ABOUT THE CRISTO REY NETWORK

The Cristo Rey Network is the largest network of high schools in the country enrolling only students with limited economic resources. Composed of 40 Catholic, college preparatory and career-focused schools serving more than 12,300 students across 24 states, the Cristo Rey Network delivers a distinctive approach to inner-city education to equip students with the knowledge, character, and skills to transform their lives. From freshman year, Cristo Rey schools establish a culture of high expectations by blending rigorous academics, four years of professional work experience through the Corporate Work Study Program, Catholic educational values, and support for students to and through college. The impact is clear: Cristo Rey graduates enroll and graduate from college at twice the rate comparative to the rest of the low-income population.

MISSION

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, delivers a careerfocused, college-preparatory education in the Catholic tradition for students with limited economic resources, uniquely integrating rigorous academic curricula with four years of professional work experience and support to and through college.

OUR SCHOOL - 17:1 STUDENT TEACHER RATIO

We provide a quality, Catholic, college preparatory education to young people with limited educational options. We foster our identity as a Jesuit school by promoting the following Jesuit values: Cura Personalis - meaning care for the whole self, Service to Others, Ad Majoren Dei Gloriam, Finding God in all Things, Contemplatives in Action and Living the Magis. The Cristo Rey Jesuit curriculum is centered around the core subjects of English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Theology with a wide range of advanced courses and electives available in STEM pursuits, Music and Visual Arts, Social Sciences, and Foreign Languages.

CORPORATE WORK STUDY PROGRAM (CWSP)

As a national Cristo Rey Network member, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School partners with 143 local organizations and businesses committed to our innovative Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). CWSP has a formative impact by helping students understand the relationship of education to career, developing valuable skills, introducing them to role models and mentors, and building the competence and confidence, so important in college and career success.

How It Works

Students work one day a week, August-June earning up to 50% of the cost of their education. Cristo Rey screens and places students in entry-level positions which align with their skills at partner employers. Students go through intensive career development programming prior to the start of their jobs so they feel equipped and empowered to be a successful team member at their placement. Our diverse graduates are going to college and joining the workforce, ready to succeed in today's changing world.

EARNING CREDIT FOR A COURSE STANDARDS-BASED GRADING

Grading Scale Calculation

• Standards 70% - Skill or knowledge central to the course Standards Based Grading

4.0 Student demonstrates proficiency beyond the standard required.

3.0 Student demonstrates proficiency and has met the required standard.

2.0 Student is approaching proficiency but is not yet meeting the standard.

1.0 Student attempted the standard but did not meet proficiency, even with support.

0.0 Student did not attempt to show proficiency within the time allotted.

• Practice 25% - Assignments that prepare students to demonstrate knowledge of a standard; graded for accuracy, not completion.

• Final Exam 5% - End of semester finals

Successful completion of all classes (2.5 or better) during the regular school year or summer school is required for promotion to the next grade. If, by the end of Summer School, credit has not been earned for all courses, a student may be dismissed from CRJHS or offered the opportunity to repeat the same grade the following school year.

Reassessment on Standards

• Teachers provide one opportunity for reassessment outside of class, for students who earn below a 3.0 on a standard.

• Grade-level deadlines for reassessment: 9th & 10th: Reassessments in 1st semester have to happen in the first semester; then 3rd and 4th quarter reassessments have to happen within the quarter they originally took place. 11th & 12th: All reassessments have to happen within the quarter that the original takes place.

Standards - Recency

• Student’s score for a standard will be calculated based on recency - only the most recent attempt will be counted in their course grade.

POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS (PSEO) CREDIT

Students participating in PSEO earn high school and college credit through enrollment in a college-level course taught at a postsecondary institution (PSI) by college faculty. Students may only register for one PSEO course each semester. Students give up their office hour period to take the PSEO course. Students are strongly encouraged to take courses not offered at Cristo Rey that will enrich their educational experience.

• Students who pass a PSEO course with a C or higher will earn high school elective credit of 0.5 (half credit) towards graduation. Students may only receive up to 1 elective high school credit each year, regardless of the total number of PSEO courses taken. Students must take PSEO courses for a letter grade. Elective credit earned through PSEO will be recorded in the student’s transcript.

• CRJHS will not award high school credit for a PSEO course taken in place of a core subject area (English, Science, Math, Religion, Social Studies).

• PSEO classes may not conflict with the student's core high school schedule, including the CWSP internship. As CRJ is not an open campus, students may not leave the building during the school day, but arrival and dismissal times are negotiable to support coursework.
