The Magazine That Cares

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Can’t wait for this summer’s heat wave to end. September is upon us and school starts for all. We have lots of great things happening with our 3 magazines, Coral Springs/Parkland, Coconut Creek/ Margate and Boca. We are pleased to announce that we have expanded our advertising coverage by working with OUR CITY Media. OUR CITY has 7 community magazines very similar to ours in many respects. They distribute 20,000+ magazines/ month in the following areas: Weston, Davie, Aventura, Plantation, Pembroke Pines, Miramar and Hollywood. Our 10 combined community magazines mail over 205,000 magazines mailed to homeowners and

local businesses. The most of any group of local magazines. This will allow all our advertisers to advertise from Aventura to Boca Raton. Let’s not forget our Second Annual Pet Costume Contest is now open for your favorite costumed pet pics. We will choose the best photos for Halloween. We will have prizes for the top 3 pets. We also wish to welcome APPLE Insurance to our media group. With their Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance and the best PET Insurance I have come across, they are gracing 2 of our 3 covers this month.

Lastly, regarding our upcoming charity events; all you golfers and those who wish to sponsor the Coral Springs Golf Tournament, held October 20, see their ad in our magazines and come on out to support the MLK Foundation. We are also giving away another 150 tickets to DISNEY ON ICE at the BBT Center for the weekend of September 13. All children charities are welcome to contact Lucy for tickets.

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

The Best Places to Raise a Family in Florida BY Derek Miller

Florida is a wonderful place to raise a family. The weather is almost always great and the cost of living is also relatively low, meaning parents won’t have to break the bank to live there. Plus, Florida has no state income tax. That means keeping more of every paycheck you earn. But what are the best places in Florida to raise a family? Read on as we rank the top 10 cities. Looking to move your family? Check out the current mortgage rates in Florida. In order to find the best places to raise a family in Florida, we looked at data on 65 cities across the state. We looked at metrics like family poverty rate, crime rate, child care costs, home value change, graduation rate, average deficit for families in poverty, median household income and median housing costs. Check out our data and methodology section below to see where we got our data and how we put it together.

Key Findings • Orlando metro area makes a strong showing – Two of our top 10 best places to raise a family in Florida are in the Orlando metro area. One suburb, Winter Garden, topped the entire list. • You pay for quality in Florida – The majority of our 10 best places to raise a family in Florida have high costs of living. But as our data shows, if you can manage the costs, these are great places to raise a family. • There are lots of youth – Despite the state’s reputation as the retirement capital of America, Florida also has plenty of young people. For example, in our top 10 cities, about 25% of the population are under the age of 20.

SEPTEMBER 2017

1. Winter Garden Winter Garden, a suburb 14 miles west of Orlando, is the best place in Florida to raise a family. This is a city full of young people. Over 28% of the population is under the age of 20, meaning making new friends shouldn’t be too much of a problem for children here. Winter Garden also has a strong local economy. The city has a low unemployment rate of 5.9% and only 7.3% of families fall under the poverty line. For both of those metrics Winter Garden ranks in the top 10. In fact, Winter Garden ranked pretty well in most metrics. The main concern for families here and families looking to move here, is the relatively high housing costs. Our data on housing costs shows that on average, Winter Garden residents pay about $1,215 per month. That is one of the higher figures in our top 10.

2. Wellington Wellington is a village just west of West Palm Beach and is, in fact, the most populous village in the state. This city was propelled up our rankings by high scores in economic metrics. For example, Wellington has the highest median household income in our study. The average household earns over $81,000 per year. Parents will also be happy to hear that Wellington has a solid high school graduate rate. It’s tied for second in the top 10 with a rate of 79.4%. Something to keep in mind for people looking to bring their families to Wellington are the high housing costs. According to the data we gathered, households here can expect to pay over $1,700 per month on housing, making it the least affordable city in our list.

buck. The schools in Plantation are good (the graduation rate is over 76%), few families are under the poverty line (7.7%) and the city has a low unemployment rate (6.6%). All factors which make for one of the best places to raise a family.

For many families, safety is a primary concern. If you live in Florida and are worried about crime, North Port is the place to lay down roots. According to our data, North Port has a property crime rate of 1,859 per 100,000 residents and a violent crime rate of 165 per 100,000 residents. For both those metrics North Port ranks in the top 10, making it one of the safest cities in Florida.

Living in Plantation also means worrying less about crime. According to our research, Plantation has a crime rate of about 4,000 crimes per 100,000 residents. Taking violent crime and property crime separately, we see that Plantation scores in the top 15 for both.

North Port is also relatively affordable for families. Our data reveals that North Port has the 16th-lowest median monthly housing costs of any city we analyzed. Education is another area where North Port shines. Our research shows that the area has a high school graduation rate of 79%, a figure which is higher than the state average.

Data and Methodology In order to find the best places to raise a family in Florida, SmartAsset analyzed data on 65 cities. Specifically, we looked at data on the following 11 factors:

Parents may be concerned about the high child care costs, however. Our data shows the market rate cost of keeping a toddler in a private center is $163 per week. That would mean paying just over $8,500 per year for a single child in care.

• Family poverty rate. This is the percent of families who fall under the poverty rate. Data comes from the Census Bureau’s 5-Year American Community Survey. • Average deficit for families in poverty. This is the average income deficit for families who fall under the poverty line. Data comes from the Census Bureau’s 5-Year American Community Survey.

3. (tie) Palm Beach Gardens Palm Beach Gardens is located north of West Palm Beach. The main reason to raise a family here is the economic benefits. This city has a low poverty rate. Only 4.2% of families are living under the poverty line. Plus, Palm Beach Gardens has the second-lowest unemployment rate in the study.

• High school graduation rate. Data comes from the Florida Department of Education. Data is measured at the county level and is for 2015. • Percent of population under 20 years old. Data comes from the Census Bureau’s 5-Year American Community Survey.

The city also has a top 10 high school graduation rate, showing that the majority of students in Palm Beach Gardens get a decent education.

5. Pembroke Pines Raising a family in Pembroke Pines will probably be pricey. According to our data, Pembroke Pines ranks in the top half most expensive for both median housing costs and weekly child care costs.

day care costs. Our data shows the weekly cost of keeping a toddler in a day care center amounts to only $143 per week, a top 20 rate.

8. Coral Springs

But there are reasons that parents are willing to pay a lot to live there. For one thing Pembroke Pines is one of the safest cities in the study. The city ranks in the top 15 in both of our crime metrics. For another, the unemployment rate is low, meaning finding work in the area hopefully won’t be too difficult.

Coral Springs, or the City of Coral Springs as it is officially known, takes our eighth spot for best places to raise a family in Florida. This is a fairly young city, chartered only in 1963, and has a fairly young population to match. Just under 29% of the population is under the age of 20. The City in the Country is also relatively crime-free. According to our research, Coral Springs has top 10 scores in both its property crime rate and violent crime rate.

6. Doral

9. Boca Raton

Doral is another great place in Florida to raise a family if you can afford it. This city has the highest median monthly housing costs in the study. However that is partly offset by the earning potential of households in the area. Our research shows that the average household in Doral earns just under $73,000 per year. That’s the second-highest median salary in the Florida.

Boca Raton took ninth place thanks to scoring in the top three in four metrics. Of these four metrics, Boca Raton’s most impressive score came in family poverty rate. Only one other city in Florida that we analyzed had a lower family poverty rate than Boca Raton. And it’s tough to beat Boca Raton for families looking for work. The city has the ninth-lowest unemployment rate in the country.

Doral is also a city full of young families. Over 31% of the population is under the age of 20.

Homeowners will also be pleased to learn that Boca Raton saw the third-highest increase in median home values from 2011 to 2015.

7. St. Cloud St. Cloud is a city 26 miles southeast of Orlando. This city has some of the best schools around. The high school graduation rate is above 80% – that’s the highest score in our top 10. Plus, St. Cloud is affordable when it comes to www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

10. Plantation At around $1,400 per month in average housing costs, Plantation is one of the least affordable places in our study. But families in the area get quite a bit of bang for their

• Median monthly housing costs. Data comes from the Census Bureau’s 5-Year American Community Survey. • Median household income. Data comes from the Census Bureau’s 5-Year American Community Survey. • Property crime rate. This is the number of property crimes per 100,000 residents. Data comes from the FBI and local authorities, and is from 2015. • Violent crime rate. This is the number of violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Data comes from the FBI and local authorities, and is from 2015. • Percent change in median home values from 2011 to 2015. This is the market rate average weekly cost of keeping a toddler in a private care center. Data comes from Floridaearlylearning.com and is measured at the county level.

After collecting the data, we ranked each city in each metric. We then found each city’s average ranking, giving equal weight to all metrics except property crime rate and violent crime rate which we gave a half weighting. Each city’s final score was based on its average ranking. The city with the best average ranking received a 100. The city with the worst average ranking received a 0.

FINANCIAL / TAX ADVICE RobeRt Spielman, Cpa, JD

Two Ways To Maximize Your Charitable Contributions

T

here is seemingly no end to the solicitations we receive from qualified charitable organizations seeking our assistance. Solicitations come by regular mail, e-mail, television commercials, and through word of mouth with respect to organizations we may participate in, such as religious, educational, or social organizations. Our collective support of these institutions serves a growing need for assistance to needy individuals throughout our country. While our collective generosity makes us all feel good, we also want to make certain we maximize our tax deduction, that also makes us feel good. There is a myriad of rules regarding deductibility of cash contributions to qualified organizations, along with percentage limitations as to how much can be deducted against adjusted gross income, depending upon the type of organization you donate to. This brief column will address two specific subjects that are generally important to South Florida residents. The two subjects are: 1. What deductions is one entitled to if you volunteer for an organization and provide personal services? 2. If you make contributions of cash or tangible property, what type of substantiation do you need to secure, retain, and file with your tax return? 1.

Deductions for Volunteers:

We all know we are not entitled to any tax deduction for the value of services we may perform for a charitable organization. Even such a valuable donation as a pint of blood, while noble, does not entitle you to a tax deduction. But volunteers to charitable organizations are permitted to deduct out-of-pocket costs incurred while performing their services, limited to the generally applicable rules and regulations for charitable contributions. Thus, if you perform services for a charity, and incur the following types of expenses, you will be entitled to a tax deduction: • Away from home travel expenses, including round trip travel, taxi, and transportation between airports, hotels and events, etc. • If you entertain others on behalf of the charity, for example, to secure a large contribution, you can deduct the cost of entertainment. The cost of your own entertainment or meal, is however, not deductible. • If you use your vehicle, while performing services for a charitable organization, you may deduct unreimbursed expenses directly attributable to such use. Alternatively, a flat $0.14 per mile for charitable use of your vehicle is available. • If you wear special uniforms when you do volunteer work and your uniform has no general utility, you can deduct the cost of acquiring and cleaning the uniform. • If you incur miscellaneous expenses such as printing, extensive telephone use, mailings, or any other similar expenditures on behalf of a charitable organization, you may be entitled to a tax deduction.

10

SEPTEMBER 2017

Charitable deductions for the above expenses must be substantiated by a written acknowledgement from the charity if the deduction exceeds $250. You should secure an acknowledgement indicating the amount expended, category of expenses, and confirming you received nothing of value in return for your contribution. If you are spending funds on behalf of a charity, it is important you secure written documentation from the charity about the nature of your efforts and the need for you to lay out funds for expenses. If you incur significant costs, it is recommended you submit the expenses, with receipts, to the charity for confirmation, even if they are not going to reimburse you. As always, maintain detailed records of all your expenses. If your volunteer efforts are ongoing and expenses considerable, consider arranging with the charity for them to directly pay all of the expenses you incur during your voluntary service and reimburse the charity with a tax deductible payment for these costs. This may simplify the documentation requirements. Great personal satisfaction flows from doing good deeds, but when you do good deeds and also secure a tax deduction, it can amplify your allocation of personal monies to charitable endeavors.

2. Substantiation for Charitable Donations: To support the tax benefits you seek, you are required to keep adequate records and secure substantiation for both cash and property donations. The following list is a brief guide to the rules and regulations. For more detailed information, see IRS Publication 1771, available on the IRS website. Recent cases have denied taxpayers charitable donations for failure to secure and file required documentation with their tax returns. The greater the dollar value of your donations, the more important it is to secure the appropriate documentation and complete the required IRS forms.

Cash Donations: Small cash donations are relatively simple. All you need to retain is a bank record supporting the donation, or a written receipt from the charity, indicating the charity’s name, date of donation, and the amount of the contribution. If your cash donation exceeds $250, you need to retain a copy of your canceled check and must secure a donor acknowledgement letter no later than the due date of the tax return. The written acknowledgement must state whether you received any goods or services in consideration of the donation. The $250 threshold is a per donation amount. Therefore, if you make several donations to the same charity throughout the year, but they total more than $250, you do not need to secure acknowledgement letters for your contributions.

Contributions of Property: Contributions of tangible property is an easy way to secure a charitable contribution deduction, so long as all rules and regulations are followed. The general rules are as follows: A.Property donations valued at less than $250 should be substantiated by a written receipt from the charity, showing the organizations name, the date and place of the contribution, along with a detailed description of the property. You should also retain records that indicate the property’s cost basis and fair market value on the date of contribution. B.Contributions in excess of $250 require more documentation. In this case, donors must receive a written acknowledgement from the charity following rules similar to above. If the charitable contribution exceeds $500, you must also complete Form 8283 and include it with your tax return. C.For property contributions of $5,000 or more, a qualified appraisal must be secured and Schedule B of Form 8283 (the Appraisal Summary) signed by the appraiser and the donee organization. The schedule and form must be attached to the tax return. Extensive rules apply to the completion of Form 8283 and the contents required to be included in the qualified appraisal. The appraisal must be done by a qualified appraiser in accordance with generally accepted appraisal standards. The appraiser must have verifiable education and experience in valuing the specific type of property which has been donated. D.If one is donating artwork or other high value property, strict adherence to IRS rules and regulations is imperative. E.If the property donation consists of publicly traded securities, an appraisal is not required if there are readily available market quotations for the securities. This brief column is intended to remind you there are tax benefits available to volunteers and for donations of cash and securities, as well as for personal property. In order to secure the deductions it is important you consult with your tax advisor to make certain you are meeting all the requirements needed to secure the deduction. Keep doing good deeds and supporting the organizations you trust with cash, securities, and personal property donations. But be sure you document your donations properly and file the necessary schedules and support with your annual personal tax return.

Coral Springs Mayor Skip Campbell continues to serve his community By Nicol JeNkiNs

T

he same motivation that made Skip Campbell decide to move to Coral Springs some 36 years ago also sparked his inspiration to become Mayor. It was his commitment to preserving the family friendly community with its great schools, parks and low crime. Since Skip Campbell took office in November 2014, his main focus has been to improve the City. “The reason I ran for Mayor was because I thought the direction of the City was not going in the way I thought it should go. I felt that I could bring some stability to the City,” said Skip. His vision has been successful in delivering fiscal responsibility, additional safety and more economic development. Some of the projects have included: two Fire Department houses, CSI building, Safety Town, and a new building for the Humane Unit. Many big businesses have moved to Coral Springs including: Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Cleveland Clinic and more companies. The City Commission is still working to develop the downtown development project to create a downtown for residents and visitors. The Mayor and Commission is also working closely with the Florida Panthers hockey league to bring youth hockey to Coral Springs, as there are many Olympians training in our City. The City of Coral Springs has been on the map for their accomplished athletes training for the Olympics at the Florida Panthers IceDen hockey facility and the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex. Many political figures have also visited the City including: Vice President Michael Pence, Hillary Clinton, and many others. Since taking office, the Mayor has worked tirelessly to bring stability to the City and make it a better place to live. “The City didn’t have a capital improvement reserve, and I felt strongly that the City should have fiscal responsibility and residents should understand how the money is being spent. We have put in $4.2 million dollars into a capital improvement reserve being that the City is over

50 years old, we need to fix and replace items to make Coral Springs a great City to live in,” explained the Mayor. Skip Campbell has spent many years in public service. He served in the Florida Senate from 1996 to 2006. During his 10 years in the Senate, he passed 112 bills benefitting the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and other worthy causes. He is also an accomplished trial attorney in Fort Lauderdale. He has been President of the local Bar Association, former President of the Federal Bar Association, a former law professor at Nova Southeastern University, an avid airplane and helicopter pilot, among many other accomplishments. He has also received many awards and recognitions including: the Distinguished Community Service Award of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation League of Coral Springs/Parkland, the Outstanding Senator Award of the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers and the Child Advocate of the Year Award in recognition of his commitment and service to children.

“I am dedicated 100 percent to the City of Coral Springs. I would like to see the City stay its course with providing a great quality of life for families and all age groups from children, teenagers, parents and seniors. We are a family friendly community, and we want to continue to provide a safe City through our Police Department, to maintain our beautiful parks and our fiscal responsibility,” said Skip. Mayor Skip Campbell continues to work hard to improve the City he loves and calls home. With him leading our City, residents can look forward to more positive growth and development in the future.

FAMILY MATTERS Dear Debbie and Karen,

I am a divorced dad with two daughters, ages 12 and 15. My girlfriend and I have been living together for two years, and we have decided to get married. We’re planning to “tie the knot” while away on vacation next month. I have not told the girls, because I am afraid how they will handle it. It’s not that they don’t like my fiancé, but they really want me to get back with their mom, which isn’t going to happen. My ex wife knows I am planning to tell them when we get back from vacation, after the wedding, but she is giving me grief about it. She and I get along fairly well now, and are great co-parents, but disagree about this. She says that the girls will be less upset if they know ahead of time. I don’t want to hurt them, but on the other hand, don’t want their negativity to interfere with our excitement and happiness. I do want to do the right thing, but I think I am right! Am I?

As Family Therapists we prefer to help you make sense of all the issues that are involved in the situation so you can make the “right” choice rather than telling you “what is right”. That being said, we understand your fear in avoiding anything that might interfere with your excitement and happiness about the wedding, however, perhaps you should consider the probable consequences to waiting. While it is not uncommon for children to secretly hope for their parents to get back together after a divorce, and while your marriage will end that dream, have you considered how your delay in telling them this news may affect their sense of trust with you and the ongoing relationship with your fiancé? Coming to terms with the finality of your divorce and the reality of you remarrying may not be easy, but there are ways to ease the transition. Our experience has been that the more children feel included in a parent’s second marriage, the more likely they are to accept it. Perhaps consider having a small celebration when you return, something that your daughters can participate in, maybe even help you plan. We see many families in our office that are struggling with challenges similar to yours. You said you want to do the right thing, so please consider the bigger picture in making your decision. If you find that you and your daughters are having trouble adjusting to your new marriage, we strongly recommend that you schedule a family session with them so that you can all move forward together in a more positive way.. Our best!

“Do nothing, say nothing and be nothing, and you’ll never be criticized.”

ven as 2017 begins, Rosemary Krieger of boca Raton is still in shock, she admits, from an event that took place in late 2016.

Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. (Photo by Dale King)

when a shaky, stunned and teary-eyed Rosemary reached the podium, she thanked the nearly 1,000 people in the audience at the 29thAnnual woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon & Fashion show at the boca Raton Resort & club. she had particularly kind words for her husband, ben, longtime partner in giving, and her three children who flew in from around the country: sons Kenneth, from New York and gregory, from Delaware, and daughter, catherine Krieger-Nelson, from Dallas. “I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.” many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few. Education and Arts Leadership

Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

the generous lady from boca has a simple philosophy about giving. “You don’t think about it, you just do it. I has to come from the heart.” coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. They finally escaped in 2013 when Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison. He committed suicide behind bars.

2. Give up putting yourself last Can you please, please, give up on putting yourself last? Can you please stop tolerating a world where you are the last on the list, every damn time?

BYLINE HERE BY TRacY, LIfE & LEadERsHIp coacH

It’s Time to Give Up “Somebody once told me the definition of hell. On your last day on earth, the person you became will meet the person you could have become.” I recently came across this quote, and it really made me think - when you are looking your mortality in the face, everything becomes so clear. If you crave more joy…more success… more fulfillment…the only thing standing in your way is YOU. If you are serious about making a change, living a more empowered life, I have a challenge for you. I invite you to abandon those things that are holding you back. Kick them to the curb. Leave them in the dust. If you’re in, let’s get started: 1. Give up making excuses. That’s right...your excuses, your justifications, and your rationalizations.

It’s time to abandon all the “reasons” for why you aren’t who you want to be, or how you can’t get to where you want to go, or you don’t have what you want to have. And yes, you’re probably a master at this. “The gym’s too far away.” “My kid’s schedule is too busy.” “I have no time.” “My husband travels.” These are stories that we create in our minds to keep us exactly where we currently are. Victimizing, disempowering stories...as if you don’t have a choice. So, let’s give up is this act of not taking responsibility for your own life. If you want something to change, YOU must change. From a place of radical personal responsibility, you understand that you are the obstacle and with that, you know you are also the answer!

This can be particularly challenging for moms who tell themselves “I’m a mother, so my kids come first.” With as much love as possible, that’s just an excuse. (And yes, I’m a mom of 3) So many people I meet insist on trying to please everyone else, making themselves the last thing on the totem pole. They make sure that everything and everyone in the universe has been tended to before they think about what they want or need. You know what I’m talking about…saying yes to everything, carrying the weight of the world, compromising yourself, letting it impact your self-worth… it’s all got to go! How long can you keep pouring your energy into doing everything for everyone else? Keep it up and before you know it you’ll be so drained, and so exhausted that you’ll end up making yourself ill, and filling yourself with all kinds of resentment.

I am begging you to reverse the belief that everyone else deserves to come first but you. And the irony of it all is that when you put everyone and everything else first, no one’s getting the best you. No one’s getting the happiest you. No one’s getting the true you, because you haven’t cared for and refueled yourself enough to have the energy to love and do and give to all the beautiful things that you have in your life. No silly, we’re not done giving things up! I have another 15 Invitations to a lighter, more joyful, fulfilled you! REAL ESTATE BY ANDI WITES

Keeping Your Home In “Showing Condition” Having your house on the market for sale creates a new lifestyle for the home’s occupants. You have chosen an agent, a price, made a few repairs and moved a lot of clutter. Now you want the phone to ring with “we have someone that wants to see your home.” Time for the fire drill! As much as you were looking forward to this moment, you have been on edge wondering whether to start cooking fish for dinner or stripping the linens for your weekly cleaning! You always had to juggle life, work, recreation and now “showing your home.” How do you integrate it all? It is very true that the easier it is to show a property, the more showings it will have. This is the time in your life that making the beds, putting the cap on the toothpaste and cleaning Fifi’s litter box regularly, will matter. It is best to be prepared daily. My sellers ask me all the time, “how much notice will I have for a showing?” My answer is, it

could be a day, a few hours or much less. Being prepared, albeit an effort every day, will be worthwhile. While most agents try to make their appointments the day before meeting with prospective purchasers, often it is just not possible. Perhaps they spend a morning with a customer and feel they have a better idea of what the buyers are looking for after those hours together. The agent may send them for lunch, go to his or her desk and begin to set some appointments for the afternoon, knowing better which properties will fit their wish list. This is just one very valid reason that a lot of advance notice cannot be given. Being prepared and allowing for easy access, can make the difference between your home being on top of, or the bottom of the list of homes to be shown. Yes, be ready, be flexible and make it easy for your home to be shown. But, should you be home when the buyers come? This is tricky. On one hand, many times, buyers and sellers will bond. Good vibes and good

karma may enhance the viability of the property. Buyers may like the house and also perceive that they will have an amicable relationship during the negotiations and transaction with the sellers. Or perhaps, the sellers’ intimate knowledge of the neighborhood will add value information beyond just viewing the features of the home. On the other hand. What if the agent and the buyers want to speak freely about different things while walking through the house? People are less likely to communicate with each other when the sellers are in earshot of their conversation. So, should you be home? But, well, maybe it’s raining, and you want to start dinner or your child is being dropped off after a playdate. What do you do? Here is what I suggest. If you are out, you are out, you have to live your life! You may be working, golfing or whatever. Therefore be sure to have an informative brochure, with lots of information about the house, for interested prospects to have as a takeaway. If it is not feasible for you to leave your home, make your presence known. Let the agent and their prospects know you are taking Fido for a walk down the block, doing some work in your office or reading a book on the patio. This way, you are approachable but not “in their face.” The biggest mistake a seller can

If prospects get that “warm fuzzy” and see that the property meets with their expectations, all the minor details will be looked into. If the house does not work for the buyer’s needs, it will not matter how many “dimmer switchers” you have! Selecting a Martial Arts School What you should know By RoBeRto Baptista *

I

n the past decades I have been frequently asked what you should be looking for when selecting a martial arts school.

My first advice has always been that the first and main concern must be the quality of instruction. Quality of instruction can be checked by answering the following questions: • Who are the Instructors? Are they certified instructors of the Martial Arts style they teach? How many years of experience do they have? • What is the source of the martial arts knowledge that is been offered? • Are they affiliated members of an official, recognized national entity of that martial arts style? Every student has the right to know where the knowledge of that school is coming from. Beware of sole inheritors of “secret” martial arts systems nobody ever heard about. If this is the case you are most likely talking to a phony. In a traditional school of martial arts lineages and pictures of previous masters are often proudly presented. In China, Japan, Korea and other eastern countries, authentic martial arts lineages are strongly valued and respected. So, don’t forget: Your top concern must be the quality of instruction, unless you are willing to potentially waste your time and money. In most cases paying a little more and driving a little farther can be worth it to get better instruction. The second thing to keep in mind is yours on expectations. What do you expect to get from your martial arts practice? Can the school and teacher you’re considering supply that? In old China tradition all martial arts were always practiced for four basic reasons, in the following order of importance:

1. 2. 3. 4.

To forge character with strong values; To acquire good and sound health; For leisure; and For self-defense.

Notice that to develop the ability to hurt someone is not a traditional reason for learning martial arts. In most traditional styles the respect for life is an important value to be honored by its practitioners. Most authentic, traditional Martial Arts styles incorporate a value system, which goes beyond mere fighting techniques. A traditional martial artist will not believe in violence, but rather will value the path of peace. Make sure you are getting what you are paying for. Are you paying for martial arts instruction and only getting sit-ups, push-ups and jumping jacks? Yes, physical conditioning is an important part of martial arts training, but in most cases is naturally achieved through the traditional martial arts conditioning exercises. Next, check the school’s facility. Martial arts schools come in all sizes. More important than sizes is to make sure it’s well equipped to teach the martial art style it offers. Remember that a clean school is always a sign of pride and respect. Among the many options around you, choose the style that will help you achieve what you’re expecting to get from your Martial Arts training. All traditional martial arts, when properly taught by a true master, can be very rewarding. Their origins date back thousands of years and their techniques have passed the tests of time, in both times of peace and times of war. Pay attention to the school spirit. True martial arts instructors will instill good desirable values in their students. They are respectful and respected by them. They are caring individuals, who honestly want to help their students achieve their full potential in all aspects of life. The school spirit must be inspiring of discipline and respect. An authentic teacher will have a deep understanding of their art, beyond performing nice moves. A true master

will help the student achieve a true understanding of what each technique represents. Pay attention to the teaching format. Students must be encouraged to progress at their own pace. A true master will devote to each student the adequate attention to ensure good progress. The understanding of student’s gifts and limitations will also be a constant concern. In regard of the price of instruction in the US, some school have contracts others not, but in the end the average price varies between 15 and 20 dollars per class, depending on the location the school is established. But beware that inexpensive martial arts instruction may become very costly in the long run. I know, it sounds like a lot of work just to find a place learn martial arts. But, if you are planning to invest you money and time in martial arts classes over the next few years, you want to be sure that you are getting the best in return. If you pay attention to these items I have presented here you will find that your choices are quickly narrowed. Before long, you will be studying martial arts at a school that is right for you. If there are traditional teachers near your area, great! But if not, it is worth to drive a few extra miles to get it. In east there is an old saying used by many masters that states: When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. * Roberto Baptista is the Program Director of KungFu Connection, a traditional Shaolin KungFu and TaiChi school located at 7830 Wiles Rd in Coral Springs, FL.

Actions speak louder than words: we committed long term to Boca’s Best because we like Jerry, but most importantly because we are extremely happy with what the magazine has done for our business! vacation for the family is no small expense, but there are plenty of ways you can minimize the hit your wallet takes and focus instead on exploring new places while making great memories.

Travel during off seasons. Although peak season varies by destination and region, virtually every location has an off season when demand is lighter and so are prices, for everything from hotel rooms to entertainment. The one downside is that while off season travel can be great for a strict budget, lower tourist trafficmeans many attractions and amenities may offer reduced schedules or even close. An alternative is traveling during what’s known as the shoulder season, the transitional timeframe between peak and off-peak seasons, when it’s easier to findthe best of both worlds: lower prices and plenty of things to see and do. Pack your snacks. Particularly if you’re traveling with small children, there’s no way to avoid frequent stops for restroom breaks and burning off some energy. Outfittin the whole family with a drink and snack at every stop can quickly add up. Instead, carry a supply of treats and drinks in a cooler, if there’s room, so you can refresh and recharge but skip the added expenses. Shop smart for gas. Just as you’ve likely noticed in your hometown, gas prices can fluctuatefrom one area to the next. When it’s time to fillup, avoid densely populated tourist areas where prices tend to be higher. There are also several smartphone apps that can help identify the best prices in your immediate vicinity. Leverage rewards programs. Whether it’s a retail shopping card or an incentive program on your credit line, take maximum advantage of your available rewards to help defray travel costs. Cash in points to earn credit on essentials like gas, hotel costs and more, depending on your program offerings.

Practice fuel-efficientdriving. If weather allows, use the vents or windows to cool down rather than the air conditioner. Make sure tires are properly inflated.Try to limit abrupt changes in speed with hard accelerations and braking, and use cruise control when trafficconditions allow.

family road trip can bring on a strong sense of nostalgia. Although much has likely changed since you embarked on your first journey as a child, there are still plenty of ways to appreciate road tripping with the family and bring the best of “then” to “now.”

Seating selection. A generation ago, road trips meant putting down the seats in the station wagon and creating a giant play space in the rear of the car. Keep the same spirit in your road trips now by attaching a travel kit in an accessible bag or organizer to the front seat backs to hold plenty of diversions. Electronic-free entertainment. Handheld devices and headphones may be the norm for this generation, but there’s no time like a family road trip to put down the electronics. Old-school games like I Spy, Make the Trucker Honk and The Alphabet Game add some free, fun entertainment that encourages a look out the window at the passing surroundings.

and avoid mechanical failures along the way, most mechanics will offer the same tip: change the oil. If you haven’t already, consider making the switch to a synthetic motor oil such as Kendall GT-1 Max to help your engine achieve maximum performance and extend the time between oil changes to give you more time on the open road. An AAA engine oil research study confirmed synthetic motor oil performs better than conventional motor oil by nearly 50 percent. Also remember to check your vehicle’s fluids, battery, wipers, tire tread and air pressure to ensure road-trip readiness. Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the recommended maintenance information according to the manufacturer. Gas prices. When the Griswold family hit the road on their infamous trek to Walley World 34 years ago, gas rang up at $1.16 a gallon. Today the national average for a gallon of gas is $2.49. While yesterday’s gas prices will likely never return, a road trip is still an economical choice for families. Consider a one-tank destination over a cross-county trek to help deliver a memorable experience with your family.

From Summer to Fall in Parkland Happy September! It is so hard to believe the summer is already over and the kids are back in school. I hope everyone’s school year has gotten off to a great start! This summer, I was fortunate enough to travel to my first home city—Boston, Massachusetts. I showed my kids the junior high/high school I attended—Boston Latin School, which is the oldest public school in the country whose graduates include American greats like John Hancock, Charles Bullfinch, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Payne, Samuel Adams, and Leonard Bernstein. Throughout the years I have carried some of the key Mayor Hunschofsky principles we were taught at Boston Latin with me - the importance of learning, questioning, and being good citizens. So much of what we learned, whether in history or in Latin class, was about using our talents to be good citizens. After all, we had a legacy to uphold. One thing that has not changed in Boston is the neighborhood feel of the city. Much of that has to do with the commitment of the elected public servants to keep that feeling alive. Former Mayor Thomas Menino was always at various community events throughout the city—whether it was an egg hunt in Roslindale Square or giving out gifts Christmas Eve in Dorchester. Current Mayor Marty Walsh is also always out in community talking to residents. And, to quote former Mayor Ray Walsh, “walking the streets of the city and talking to many people doesn’t make me smarter than anybody else—but I think it makes me someone who knows what’s going on.” Since joining the Parkland Commission, I’ve made it my priority to be out in the community and talking to residents – listening to concerns and seeing first-hand the things that are going on. In addition to seeing Parkland residents out in the community at our many city events, sports fields, and activities, I encourage residents to meet with me, oneon-one or in small groups at City Hall. This month I will have open office hours on Tuesday, September 19, from 8am-10am - no appointment necessary, just walk in with your questions, thoughts, concerns, or just to say hello. The best way for me to serve the community is to know what issues you care about. If that date does not work for you, please call 954-753-5040 to make an appointment. If you can’t make it to City Hall to talk, I always welcome e-mails and phone calls from our residents. Every month I end this column by asking for your feedback and providing my e-mail address to make it easy for you. This month is no exception. I hope to hear from you at chunshofsky@cityofparkland.org. Have a great September! If you would like to meet with me to discuss any City issues, feel free to visit during my office hours. I hold office hours the second Tuesday of every month from 4 to 6 p.m. at City Hall in the City Commission Office. To make an appointment, please call 954-344-5911. Broward Health North new ER enhances patient experience By Nicol JeNkiNs

W

alking through the doors, one might be surprised by the serene atmosphere. Picturesque murals on the walls, private spacious rooms, a calming café and lush landscaping are typically not found in an emergency room setting.

The Previous ER simply “did not have the space for the number of patients,” according to Robert Bugg, Interim CEO of Broward Health North. Over the past 20 years, the admissions were increasing at an average rate of 1 percent per year.

But all of this and more can be found at the newly renovated ER at Broward Health North. Instead of feeling thoughts of anxiety, the new improvements at Broward Health North provide a better experience for patients, their families and staff.

“Crowding was the underlying concern in the prior structure, the set-up also sometimes hampered the flow of care, because the ER was constructed more like a silo and is now more of an open floor plan,” explained Evan Boyar, Medical Director of the ER.

The new ER, which opened in December 2016 with a $78 million expansion, has more than doubled in size with 36,000 square feet and 53 beds, staff including 3 dedicated trauma and state-of-the-art equipment. Compared to the previous 32 rooms with only 17,434 square feet. The expansion also includes: private rooms with a built-in bench where family members can sit; a TV in each room; photographs and murals in each of the rooms, which is aesthetically pleasing, and sliding glass doors, that can be closed if the patient is seeking privacy. Rooms are universal with a number of capabilities, meaning patients can be treated with a variety of technologies in any of the rooms. There is also a dedicated pediatrics area, which is set away from the rest of the emergency department; in addition to three dedicated trauma bays in the Level 2 trauma center. They have added more nurses and emergency personnel, a dedicated volunteer named Arthur, a social worker, a new gift shop and even a Tai Chi room for employees.

To better accommodate an increase in patients, the hospital decided to expand its services. With the new 36,000 square feet, staff was added, including medical personnel and paramedics, along with cleaning staff, transport and respiratory staff. The state-of-the-art facility has equipment to handle any ailment from acute heart attacks, trauma and stroke. Not only has the new department improved patient experience, but it has also increased the number of admissions that can be handled. With the current configuration, BHN is at about 64,000 visits per year. Anything above 60,000 falls into a high-capacity emergency room, according to national guidelines, and they have the availability of going up to about 75,000 visits with this new configuration.

The tradition of going into an ER department is a chaotic place with patients everywhere and people yelling in the hallways. Here, they can come into a tranquil and serene environment where patients and family members have an intimate consultation with staff

in a private room. It’s a smooth environment to work in, and better employee satisfaction creates better patient satisfaction and it becomes a snowball effect. Broward Health North has received many accolades including being City News Reader’s Choice for Best ER. The plaque currently hangs on the wall in the ER. “A better patient experience was the driving force behind BHN’s new Emergency Room. And a better experience is definitely what the patients are getting. In fact, we were just recognized by Medicare and Medicaid as having the Highest Patient Experience scores in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties. A better working experience/environment for our employees and physicians has translated to happier patients,” added Bugg. Lea Ann Chidester, ER Assistant Nurse Manager, says patients have praised the renovations: “The care and the new center on Sample Road could not be better. It is state-of-the-art and everything is first class. The nurses and doctors are exceptional, fast and courteous.” “The patient feedback shows the positive results. The care is great and the atmosphere is beautiful. Patients who come here frequently love the new ER,” said Chidester. Broward Health North is located at 201 E Sample Road, Deerfield Beach, FL 33064. BCPS Awarded $227,000 Grant to Increase Robotics Instruction and Resources in Schools Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is honored to be selected for a grant by the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation and NASA, which will provide robotics equipment, materials and teacher professional development for all District schools. The grant, valued at approximately $227,000, will be implemented over the next four years. During the 2017/18 school year – the first year of the grant – the new robotic equipment and resources will enhance STEM+Computer Science (STEM+C) opportunities currently offered at 57 schools across the District, including 36 elementary schools, 12 middle schools and nine high schools. Additional schools will be added each year of the grant. The focus is on aligning robotics instruction among feeder schools within the District’s Innovation Zones, to provide seamless opportunities for students to build upon their skills as they transition from elementary school to middle and high schools. Early introduction to STEM+C, including robotics, is the foundation of the District’s ongoing #BrowardCODES initiative, which is dedicated to building a strong computer science community within BCPS. Computer science courses, curriculum and activities are now offered in 100 percent of District schools, thanks to support from partners such as Code.org, the National Science Foundation, Google and the Broward Education Foundation. In 2016, the White House also recognized BCPS for its commitment to increasing computer science in schools. “We are incredibly excited to be chosen by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation and NASA for this grant,” said Dr. Lisa Milenkovic, STEM+C supervisor with the District’s Applied Learning Department. “The funding supports our efforts to expand opportunities for students to experience and learn about computer science, and understand how the skills they are learning can be utilized in many different career paths.” To learn more about the REC Foundation and NASA grant, contact Dr. Lisa Milenkovic, BCPS Applied Learning Department, at 754-321-1851. Additional information on the #BrowardCODES initiative is available at browardschools.com/browardcodes. ###

All Booked Up Book Discussion Group Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy by Sheryl Sandberg & Adam Grant Saturday, September 9th, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. After the unexpected passing of her beloved husband Dave Goldberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and bestselling author of Lean In, feared that she and her young children would never find joy again. Fortunately, this fear was unfounded. This book – co-authored with psychologist and friend Adam Grant – shows how Sandberg and many others who have overcome a wide range of profound hardships triumph over tragedy. The book posits that it’s helpful to think of resilience like a muscle, one that atrophies in the calm between the storms of our lives. But there are things we can do to develop it, so we’re better prepared when adversity strikes. of Kansas. She worked as a designer and buyer for a fabric company in Tulsa, OK until 2000 when I met met husband who lived in Florida. She lives in Parkland with husband and two daughters. Kelly Merkur started painting about 2 years ago and enjoys creating two different types of work. She paints simple, yet realistic portraits of people and animals. This work gives her an opportunity to focus on the analytical and detail oriented side of her personality. When painting a portrait of a person or an animal she tries to capture their spirit without taking the process or the idea of the end result too seriously. Kelly also enjoys painting abstract work which speaks to her creative side. Beginning with a colorful foundation and deliberate bold marks, creating a groundwork of excess and texture. Continually editing with a neutral palette, layer after layer until the final result is minimalistic. The result is subtle areas of bold vibrant color and interest. Her work will be on display at the Parkland Library September 1st through 30th. Writing Buddies (K-5th grade), Saturday, September 9th, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Teens will be paired up with young budding authors to guide them through the story creation process. Coral Springs Regional Chamber Of Commerce And Coconut Creek Chamber Of Commerce Join Efforts To Impact Economic Growth In Northwest Broward. Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce announces the integration of the Coconut Chamber of Commerce to help strengthen the voice of the business community and improve economic, civic and community growth across Northwest Broward. CORAL SPRINGS, FL – AUGUST 24, 2017 – The Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce announces today the integration of the Coconut Chamber of Commerce to help strengthen the voice of the business community by connecting resources and influencing economic, civic and community growth across Northwest Broward. The Coconut Creek Chamber of Commerce will be known as the Coconut Creek Chamber Council, operating under the auspices of the Coral Springs Regional Chamber, a 500+ member organization representing an array of retail, commercial, health, nonprofit, educational, and other private/public sectors across Broward County. “We are excited about further expanding our reach and creating more opportunities for our members to proactively connect and grow, while gaining greater influence as the ‘voice’ of the Northwest Broward area,” said Cindy Brief, CEO of Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce. “By integrating the Coconut Creek Chamber, we further our mission of serving as the catalyst for economic growth for all members in the Northwest Broward region.” Centrally located in the heart of Northwest Broward, Coconut Creek is one of the most dynamic business regions surrounded by six cities, including Coral Springs, Parkland, Margate, Pompano, Deerfield Beach, and Boca Raton. Conversations began in October 2016, as each organization explored how to best serve its membership. “We chose the Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce because they go above and beyond the typical chamber. We love the way they operate. They are extremely professional and friendly, and we knew they would have the best interest of Coconut Creek at heart,” said Connie Carberg, President of the Coconut Creek Chamber of Commerce. “We look forward to a prosperous future for our members and a symbiotic relationship between the two cities.” The integration agreement between the two Chambers involves: Coral Springs Regional

Chamber of Commerce managing the administrative, financial and membership needs of the Coconut Creek members. The Coconut Creek Chamber Council will have its own Board of Governors and representation on the Coral Springs Regional Chamber’s Board of Directors. Their programs, events and committees will continue as usual. “From an industry perspective, regionalization is becoming the norm. Chambers of Commerce and other non-profit organizations are constantly competing for funding while working to raise money to keep the organization viable and growing,” said Mark Watson, Chairman of the Board for the Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Both board of directors view the alliance as the perfect opportunity to build a strong sustainable organization for all members and to create a bright future for Northwest Broward.”

Fitness Age A wealth of recent research suggests that any type of exercise that raises your heart rate and gets you moving and sweating for a sustained period of time, i.e. aerobic exercise, has a overwhelmingly significant beneficial impact on the brain. While some of the benefits — like a lift in mood — can emerge as soon as a few minutes into a sweaty bike ride, others — like improved memory — might take several weeks to crop up. That means that the best type of fitness for your mind is any aerobic exercise that you can do regularly and consistently for at least 30 minutes at a time.

If you would like more information about the integration, please contact Gulie Carrington at 954-752-4242 ext. 203 or email at gulie@ cschamber.com.

In a small study of near 300 breast cancer survivors to assess the benefits of aerobic workouts on the brain, researchers wanted to see if activities like walking and swimming could have any effect on “chemo brain,” a commonly-reported side effect of breast cancer treatment that involves memory loss and difficulties focusing. Since previous research had suggested that regular workouts could help protect against agerelated cognitive decline, the researchers wanted to find out if those results would hold true for cancer survivors too. At the end of a week, people who’d done aerobic exercise every day were not only significantly less tired than those who did little to no exercise, but also did significantly better on a specially-designed iPad app with quizzes designed to measure their attention and memory.

Established in 1997, the Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce is the catalyst for economic growth for its members and community in Northwest Broward. Our primary objective is to create a climate of growth and success in which all businesses in Coral Springs and surrounding areas can prosper regardless of size or industry. Through our advocacy efforts, the Chamber represents the voice of business in the Northwest Broward region with leadership opportunities and business building initiatives that focus on the critical priorities of business in our local area. By leveraging the support, talent, and resources of our members, the Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce connects business leaders to each other and helps to improve the economic vitality of life for everyone. For more information, visit our website at http://www.cschamber. com.

A pilot study in people with severe depression found that just 30 minutes of treadmill walking for 10 consecutive days was “sufficient to produce a clinically relevant and statistically significant reduction in depression.” Aerobic workouts can also help people who aren’t suffering from clinical depression feel less stressed by helping to reduce levels of the body’s natural stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, according to a recent study in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science. For those over 50, a study in the British Medical Journal suggests the best results come from combining aerobic and resistance exercise, which could include anything from highintensity interval training (alternating heart rate by varying exercise intensity) to strength-building poses like planks and push-ups. Another study finding that in adults aged 60-88, walking for 30 minutes

The Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce is a highly-respected and vibrant organization. “This is a mutually beneficial arrangement for members of both organizations, increasing exposure to new markets, expanding networking opportunities, and building a strong partnership across our cities,” concluded Brief.

four days a week for 12 weeks appeared to strengthen connectivity in a region of the brain where weakened connections have been linked with memory loss. Researchers still aren’t sure why exercise appears to provide a boost to the brain, but studies suggest it has to do with increased blood flow, which provides our minds with fresh energy and oxygen. And one recent study in older women who displayed potential symptoms of dementia found that aerobic exercise was linked with an increase in the size of the hippocampus, a brain area involved in learning and memory. In my previous article, I have also cited study on elderly participating in Senior Olympics - by engaging in physical activities, especially by challenging their brain with new skill sets such as learning long jump in their 80s (it is not as easy as you though, at any age), the senior Olympians were able to increase the connectivity of their brain (validated by before and after MRI brain scans of thickening white matter) which is more than enough to compensate for the natural degradation and even some earlier minor disease damages of their brain function. Bottom line is anyone in good health should do 30 minutes to an hour of aerobic exercise on as many days of the week as feasible especially if you are over 40. For those that cannot exercise due to physical limitation, simply walking in a pool with proper precaution and a steady safety floating device should do. For those who want a valid assessment of their physical fitness based on the extensive research by the K. G. Jebsen Center of Exercise in Medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, you can estimate your “fitness age” by answering a few questions in their research website www.worldfitnesslevel.org As always, please have a thorough discussion with your physician before you engage in a new exercise regiment. Cindy Brief Leading Cs Chamber To New Heights By Dale King Cindy Brief has been the voice, face and driving force of the Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce for more than a decade. As president and CEO of the business advocacy body since 2006, she has led the Chamber to new heights. A Staten Island native, Brief serves on the board of the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals (FACP). She is also chair-elect of the Broward Council of Chambers and is on the Board of Tomorrow’s Rainbow, a grassroots nonprofit organization providing emotional support to children grieving the death of a parent or loved one. In addition, she is a member of the board of directors of the Economic Development Office for the city of Coral Springs.

One of the most significant alterations to impact the region’s business community has already begun to take place. The boards of directors for the Coral Springs and Coconut Creek chambers have agreed to integrate both into one organization. What does this mean? “Members of both will now be getting two Chamber memberships for the price of one -with even more member benefits,” she said. “There will be additional opportunities to grow and develop your network of business professionals, and both organizations will be able to participate in more events.” “The integration expands the reach of both organizations by giving all of us a greater influence as the ‘voice of business in the northwest Broward area.’” The Coconut Creek Chamber will be known as the Coconut Creek Chamber Council, she noted. “It will have its own board of governors as well as representation on the Coral Springs Regional Chamber’s board of directors. The Coconut Creek Council will continue to have its own identity and will provide member-driven programs that are successful and foster engagement in the Coconut Creek community.” Discussion of the planned integration began about a year ago, she said. “We talked about how best to serve the membership from an industry perspective. For both boards, it will be a great alliance for the future.” Brief was employed earlier in her life as a certified public accountant following her graduation from City University of New York-Brooklyn College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. With little interest in continuing in that field, she moved to

“We conduct a lot of events,” she said. “We do a grand gala, we have a state-of-the-chamber meeting. We just had our legislative update breakfast.” She attended “Capitol Days” in Tallahassee and will be part of the Washington “Fly-up” to D.C. with the Fort Lauderdale Chamber, led by U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, the local Democratic congressman. The trip is planned the final week in September. Within the Chamber itself, Brief has created a “Chamber University,” a business academy consisting of a six-month series of speakers addressing issues such as retaining employees and helping personal and professional developments. A panel of CEO’s will address the group about real-life use of negotiating skills.

South Florida in 1989 seeking part time work while she raised her two children, Johnny, now 30, and Josh, 26. “When my youngest son was in kindergarten, I went to the [Coral Springs] Chamber of Commerce office which, at the time, was on Sample Road in a storefront. I knew the executive director; we had taken a tax review class together.” “I told her I was looking for part time work and she said, ‘Do you want to work here?’” At the time, the Chamber was closed down, so Brief met someone who organized trade shows. “I got into the trade show business and opened my own company,” she said. At the time, she did a trade show for the local Chamber and was asked to stay on and conduct sales. She spent three years in that endeavor before moving up to president. In the executive position, Brief travels a lot on behalf of member businesses and works with other organizations and nearby Chambers. She noted that Troy McLellan, president and CEO of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, recommended her for the FACP position.

She has also helped create a NEXTgen organization, a group of under-40 business people who meet and exchange ideas. A recent NEXTgen session drew 40 to 50 speakers, which she called “a good response.” JM Lexus, a major area corporation, has signed on as a sponsor. Brief noted that Vice-Mayor and City Commissioner Dan Daley, who is 27, helped set up NEXTgen for younger Chamber members. The local president/CEO said the organization is also working with the city on the new downtown proposed at the intersection of University Drive and Sample Road. Not only does the Chamber support the new City Hall under construction on Sample Road, but also plans to relocate its offices there. With Brief in the lead, the Chamber created a Professional Women’s Alliance (PWA), which brings female professionals together at bimonthly luncheons to hear educational and inspirational speakers. Also, the Chamber has a Local Affairs Committee committed to advocating for Chamber members with the city, county and state. A resident of Coconut Creek, Brief has also lived in Parkland and Coral Springs. Mark Ridings is her fiancé.

Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye

BY MINDI RUDAN We’ve all seen them; on the beach, bulging behind summer shorts or marring the look of an otherwise great “gam” or worse---on our own legs in the mirror: Varicose or spider veins. Defined basically as veins that have become enlarged and twisted, the “bulge,” appears when valves or the pair of “leaflet valves” veins have no longer meet properly, and simply put, the valves just don’t work anymore. (Valvular incompetence.) This causes blood being pumped from your heart-- that the oft taken for granted, hard-working veins carry to and fro-- to back up, if you will, creating the unsightly bulge we know as varicose veins. Most common in the superficial veins in the legs, which are subjected to high pressure from standing, too much sitting, inactivity or the dastardly leg crossing, these veins can actually be found anywhere on the body, even the face. While most people seek remedy for the cosmetic aesthetics, there’s much more reason to check them out—especially as we age. And while there are countless vein clinics, or even medical “spas” that offer to treat the malady, few bear the pedigree of board certified, world-renown cardiologist Ariel Soffer, founder of Soffer Health Institute, now with SIX locations. His professional credits could fill a page alone, but his personal passion for this field and his journey towards it--is much deeper. This IS the doctor who for FOUR years had an ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.”The same doctor medical companies still call to test and give input on new methodology, new tools, techniques and breakthroughs. This IS the doctor who gives a seminar in New Orleans every year for 3-500 other highly skilled physicians who travel from all over the country to learn from him. HIS techniques, his innate diagnostic ability and gain his insight into this specialty. He’s that talented, and that committed. And lucky for us, his SoFla locations are graced by him –and a hand-picked and trained staff every day. His website heralds almost rock star adoration from legions of patients, some whose lives have potentially been saved, and countless others he’s made more livable and enjoyable because of his “vein whisperer-ish” knowledge, talent and years of focused experience. “He’s clearly the top of this pyramid,” offered Adam

Kustin, company spokesperson and someone who’s clearly enamored of Dr. Soffer’s skill and humility after seeing what he does every day. “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice.” And call me crazy, but when you are talking about your vascular health, your overall well-being and your potential to enjoy living life, going to a “medical spa” to be treated for veins that work in tandem with your heart daily—SHOULDN’T be a crap-shoot. “You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” And Dr. Soffer’s ability makes sure patients don’t walk out just cosmetically beautiful, but walk out KNOWING there isn’t a serious hidden health issue that could be life threatening just down the road. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” And fixing the issue is relatively simple. “And pain-free,” he added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” When asked why this doctor has made vein health his focus

when he clearly is still regarded as one of America’s top cardiologists, the answer brought staggering clarity and a character trait we all want in our doctors. “It was emotional for Dr. Soffer. He wanted to stop fixing the sometimes near unfixable issues in cardiology. Instead he wants to help people prevent these lifethreatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life …and he gets an immediate hug,” half-joked Kustin. “He SEES people pain free, enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” With six offices locally, Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach, Hialeah/Miami Lakes, Dr. Soffer is accessible. His staff is multi-lingual, welcoming and most importantly willing to help people start the process. FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CALL

954.246.4555 Soffer Health Institute began in Aventura and now there are several locations, including one in Deerfield Beach at 1877 W. Hillsboro Blvd. They plan to open a Weston location next. Members of the staff speaks Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

The “clean eating” lifestyle has grown in popularity, and now it’s making its way to pet food. In a survey of dog owners, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Mars Petcare, 9 out of 10 respondents said they try to incorporate clean foods into their diets at least some of the time, and 75 percent said their own eating habits have caused them to reflect on the quality of food they feed their dogs.*

Terry Walters, best-selling author and dog owner, believes that clean eating – for both humans and pets – is about being mindful of what you eat and what you choose not to eat, as well as being more aware of the origin of the food in your diet. “I tell my kids that if you can picture how food grows, your body is more likely to know what to do with it,” Walters said. “That, to me, is the basis of clean eating – choosing foods as close to their natural form as you can find. The NUTRO™ brand has joined this clean eating movement with its NUTRO. FEED CLEAN™ philosophy, which allows you to share your clean eating lifestyle and values with your dog.” These are some of Walters’s favorite tips for both humans and pets to eat clean: •

Become more conscious of what you put into your body and how it affects your overall well-being. Keeping a food journal where you record what you eat, when you eat it and how it makes you feel is one way to recognize which foods are serving you and which are not.

Empower your family to make healthy choices by educating them about different foods and the nutrition they provide, and including them in everything from growing to cooking clean food. The more you know about your food, the healthier choices you can make and the more able you will be to achieve sustainable, good health.

Our four-legged family members deserve the best, too. Make eating clean a priority for the whole family, including pets. NUTRO. FEED CLEAN™ dry dog food recipes, made with non-GMO† ingredients, align perfectly with clean eating values and give dogs a nutritious diet that’s tuned exactly to their needs.

The NUTRO. FEED CLEAN™ philosophy promises pet owners a dry dog food with recipes that are simple, purposeful, trustworthy and made with real, recognizable, non-GMO† ingredients as close to their native form as possible.

Acupuncture for Infertility

M

any couples struggling to conceive know the heartache of infertility and many people are open to trying anything to help them conceive. The good news is that Acupuncture can help! Acupuncture when used in conjunction with Western treatments will increase conception by 26%. Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and still around today because IT WORKS! Infertility plagues approximately 7.3 million woman of childbearing age each year. Acupuncture involves the insertion of painless, very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions. Acupuncture is similar to physical therapy in that is a process oriented method of medical intervention. Patients are commonly treated three to four months before progressing to insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF) or donor egg. Most miscarriages occur within the first three months of pregnancy, consequently patients should continue with treatments up to week twelve. According to John Norian, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist at HRC Fertility in Southern California, “Acupuncture improves fertility by helping blood flow to the uterus and ovaries and the better the blood flow the more likely an embryo is to implant.” Acupuncture can treat many different causes of infertility, including but not limited to thyroid problems (overactive or underactive), PCOS and idiopathic reasons (unknown cause). Patients use Acupuncture as their main treatment for their infertility problems while others use it in conjunction. Acupuncture increases the feel-good hormones called beta endorphins which improves the levels of folliclestimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, which are both very important for fertility and decreases the body’s stress response. Acupuncture treatment reduces stress, increases flow to the reproductive organs and balances the endocrine system, according to several researches. Acupuncture increases flow to the ovaries and uterus, creating a stronger chance for an egg to be nourished and carried to term.

Research has also shown that Acupuncture can increase male fertility, which is 30% of the time the cause of couples not being able to conceive. A study published in 2005 in Fertility and Sterility showed Acupuncture can help treat male infertility by increasing the number of normal sperm and decreasing the number of defective sperm. The goal of an infertility treatment from the Chinese medicine perspective is not just getting pregnant, but to stay pregnant and conceive a healthy baby. Reducing stress in also a key factor in infertility treatments because when men or women are under stress, the hormone cortisol is released in their brain. The change in the brain’s neurochemical balance changes the hormone levels and disrupts the pituitary balance, which is very important to the reproductive cycle. It is very important to see a licensed, fully trained Acupuncture physician for the highest chances of success. Make sure not to use anyone that says they are “certified”, which means 300 hours or less of training and they did not take the National board exam or complete a graduate program.

vacation for the family is no small expense, but there are plenty of ways you can minimize the hit your wallet takes and focus instead on exploring new places while making great memories.

Travel during off seasons. Although peak season varies by destination and region, virtually every location has an off season when demand is lighter and so are prices, for everything from hotel rooms to entertainment. The one downside is that while off season travel can be great for a strict budget, lower tourist traffic means many attractions and amenities may offer reduced schedules or even close. An alternative is traveling during what’s known as the shoulder season, the transitional timeframe between peak and off-peak seasons, when it’s easier to find the best of both worlds: lower prices and plenty of things to see and do.

Bringing Nostalgia Back to Road Trips

family road trip can bring on a strong sense of nostalgia. Although much has likely changed since you embarked on your first journey as a child, there are still plenty of ways to appreciate road tripping with the family and bring the best of “then” to “now.” Seating selection.

Consider a one-tank destination over a cross-county trek to help deliver a memorable experience with your family.

he smell of the grass and the dirt….The crack of the bat…The snap of the glove…Softball is BACK!!! The Youth Softball Association of Coral Springs (YSACS) is beginning its fall Rec season. We have a new home field at Cypress Park this season and we could not be more excited. From our Pig Tails (6U) all the way up to high school teams, we are a busy bunch! Softball has become an important part of many families in the city. Not only do we have a strong rec program, the city of Coral Springs is also well represented in the State with our various travel teams. Many have just returned from summer state tournaments where they earned national recognition in their respective age groups. Along the way, the girls and their families have created what are sure to be life-long friendships and relationships. We have spent countless hours together on and off the field, driving to and from practices and tournaments, enjoying team meals and parties, and (the girls’ personal favorite) hotel stays for faraway overnight tournaments. They have attended summer softball camps through the city in conjunction with the FAU Softball coaches and players. The girls are learning the life-long skills of responsibility and hard work. They practice 2 to 3 times a week and have tournaments or games on weekends. They must keep up with their school work and family responsibilities. The girls on the travel teams come to practice with smiles on their faces, ready to work hard. Their self-esteem soars when they finally catch that pop fly in the outfield they have been working on in practice for weeks. Their confidence grows when they get their first hit and they run through first base and are called safe. They are learning how to be coachable players. Along with our amazing group of coaches, the city brings in college coaches and players to assist during practice. They offer specialized training for skills and positions throughout the season. As always, city sports depend on support from our community. We have a huge tournament in Coral Springs on September 9 and 10. Local teams as well as teams from all around the state will be participating in this elite event. Please plan to come and watch your local girls! LEGALLY SPEAKING BY ALAN J. REINDFELD, ESQ

Why do young families need a Revocable Trust?

n today’s society, it is important to plan for the future of your family. Every day, tragedy happens, from car accidents to people being diagnosed with cancer. It is important that there are plans to take care of your family in case the unexpected happens. Take me for example: my mother passed away from cancer in about four weeks, but because we had a trust I was able to focus more on her and healing then on the financial matters.

What are the benefits of having a revocable trust?

expenses have to be paid by law, a Trust helps avoid issues in cases of Medicaid liens.

1. Quick transfer of assets. A properly drafted revocable trust can help the decedent’s family avoid the time-consuming probate process. The person must re-title his or her assets into the trust; this is called “funding” the trust. If assets are not transferred to the trust prior to the person’s death, the only way to transfer any assets to the trust will be through probate.

5. Focus on mourning. Avoiding probate and quickly wrapping up the affairs of the deceased helps focus on mourning rather than probate administration.

A revocable trust is a legal document that creates a plan of distribution of a person’s assets. A person sets up a revocable trust, i.e., a “living trust,” during his or her lifetime, which becomes irrevocable upon their death. This means that the person has the power to amend or revoke the trust only during his or her lifetime. During the person’s life, the beneficiaries may include the person him/herself, his or her spouse, children or other close relatives. Once the person passes away, the property that is titled to the trust is distributed pursuant to the terms of the trust.

2. Avoid Probate. At a minimum, probate administration will take over six months. The administration usually costs a minimum of $500 and many times can cost more based on the complexity. There may be other fees and costs associated with administration. 3. Privacy. A revocable trust is a private document that does not require filing with the court. A will, however, is a public document that must be deposited with the court after the decedent’s death. 4. Depending on the Trust and Trust asset, some assets of a Trust are not subject to creditors. While most

6. Name a person who will handle your affairs. A revocable trust along with a proper will allows a person to designate who will handle their affairs once they pass away. 7. Reduction of estate taxes. While a trust is not a tax savings tool, there may be some provisions included in the trust that allows you to transfer your wealth by establishing a credit shelter trust in the event of death.

Healthy Eatings

Good Eats with Grapes Make a heart-healthy menu with flavorful fruit FAMILY FEATURES

H

eart-healthy foods can play a role in healthy aging. Whether you enjoy them by the handful as a refreshing snack or use them to add color, crunch and a touch of sweetness to a meal, grapes are a heart-healthy option that make eating better easy.

Grapes of all colors - red, green and black - are a natural source of beneficial antioxidants and other polyphenols. At just 90 calories per serving, they also contain no fat, no cholesterol and virtually no sodium. With a juicy burst of flavor, grapes show how simple it can be to make good-for-you-dishes that also taste great. Even though California grapes are a snacking staple in most kitchens, you may not realize how versatile they can be for cooking. For example, grapes add a sweet touch to a crunchy yogurt salad and complement the bold spice on a skewer of grilled shrimp. Fresh, flavorful grapes even put a tangy, fresh twist on a soothing glass of iced tea. Find more delicious recipes to make healthy eating easy at GrapesfromCalifornia.com.

Grapes and Brain Health A grape-enriched diet helped protect against metabolic brain decline in Alzheimer’srelated areas of the brain, according to research from the University of California-Los Angeles. The pilot study, funded by the California Table Grape Commission, was conducted among people with early memory decline and showed that subjects who didn’t consume grapes exhibited significant metabolic decline in these critical regions. Additionally, those consuming the grape-enriched diet showed beneficial changes in regional brain metabolism that correlated to improvements in cognition and working memory performance, according to a report published by Experimental Gerontology.

Healthy Eatings

Smart Choices

Fueling kids for back to school

As kids head back to school, it’s a good time to refocus on nutritious food and beverage choices to make sure kids are properly fueled and ready to learn. Making the best choices for her family is every mom’s priority, but it can be confusing to navigate all the options available. For example, many celebrity websites, diet books, blogs and popular social media feeds make it appear trendy to ditch dairy. Yet experts say going dairy-free has significant downfalls, especially for kids and young adults. A survey from the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) found 6 in 10 moms have tried restricting their dairy intake, and fewer moms encourage their kids to drink milk today compared to how many were encouraged to drink milk themselves as children – in fact, some are even restricting their children’s intake of dairy.

However, many moms know how important milk is for their kids. According to the NOF survey, more than 80 percent of moms know milk is nutrient-rich. In fact, milk is the top food source for three of the four nutrients of concern identified by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans: calcium, vitamin D and potassium. Incorporating farm-fresh milk into your diet can be fun for the whole family. Try making your own flavored milk or smoothie at home with these recipes for Vanilla Cinnamon Milk or a Rainbow Unicorn Smoothie. Find more information and nutritious recipes to pair with milk at milklife.com.

Optional toppings:

6 tablespoons whipped cream 4 teaspoons sprinkles horn candles, wicks trimmed Blend milk, yogurt and fruit until smooth, adding additional milk or water to thin, if needed.

Vanilla Cinnamon Milk

It can be hard to get enough nutrients without milk in your diet. Drinking dairy milk during childhood through early adulthood is important to help achieve maximum bone strength. It’s also important to drink milk as an adult to help maintain bone strength and density. Most dairy alternatives don’t have the same nutrients as dairy milk and kids may not eat enough kale, spinach or sardines to replace the calcium in milk.

PUZZLE ANSWERS

God’s CoRNER

Prayer BY DR. MIKE ROzENBLUM (GREEN CHIROPRACTIC) CALVARY CHAPEL FTL - MEN’S MINISTRY

So if God already knows everything, why do we even need to pray? God existed before there was anything else, has everything under His command, is all powerful and after creation says in the book of Genesis, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;”. God created us to have relationship with Him. Prayer is simply defined as talking to God. Although God knows everything, like any Father, He still likes to hear the request of his children. As a Christian, I believe that the Messiah has already come. His name is Jesus, and while He was with us, He gave us an example of how to pray. Here is a very modern translation of the Bible which highlights His example for prayer: “Our Father in Heaven, Reveal who You are. Set the world right; Do what’s best— as above, so below. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You’re in charge! You can do anything you want! You’re ablaze in beauty!” (The Message)

Here are 5 things to remember about PRAYER: 1. PROCESS. There really isn’t one. We can pray anywhere, anytime. He recommends praying without ceasing. It is always good to get your head and your heart right before praying. I also recommend to pray for others and not just ourselves.

5 3 6 4 2 8 7 9 9 1 2 3 7 5 4 8 7 4 8 6 9 1 3 2 1 7 3 2 5 6 8 4 2 5 9 7 8 4 6 1 8 6 4 1 3 9 2 5 6 2 1 5 4 7 9 3 MY 4 PERsonAl 8 PRAYERs 5 9 includEs 6 3 4 bAsic 1 7 coMPonEnts: 3 9 7 8 1 2 5 6

1 6 5 9 3 7 8 2 4

2. POWER. Remember who you are praying to. God is all powerful. He created the whole thing. Which means He is the architect of everything. I rejoice in worshipping a God I don’t fully understand all the time. However, I know, based on evidence, that He has the power to do anything. 3. PRIVACY. We know that the Bible tells us that wherever 2 or 3 are gathered in His name, the Lord will be there. But I believe the most effective prayer is private. Whenever I want intimacy with someone, I want it to be just between me and them. 4. POSTURE. Immediately, you think of the “right” posture during prayer. Prayer comes from your heart, so don’t worry about the position of your body. Instead, be mindful of the posture and condition of your heart. 5.PERSONAL. Make prayer real and not repetitious. No one has conversation where they repeat the same things over and over. It should be no different with God. Talk to Him as a Father or as a friend who sticks closer than a brother. He loves you unconditionally.

Adoration - God you are Awesome and I love you

Confession - You and I both know the dumb things I do. Please forgive me

Thanksgiving - I realize I have way more than I deserve. Thanks!

Supplication - Here is what I am asking from you. Only do it if you agree that it is best for me

If you’ve never talked to God, try it today. May He richly bless you as you enjoy great conversation with Him. www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM
