Title: Building Relationships: Students are More Than a Test Score

Title: Play-based Activities Description: With today’s ever-increasing push for academics, it is extremely important to keep in mind developmentally appropriate strategies. Play-based activities are an engaging way for preschoolers to learn about age appropriate content and enjoy their time at school and with peers.

Description: Students in the classroom and athletes on the court desire to have meaningful relationships with their peers, coaches, and instructors. Building relationships positively impacts progress on and off the court. This session looks at morning meeting, growth mindset, and why developing relationships impacts growth in and out of the classroom.

Title: Is Playdough The Way to Go?

Title: You're Not You When You're HANGRY!

Description: Research since the 1970's supports that multi-sensory learning benefits students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. This study examined three different levels of special education students and how scheduling a multi-sensory activity into the daily routine effected their pre-reading skills and attitudes toward reading.

Description: Have you received your class list to find you have a student with Type 1 diabetes? Come to this presentation, from a school nurse, and learn how to support children with diabetes. Description: School-based enterprises can be used to teach authentic job skills. This presentation will explain the process of creating and running a school-based decal making business with my high school DCD students. Data examines the effect of running the business on functional independence, applied work skills, and self-efficacy.

Description: Do you have students who think they are bad at math? Many students go through school feeling they are missing the math gene. Consider how a personalized learning environment can impact students’ perceptions on their math ability. It promotes the belief that all students CAN learn math.

Meet the Facilitators Wadena Learning Community

Dr. Dennis Lamb

Dr. Dennis Lamb is in his 38th year in education and his 18th year with SMSU. His teaching background is in elementary education, having taught 5th and 6th grade for eight years and served as elementary principal for four years before transitioning his career to higher education. He taught in two private colleges in Iowa before joining SMSU in 2002, where he directed an off-campus elementary education degree program at Central Lakes College in Brainerd. He now facilitates learning communities in the north central part of the state. A career highlight occurred in 2013-14 when he was granted a sabbatical and was a visiting professor at Udon Thani Rajabhat University in Thailand for five months. He currently resides in Baxter, MN with his wife, Joni, and has two daughters and one granddaughter.

Melanie Stier attended Minnesota State University Moorhead for her undergraduate degree in elementary education and also earned a 5-8 math specialty. Melanie was part of the Brainerd Learning Community through SMSU and completed her Master’s degree in 2009. She currently teaches 2nd Grade in Osakis, MN and is in her 16th year of teaching. Melanie lives in Osakis with her husband, Matt, two children, and three Labrador retrievers.

Dr. Tanya Yerigan

Dr. Tanya Yerigan is a career-long educator with a background in education, business, and social work. With 25 years of K-12 and higher education experience, she is a well-rounded professor that has worked with educators from several states. Tanya’s favorite part of working with practicing educators is watching them become full blown researchers. As an avid researcher herself, Dr. Yerigan’s current research includes facilitated learning, toxic stress, childhood trauma, teacher misconduct, and critical thinking through reflective practice. Fall 2018 will mark the beginning of her 21st year teaching within the SMSU Graduate Learning Community Program. Tanya also serves as the Education Department’s Off-Campus Graduate Director. Dr. Yerigan lives in rural Granite Falls with her husband Tim. Together they enjoy their five children and six grandchildren. Dr. Jay Meiners is a dedicated classroom teacher from Cottonwood. Dr. Jay Meiners is a dedicated classroom teacher from Cottonwood. For the last 19 years, Jay has been teaching science to the students at Lakeview High School. After graduating from the SMSU Masters program, Jay started working with Tanya as a cofacilitator in the Graduate Learning Community Program; they have since worked together in eight LC’s. Inspired by his own experience in a LC, Jay pursued and completed his doctorate in Educational Leadership with his research topic being the change teachers experienced while obtaining their Masters in the LC program. Jay’s research interest continues to be teacher training and development.

Jenna Bernhagen attended University of Minnesota Morris for her undergraduate degree in elementary education which included an emphasis in pre-primary education. Jenna was a part of the Willmar Learning Community through SMSU and completed her Master's degree in 2018. She currently teaches 2nd grade in Willmar, MN at Roosevelt Elementary School and is in her 10th year teaching. Jenna lives in Willmar.

Sioux Falls Learning Community Dr. John Engstrom currently leads learning communities in Sioux Falls, SD. He taught History, Economics, and Psychology for 14 years, served as a coach, and was also active in staff development, peer coaching, and mentoring. During this time, he completed his Master’s degree in the SMSU Learning Community program. John holds a doctorate in leadership, with an emphasis in organizational development. Dr. John Engstrom

Randy Adams serves as a co-facilitator with John Engstrom. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in 1995, he taught fifth grade in Arlington, TX, for two years and has been a fifth-grade teacher in the Lakeville Area Public Schools for the past 23 years.

He received his Master’s Degree through Southwest Minnesota State University in 2003. He served as a co-facilitator with the Owatonna Learning Communities from 2003-‘07, with the Mason City LC from 2013-‘15, the Sauk Rapids LC from 2015’17,and is currently serving as a co-facilitator with the Sioux Falls Learning Community.
