Estimated Tax Payments And The Underpayment Penalty Now that this year’s tax filing deadline has passed, and you have either filed your return, or are on extension, you may have some questions about the requirement to pay estimated taxes. Your starting point for estimated taxes for the 2017 tax year, is your 2016 return or your estimated numbers if you have filed an extension. One of the most important jobs of your tax professional is to make certain you are not subject to estimated tax penalties, while simultaneously conserving your cash for as long as possible. This means estimated tax planning is an essential part of our role as tax advisor. We do understand your income may not be earned evenly throughout the year, so oftentimes we need to project your tax liability on a quarterly basis.

But it is your tax information and projection of gains and losses, which ultimately determines how much, and when, you must pay estimated taxes.

The more complex your personal tax situation, the more complex estimated tax planning becomes.

Ultimately, working together with your tax advisor, you should be able to meet your estimated tax payment responsibilities, so as to avoid the imposition of penalties that might other wise apply.

Individual taxpayers are required to pay their Federal and State income taxes on a “pay as you go” basis. This means that throughout the year, taxpayers are generally required to have income tax withheld from their wages, as well as pay estimated tax payments on a quarterly basis on income other wise not subject to withholding. There are several methods of determining the minimum amount of estimated taxes and withholding that must be taken out of a taxpayer’s earnings or wages in order to avoid the imposition of non-deductible penalties.

In general, withholdings from wages are required on a pro-rata basis for the amount earned. For these purposes, the taxpayer is required to advise their employer of how many withholding exemptions they wish in order to determine how much tax is withheld from their compensation.

The general rules with respect to estimated taxes are as follows: 1.If the tax after a reduction for income taxes withheld is less than $1,000 no penalty is applied for failure to pay estimates.

2.If the taxpayer had no tax liability for the prior year, was a U.S. Citizen or a resident for the entire year, and the year was a full twelve months, there is no requirement for making estimated tax payments for the current year.

For non-wage income, a quarterly estimate system is in place. Under this system taxpayers are required to make quarterly estimated tax payments, generally in April, June, September and December

The Quirky Consequences of the Death of Aaron Hernandez On April 19, 2017, Aaron Hernandez, the former Universit y of Florida and National Football League Star, hung himself in his jail cell. It was a c onclusion to a chapter which saw someone rise to the heights of stardom, and then crash and burn. While I do not wish to rehash the whole c ase, there are some interesting and morbid consequences for his Estate due to his death.

The mother of Odin Lloyd, the man Aaron Hernandez was convicted of murdering, is suing him for wrongful death. The closest example I c an c ome up with is O. J. Simpson and the wrongful death lawsuit and damages awarded to the Estates of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald L. Goldman. The lawsuit by the Estate of Odin Lloyd could have been wor th potentially millions against Aaron Hernandez, if they received a judgment in favor of the mother of Odin Lloyd.

However, thanks to an interesting quirk in Massachuset ts rule… “abatement ab initio.” This rule is followed in Massachuset ts but not all states. The rule roughly states that if a person (Aaron Hernandez) dies af ter c onviction (which occurred in 2013), but before exhausting all appeals, which Aaron Hernandez had not exhausted and was actively appealing, then the case is treated as if the trial never happened. What this means is that Aaron Hernandez, because of his suicide is not c onsidered guilt y of it. This was used in the Enron Scandal, and primarily

by Kenneth Lay, the former President of the Company who was expected

to be forced to provide restitution to the shareholders of the Company af ter Enron’s bankruptcy and sc andal, but instead died of a hear t at tack on July 5, 20 0 6, and the Federal Judge in the c ase used the precedent of “abatement ab initio.”

So what does this mean? This means weirdly enough, that whatever remaining monies Aaron Hernandez may have had in his name, those will most likely not be taken by the wrongful death lawsuit by the Estate of Odin Lloyd and Mr. Lloyd’s mother. It may also mean that the New England Patriots, who terminated Aaron Hernandez’s c ontract based on the Murder he was previously c onvicted of, may have to pay his guaranteed salar y to Aaron Hernandez’s Estate. I say most likely, because this precedent can always be over turned by the United States Supreme Cour t, or any Cour t with the proper jurisdiction to hear this c ase.

DIY Car Care Everyone Can Do

(Family Features) While taking your car to an auto service professional is a great way to ensure its performance, the Car Care Council reminds vehicle owners there are few simple vehicle checks that they can easily learn and do themselves to save a little money and help keep their vehicles running efficiently all summer long.

With basic knowledge of common maintenance practices and a little time, motorists can inspect the following components in their own driveway: • Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.

• Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer fluid and antifreeze/coolant.

• Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.

• Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades. Keep the reservoir filled with windshield washer fluid.

• To keep the cooling system working effectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. Never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir. As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles.

• Check the gas cap to ensure it is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

• Don’t neglect the exterior. When washing the outside, make sure to include the tires and wheels and the underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. The body of the vehicle should be washed using a product sold specifically for cars. Wax your vehicle every six months.

“Varicose Veins are more than skin deep”

O

ur body does so much day in and day out, and most of that work goes unseen. Our veins have an important job, carrying our blood back and forth to our heart only to be pumped out again. As we age, this daily toil can become more apparent as veins reveal themselves like road maps, especially on our legs. When they become deeper and wider, such as the case of varicose veins, that is when it can be cause for concern.

Not only can varicose veins be unsightly, but they also can be a signal that something else is happening within the body to cause them. Each vein has a tiny valve that helps it do its job, but there can be leaks and the valve can malfunction causing the blood to back up and the vein to bulge. Sometimes, having varicose veins can mean the person with them has cardiovascular problems.

Many people will seek out a doctor to get rid of the unsightly veins, but sometimes the doctor they consult with is more of a plastic surgeon or dermatologist and does not probe deeper to understand the root cause of the issue. According to company spokesperson Adam Kustin, people who have issues with their veins often complain of achy legs or numbness, among other symptoms. In order to ascertain the underlying problem, patients who come into our office undergo an ultrasound.

“You and I can walk in and both have the same degree of problems with our veins] and there is no way to tell [the underlying issue] based on the surface,” says Kustin. “It is important to see a doctor.”

nce the structural elements and hardscape features of your outdoor living space are in place, it’s time to turn attention to the details that really bring the area to life.

Succulents are a great way to add texture, interest and color to a planter or table-top pot. For more color, opt for low-maintenance perennials that require little water. 7 Tips to Shake Up Your Lifestyle Estimated Tax Payments And The Underpayment Penalty If a taxpayer does not meet one of the above exceptions they are required to make estimated tax payments. Once a taxpayer is required to make estimated tax payments, they can keep safe from underpayment penalties by paying in, through withholdings and/or timely estimates, at least 10 0% of the prior year ’s tax liabilit y or, 110% of your prior year ’s tax liabilit y if the prior year ’s adjusted gross income was greater than $150,0 0 0.

As an alternative, if you pay into withholdings and make timely estimates of at least 9 0% of your current year ’s tax liabilit y, you will not be subject to an underpayment penalt y.

The last method for minimizing exposure to underpayment penalties is annualization of income. In cases where a taxpayer has lower income and higher inc ome periods during the tax year, this method allows the taxpayer to make estimated tax payments more in line with the income earned. Therefore, if the taxpayer earns much lower income in the f irst quar ter than say in the four th quar ter, the f irst quar ter estimated would be much reduced. The tax payments will be made up in the four th quar ter when more inc ome is earned. Under this method, no underpayment penalt y will apply where the taxpayer pays in at least 9 0% of the current year tax, based on annualization of the actual year-to - date income for each quar ter of the tax year.

To take advantage of all these exceptions Form 2210 must be completed and f iled with the taxpayer ’s Federal income tax return.

Clearly, if earned inc ome from say a par tnership or a f low though S Corporation is signif icant, there may not be adequate withholdings available to meet a taxpayer ’s withholding requirements or to cure shor t falls in the earlier quar ters.

Abigail My name is Abigail Von Doodle. My parents call me Abbey. I was a stray on the streets and just 6 months old, when I found my way to my furrever home one rainy day in June 2014. It was very frightening on the streets, and when I finally found my parents, I was very thin and had a few scars from things I no longer think about. I have gained 20 pounds since then! I love playing with coconuts and eating carrots, and going for walks every morning with my mum, listening to dad play guitar, and debating ideologies with the cat.

Turns out you don’t just think you feel better, but your pet may actually make you healthier. A growing body of scientific research supports that this “pet effect” is real.

Animal health company Zoetis has launched a campaign called The Pet Effect to raise awareness about how pets make people healthier and how, by extension, the veterinary professionals who keep pets healthy are key contributors to human and public health. The company has launched this campaign with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI).

Today’s world is filled with noise, blinking lights and distractions. Print advertising utilizes all that technology has to offer to deliver targeted messages that capture the imagination through traditional storytelling and the surrounding silence allows readers to stay engaged without moving on to the next blinking light. This makes them perfect for building brand and product awareness.

Magazines also work to build trust; use them to achieve credibility with consumers.

Magazine advertising can be used to lead customers to a more conversion-friendly platform like digital.

“We’ve learned that human well-being is enhanced because of a healthy relationship with a pet. Now we want to educate pet owners, veterinarians, doctors, employers and non-pet owners about these overall health benefits,” said Dr. J. Michael McFarland, group director, companion animal marketing at Zoetis.

“We are hopeful this will help improve policies regarding pets in public places and also improve public health.”

The research collected by HABRI shows a variety of potential positive effects of pets; for example, that having a dog or cat can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. One study from the University of Minnesota even found that people who have never owned a cat have a 40 percent higher relative risk of death from a heart attack.

Other research shows that pets may help prevent allergies in children, strengthen the immune system, increase social interaction, benefit children with autism and provide relief for victims of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Pets may also provide mental health benefits. Studies show that dogs and cats can reduce several symptoms of depression, including loneliness, loss of interest and feelings of worthlessness. Pets are also shown to reduce stress and anxiety.

Human health professionals are starting to take notice that pets change people at more than just the emotional level. A HABRI study found that 97 percent of physicians believe there are health benefits to owning a pet and most of them had recommended a patient get a pet.

Veterinarians are key to educating pet owners about the many benefits of The Pet Effect. Research from HABRI overwhelmingly illustrates that pet owners have a high level of trust in their veterinarian and more than 60 percent would be more likely to visit their veterinarian if he or she discussed the human-animal bond.

So the next time you’re feeling a little blue, anxious or stressed out, maybe the best prescription isn’t necessarily from the pharmacy, but at your local animal shelter.

1 package (24 ounces) thick-sliced cinnamon bread, divided 1 can (21 ounces) Lucky Leaf Apple Premium Fruit Filling and Topping 9 large eggs 1 cup fat-free half-and-half 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup powdered sugar 1-2 tablespoons milk Grease 9-by-9-inch baking dish.

Cube cinnamon bread and add half to prepared baking dish. Add fruit filling over bread. Cover fruit filling with rest of bread cubes.

In bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half and cinnamon. Pour evenly over bread.

Cover and chill overnight.

A survey1 was conducted among U.S. Olympians, Paralympians and Olympic/Paralympic hopefuls, and the more than 1,000 who responded rated a healthy diet even higher than their intense training schedule as a key to their success.

It’s not just a healthy diet they’re seeking – it’s the right mix of nutrients to help them reach their peak training, and that includes highquality protein, like the protein in milk.

“I’m always focused on getting the right nutrients to help fuel my training and protein is something I aim to get in every morning,” said Jennifer Kessy, professional beach volleyball player and London 2012 Olympic Games silver medal winner.

“My mom encouraged me to drink milk growing up because of all the nutrients you get in one glass. Milk is still a staple in my diet, and now that I am a mom, I try to take what my mother taught me about healthy eating and nutrition and pass it on to my daughter.”
