LIFELONG LEARNING FOR EVERYONE AT CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

welcome

MARTHA HUTZEL • DIRECTOR

As one year ends and another begins, we're taking a moment to reflect on our many wonderful accomplishments. Please join me in thanking our hard-working staff for their daily efforts to fulfill our mission of inspiring lifelong learning for everyone in our community. Read about some of our success in the Best of CRRL on pages 25-26 . Last year's Winter Reading Challenge (pages 35-36) was so successful that we're doing it again. This year's mission invites you to enjoy books from a variety of exotic locales. Although I'm not typically a regular user, I loved the enthusiasm our Facebook Group generated from the community and look forward to this year's online conversations.

16) kicks off in the schools in mid-January. Even if they've had a library card since they were babies, all kindergarten students can receive a free book at any library between January 14-March 31.

Daisy Howard-Douglas

This February we're honoring African American History Month (pages 5-6) by partnering with the NAACP and Westmoreland storyteller Daisy Howard-Douglas. We hope you'll join us at one of our special events. It's so important to bring children to the library that there's even a special day encouraging you to visit. Join us for the national celebration of Take Your Child to the Library Day (page 18) when even regular library users are incentivized to visit with special activities and giveaways . Our annual Kindergarten Library Card Campaign (page

We are once again partnering with AARP and Rappahannock United Way to provide free Tax Clinics (page 30) for qualified residents . This partnership not only has a tremendous impact on the participants, but on the community as well. Last year's tax clinics at CRRL returned $1,706,248 to the Fredericksburg region. CRRL continues to grow in many exciting ways. Check out page 28 to see some of our most recent developments at branches both new and familiar, and if you haven't yet visited the Spotsylvania Towne Centre or the Joint Use Branch at the Fried Center, please stop by. We'd love to show you around!

behind the scenes Janice's job is different every day, thanks to new customers with diverse interests and co-workers who love to share what they are reading. What has been a favorite or notable responsibility during your tenure so far? In my 30 years at CRRL, I have had many amazing opportunities. In the 1990s, I was the branch manager who opened Porter Branch in 1992, and then Salem Church Branch in 1994. Creating fun family programs for the community, such as a big Harry Potter party, and the first CRRL Dr. Seuss birthday celebration was very rewarding. Since 2001, I have been CRRL's materials buyer - selecting books, movies, and audiobooks for our collections.

What are your goals for the library's future? I wou ld like to expand our digital collections - eBooks, eAudios, eMagazines, streaming feature films, and instructional videos - to more people in the community. The library already offers tens of thousands of these at no charge, but the demand is growing.

Which books are you reading, audiobooks are you listening to, or movies or series are you watching? I read w idely and randomly. I always have an audiobook or two on my phone and love book-based movies. My recent favorite books were Circe, by Madeline Miller, Atonement, by Ian McEwan, and

Bellewether, by Susanna Kearsley.

Janice Black Collection Services Coordinator

What is one of the best-kept secrets about the library that you wish people knew? If CRRL doesn't own something t hat you are looking for, submit a Suggest a Purchase request and we'll try our hardest to add it to the collection or borrow it from another library through interlibrary loan.
