LIFELONG LEARNING FOR EVERYONE AT CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

welcome

MARTHA HUTZEL • DIRECTOR

There's no better place to prepare for fall than your local library! We have all of the resources for the Back to School (pages 5-6) needs of students of all ages. We can help you Discover Your Roots (pages 25-26) before the holiday season begins and, learning more about distant relatives can make for great conversation at family events. In November, take a class and Create! (pages 9 - 10) a gift for someone else or maybe just for you . In today's world, we all know someone who has been touched by the opioid crisis. In September, our Porter and Salem Church Branches are each hosting a Community Conversation (page 30) on the topic, creating a space for sharing questions, concerns and ideas. Join us on November 3 at our 2nd Annual Writers Conference (page 28) at the Howell Branch. This day of celebration is a great way to learn and connect whether you are already a published author or are just getting started.

Our MakerLab offerings are growing! We now have special tablets (page 8) at our Howell Branch that allow your drawings to appear immediately on the screen and even allows you to animate them. Earn your special badge to use t he tablets independently! W e're once again hosting our Launch It! Trebuchet Contest (page 9). Build your own or attend a build-it session in one of our MakerLabs.

Our Kanopy video streaming service now offers Kanopy Kids (pages 16) and this fall, we'll introduce a new website (pages 11-12) that is accessible on any device, and provides online regist rat ion for CARL classes and events. We're opening two new branches in August! One will be at t he Spotsylvania Towne Centre and the second is a Joint Use Branch with Germanna Community College in Stafford County (pages 35-36.) Long-time employee Christine Carlson has been promoted to the Branch Manager position at the Spotsylvania Towne Centre. Christine's many years of experience make her the perfect person to lead CARL on t his new adventure.

What is one of the best-kept secrets about the library you wish people knew? Bill: The Fredericksburg Branch has a cornerstone dated 1908. Wilson Brittle and Bill Carden Facilities Maintenance
