A weekend packed with art, crafts and entertainment for all ages is planned for the inaugural Tamarac Arts & Crafts Festival.

By Shannon PeaSe “We are creating history having the first outdoor arts and crafts festival in Tamarac,” said Peter Mason, executive director of the Tamarac Chamber of Commerce.

The free, two-day outdoor event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 2nd and 3rd in the vicinity of the Tamarac Community Center at 8601 W. Commercial Blvd.

The event, designed to bring local residents of all generations together, is presented by the Tamarac Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Tamarac. About 50 local vendors will display arts and crafts and sell handmade items and other goods during the festival. Exhibitors include artists who will sell paintings and other forms of art as well as vendors featuring jewelry, home and garden items, pet accessories and farmers’ market-style food. Posters commemorating the inaugural event will also be sold during the festival.

Entertainment including music, dancing, comedy and more, will take place throughout each day on the City stage. There will also be food trucks and a kids’ zone with a number of art-related interactive activities for children to try.

“It’s designed for residents and visitors…to show them that this is a great place,” Mason said. “We want it to have a hometown feel.”

The Tamarac Chamber has 175 members and two full time staff members.

The Chamber is involved in other events including Taste of Tamarac, health expos, business expos and other annual and monthly events.

Vendor space for the Tamarac Arts and Crafts Festival is still available and exhibitor opportunities for a 10X10 space are offered throughout the month of March.

Three Girls Committed to Making the World a Better Place

Heart Strings began when three friends, Hanna, Stacey and Sofia wanted to start a charitable organization and help others in need.

They designed a unique line of fabric bracelets and spirit bands that they sell in boutiques, at fundraisers and on social media. 3 Heart Strings donate s100% of all profits to a different charity every month. Any charity is eligible.

Hanna, Stacey and Sofia are on track to donate over $8,000 in 2016. So far donations have been made to No My Daughterâ&#x20AC;ŚFind a Cure Now, Pediatric Cancer Foundation (PCF), Mazon, Hope for Harrison and in Jacobâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shoes.

Recently, RELAY FOR LIFE and the American Cancer Society have partnered with 3 Heart Strings to help raise money for their organizations. A RELAY FOR LIFE team in New Jersey has already sold out of their first order of custom fabric bracelets.

3 Heart Strings was recognized by The City Commissioners and Mayor of Parkland, Florida for their outstanding efforts as citizens. Hanna, Stacey and Sofia work hard to raise much needed funds for non profit organizations. They are committed to being outstanding role models in their community.

“9 knockdowns…5 Miracles!”

It’s the title of my autobiography. It took a lifetime to write, but I finished it in 6 months, as I wrote a page per day. The 9 knockdowns in the title include bombings in Belgium, France and Casablanca.

Friday, May 10, 1940 a mild and sunny day started out differently for the children attending school. We were told not to report to school. I was seven years old at the time. The streets of Brussels were filled with excited men and women circulating rumors which included German parachutists and bombings. My brother and I stayed home that day. We found out that the invasion of France and the Low Countries, including Holland, Luxemburg and Belgium had started. Our parents were Czech citizens, and our father went to the mairie (city hall) to get papers (visas) allowing us to leave Belgium. That night my mother lit the Sabbath candles as she had done all her life using silver four-cornered candle holder.

Four days later, Tuesday, May 14 we found out that the neutral city of Rotterdam (Holland) had been bombed and strafed by German Stuka bombers, killing almost 900 Civilians and destroying 30,000 homes, leaving 78,000 homeless. Four days earlier Germany attacked Belgium, France, Holland and Luxemburg with2,500 bombers and 136 armored divisions.

No war had been declared; the Nazis depended on murderous sneak attacks called Blitzkrieg,(lightning war) to force these small, neutral countries to surrender. This is when my childhood dreams turned into nightmares, and my innocence was crushed forever. Our Exodus began, and we moved 14 times until the Americans, led by General Patton invaded.

We ran with our scant belongings stuffed in pillowcases. We boarded a train at the North Station and took off for France. We stayed at an abandoned farm for 2 weeks, then found out the Germans were looking for Jews to deport. We then traveled on foot, by car and bus until we reached Bayonne. We boarded a ship carrying 1,600 refugees; the purser made us disembark the ship to get our own food in town. This consisted of baguettes and cheese. When we returned from town, the ship had sailed without us. We then boarded an old freighter and started north. Two days later we spotted the debris and wreckage left by our first ship, which had been torpedoed by a German U-boat.

Days later we docked at Casablanca, Morocco. The next 2.5 years were a nightmare, much of which has found a permanent home deep in my subconscious. Years later a psychiatrist tried for 3 years to deliver my past to me; the only thing that “shrunk” was my wallet. I call this period of my life my personal, modern-day “10 PLAGUES”. These included

My husband and I are in our late 60’s and have a 45-year-old son who we have been helping financially his entire life. I should probably tell you that he is very smart, and has a college degree in accounting. However, in today’s electronic age, it c an be ver y dif f icult for a Personal Representative or Trustee of a person’s estate to have knowledge of assets and debts of an Estate if it is all stored electronic ally.

Electronic reward points depend on a person’s c ard c ontract if they maintain any value af ter a person’s death.

What Do Buyers Want in a Resale Home?

E

veryone wants something new. And by new, I don’t just mean something they did not have before, but something no one has had before – something brand new. New home communities offer innovative designs, with the latest upgrades and amenities. However, this comes with a price. “New” costs more than “used” or, as we say in real estate, “resale”.

Resale homes generally cost less than new homes, which means a lower price per square foot. Like buyers of all products, real estate buyers want more for their money, and they can find that in a resale home.

What do buyers look for in a resale home? First, good condition. Homes that are well maintained and cared-for bring a higher price. Good condition and cleanliness on visible items, such as paint, floors, base boards and the like, demonstrate that other components, such as air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems, have been well maintained too.

Updates and upgrades are desirable, too. Why? Because they allow buyers to finance these items through their mortgage, rather than having to pay out-of-pocket for upgrades after closing. Buyers would rather buy a resale home with a new roof, new appliances, or new A/C system, even if the price is higher than a comparable home down the block that requires such upgrades. Inexpensive improvements, such as new grout, paint or carpet, often result in quicker sales and higher prices. More expensive improvements should be considered when components are on their last leg, such as appliances, broken light fixtures and fans.

At the end of the day, price is the key. A newer home will sell at a higher price per square foot than older homes in the next subdivision. An older home with updates and upgrades will sell for more than the one next door where the owner has not yet invested in updates. A home that has been neglected and shows signs of disrepair, will appeal to those who can afford to buy at a low price to allow for investment but not wind up over market value when done. So, it all depends on what the buyer is looking for, and how much they have to spend.

All homes can be sold; it’s just a matter of price. Can Acupuncture Treat Colds and Flu

C

old and flu season is upon us and the flu shot has shown not to be effective this year. Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine helps to prevent the cold and flu and speeds up recovery if one comes down with symptoms by simply strengthening the body’s immune system and has been doing it successfully since the 17th century. Each year more than 100,000 people are hospitalized due to complications from influenza or “the flu” virus. Unfortunately, most of us get the flu at least once in our lifetime. The associated signs and symptoms are fever, sore throat, fatigue, runny nose, dry cough, congestion, muscle and body ache, sneezing and watery eyes. Colds are much less severe than the flu and cause less severe symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, sore throat and headaches. Colds make you feel lousy but it’s a sign that the body’s resources are strong and vital, working to return you to a state of good health. In Chinese medicine colds and flu are considered to be an external pathogen invading the body. Clinical studies have shown that using Acupuncture as a preventative approach to colds and flu can reduce the incidence of upper respiratory tract infection and shorten the duration of the illness. Acupuncture works by strengthening each individual underlying weakness and boosting their immune system. Allopathic medicine uses vaccinations to inject a variation of the virus into a person to immunize them from the illness; however, with so many variations of the virus, vaccines don’t always work. Studies have also shown that certain blood counts and immune enhancing chemicals stay elevated for at least 3 days following an acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture treatments can last from 30 minutes to an hour and most patients are pleasantly surprised to discover that treatments involve no pain and are quite relaxing. On average adults need to be seen 4 times a year at the change of seasons to increase immunity to the changing environment. It is imperative to receive treatments before feeling the symptoms of the flu or cold. Prevention is the key to everything and patients will benefit more receiving treatment before the onset. If symptoms appear, the earlier the intervention the more effective treatments will be.

Bunions

B

unions are more technically known as hallux abductovalgus.

People usually think of a bunion as a “bump” on the inside of their foot. However, the development of a bunion is much more complicated than this. A common misconception is that ill-fitted shoes and high heels cause bunions. However, the general consensus is that genetics and biomechanical factors (ex. excessive pronation) contribute to bunion formation.

With a bunion, the bone on the inside of your foot (1st metatarsal), begins to splay outward. This in turn causes the big toe to move in the opposite direction. Because of this movement, the joint become maligned. Because the joint is not in its proper position, over time, arthritis can develop in the joint. Bunions are progressive and as the deformity becomes severe, the bump becomes more noticeable and the big toe can cross over the 2nd toe. Sometimes the bump itself becomes painful when it rubs against shoes.

A bursa (fluid filled sac) can form over the bump and can become inflamed (bursitis).

Bunions are diagnosed clinically and with x-rays. Your foot & ankle specialist will be able to determine the severity of your bunion and which procedure is best should you require surgery.

Bunions are treated both conservatively and surgically. The severity of the patient’s symptoms will determine the treatment. Surgery is not recommended unless the bunion interferes with the patient’s daily activities. Conservative treatment options include accommodating the deformity. This is accomplished by wearing shoes with a wider toe box, padding, custom made orthotics, cortisone injections, and antiinflammatory medications.

The only way to “get rid” of the bunion is through surgery. There are many different surgical procedures for a bunion and these will depend on your x-rays. One of the most common procedures is an Austin bunionectomy. This is when the bump is shaved down. Then a “V” cut is made on the side of the bone. The bone is then shifted over and secured with 1 or 2 screws. This is an outpatient procedure that takes approximately 30-45 minutes. Allergy and Antibiotics Overuse

W

hen we think of antibiotic overuse, we don’t generally think of allergies. In the last two to three decades, immunologists and allergists have noted a dramatic increase in the prevalence of allergies. The American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology reports that some 40%–50% of schoolchildren worldwide are sensitized to one or more allergens resulting in allergies of the skin such as eczema as the most common kind (10–17%) with a close second, respiratory allergies such as asthma and rhinitis (~10%), and probably the most alarming type food allergies such as those to peanuts (~8%). This isn’t just happening in the US. Other industrialized countries have seen increases as well. This rise has mirrored the increased use of antibiotics, particularly in children for common viral infections such as colds and sore throats. Recent studies show that they may be connected.

While antibiotics fight infections, they also reduce the normal bacteria in our gastrointestinal system, the so-called gut microbiome. Because of the interplay between gut bacteria and the normal equilibrium of cells of the immune system, the gut microbiome plays an important role in the maturation of the immune response.

When this interaction between bacteria and immune cells does not happen, the immune system responds inappropriately to innocuous substances such as food or pollen.

Exposure to the microbes at an early age is important for full maturation of our immune systems. Reducing those microbes may make us feel cleaner, but our immune systems may suffer. A study from 2005 found that infants exposed to antibiotics in the first 4–6 months have a 1.3–5-fold higher risk of developing allergy. And infants with reduced bacterial diversity, which can occur with antibiotic use, have increased risk of developing eczema. And it’s not the just the antibiotics kids take that can make a difference. It’s also the antibiotics their mothers take.

The Copenhagen Prospective Study on Asthma in Childhood Cohort reported that children whose mothers took antibiotics during pregnancy were almost twice as likely to develop asthma compared to children whose mothers did not take antibiotics during pregnancy.

Judging from those early childhood antibiotics usage studies, it would be easy to draw a conclusion regarding the strong relationship of early antibiotics exposure to allergy. But I also believe that even late exposure to antibiotics (past infancy) continue to play a similar role in our allergy developments. A good example will be a prevalence of many non-allergy immigrant children and young adults alike from developing countries also develop allergies after they have been settled down in the developed countries for a period of time.

While antibiotic overuse seemingly has caused the increasing cases of allergy disease in addition to the known cause of increasing bacterial resistance, prebiotics/ probiotics may actually provide some protection. A study on liver transplant recipients shows a lower rate of infection with receipt of prebiotics and probiotics before surgery, according to a meta-analysis published in a recent issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

We should strengthen our immune system by regularly taking a diet rich in the prebiotics/probiotics or using a probiotics supplement if dietary intake is not adequate. And keeping our finger crossed that the regiment would also “re-align” our inappropriate immune system response to innocuous substances for many of the allergy victims.

hen we think of fitness, what comes to mind? For some, the idea of starting the journey towards being more fit is a bit intimidating. Fad diets, extreme exercise programs, and other get fit quick programs are alluring – at first.

he pet overpopulation problem is real. Most people see this, but many don’t realize how they can help. Fortunately, there are many ways one can get involved. Simply spaying or neutering an animal is one way to make a difference. Another way is to adopt from a Humane Society, other shelter, or a local rescue group. Sadly, the Humane Society of the United States reports, “only about 30 percent of pets in homes come from shelters or rescues.” For those that want to do even more, there is fostering.

Fostering comes in many forms. The term, “foster care,” when applied to animals, refers to care for orphaned, stray, ill, or otherwise un-homed animals. Foster care implies care for a term, not forever, which would be termed an adoption. Fostering could be caring for a litter of kittens until they are weaned, treating an injured animal until healed, or caring for a terminally ill dog until his quality of life is no longer good. Fostering for a shelter or rescue group often simply means to provide housing for and care for an animal under that group’s control until that animal is ready to move on to the next step, which ultimately would be a forever home.

Fostering a pet from a rescue of shelter has many positive effects. Fostering allows dogs and cats to be socialized in homes, reduces stress, decreases the incidence of illness and spread of disease, and even allows ill or injured animals to recover more quickly and get personal attention they might need. A dog or cat that is fostered is more likely to be placed in an appropriate home as the foster parent will know more about that animal and will be able to help ensure a good match.

A good foster is hard to find. There are many challenges that foster caregivers face.

At the top is emotional attachment. Some people don’t foster sick or older animals because they would be too sad if the animal died. For others, the attachment to the particular animal becomes so strong that one wants to adopt the fostered animal. A good foster parent wouldn’t be tempted to adopt their foster pet unless there’s a very good reason because often doing so limits one’s ability to foster other animals.

If you are interested in becoming a foster, the first step is to educate yourself more on the rewards and realities of fostering. There are many resources available online that tackle the subject more in depth than the scope of this article is able.

The second step is to connect with a local shelter or local rescue group. There are numerous rescue groups that are in South Florida: Adopt-A-Bull Rescue, Coastal Boxer Rescue, Pets In Distress, and A Better Life Rescue are rescue groups that I’m aware of to name a few. Ten year-old Fiona Shanley from Coral Springs has qualified to compete in a World Championship competition, the Olympics of Irish Dance, in March in Glasgow, Ireland.

F

iona, daughter of Broward Center president and CEO Kelley Shanley, is the only one from South Florida who qualified in her age group.

A member of the Drake School of Irish Dance, Fiona began jigging around the house at four years old after watching the stage production of Riverdance.

She began competing, and at age 7, set the goal to reach the world championships. She kept moving up levels, and in December qualified for the World Championship at the southern regional completion with girls from 14 states, Washington DC and Mexico.

The Friendship Initiative

he Friendship Initiative and the Museum of Discovery and Science have joined forces to create a fun-filled day for families complete with contests, activities and museum exploration.

Packed full of fun, Dream Big Day takes place from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 12 at the museum. The day, which raises awareness about the mission of The Friendship Initiative, will include interactive museum exhibits, music with the School of Rock, theater with Broadway Bound, fitness with All 4 One Fitness, make and take art projects, contests and plenty of surprises.

The Friendship Initiative is a non-profit Parkland-based organization which pairs children with special needs with typical children so they can learn from each other and form friendships.

The Friendship Initiative, formerly called Tomorrow’s Dreams Today, was created by Jeb Niewood. The goal is to bring together the special needs population with the typical population to form friendships. Dream Big Day, Niewood said, “is meant to raise visibility of who we are and what we do.”

The Friendship Initiative offers programs including Rock Dreams, where children and young adults with special needs (aka the Rock Stars) come to sing and dance while trying their hand at a variety of musical instruments including keyboards, guitars and

percussion while paired up with student volunteers (aka Roadies).

The program is open to those with any type of special need, Niewood explained.

Fit Friends is a fitness program designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program focuses on wholebody fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each session begins with a light warm up followed by aerobic and strength circuit training.

Dream Big Day will highlight the services and programs the organization provides.

School of Rock will have house band performing in the courtyard and will also have space dedicated to spotlighting the Rock Dreams program. There will also be fitness demonstrations throughout the day, a theater arts program operating out of the museum theater and an engaging interactive art program for kids. A number of exhibitors will also be on hand to provide information on a range of services and programs for those with specials needs.

The organization relies on sponsorships and donations from the community for program funding, and with future plans to create an all-inclusive community park in Parkland, recently created a fundraising committee.

Dream Big Day takes place from noon to 4 p.m. at the Museum of Discovery and Science, 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale. Activities are included with the museum admission price of $15 per adult, $14 per senior and $13 per child ages 2-12.

Race for Women’s Wellness Half Marathon and 5K to raise funds for women who cannot afford mammograms

ace up your sneakers to run for a good cause at this year’s Half Marathon & 5K Race for Women’s Wellness in Coral Springs.

Nearly 2,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the annual Half Marathon & 5K Race for Women’s Wellness-- all in the name of breast cancer awareness. The event will be held on Saturday, March 26th.

Both races are presented by the City of Coral Springs and Broward Health, with proceeds benefitting the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, which raises funds for women who cannot afford mammograms.

The driving force of this event is to raise funds for women who cannot afford mammograms and to save lives. The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund was founded in 2003 by Vincent Boccard and his wife, Terry, in honor of Vincent’s sister, Lisa Boccard, who has battled breast cancer for over two decades.

The inspiration for the original 5K in 2006 came from two Broward Health Coral Springs physicians, Dr. David Silver and Dr. Mark Shachner. It was their vision that this annual event would become the signature fundraiser for providing free mammograms to women in financial need, according to Epes.

This year marks the 11th year for the 5K Run/Walk and the 4th year for the Half Marathon.

“The mission of the Race is to raise funds for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund (LBBCF). The mission of the LBBCF is to provide funding for breast care to women in our community who are financially unable

“Since its inception, the Fund has screened more than 2,000 women, of which 80 tested positive for cancer. These women are still alive today, through the additional services they received within the Broward Health system. Additionally, 100% of the funds

raised, go directly to patients’ needs,” said Epes.

Over the past 10 years, the event has grown in attendance among cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, runners and supporters. The event also serves as a gathering for those impacted by cancer to support one another.

“The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund’s signature fundraiser event is the Race for Women’s Wellness.

What began as a small 5K run on the Broward Health Coral Springs hospital campus has, in recent years, grown to a half marathon thanks to a partnership with the City of Coral Springs. Now the half marathon & 5k draws much anticipation from runners from other parts of the Unites States and some even abroad to enjoy a fast and paved course that winds through the City,” added Epes.

The race time starts at 6 am for the Half Marathon and 7:30 am for the Run/Walk at the Coral Springs Tennis Center. The event is open to all ages and skill levels. There will be a four-hour time limit for runners to complete the half marathon, which equals a pace of 18 minutes per mile or faster.

wo weeks ago, the nation rejoiced as news broke that four Americans held by Iran would finally be returned to their families. Yet Robert Levinson of Coral Springs, who went missing from Iran’s Kish Island in March 2007, was not part of the deal.

Bob Levinson had traveled to Iran to meet with contacts for a case he had been working. As has widely been reported in the news media, Bob was a 28-year veteran of the FBI and DEA who had been on contract with the CIA. In 2010, the Levinsons received a video of Bob in which he asks the United States government to help him. In 2011, the family received pictures of Bob dressed in an orange jumpsuit.

Combine Brussels sprouts with all ingredients except peppers and balsamic syrup. Toss Brussels sprout mixture and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Transfer mixture to sheet pan and roast in oven for 15 minutes.

Stir sweet peppers into mixture and roast 5-10 minutes more.

Remove from oven and place on serving platter. Drizzle with balsamic syrup and serve immediately.

Combine garlic, shallots, potato, pepper, parsley and basil, and set aside. Heat extra-virgin olive oil in 12-inch non-stick saute pan over high heat.

Add mushrooms and saute until they start to brown. Reduce heat to medium and add reserved vegetable mixture. Saute for about 1 1/2 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add additional olive oil, if needed, then add reserved egg mixture to hot saute pan.

Cook 2-3 minutes until egg cooks and sets on bottom. Transfer saute pan to broiler and broil until light and fluffy, and almost totally set, about 2-3 minutes. Sprinkle fontina cheese on top of frittata and place back under broiler until melted, about 2-3 minutes. Remove to cutting board and cut into six triangle servings. Place one serving in center of plate. Garnish each portion with four stalks of Lemon, Basil and Garlic Roasted Asparagus and two wedges of Roasted Tomato.

Sprinkle each portion with Parmesan.

Heat oven to 400 F. Heat medium sized saute pan on high.

Add olive oil and heat. Salt and pepper cod. Add cod to hot oil and sear very hard on one side, until fish is golden brown and crisp.

Transfer cod to baking sheet that has been brushed with olive oil. Place cod in oven until it starts to flake, about 12 minutes. Remove cod from oven and keep warm.

Using spoon, portion Olive Oil Melted Tomatoes onto four large dinner plates.

Allow some flavored oil to puddle on plate.

Carefully transfer cod on top of warm tomatoes.

Then top cod with Orange, Fennel and Olive Oil Salad. Squeeze lemon wedge over entire plate.

Olive Oil melted tomatoes 8 large roma tomatoes, peeled, seeded and cut in half salt and pepper, to taste 6 basil leaves, shredded 3 tablespoons parsley, chopped 1 lemon, zested 6 large garlic cloves, peeled and sliced thin extra-virgin olive oil Heat oven to 325 F. Place tomatoes in 9-inch cake pan and season to taste with salt and pepper. Scatter herbs, lemon zest and garlic on top of tomatoes.

Drizzle tomatoes with extra-virgin olive oil, which should come up about three-quarters of the way on tomatoes.

Cover with foil and bake until tomatoes are tender, approximately 40 minutes.

Orange, shaved Fennel and Olive Oil salad 1/2 large fennel bulb, sliced thin on mandolin 2 medium oranges, rind and seeds removed, cut into slices 1/2 medium lemon, juice only 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped salt and pepper, to taste Combine all ingredients and gently toss just before garnishing cod.

Martini’s, Meatballs & Membership Raises $21,000 For Sylvester

ebruary 1, 2016: The Greater Broward Chapter of The Pap Corps, held their Martini’s, Meatballs & Membership event on Friday, January 29, 2016 at Parkland Isles Clubhouse.

The event’s purpose was to renew memberships for their current members and introduce The Pap Corps. to residents residing in the Coral Springs/Parkland/ Coconut Creek area. The evening culminated with twenty new members joining the chapter as well as Not My Daughter, Find a Cure Now organization presenting a check for $20,000.

The Pap Corps is an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) Corporation with over 20,000 members and 53 chapters throughout Palm Beach, Broward and Miami Dade counties. It is the largest grassroots organization in the United States that is dedicated solely to funding research for ALL types of cancers. The mission of The Pap Corps is to raise money for ground-breaking cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, South Florida’s only university-based cancer center.

Not My Daughter is all about funding research to eradicate breast cancer before it reaches the next generation. Previous fundraisers have resulted in over $300,000 to many organizations including Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Society. For a second consecutive year, they selected The Greater Broward Chapter of The Pap Corps as one of their recipient charities. Many of the members are also members of The Greater Broward Chapter, thus creating a collaborative relationship.

Denyse Hostig, a Parkland resident and one of the inspirations behind Not My Daughter, Debi Weisman and Jodi Sternfield worked closely with our President, Lori Margolis, to establish this relationship.

As a result of NMD’s 2015 fundraiser, our chapter received a $20,000 donation.

Our chapter’s belief has always been to support the efforts of many organizations that are working together to fund cancer research rather than compete against one another. A direct result of our outreach has been a crossover of support and membership.

The Greater Broward Chapter consists of over 200 men and women in the Parkland/Coral Springs/ Coconut Creek area.

Players represented Coral Springs at Junior Team Tennis

A

group of junior tennis players representing the Tennis Center of Coral Springs/Cypress Park travelled to the Lighthouse Point Tennis Center on Saturday, January 30 to compete in a junior team tennis match.

Nine players ranging from ages 7-15 played singles and doubles sets against their opponents from 2-4pm. Players participating included Allyson Gates, Jocelyn Gomez, Leo Lorea, Tristan Dion, David Tang, Breah Campbell, Chana Bollompally, Amber Brocki and Lani Edwards.

Some of the Cypress Park include a playing component for their stand out performers were Jocelyn Gomez, who won students once a month whenever possible. These 2 singles and 1 doubles set. Lani Edwards won both include team matches against other clubs for the sets of singles, while Tristan Dion and Leo Lorea more advanced students, as well as play days on paired up to win their doubles, and followed it up with Saturdays for the newer students. The next event each winning a singles set. will be a Parent/Child tournament on Saturday, February 20.
