior dogs. Choosing a formula with proper amounts of calcium and phosphorus can help support joints and bones.

Brain development Puppies need all the help they can get when it comes to growing and supporting life-long health. Giving them foods that include nutrients like DHA that support brain and vision development can inspire your puppy’s curiosity about the world.

Active lifestyle Overall, diet has a big impact on providing the nutrients needed to energize your dog every day, all day long, and ingredients in their food can provide the complete and balanced pet nutrition that helps promote an all-around active lifestyle. Young or old, big or small, every dog’s nutritional needs are unique. For more helpful tips and ways to benefit your dog at mealtime, visit justrightpetfood.com. www.ciTyNEwsMagaziNE.cOM

First-Responders Welcome Coral Springs’ Newest Resident

C

oral Springs First Responders paid a very special visit to one of our newest, and perhaps most famous resident, a baby girl born at 38 weeks, weighing in at 7lbs, 7ozs and measuring 20 inches, named April. Baby April was not going to let Hurricane Irma stop her from making a grand entrance into the world and as a result, she has left seasoned first-responders with a memory that will last a lifetime. Just like everyone in South Florida, expectant mom Ashley, her husband Hayes, and big brother Caleb, were buttoned up inside their home to wait out the wind and rain from Hurricane Irma. It was early Saturday, just before the storm was approaching when Ashley received a call from her parents, Linda and Bill, in Cape Coral, Florida. As this catastrophic storm jogged west, they needed to evacuate and headed to Coral Springs to seek shelter. This change of forecast turned out to be a blessing in the hours to come. As Sunday rolled in, the storm was bearing down, and most calls for service were put on hold until it was safe for first-responders to go out in the storm, Ashley’s water broke and her contractions started. She and Hayes were readying themselves to head to the hospital in the storm, but alas, it was too late. April was already coming into the world. As calmly as possible, Linda assisted her daughter in delivering baby April, while Hayes called 911 for help. On the other line, trained dispatchers assisted in the delivery, while Fire Chief Frank Babinec in our Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was notified of the medical emergency. He made the decision to have Fire Rescue personnel in nearby Station 43 respond in a utility vehicle. Once on scene, paramedics described a calm, stress-free environment in which April was born. They credited Grandma Linda, who has no medical experience, with the successful delivery of her granddaughter. Ashley and little April needed to be transported to the hospital and the storm was at full-strength. In came the Coral Springs Police Bearcat, an armored rescue vehicle, equipped with SWAT officers and SWAT paramedics to transport mother and baby safely to Coral Springs Medical Center. During the visit with first-responders, the family recounted their experience, and personnel described how this call for service was handled. Chief Babinec explained, “We had 13 high priority calls for service during the storm, but our police and fire worked together to ensure the safety of our residents. The success of this call made all of us in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) stand up and cheer.” Asst. Chief John Whalen added, “I have delivered five babies in my career, and I was so impressed how you calmly handled this emergency situation.”

54

NOVEMBER 2017

Baby April was bestowed gifts from those who were part of her delivery, which included a card with a photo of she and her mom being transported inside of the Bearcat, outfits, a blanket and stuffed animal, but perhaps the cutest gift, a pink onesie donning the CSFD logo and Future Firefighter below it. At the conclusion of the visit, Hayes remarked, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for keeping my wife and my daughter safe.” As residents of our City for the last nine years, they reaffirmed moving to Coral Springs was a great decision and have promised to visit the Fire Station and Police Station in the future. We are truly thankful for the safe and successful delivery of baby April and look forward to seeing her grow up in the City that we proudly serve.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

BY ALAN J. REINDFELD, ESQ

Some Simple Steps on How to Avoid Probate

T

hese are four simple ways to help avoid probate with common types of assets. The attorneys of Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. have experience in avoiding probate and can address all your legal concerns. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. 1.

NAME A BENEFICIARY

Property that lists a transfer on death beneficiary (TOD), or a pay on death beneficiary (POD), or an in trust for beneficiary (ITF), passes directly to the named beneficiary. Therefore naming a beneficiary is a frequently used method of avoiding probate. You may name anyone you choose as a TOD, POD, or ITF on each of your vehicles, your checking and savings accounts, and any annuities, retirement savings, CDs, or other investments that you have. It is as easy as contacting the institution

housing your respective accounts and asking to add a beneficiary to the account.

in avoiding probate. This document is also private, away from the public records of the Court System.

2.

3.

CREATE A REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST

Simply put, a revocable living trust is a changeable or revocable legal agreement, in which you name someone as trustee of your affairs. Upon your death, your chosen trustee will acquire legal title to any property registered in the name of the Trust. They will then be able to decide what to do with your property and possessions according to what your Trust states. In this manner you will be able to avoid many aspects of a traditional will. Naming your trustee must be done through extensive consideration, as they will have a big effect on how your property and possessions are handled after death. A living trust is alterable and assists

SHARE OWNERSHIP

Share ownership means to take title of property with someone else. If you have joint ownership of property or possessions with another person, such as a spouse, you can avoid probate. When one of the owners dies, the title will simply pass on to the other owner thus circumventing probate. You may also be able to use other types of deeds such as enhanced life estate deeds (Lady Bird Deeds) to also avoid probate with real estate. 4.

GIFTING ITEMS

A simple way to avoid probate is to give away items that you don’t want caught up in probate

proceedings. By gifting away your property or possession (especially more expensive items) it cannot go into probate. However, you may be required to file a gift tax return on any items over a certain dollar amount gifted. If you would like more information regarding this article please contact the law offices of Reinfeld Cabrera Tison. t times, spending hours in the kitchen can be a relaxing, enjoyable experience. However, even for avid home cooks, a busy weeknight isn’t one of those times. Fortunately, solutions like sheet pan suppers make it easy to create dishes with exceptional flavor depth that come together quickly and clean up just as fast. Keeping a variety of vegetables on hand makes it simple to pull together a family meal. Onions, for example, are versatile, flavorful, easy to store, have a long shelf-life and are available year-round from U.S. growers. An added benefit when cooking with onions is that you’re serving up a good source of fiber. For more tasty recipes to make supper a cinch, visit onions-usa.org and usaonions.com.

producers in the United States. Seasonal differences like flavor and texture are noticeable and highlighted during these time frames: Fall and winter onions (available August-April ) have multiple layers of thick, paper-like layers of skin. Known for their mild to pungent flavor profile, these varieties can be eaten raw, and are ideal for roasting, caramelizing, grilling and frying because they have less water content. Spring and summer onions (available March-August) have thin,

often transparent skins and are typically sweeter and milder than fall and winter varieties. Due to their high water content and mild flavor, they are best used for raw, pickled, lightly cooked or grilled dishes. Storing Store onions in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, not the refrigerator. Do not store whole, unpeeled onions in plastic bags. Lack of air movement reduces storage life. Peeled or cut onions may be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

can (21 ounces) Lucky Leaf Premium Cherry Fruit Filling, divided

On lightly floured surface, unroll pie crust. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon. Roll up tightly and slice into 1/2-inch rounds, like miniature cinnamon rolls. Press miniature cinnamon rolls evenly into bottom and sides of 9-inch pie plate, making sure there are no spaces between rolls. Pour fruit filling on top of crust. In large bowl, using pastry blender, combine stick of butter, flour and brown sugar, until crumbly. Sprinkle over apple filling.

Heat oven to 350 F. Line muffin tins with 18 paper liners. Bake pie until top and crust are golden brown and filling is bubbling, about 40-45 minutes (cover top and crust with foil, if necessary, to prevent from getting too dark). Remove from oven and allow to cool.

Place one chocolate cookie in bottom of each paper liner. In mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs and vanilla until light and fluffy. Fold in half of fruit filling. Fill each muffin liner about three-fourths full with mixture. Bake 20-25 minutes, or until done. Cool. Top each cheesecake with spoonful of remaining fruit filling.

In small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and milk to form icing. Add more sugar or milk, if necessary, to reach desired consistency. Drizzle icing over cooled pie.

(Family Features) Fall is the perfect time to welcome warm, robust flavors to your kitchen as well as your wine glass. With its bold, spicy, dark fruit flavors, cabernet sauvignon is a perfect wine for crisp fall weather. Cabernet sauvignon is more versatile for pairing than some believe. It pairs well with different cheeses, meats, hearty vegetables and even fish. The key to creating a great dining experience is balancing the flavor of the meal with an elegantly balanced wine. When cooking, consider the three main flavors: sweet, salty and sour. Sweet sauces can make cabernet sauvignon taste harsh and astringent, which takes away from the fresh fruit flavors in the wine. However, sour and salty flavors can make the wine taste more vibrant, creating a velvety mouthfeel of soft tannins while making the fruit taste more pronounced. A well-balanced cabernet, such as Sequoia Grove Winery’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, pairs well with any meat or fish that is prepared with an acidic sauce or when given a squeeze of lemon juice. The winery, located in the heart of the Rutherford region in Napa Valley, specializes in the production of elegant, foodfriendly cabernet sauvignon. Crafted by winemaker Molly Hill, the wine has aromatics of bright black cherries and blackberry, followed by cinnamon with a touch of black pepper. The palate is elegant with a round, full body, soft tannins and tasty blackberry flavors. This recipe for a savory lamb shank stew has just the right amount of salt, acid and spice to create a deliciously balanced meal that is perfect to pair

Using blender or stick blender, add generous squeeze of lemon juice to cooking liquid and puree until smooth. Pour some sauce over shanks. Serve with cauliflower puree and glass of Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon.

Passage of Time Makes You Thankful

F

or those who mark the passing of time with holidays, surely you’re having as much trouble as I am believing Thanksgiving is almost upon us. Not all holidays generate reflection, but Thanksgiving certainly does for many of us. Every year, the Interfaith Coalition of Coral Springs and Parkland hosts a PreThanksgiving Interfaith Unity Service where clergy and people from all different faiths come together to remember to give thanks together. It is a wonderful service that reminds that we are all connected and that we are all in this together. This year’s service will be on Tuesday, November 22, Mayor Hunschofsky at 7:00pm at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Coral Springs. I hope you will be able to join us. Last month we concluded the removal of debris from Hurricane Irma on an accelerated schedule and we did not have to cancel any events. Our Movies in the Park event, our Halloween Festival and Trunk or Treat, the Parkland Dash 5K, and all of our regular monthly events went off without a hitch despite the massive undertaking of removing storm debris from Parkland’s public streets, public areas, and private communities. How was this possible? Well, let’s just say I’m extraordinarily thankful for the City of Parkland staff and their unwavering commitment to our residents. The value of the work of City staff cannot be overstated because it’s not just a matter of ensuring our events take place so residents have activities. The Parkland Dash is an annual fundraising event that provides support not only for our local Broward County Public Schools, but also for charity. If this event had been canceled, neither Parkland’s public schools nor the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation would receive helpful financial support. We should all be thankful for the work of City staff, the many volunteers, and the runners and walkers who all come together in the early morning hours one Sunday every Fall for this charitable community event. Fittingly Veteran’s Day is also in November and we are all grateful for the service to our country and example of selflessness of members of our military forces. The freedoms they have enabled through generations of dedication and sacrifice make so much possible for us. Personally, I am thankful for my family, my friends, and the opportunity to serve the community I love. As a resident, I am thankful for the amazing, caring, hardworking volunteers throughout Parkland who regularly give back and make our City such a wonderful place to live. It’s easy to lose sight of all the good things for which we should be truly grateful: the fast pace and pressure of our daily lives almost ensures it. That reminds me, I’m also grateful that our fast pace gets a break in November as we set back our clocks and pick up an hour of sleep on November 5. This month take a moment to stop and think about what you’re thankful for. If you’d like to share that with me, I’d love to hear it. You can always reach me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org.

Florida Panthers Alumni and Coral Springs First Responders Skate for Charity During Pucks for Bucks

Florida Panthers Alumni and Coral Springs First Responders skate for Coral Springs Community Chest during Pucks for Bucks.

T

he Florida Panthers partnered with Coral Springs Community Chest for the second annual Pucks for Bucks charity hockey game benefiting the Coral Springs Community Chest.

There is no paid staff, so 98 percent of the funds raised are reinvested back into the community. Coral Springs Community Chest has generated more than two million dollars for non-profit organizations serving Coral Springs residents. The board of trustees is: Maureen Berk, Claudette Bruck, Brenda Clark, Connie Guice, Susan Grant, Lynne Martzall, Pat Mirabello, Cort Neimark, Maria Pierson, Alice Zendel Simon and Janice Zaitz. Honorary Trustees are Coral Springs Mayor Walter “Skip” Campbell, Vice Mayor Dan Daley and Commissioners Joy Carter, Lou Cimaglia and Larry Vignola; and Florida House State Representative Jared Moskowitz.

Florida Panthers alumni Tomas Fleischmann, Tomas Vokoun, Peter Worrell, Bill Lindsay, Shawn Thornton and more laced up their skates for the alumni squad. “The Florida Panthers were thrilled to partner with the Coral Springs Community Chest for Puck for (L to R) Tony Pustizzi, Coral Springs Interim Deputy City Bucks,” said Panthers Vice President Manager; Panther Alumnus Shawn Thornton; Alice Simon, of Broadcasting and Panthers Alumni Coral Springs Community Chest; John Columbo, Florida Panthers; and Randy Moller, Florida Panthers Vice President Randy Moller. “With the overwhelming of Broadcasting and Panthers Alumnus, at Pucks for Bucks. support from our alumni, we thank the first responders of Broward County for their service to the community. It was exciting to have our alumni and the first responders hit the ice together and provide the community with another fun and exciting hockey game for a great cause.” Proceeds from ticket admissions, raffle and silent auction were donated to Coral Springs Community Chest, which funds organizations that have services and programs benefiting Coral Springs residents. Coral Springs Community Chest, a 501c3 non-profit organization, was founded in 1988 on the premise that community resources should provide for community needs.

PUZZLE ANSWERS

LEGALLY SPEAKING Ethical Verse Moral BYLINE HERE

By Jeremiah Whyre of the manifestation of the Word ministries along With terry ChamBerlain

nowadays there is a lot of talk about ethics and morality. technically, there is no difference between the two. in the dictionary, the words are used almost interchangeably. in society, however, there is a distinct difference. ethics are the rules that govern acceptable behavior. ethics are an expression of efficiency. Because ethics are a set of rules that people agree to abide by, they can change with the culture of the society. morality is concerned with right and wrong. morality refers to a standard of behavior that is true whether anyone agrees with it or not. morality is an absolute truth, above the opinions of humans. If morality can be redefined by humans, it isn’t morality, it’s ethics.

hitler wasn’t unethical, he was immoral. he was downright wrong. What he did wasn’t unethical, it was evil. in order to have morality, you must have a god, someone (not something) that defines what is right or wrong, someone who is above human opinion, who prefers one thing to another. morality is about conscience. to violate one’s conscience is wrong, not unethical. most people think that conscience is what makes you feel guilty, but that is not at all correct. Conscience is what makes you aware of what is right or wrong. the guilty feelings part we add on ourselves. guilt is actually self-condemnation. god doesn’t condemn us, he merely makes us aware of what is right or wrong. you will notice, i said right or wrong. it’s both. our conscience, when we learn to listen to it, will not only show us what god doesn’t want us to do, it will show us what is from him and what is not. it will show us what his will is. it will guide us and give us wisdom. www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

functioning in a moral way isn’t merely avoiding bad things, it is pursuing good things, or, in other words, love. love is an unsentimental dynamic that says, “i want the best for you enough to give you my best.” so Jesus identified the highest moral principle when he said, “greater love has no one than that they should lay down their life for another.” society struggles to establish an ethical standard because the rules governing that standard are human-made, and they can thereby be changed, and often are. since there is no absolute dynamic that the ethical standard comes from (unlike morality), the standard ends up being based on what is most popular.

so today, people function in our society in ways that are declared ethical even though not many years ago they were considered immoral, and indeed, according to the definition of morality that comes from beyond humanity, they still are. People very much want to abolish morality and just have ethics because ethics are so fluid and changeable. But if you abolish morality, you abolish god (which indeed, is frequently the goal). this is because, if there is no god, there is no right or wrong, merely what people decide. “you can’t force your morality on me, nor i on you. What’s wrong for you isn’t necessarily wrong for me.” if you follow that road down to its logical conclusion, you find that, if there is no morality and no god, there is no purpose for existence except to give in to one’s instincts, desires and feelings, which is the same as the rest of the animals in the animal kingdom. indeed, morality is what sets us apart from them.
