LIFELONG LEARNING FOR EVERYONE AT CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

welcome

MARTHA HUTZEL n DIRECTOR

The library wouldn’t exist without each library customer, our community partners, and support from the local jurisdictions. This month, we are featuring the County Administrators and City Manager from our service area. Without them, we couldn’t provide award-winning library services! (page 28) If you haven’t yet joined the Friends of the Library, now is the perfect time! The Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, December 4 from 7:00–8:30 at Fredericksburg Branch when our expert staff will recommend great books for your holiday shopping and reading needs. This non-profit organization raises funds through book sales. Their work allows us to enhance library services, expand staff training opportunities, and supports one of the key educational facilities in the community—the public library! Learn more and join on page 37.

The end of one year and the beginning of the next are both a cause for celebration and a little bittersweet. At CRRL, this year has been a busy one, with lots of exciting new projects and services in addition to all of our wonderful daily offerings. Check out the Best of CRRL to read about some of our 2017 accomplishments, including the beautiful new shelving at Porter Branch. We’re looking forward to 2018 and will work hard to continue to bring lifelong learning to everyone in the community! (pages 9–10)

Winter 2017

The new year also brings resolutions. Top of my list is to join our first ever Winter Reading Challenge: Books on the Big Screen, sponsored by Splitsville. Meet this challenge and receive a mug perfect for enjoying a warming winter beverage! Learn more on pages 23–24.

I am thrilled to announce that New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award nominee Emily St. John Mandel is coming on March 17 at 3:00. Her book Station Eleven is a beautifully written novel set in a time when the world has been turned upside down, yet art and theater endure. Although the library is hosting, due to the anticipated size of the audience, the event will be held at the University of Mary Washington’s Stafford Campus. (pages 5–6) In branch improvement news, Spotsylvania County recently repaired the roof of Salem Church Branch and is working on new carpeting for Snow Branch. Thanks to a generous donation, both the children’s and teens’ areas at Cooper Branch have a fresh, new look. Work at Fredericksburg Branch has begun in preparation for expanded parking. Thank you for your continued support.

RAPPAHANNOCK

READS librarypoint.org/rappahannockreads

Rappahannock Reads is our invitation to everyone in the community to read the same book and engage in library events reflecting on the book’s themes. Our selection this year is Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. This audacious, darkly glittering novel about art, fame, and ambition is set in the eerie days of civilization’s collapse. One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Borrow your copy by placing a hold at librarypoint.org or calling your local branch. Read it this winter, then come meet the author March 17!

regional partners Central Rappahannock Regional Library’s award-winning service is made possible by 47 years of regional cooperation. These regional administrators exemplify the ideal that together, we are able to offer more value to library customers, enrich the community, and empower citizens with essential library services.

Mark Taylor Spotsylvania County Administrator since June 2015 Mark Taylor has worked for Spotsylvania County for 10 years, previously as Deputy County Attorney (1996–2000), and County Attorney (2000–2006), and as a Virginia local government attorney for 26 years. “Our regional library enriches our community by bringing people and information together. Working together regionally enhances our capacity to maintain a large, varied collection of print, audio, and audio visual materials, and provide both live and webbased information as well. That richness helps make our branch libraries in Spotsylvania truly vibrant community centers.”

Tim Baroody Fredericksburg City Manager since June 2016 Before working in Fredericksburg, Tim Baroody served Stafford County for almost 13 years as the Director of Economic Development and Legislative Affairs and then as Deputy County Administrator. Before joining Stafford, he worked on Capitol Hill. He and his wife, Kristen, have three young children. “The City of Fredericksburg is blessed to be able to rely on exceptional staff who create technology-rich opportunities in a welcoming environment. Our library system is a jewel, and a model for regionalism in Virginia. Easy access to computers, history, live performances, lectures, movies, (and yes, even books!) can be found downtown or throughout the region.”

Norm Risavi

Tom Foley

Westmoreland County Administrator since October 1993

Stafford County Administrator since February 2017

Norm Risavi has served as Westmoreland County Administrator since October 7, 1993. Previously, Mr. Risavi served as County Administrator for Middlesex County, Virginia, for Berkeley County, West Virginia. He has worked in local government for 26 years. “The regional library is one of the best bargains for our citizens. The level of service provided is well beyond what a stand-alone operation would be able to accomplish. CRRL serves all ages of our population and they are very appreciative of the many types of services offered.”

Tom Foley is the newest area Administrator, joining Stafford County in February 2017. Over twenty-eight years, he has worked in local government roles of increasing responsibility in Albemarle, Caroline and Cumberland counties. He and his wife Lori have three children. “Stafford sets a high priority on regionalism, working with our neighbors on many issues–transportation, human services, mutual aid in public safety, our landfill, and regional tourism. The regional partnership we are most proud of is with the library. Libraries are the heart of our communities, great equalizers because they bring knowledge and opportunity to everyone regardless of race, class or even nationality.”
