Throughout the 2024-25 school year, our Cristo Rey community embraced the Ignatian ideal of “Living the Magis.” The word magis has carried many interpretations over the centuries. Here, at Cristo Rey, we understand it as a way of being and becoming for the universal good. It is not simply the pursuit of more. It is the pursuit of what matters most, guided by purpose, gratitude, and the desire to serve others.
During this school year, we witnessed this spirit of being and becoming throughout our campus. We saw unused space transformed into the warm and welcoming Loyola Dining Hall where students gather each day to share meals and build friendships. We witnessed new innovation emerge with the introduction of the first industry-aligned pathway in the Corporate Work Study Program – a program already recognized as the most distinctive in the state. We have seen the introduction of new academic intervention programming to meet students where they are and help them take steps toward college readiness. Each of these examples reflects a community that views the world not as it is, but as it should be, and then chooses to act accordingly.
To help define the meaning of magis, Barton Geger, S.J., points to a familiar proverb: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” At its heart, magis is the commitment to form young people who are prepared for a lifetime of opportunity, contribution, and service. This is the essence of our transformational mission. Last June, one hundred students graduated with the knowledge, experience, and confidence to take their next steps with purpose. They leave knowing that their God-given potential is not fixed–but being and becoming.
“Living the Magis” invites us to look beyond ourselves and to recognize the deep promise within every young person who walks through our doors. It challenges us to build a school community that prepares students to lead with courage and compassion.
As we continue this mission, we do so with gratitude for all our supporters listed throughout this annual report who make it possible. Because of you, our students have the opportunity to become who they are called to be.

IT IS THE PURSUIT OF WHAT MATTERS MOST, GUIDED BY PURPOSE, GRATITUDE, AND THE DESIRE TO SERVE OTHERS.
JASON MORRISON PRESIDENT

Discovering Cristo Rey from Different Directions Led The Thorntons to Make Transformational Impact Together
Finding Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Twin Cities seemed like a moment of synchronicity for Ann and Taige Thornton, each finding out about the school independently. Ann’s introduction came through hearing about Cristo Rey at her church in 2010, and Taige came to learn about Cristo Rey through an external consultant that his organization had hired to research where to invest their charitable funds. In both cases, Cristo Rey was the answer.
Together, Ann and Taige bring a shared conviction shaped by their families. “Growing up, education was central in both of our families. It was a pathway to fully contribute back to the community,” Taige explained. “Humility, hard work, and service were modeled for us those are the same core values Jesuit education has.” Cristo Rey’s mission, especially its integration of rigorous academics, Jesuit values, and professional work experience, resonated deeply. “We said, ‘The Jesuits are on the right track, and we want to be part of that’. We don’t have to recreate it, we can just support it.”
With Ann’s background in college counseling, the call for help was one that resonated. Since supporting the seniors in the first graduating class, Ann has stepped in, working closely with students. “It was so rewarding … it was very easy to be involved here. I felt very welcomed and appreciated.”
Whether she is helping seniors at FAFSA Night, chaperoning students during college visits, or supporting them with their application essays, she sees their growth firsthand. “Most 17 or 18-year-olds never have the opportunities our students have.” Ann recognizes that a student’s experience at Cristo Rey brings unique insights. “Their CWSP supervisor tells them that they are hardworking and coachable. Traits they didn’t know about themselves.”
While their introduction to Cristo Rey may have come from different angles, their longterm commitment is sustained by the shared outcomes and success they witness in Cristo Rey students. (Continued on next page.)

IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO GET INVOLVED, PICK HERE. THE MODEL WORKS. ANN AND TAIGE THORNTON
“You can’t get to know the students and families and not want to keep it up,” said Ann. “Every time I’m here, I see the impact.” For Taige, the school’s results speak clearly. “When we found your model, we said this is a great mission—and it works. Watching it work has kept reinforcing us to stay supportive. You’re doing the right thing for the right purpose.”
Ann and Taige also noted that many organizations and wellintentioned individuals recognize the disparities that persist in education, yet achieving real progress can be challenging. However, their response to that reality was immediate and clear. “Not here,” they said, pointing to Cristo Rey as a place where meaningful change is happening and where results can be seen. In their view, Cristo Rey stands out because students receive opportunities along with the skills, confidence, and support needed to utilize them effectively.
For the Thorntons, this why they have remain committed for the pas 14 years. The impact is visible, and the mission strong, as students’ fut take shape at Cristo Re

Forging new career pathways, Cristo Rey Students thrive at Minnesota Epilepsy Group with the guidance and support of Supervisor Lee Wolfinbarger.
When Cristo Rey students Barbara and Celina step into the Minnesota Epilepsy Group clinic each week, they enter a world few high school students ever glimpse. Under the guidance of electroencephalographic (EEG) supervisor and education coordinator, Lee Wolfinbarger, they are discovering not only a potential career path but also their own confidence and capacity to contribute in a professional medical environment.
Wolfinbarger, who began his own career as an EEG technologist with no prior experience, understands how exposure to this field may address an industry talent gap “We are about twenty-six thousand EEG technologists short of what would be ideal to staff nationwide,” he said. “Only about twenty-seven percent of hospitals have any EEG services at all. There is a huge need for people who understand this work, and most people do not even know this field exists.”
The partnership between Cristo Rey and the Minnesota Epilepsy Group began when business development specialist, Brendan Cassidy, discovered the Corporate Work Study Program at a fundraising event. The fit was immediate Wolfinbarger shared, “Once we learned about it, we thought it would be a good match Getting younger people aware that this field exists is important, and for them it is an opportunity to learn about patient care and the medical environment.”
For students interested in healthcare, the placement offers an early and meaningful first step. Barbara and Celina began learning simple tasks at the clinic, including greeting patients and understanding the clinic's workflow. Soon, they moved on to measuring and marking the head for electrode placement and even learning to read EEG wave patterns. “The notion of being able to read brain waves is intriguing to most people,” Wolfinbarger said. “When they can perform a quality EEG that helps someone get the diagnosis they need, there is pride and reward in that.”
The impact is already visible. “When they first came here, they were shy and quiet,” Wolfinbarger recalled. “Now they show more of their personalities. They recognize what needs to be done, they ask questions, and they step in with more confidence.” One of his favorite memories is the day each student successfully completed a full set of measurements on a patient. “You could see the pride in their smiles,” he said. “One of our students does not smile often, so seeing that big smile meant a lot.”
The new summer CNA training, hosted by St. Catherine University and funded through a grant from the GHR Foundation, has also accelerated their readiness. “They came in with foundational knowledge about healthcare, patient interaction, and terminology,” Wolfinbarger explained. “It allowed us to jump right into EEG specific work.” (Continued on next page.)

Their motivation is undeniable. The team was surprised when both students asked to take foam mannequin heads home so they could practice placing and marking electrodes on their own time. “We were not requiring them to do that,” Wolfinbarger said. “They were motivated to do it on their own.”
The experience has already shaped at least one student’s future. “Celina has been vocal that she is now considering neurology or neuroscience because of the experiences she has had here,” Wolfinbarger noted. Cristo Rey staff echoed this observation, sharing that Celina spoke with conviction about this shift during a presentation to the GHR Foundation, which funded the CNA training program.
The presence of Cristo Rey students has elevated the clinic environment as well. “Having them here has only affected us in a positive way,” Wolfinbarger said. “They fit right in They demonstrate professionalism equal to that of anyone we hire The staff get excited when they know the students are coming in.” Patients have also reacted with enthusiasm. Many express admiration for a school that places students in a real medical setting. One patient, who works in community college recruiting, was so inspired that she asked how her school could partner as well.
The Minnesota Epilepsy Group hopes the partnership will continue for many years to come. “It is rewarding to see them rise to their potential,” Wolfinbarger said. “Sometimes people underestimate what young people are capable of. We would love to see them return after college in any capacity. If they tell their friends about this career, that is even better. It is stable, it pays well, and it is incredibly rewarding if you want to be in healthcare.”
Cristo Rey Students Begin CNA Training Through St. Catherine’s University & GHR Foundation
In the summer of 2025, a dozen Cristo Rey students completed their Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training at St. Catherine’s University, thanks to the the generous funding by the GHR Foundation. Through the skills and experience gained, all twelve students have passed their Minnesota CNA exam and are now placed at several health-service industry partners for their 2025-26 CWSP internship.

Each year, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School honors two seniors with the Spirit of Cristo Rey Award these students fully embody the school’s mission through leadership, service, faith, and perseverance. This year’s recipients, Gisselle Arana Najera and Abdulbaari Abdulkadir, were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the school community and their commitment to living our Jesuit values.
At the commencement ceremony, facilities manager, Matt von Ende, introduced Gisselle Arana Najera as a consistent and resilient leader. “She has led by example,” he said, noting her challenging AP course load, involvement in athletics, and deep engagement in Campus Ministry. “She walked boldly in her faith,” he shared, adding that her wisdom and insights left a lasting impression. Gisselle also demonstrated remarkable dedication in her work-study and outside employment, saving carefully for college. Despite injuries and schedule conflicts, she remained a vocal supporter of her teammates and even served as the school mascot, Cuzco. “She’s overcome so much and succeeded in virtually everything she’s tried,” said von Ende.
President Jason Morrison introduced Abdulbaari Abdulkadir as a model of cura personalis care for the whole person. “He embodies kindness, inclusivity, and a deep love for people,” Morrison said. Known for his intellect, humility, and cheerfulness, Abdulbaari made a lasting impact through student leadership, faith involvement, and volunteer service. “He’s focused on helping others become their best selves,” Morrison added, noting Abdulbaari’s future plans to go to medical school and study neuroscience.
Both students exemplify the mission of Cristo Rey guided by faith, prepared for life, and always serving others. Congratulations to Gisselle and Abdulbaari for showing us what the Spirit of Cristo Rey truly looks like.

At Cristo Rey, a team of six academic interventionists has played a vital role in preparing students for success in college and beyond. Through focused instruction, individual support, and steady encouragement, they help students build confidence, strengthen essential skills, and close learning gaps that might otherwise hold them back.
Their work goes far beyond tutoring. They form relationships that inspire persistence and resilience, and they tailor strategies that meet each student where they are. Because of their dedication, more students are stepping into classrooms ready to learn.

As of June 1, 2025

On May 22, 2025, our community gathered for the UnGala, an evening that celebrated generosity, mission, and the enduring spirit of Cristo Rey. This year we were honored to recognize the Ryan family for their foundational role in establishing Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in the Twin Cities and for their leadership in constructing the facility that now serves as our home.

Their vision and commitment continue to shape the lives of every student who walks our halls. The UnGala brought together friends, partners, and supporters who believe in the power of opportunity, reminding us that our mission thrives through shared purpose and gratitude.
