What’s Your

Holiday Style?

T

he holidays are coming full throttle. Everyone is happy and glistening. The fam gets together. Your Amazon Prime orders are in. Your house smells like fresh baked cookies. You even have that posada coming up that everyone has been blazing up your WhatsApp about. Yet the inevitable question comes up, and somehow everything starts to crumble from there: “What am I going to wear?” Don’t panic. The due diligence has been done, and the proof is in the pudding, brought to you by me. Studies show that during a time of fashion crisis, people’s mood drop by a 49.8%. I, for sure, am in a better mood if I like what I’m wearing. Planning is key; have we not learned that yet? But to successfully execute said planned outfit, it is important to wear something that is YOU with confidence. A style that calls out your name.

The disco ball: Sequins are a must. She’s been waiting all year for this night -- the night to shine in the perfect little sequined number. To make things better, the sequins are pink in a flattering tulip-shaped bottom with long sleeves. I paired with a mini clutch and floral heels.

The home body: Comfort is key for this gal, but she won’t risk looking sloppy. Because there might be tamales at that posada, I give you a pair of high-waist super soft corduroy flares and a trendy furry sweater. Add eccentric details like these translucent sunnies and a must touch of leopard print.

The “it” girl: The one that always wants to wear the latest trends all in one -- a walking Instagram outfit post. The only thing that’s missing is her labradoodle BFF. Because I can’t have enough of the leopard print trend, this one goes all out. Matching pink printed satin-like set with a wool hat and white boots. To top it off, a leopard print coat and almond milk latte.

I close another year with you, dear Creamsters, and I couldn’t be more grateful to fill you in on the latest trends. May the holidays be cheerful and prosperous. XOXO Happy New Year!

The Meet two dynamic achievers who contribute to the development of both Laredos. They are flying high on Cream’s radar.

Claudio R. de la Cruz Vallina

Flor Gonzalez

CEO of Transportation Company

Realtor/Owner of Exit Realty

In my last semester of college, I was invited to work in transport in the traffic department -- something totally different than what I studied. I was on my way to be public accountant and auditor. As a student, I thought I’d set up an accounting firm, but destiny showed me another path.

My husband had retired from banking and saw an opportunity in the real estate and mortgage lending business. One thing that he knew was lacking in Laredo community was a full service, all-in-one office. Having studied Interior Design, I was able to apply my degree to this new business.

Because my first job was in transport, I guess that was a catalyst for the passion I developed for this business. There is no rest in the operations of this field, but I love it. Just like technology, businesses evolve by maintaining an edge, and this is something I have kept in mind as we’ve been in business for over 20 years. One of my biggest accomplishments was securing an investment in Mexico with a top-notch construction company. In 1993, after months of failed attempts in applying for a special permit, it was granted to me only two days before my chances would expire.

We opened The Real Estate Source Inc. now known as Exit Realty and the Money Source Mortgage Services back in 2000. I fell in love with the business of serving others; 28 years after graduating from college, I went back to school to get my real estate and mortgage licenses.

I don’t look at this as a business. I feel that it is part of my life and a way to serve Laredo. Laredoans have been good to me in all my business ventures, and now I give back.

Nothing would make sense without my family. They are there when I triumph, but more importantly, when I fail.

My first real estate transaction was for an elderly couple. They barely had the means and felt disappointed that no one was paying attention to them. I spoke to them, listened and evaluated their needs. I found a way to assist them and showed them a few homes. They fell in love with one home and a short time later, I delivered the keys of their new house. The feeling I got by seeing their teary eyes and excited expression made me feel like when my children were opening their Christmas gifts. At this point, I knew that my new career was meant for helping people. My inspiration is not financial. The gratification of helping people realize their dreams inspires me.

My family knows that I see failures as a learning experience and as a way to become a better person. I admire my mother as she is an example that I follow, and she gives great advice. I think having humility is very important, always treat everyone the same, no matter what their background is. I also believe we should help those in need as much as possible. 8 CREAM

Goal Digger

I

don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions, and I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that you probably don’t either. Although, it’s great to get swept away by positive vibes and all the feels… But, how many of us will actually fully and thoroughly pursue our New Year’s resolutions? You see, a new year doesn’t necessarily imply anything more than another calendar year coming to a close and the start of another. For many of us procrastinators (guilty) and motivators alike, it’s 365 chances to create opportunities to carpé diem the hell out of 2019.

Some time ago, I went through a few difficult years where I felt like an utter failure. In hindsight, it was the best damn thing that could’ve ever happened to me! Essentially, I found an immense amount of growth in my struggle. I learned that setting goals in my personal, professional and creative life were all equally important for my happiness. Now, achieving them was the most difficult part, the balancing act between striving to be a kick ass mom and finding the space to achieve, create and be FULFILLED with my own identity. Truth be told, half the time I feel like a slave to my sons, and on the same token, I feel guilty when I don’t prepare them a gourmet dinner. I aspire/envy the woman who carries about her life seamlessly, stays fit and to add insult to injury -- is a boss bitch. Oh, you little alien! That struggle, that darn juggling act that can ironically be the most inspirational thing on the planet.

In the end, I can assure you the difference lies in our attitude and how we choose to conquer the goals and the obstacles life throws our way. This New Year’s Day and every day, practice perseverance, steer clear of the naysayers and surround yourself with positivity. Rise up and don’t fold because there is an insane amount of satisfaction, evolution and untapped growth in being a “Goal Digger!” So keep your heels high and goals even higher! Discounted Tires but Full Price Care D

riving Interstate 10 in San Antonio is a treat. It moves along laterally south of the city, breaking only briefly across the north-south Interstate 35 to snake commuters up for a peek at the downtown skyline before it heads back west. I like knowing it stretches all the way from Jacksonville, Florida across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and into California, where I once lived. It was the highway I drove from my home in Los Angeles to my office on the beach in Santa Monica, where I-10 ends its flow across the southern part of our great country. I first left Texas for California in 1979, and then returned to Texas for good in 2005. I did both driving “the 10.” I’ve had nothing but great experiences on I-10, until the other day.

The sound was dull and deep, like someone banged the undercarriage of my car with a rubber mallet. I had never experienced a tire blowout before. Just as I was taking God’s name in vain, the car lurched downward and to the right. I have found that in such moments, life feels like a movie in slow motion. But instead of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek shooting their way out of a Robert Rodriguez jam with skill, grace, and flowing locks, I was trapped in a suddenly restrictive seatbelt, as I gritted my teeth, and felt sweat, tears, or both streak my cheeks.

“Just as I was taking God’s name in vain, the car lurched downward and to the right. I have found that in such moments, life feels like a movie in slow motion.”

As I looked to my right I saw the worried look on the driver of the bronze truck next to me. He must have heard the sound too, because he was looking down at my front passenger tire. As I jerked my head left to see if I had clearance there, a man in a reddish colored sedan was looking right at me with kinder eyes. He clearly did not anticipate my next move. To counter the rightward lean, which would have pushed me against the truck, I pulled the wheel sharply to the left, too sharply as it turned out. Instead of moving out of harm’s way right, I headed for harm’s way left. But then I felt the car start to lift, tilt, and skid back to the right, and not in a way that I could control. In a panic, I lifted my hands from the steering wheel. Suddenly, the car corrected itself back to center. I grabbed back the wheel and some control. Nevertheless, anticipating the worst, the cars surrounding me had by then already found their escape, scooting away as if I had the plague. I limped the car off

the highway just as KONO 101.1 was playing the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.”

Later, I recounted the auto correction of the steering to my wife as proof of another marvel of German engineering. “This amazing car totally righted itself despite me,” I said. My wife countered that “Someone took the wheel,” but it wasn’t Mr. Benz. This unexpected correction, which spared me an awful rush hour accident, propelled my head left into the driver’s side window, and the impact broke my new eyeglasses. Still, no complaints here.

The next hour was easily consumed by getting to safety, replacing the blown tire with the small donut spare, and realizing that I couldn’t drive the 150 miles back home to Laredo on it. It was then 40 minutes to closing time for Discount Tire, which I called to confirm had what I needed. At best, by that point, it was a 45 minute drive, but off I went. As I reflect back on this, I realize that I must have been in some sort of shock, as my usually sharp solution seeking senses had clearly abandoned me. I can now think of several better things I could have done or should have done to solve my tire problem.

“Help me,” was all I could think of to say when the first person I called as I was driving answered at Discount Tire on West Loop 1604 North. And that’s just what they did. During the urgent, worrisome drive across my formerly beloved I-10 during the rush hour glut, my newly broken glasses perched precariously on my face, nursing a throbbing left temple, I called Discount Tire three different times for three different irrational, nonsensical (shock remember?) reasons. Zane, Will and Josh each answered one of those calls, and calmed me with their warm professional manner. My last call was ten minutes after closing time. “Don’t worry; we’re waiting for you, Mr. Arciniega” is what Zane said just as I saw the bold red Discount Tire sign in the distance. Such care was just what I needed. Ok, that and a spoonful of sugar.

Inspiration is something that comes in different places, people and things. What inspired you to open this online store? Inside us all, is the driving force behind our creativity. It doesn’t have to be something creative that makes you creative. For me, the motivation behind my designs is my parents. They have showed me that in order to succeed, one has to constantly evolve. They have also showed me to be appreciative of everything around me.

Nuevo Laredo native, Dulce Maria Miranda is a fashion designer and owner of online store, Miranda. In an exclusive interview with Cream, she dishes on her inspiration, goals and vision for her new boutique!

Instagram @mimirandaee Facebook Mimiranda Photo session details: Designs by> Dulce Maria Miranda Design production> Valentina Haute Couture

There are probably many girls out there with dreams just like yours. When did you start working towards this goal, and how did you accomplish it? Creativity runs on my mother’s side of the family, so I grew up around a lot of artists, my mother included. Ever since I was in high school at St. Augustine, I constantly had to turn in something related to art for every class. Since then, I’ve had a knack for art. I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Fashion Design from the Art Institute of San Antonio. It was difficult being far away from loved ones, but dreams aren’t easy to reach. My advice to anyone wanting to follow a similar path is to let them know that it isn’t any easy discipline, but it is tremendously satisfying to make someone happy with a creation that began as a sketch on a piece of paper. When people buy your merchandise, is there something you hope they get to feel? As a fashion designer, I feel a million emotions at once in every step of the creative process. I think anyone feels happy when their work is sought after. If someone looks for you, it’s because they like your work, and that’s how you realize you’re good at what you do. My goal is to always believe in myself and to create pieces that leaves both my client and myself feeling great.

Your clothing is really unique, what kind of clothing can customers buy from your store? Miranda consists of ready-to-wear designs. It doesn’t generalize or stereotype people; it is for any occasion. My boutique is a reflection of who I am, my style and what I know. Fashion has changed and innovated over the years based on the newest ideas by designers. What does fashion mean to you? Fashion is a reflection of each one of us. It is the way people use clothes, the way they enjoy it and the way they transmit their feelings through their clothes.

A Fairytale at The Grove My wedding was by far one of the best days of my life. I met my husband on my high school graduation trip. He was my crush, and I was only seventeen. Six years later, we decided it was time to take it to the next level. We’ve been married for three years now, have a little, beautiful baby girl and started a new life in a different country. This year, I was feeling nostalgic and thinking it was really unfair we just had the chance to get married only once with the one we love. So Claudio and I decided to dress like a modern bride and groom and have an unusual and romantic anniversary date. When looking for the perfect place and service for any special occasion, I’ll promise you The Grove Houston is definitely one to go and visit. They’re not only located in a wonderful area of the city, surrounded by beautiful trees and fountains, but also The Grove restaurant offers a modern and elegant urban dining experience unlike anything else in downtown Houston. When we told them we wanted to spend our third wedding anniversary at their location, they were eager to create an unforgettable experience for us. We had the opportunity to have some bites and appetizers at one of the most romantic and delicate spots I’ve ever visited in the city. It actually looked like a fairytale dinner. So when we arrived there with our friend and amazing photographer, Lois Campos, we knew we were about to capture some unforgettable moments. With the perfect weather and trees covered with the most perfect little lights, plus two glasses of champagne for a toast, we celebrated every second we’ve been married so far. And believe me when I say, the romantic part was not only the setting for our dinner. We had some really romantic, Italian style appetizers as well: a platter of artisanal cheeses with some spiced olives and strawberries. They were the best starters for a magical evening. Giving you the chance as a couple to live romantic and different experiences from time to time, is the best way to keep the magic alive. An excellent dinner, in a breathtaking place with an exquisite menu and service. I still can’t believe we’ve been married for three years now, but what I’m totally sure of, is that we took the best decision when we chose The Grove in Houston to spend such a special occasion, and that we’ll find any other reason to celebrate and visit them again soon.

28, Senior Designer, Spurs Sports & Entertainment What are your interests and how does it translate over to your job? I’ve always been drawn to art, problem-solving and design. Fortunately, these are all tools I use on a daily basis as I find myself designing for brands. In school, the works of Stefan Sagmeister, Paula Scherr and Shepard Fairey really opened my mind to what design can do, and that is why I set out to follow their footsteps and try to create impactful solutions for businesses of all sizes. What are your recent projects and/ or accomplishments? I led the visual communication and created the warm-up shirts for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 Spurs Playoffs. I art directed and produced the San Antonio FC campaign for their second and third season (2017/2018). I illustrated a series of posters that received a Gold Addy Award. I’m currently designing a community court for Silver and Black Gives Back – Operation Renovation. I collaborated with fellow Laredoan, Beli Ponce in branding her new yoga studio. What are 3 words that best describe you? Curious, Strong-Willed, and Restless.

As Laredo’s only Catholic high school, St. Augustine gives students the tools they need to succeed after their studies. The students create strong bonds with each other that last for decades after graduation. Together, they walk the same hallways and follow the same faith-based, college prep curriculums that shape their lives forever.

Success Starts At St. Augustine

Dr. Matthew D. Davenport How has your education at St. Augustine influenced the person you are today? I am confident in saying that my education at St. Augustine played a major part in who I am today as a professional, a parent and a citizen of our great hometown. It helped me form the values of hard work and dedication needed to get me to where I am today. St. Augustine also instilled faith and love to help me grow into a loving husband and parent of my son. Describe your favorite St. Augustine tradition My favorite tradition has to be the Field Day held in the springtime. As someone who enjoys good competition, there was nothing better than rallying together as a class to try and beat the other grades at a variety of different sports and games.

What high school moment stands out to you? While I can’t think of one particular moment, some of my fondest memories I have are being a part of the golf team and helping with the basketball team — particularly, the road trips we had together and bonding with the guys and coaches. It was always exciting getting to leave school a little early for a fun road trip.

What advice would you give to prospective students and parents looking to enroll at St. Augustine? My advice would be to consider the overall experience you can have at St. Augustine. The education you receive will be great, with the ability for a more personalized experience due to smaller class sizes. Know that you will have the opportunity to learn and grow your faith. Most importantly, there is a sense of family with students and teachers that carries over long after your time as a student ends.

Amor por México

E

Here at Cream, we love sharing meaningful stories. Two of Laredo’s leading beauty experts share how they got their start in this booming industry and how can they make you look your best!

Hollywood Beauty Lab MIKA ZEE Why did you choose “Hollywood Beauty Lab” as the name for your business? I chose the name because I’m originally from California, and I am always inspired by Hollywood’s glamour and celebrities.

How did you begin your path into the art of makeup? I started makeup artistry back in my home state in 2012 but took it to another level when I moved to Laredo. Back then, I didn’t have a lot of friends — being new in town. I was bored and lonely, so I started practicing different looks on myself and posting my looks on Instagram. My followers drastically increased almost overnight, and people started to reach out to me to do their makeup, especially for weddings. Once I worked for a few weddings in town and San Antonio, my brides raved about my artistry and started recommending me to their friends and family. And here I am today: 4 years later booked with weddings 12-16 months ahead, and I just found out that I was chosen The Knot’s Best of the Weddings 2018 (Bridal Makeup Artist).

Hollywood Beauty Lab has been raising the bar in our city’s beauty scene since they opened in 2015. What motivated you to open this beauty bar in Laredo? What motivated me to open a unique concepted Beauty Lab was the lack of places for women and brides to experience luxurious makeup services. We have plenty of hair salons and big store makeup counters in town, but I wanted to have a place just for women who can come in, relax and experience red carpet treatments — just like in Hollywood. Every business has a purpose, goals and hopes for the future. What are some short-term goals that you have for your beauty lab? My short term goals for my business is to grow even bigger and expand all over Texas and California. We are also in the process of opening Laredo’s first professional makeup academy to train the next generation of makeup artists and boss babes. As the success of this beauty lab has expanded, what are some services that you offer to your customers now? I was very lucky to meet my friend, Julia, who is a medical aesthetician and just an awesome woman who inspires me so much!

She provides her exceptional skin care services, such as Hollywood red carpet facials, sugaring, waxing, lash extensions. We are the first in town to offer Bearded Bro facials for any man who needs extra care for their beard. She is amazing at what she does! JULIA LYNN Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you start your beauty career? I started my career as a makeup artist and lash technician around 2001. Professional Skin Care quickly followed in 2005 and Medical Aesthetics in 2014.

What has been your favorite part of your career? Corrective Skin Care is really fulfilling. Helping people overcome and beat blemishes and skin damage makes me so happy, especially when they can see and feel their skin change and heal.

What do you bring to Laredo in your area of expertise? I’m big into education. I take 2-5 continuing education classes a year, plus attend conferences, conventions and trade shows to stay current with technology, techniques and trends as it pertains to skin care and lash services. What services do you offer?

• Semi-permanent Lash Extensions including: Classic, Hybrid, Russian Volume and Mega Volume • Lash Lift/Perms • Lash Tint

• Hair Removal: waxing and sugaring

• Corrective Skin Care: Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, Micropeels, Hydrodermabrasion, Microneedling and Mesotherapy.

From every mention, referral, support and kind word — we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support from local people! And for that, we are very thankful!

Sorry,

I Can’t Make It To Your

Living in Texas and being a vegetarian is like being a unicorn.

Carne U Asada BY CAMILA CRUZ

sually, when I tell people I’m a vegetarian they don’t believe me, because… “How can you be a vegetarian when we have carne asada every other day here?” Well… I can, because I am and I have always been ever since I came out of the womb twenty-two magical years ago.

It also comes as a surprise to some that I’m the only vegetarian in my entire family. I just never liked the taste of meat and once I was old enough to realize that my dietary habits also had a good impact on the world, I decided to never change them. I have consumed meat (mostly by accident) before, so yes, I have given it a chance but I simply don’t like it! And before you ask, no, I don’t like bacon… Now that that’s out of the way… Being a vegetarian is all fun and games until you’re faced with the problem of ordering food when you’re out with friends or even worse, a date. Because not only am I vegetarian, I’m also picky as hell and lactose intolerant, so ordering food at a new restaurant is anxiety-inducing. Some would even consider it an extreme sport. “Can I have the grilled cheese, with not so much cheese and can you bring me the buffalo chicken fries without the chicken and with the dressing on the side?” Ugh. However, it’s not always that much of a struggle. Thankfully, more and more restaurants have been adding more vegetarian and even vegan-friendly options. I really would like to encourage restaurant owners and chefs to incorporate more diverse selections on their menus. Not only will you spare us with dietary restrictions, pain and anxiety but, you’ll be super trendy too. Lol.

Dine In Style

This Holiday Season

Sometimes a whole year can pass by without ever seeing and talking to our loved ones. The holiday season is a perfect time to slow down from our busy lives, sit down at the dinner table and enjoy a meal over wine and laughter. To set the stage for these unforgettable moments, we invited Maria Fernanda Volkmer from Cecilia Rose Design to give us a few pointers on how to create the perfect mood and style at our dinner table this holiday season. Let’s see what she has to say!

Editorial | Cream City Magazine

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been enamored with the holiday table. Whether it was Thanksgiving or Christmas, decorating the dinner table has always been my favorite part of the holidays. The dinner table is where the delicious meal will be had and great conversations will be held, so it has always been very important to me to make the table beautiful. This year I was inspired by the less traditional Christmas decor. Everywhere you look you are bombarded with red and white. Christmas doesn’t have to be red; it can be whatever color you want it to be! It can be a daunting task to begin decorating a beautiful Christmas table, but you just need to know where to start. For instance, your china cabinet! Look no further than your plates and go from there. Choose a color palette that will blend beautifully with your china, and add pops of color in the form of fresh fruit or ornaments. Yes, ornaments from your tree make excellent table decor!

For this table, I chose a china that was gifted to me by my mother-in-law. It has intricate lilies of the valley (which happen to be my favorite flower) in beautiful shades of white and green. As soon as I saw it, I thought of green leaves and a touch of gold. A partridge in a pear tree is what I called it. I had a bunch of pears on hand, and the song popped in my mind so I decided to look for a little bird to add character. A topiary took center stage, and lit candles gave it the warmth I was hoping for. White flowers laid throughout gave it texture, and green napkins with gold silverware gave it the pop of color it needed.

Editorial | Cream City Magazine

For my second table, which I named “Blue Christmas,” I was inspired by my mother’s beautiful Herend china. Its soft, blue hues with a touch of gold gave me all the inspiration I needed to create a soft setting in light blue and gold. I used my mother’s Christmas tree as inspiration for the centerpiece. I picked ornaments off the tree, along with some frosted branches to create a centerpiece. Candlesticks finished off the look! My grandmother's gold silverware added a touch of nostalgia, and with that the table was done! BY MARIA FERNANDA VOLKMER

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your holiday table. At the end of the day, the table is just a place to enjoy a beautiful meal with the people you love the most. Cheers!

Mercado Roma

BY GABRIELA A. TREVIÑO

T

he options for what to see and do in Mexico City are endless. When you’re here, you fill up your phone’s memory card with pictures and want to eat everything in sight! Trust us, we don’t blame you. Cities like this can be overwhelming, so a good idea is to visit a mercado — where everything you want to see and eat is in one convenient location.

In Mexico, a mercado is where everyone goes to get their groceries. It's also a meeting place for neighbors who chat as they wait for their cut of meat from the butcher or pick out some seasonal fruits. Mercado Roma is no exception. It’s just — on another level. It isn’t just like any other mercado where people go to get boring old groceries. No, at Mercado Roma, you enter into a gastronomical adventure that is also Instagram worthy!

If you’re staying at an Airbnb nearby, you can stock up on organic groceries so you can wake up to the smell of café oaxaqueño everyday. You can also buy some coffee beans or artisanal-made marmalades to take homes as souvenirs. If you’re hungry after a long day of sightseeing, you can stop by for some taquitos de maíz azul con tuétano gratinado or cemitas poblanas from Ochentaocho. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, delight in a hot chocolate and churros from Churrería el Moro. If you’ve planned to meet up with friends, you can stop for a glass of wine or a refreshing craft beer from La Cervecería de Barrio.

Some nights there are even stand up comics on stage ready to provide entertainment as you munch away on your favorite Mexican dishes. Located in the heart of the hip La Roma neighborhood, you can easily add it to your list of stops while there. If you can’t get enough and find yourself in Coyoacán, there is a second location there that is also chock-full of trendy, yet delicious restaurants. Ride up on one of the new city scooters available to all, or you can just Uber there.

Visit Mercado Roma at Querétaro 225, Col. Roma Norte, Mexico City, Mexico. 40 CREAM

Wine Society | Cream City Magazine

Rosanne Palacios

Name of your favorite wine: I’m somewhat fickle when it comes to wine, and my favorite vino changes with the season, the cuisine and even my mood. Now that there is a chill in the air, I am enjoying reds: Arrowood cab, Orin Swift zin, Stoller pinot noir. If you had asked last month when it was quite hot, I was sipping a crisp Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc or a dry riesling by Trimbach. Right now, however, because the temperature is cooling and a cheese platter is before me, I’m sipping rosé from Domaines Ott. Why do you like it? While many think of rosés as light and fruity summer drinks, this rosé has some real hardiness to it. It will stand up to rich paella or lamb, but is still light enough to pair with grilled salmon or spicy, steamed mussels. The beautifully shaped bottle and pale coral color make any table festive. What makes it special? Domaines Ott is just right. Just the right amount of acid with a hint of aromatic fruit. Low tannin and medium bodied. It has no need to be paired with anything. It’s a fun yet sophisticated sip.

Curl up by the fire this holiday season with some vino. Roseanne Palacios shares her favorite way to rosé the day away. Grab a glass, blast Edith Piaf’s “La vie en rose” in the kitchen and prepare your most scrumptious dish!

Cream presente en París

J’adore le Musée d’Orsay

U

HuipilMarket Places We Loved

Karla Benavides had a dream to be her own boss and help others out in the process. After moving to San Antonio to pursue her degree in Business Administration, the Laredo native set out as an ethical entrepreneur. She founded Huipil Market in SA, a small hub of global fashion deep in the heart of Texas. Pore over what the fashionista had to say about her brand.

Tell us a little about your business. Huipil Market started as my passion project back in July 2016. We slowly made our way to a brick-and-mortar location right in the heart of the city at La Villita Historic Arts. Our collections can also be found at other wonderful local shops in SA, such as Joyee Boutique, Element Boutique, Camilla Crown and ME Salon. For our lovely Laredo customers, we are online at www.huipilmarket.com.

What is ethical fashion? It can be best described as a “do no harm” approach to producing goods. In this business, we aim to improve workers’ conditions by paying them a fair wage and by minimizing the impact on the environment by creating products from sustainable materials. Why did you decide to create this business? As my desire to open my own business blossomed, so did my awareness of all the benefits of focusing it around a socially conscious business model. This would convey the bridging of cultures of indigenous artisans and opportunities of the modern world. I realized my buying power could truly make a difference. There is a marketplace for traditional handicrafts that supports workers’ rights, sustainability and that embraces cultural diversity and traditional art.

What can you tell us about the artisans you work with across the world? They are simply some of the most kind, hardworking, grateful people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. We currently work with families of talented artisans from India, Guatemala and Chiapas, all of whom are extremely brilliant and dedicated to what they do. Huipil Market would not have the success we do without them. We merely take decent pictures of the products and use our social media platform to promote and introduce their stunning, traditional artwork to global markets.

How do you decide on which products to sell? In all honesty, I usually tend to pick items that are easy on my eyes, which explains why the majority end up in my closet.

Why is ethical fashion something that is important to you? The fashion industry is the world’s second largest polluter, after oil. I believe we should act responsibly towards people and the environment. It’s very important for me to know that I can make a positive impact in the lives of marginalized artisans by simply choosing to work and source ethically from them, as this guarantees them job opportunities, the chance to thrive and create a better living for themselves and their families.

I highly encourage everyone to keep in mind that as consumers we have a great deal of power in our pockets. When choosing to buy at least one artisan-made product whenever we can, we are improving the lives of makers by supporting their craft and providing a stable income. Remember, small acts of kindness add up to big changes!

It’s Beginning to Look a lot like

Christmas

BY DENISSE MONTFORT

Are you struggling to come up with the perfect Christmas party? I know, Christmas is creeping around the corner, and everything is gone from the stores. Besides, gift-shopping can be a total b*tch if you didn’t make it to Black Friday. Here are some ways to have fun with your family during Christmas. From: Me / To: You.

Gift Exchange: You can never go wrong with a gift exchange. Always set a budget from the start, the minimum and maximum amounts should not be so far from each other. Instead of $20 to $30, maybe do $25 to $30. Many people believe they have to be expensive, or “seem” expensive… Um, why? There are so many cute things you can get for less than $20. Instead of purchasing the first $30-item you see, get creative! Pinterest is a thing, people! Create a gift basket full of things your person likes. You can find a brown basket for under $7 and cellophane wrap for under $3 at Walmart. Remember, being creative and personalizing your gift can be cheaper than you think! Santa Hat & Kitchen Mittens:

If you haven’t played this, then you haven’t really experienced joy while opening a present. Let me explain. Have everyone sit around a table, while someone tries to open a gift while wearing a Santa hat and kitchen mittens. This person is timed. As soon as their time runs out, start the timer over as the next participant puts on both items and tries to open the gift. Depending on how many people will participate, you can calculate how much everyone could contribute to buy the gift. If you can’t think of a way to keep Christmas fun, this family-friendly game is perfect for you!

Dice Exchange: This game is really fun, and can accommodate a large group of people. Every

participant goes and gets a gift that anyone would enjoy. Remember to set a budget; this can be between $10 to $12. They bring the present to the party, and everyone sits in a circle. A timer is used, or to make it more interesting, a song or playlist (maybe some Michael Bublé?) starts, and the first participant rolls the dice. If they roll a 3, they get to trade their present with someone else, and the dice is passed to the next person. If a 2 is rolled, then the one who rolled it has to open the gift they are holding. If it’s a 5, everyone passes their present to the left, if they roll a 4, everyone passes their present to the right. Every number will be tied to an action. This is one of the best games! After all of the fun and the food, and after all the gifts have been opened, remember to enjoy your time with your family. Like the queen Mariah Carey said, “I don’t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree.” We couldn’t agree more! Hope your holiday is filled with love and laughter. From all of us in Cream, to you and your loved ones.

Daniela Cavazos’ adventure into jewelry-making happened unintentionally.

Feelin’Fruity A

fter finishing graduate school, she started designing pieces for herself and posting them to Instagram. Friends and strangers alike slowly started to slide into her DMs wanting to buy her designs. Thus, Fruity Poms was born.

The artist creates statement earrings in all shapes, colors and sizes. Her designs are usually inspired by the business’s namesake -- fruit! Yarn, thread, clay and paint are the staple materials she uses. “I personally am a total earring addict! I seldom use any other accessory, so everything I make for Fruity Poms are pieces I would wear myself.” Having studied Painting in graduate school, Cavazos said she had experimented with fiber sculptures, but the world of jewelry was totally new for her. She is learning as she goes. Although earrings are currently her go-to item to make, she is open to creating necklaces and bracelets in the future, she said. “As cliché as it may sound, I draw inspiration from my life and personal experiences. I like that a fun accessory can also have a personal narrative that doesn't surface. High fashion is something that also inspires me. I always follow Fashion Week and street style to be aware of current trends and possibly anticipate the next,” Cavazos said of her creative inspiration for her work.

Instagram @fruitypoms

The joy of creating is what has kept Cavazos going in this endeavor. Since starting Fruity Poms, she has pushed herself to design new pieces as often as she can. She believes that this is what keeps her customers interested in what she does and keeps them coming back for more. This is what defines her brand -- the spontaneity. Most recently, she launched The Cubist Collection, inspired by the Cubist, Expressionist and Surrealist art movements. Cavazos said the most important thing she wishes to accomplish is that her customers feel special in their pieces. Seeing them genuinely happy to receive their items and rocking their earrings is what is most gratifying to her.

Looking for a unique, handcrafted item to give as a Christmas gift to your girlfriend or best friend? Not only will you win in the gift-giving department, but you will also support a small business owned by a woman! There are only upsides here. Get shopping! CREAM 49

Pets&People | Cream City Magazine

Daniela Cervantes What type of pets do you own? I own two Persian cats, one longhair and the other short hair.

What are your pets’ names? Luna and Pepper. How old are your pets and how long have you had them? Luna is six years old, and I have had her since she was 10 months old. Pepper is a recent addition to our family. I have had her less than a year. However, because I adopted her from a shelter, I don’t know her exact age. When and how did your interest in this species and race spark your interest? I have always loved all kinds of animals, but once Luna entered my life, my passion for cats grew very deeply. Do you own any other pets? If yes, what are they? No, Luna and Pepper are my only pets for now.

What do your pets mean to you? My cats are my children. They mean everything to me, and I could not imagine life without them.

What type of special care do you have for your pets? Persian cats require extensive grooming and maintenance. Their eyes constantly tear up and require daily cleaning. What is your favorite activity with your pets? Binge watching Netflix documentaries.

Are your pets trained? How difficult was it to train them? They both are litter box trained, as most cats are.

Tell us your favorite anecdote with your pets. After they get haircuts at the groomers, at times they won’t recognize each other and will hiss at one another until they realize and remember they are sisters.

Could you give us some tips for when choosing a pet? The best tip is knowing everything about a species and breed before you purchase or adopt. Being informed about what responsibility you’re accepting is ideal for the pet’s safety and health. If you were an animal, which would you be and why? I would be a cat, they sleep all day and get cuddles 24/7. What’s not to want about that?
