Sometime during 2009, in a North Laredo office, the beginning of a project spread roots based on infinite effort, heart and creativity. After completely taking life in June of 2010, Cream launched its way into forever changing the editorial panorama of our city. Almost eight years later, I still remember our first editorials, always provoking interest and bringing on the “wow” factor! Between its highly professional photographic content, avant-garde and modern design, original and innovative articles, and chic fashion intuition, Cream has undoubtedly transcended into Laredo’s most prestigious magazine. Having always been vanguard and generators of envisioned ideas, we welcome challenges to set ablaze our creative fire. For this reason today, we re-invent Cream; we present a new version, completely redesigned with inclusion of new sections, a different and more portable size, and a more posh and refined look. To appropriately celebrate this commencement, we wanted to go big! After harboring this idea for a long time, we finally decided to conceptualize something never before done by other local publications and that only Cream could positively accomplish. Cream’s destiny: London. One of the world’s top fashion capitals became center stage for our 10-page fashion production. An international team, consisting of a renowned French makeup artist and professional German and Scottish models, worked together to infuse their own distinct styles, personalities, and talents within each of Cream’s stunning images.

Page after page, we deliver love and passion with your best interest in mind. Thank you to our loyal and wonderful sponsors and friends whose trust is fundamental, especially to our All-Star Cream team for being the best the world could bestow.

The Meet two dynamic achievers who contribute to the development of both Laredos. They are flying high on Cream’s radar.

Jessica R. Rivera Head of School at United Day School

After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, I moved back to Laredo and started teaching. Before becoming an administrator, I was an early childhood teacher for several years. During freshman year in college, my cross country and track practice schedule compelled my academic counselor to place me in a children’s literature class. Being in that class and talking to other students in the education field sparked my interest. It was then that I knew my calling. I filled my extra time volunteering at local schools in Austin and switched my major to education.

Growing up, I never imagined being in the education field. Now that I am, I couldn’t imagine my life any other way. Seeing each student, unique in their own way, grow and develop into amazing individuals both in and out of the classroom is more inspiring than words can explain. A couple of years ago, the 2nd grade students created cards depicting what they thought I did in my office. The stories and illustrations were hilarious. Some students thought the Head of School’s office was equipped with a hot tub and endless Starbucks coffee.

Knowing that I am part of an amazing team of educators that help influence, inspire and change the lives of children is one of the most satisfying parts of my career. Personally, I admire three important people: my husband and my parents. They have been the rocks in my life and have taught me to never give up on my dreams. Through it all, I have learned that there will be ups and downs in any career, but every situation is made to make you a stronger and more knowledgeable person. Stay true to yourself ! 8 CREAM

Raquel Valle-Sentíes Writer & Artist

Tracing people from magazines on a window pane was the way my artistic bent started. Then, my love of reading is probably what led to my interest in writing, and it came naturally to me. I can’t imagine being a writer without loving to read.

I believe that everyone is born with a talent for something, a gift from God, and mine was in painting and writing.

What inspires me is life, my experiences, and what surrounds me. Something has to move me to want to paint it or write about it. Surprisingly, no one ever encouraged me to think that I could ever be “an artist or a writer” and I started it all after the age of fifty. Thankfully however, I have had the privilege of meeting and becoming friends with many fascinating people young, and older along the way who have broadened my perspectives, inspired me, encouraged me, and supported me in my artistic and literary endeavors. As long as there’s a breath in me, I’ll always want to take the next step, write another play, story, or poem and fill an empty canvas with whatever catches my eye. I advise anyone to take Creative Writing courses and Drawing, Design, and Painting classes. There are also many books out there on how to write and paint that are very helpful. And even if you don’t become a recognized writer or painter, the joy that comes from doing the things you love to do are reason enough to do them. They bring peace and love into your life.

Season’s

Greetings

We get closer to the days of “I can’t believe the year is almost over” and before you even

try to finish that sentence the holiday parties have snuck up on you. Not to mention our New Year’s

resolution might last less than that wardrobe change in between your 9-5 and those mentioned parties. So let us get into the holiday spirit pronto. I’ve

prepared 3 outfits for those special occasions and highlighted the ever-changing current trends. 10 CREAM

How could I talk about holiday parties without featuring a little sequin number. Tackle the rose gold trend

in this dress with a little retro kick in the form of bold shoulders and a backless design. I’ve paired it with easy sock ankle booties and a flat top hat that channels Parisian chic feels, ready to pop some champs.

This skirt, the sleeves, --- where to start?

I’m so loyal to a cute skirt and top look. Reinvented skirts are all over and this season we see them in vinyl. Grabbing a coffee with BAE is perfect for this get-up. Worn with a bubble sleeve sweater, fringe earrings and embellished pearl booties.

Since we’re all about breaking fashion rules,

I’m bringing along my favorites from Spring for the ride this Fall/Winter. I’ve paired gingham culottes with a pink metallic bomber and a sheer embroidered off the shoulder top (and yes, I totally encourage the print mixing). Recycled and wear-yearround items are my favorite, like these chunky heel sling backs.

Whatever your occasion, don’t let it find you unprepared. Stress less and party more, is the motto, at least until the next year’s resolution. Be kind, be thoughtful, be true to yourself and have fun with trends that will never run out of style. Happy 2018!!

Marina Casso The first time I saw YSL, I instantly fell in love. YSL, Girl!!! I love everything they use from horns on purses, to patent leather heels. Leather, sexy and black are all my favorite fashion staples. I fell in love with this specific pair of shoes simply because they shine! I love having all that glitter on my feet. Also, having been born in the 70’s, I believe they help represent who I am! My personality and fashion style are very alike, resulting in a full closet of bold clothes. I love to wear all black and accessorize with hot pink, teather leopard and mixed metals!

They don’t say “good shoes can take you to good places” for nothing! In this case, fabulous shoes and purses take us straight into some of the dreamiest closets. These ladies and their fashion sense remind us why killer accessories will always be a woman’s choice of weapon.

Editorial | Cream City Magazine

Sofia Casso I remember begging my dad day and night for all these bags. I can’t choose which is my favorite; I love them all equally. What I love most is that I can wear them both on exotic trips or while having coffee with my friends. When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to grow up and own my very own Chanel. I loved playing dress-up with all of my mom’s accessories, and I thank her for lending me all her goodies! My personality and fashion style is very basic. I like a simple look with bold accessories. Sunglasses and handbags are definitely my favorite, and I usually pair them with yoga pants and a white t-shirt. A simple yet statement-accentuated get-up, such as this, is what most people would find me wearing on a daily basis.

More Presence, Less Presents W

ith every Christmas that rolls around, I become involved in more Secret Santa gift exchanges. I love being included of course, and the gathering for the exchange always overshadows the presents that were actually purchased. I don’t mind giving people gifts. In fact, I love it. It gives me the opportunity to put a smile on peoples’ faces and seeing if I nailed it with my gift. However, I’ve noticed that when I’m asked what I want, I have lately opted for experiences rather than things. I used to ask for DVDs, a particular UFC or WWE shirt, or a beanie to cover my folliclychallenged head. I thought I needed these things. Alas, I merely wanted them. What I actually need to feel fulfilled, though, are moments. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a pair of Luccheses as much as the next guy, but if I had the choice between a pair of boots and a night of deep conversation shared with a friend and a 12-pack of Texas beer, I’ll take the latter. Overwhelmingly. No lime. Eww.

Our families are a gift. So are our friends, our jobs, and our health.

I’ve always been a fan of iTunes gift cards. Being the guy who usually provides music at a party, I’ve always seen these gift cards as something that I can share with others. With them, I create an ambiance in which everyone is enjoying themselves, which in turn warms my heart. Yet, people make somewhat weird faces when I say that that’s what I want. And I get it. It’s not something I can wear, use as décor, or photographically show off on social media. I highly appreciate and am eternally grateful for any gift I receive, but If it makes us laugh or enriches me through created memories, all the better. One of the very few downfalls of being the youngest child in any family is that you begin to see your parents, older acquaintances, and siblings’ friends suffer from health issues at an earlier age – issues that are essentially a preview of what may be to come. Death, of course, is inevitable. Yet it’s only when you actually begin to witness these tragedies that you realize life is extremely short, and it’s up to us to make the most of it. I’m sure we all have an aunt or co-worker who annoyingly shares faith-based posts on “living in the moment” that are simply scrolled through. However, they’re there for a reason. Our families are a gift. So are our friends, our jobs, and our health – both physical and mental. The fact that people want us in their lives – whether through a gift exchange or as a friend – should be gift enough. On a daily basis we lose people to solitude, suicide, or sickness, and it makes me wonder how much we’re actually filling our lives with things that are actually worth it. While some children are blessed with having the personality that makes it

BY RUBÉN BAZÁN III | therubenindex@gmail.com 14 CREAM

easy for them to make friends, others are worried that no one will show up to their birthday parties. While some people complain about having too many social obligations and WhatsApp groups, others are considering suicide because there aren’t enough people who listen or care. While others are comparing and appraising each others’ possessions, a young woman in her fifties is losing a battle with cancer and fighting to raise money for treatment. I’ve seen all of these scenarios in real time, and it really puts things in perspective. This being said, I’m also the first to say it’s great to reward one’s self when hard work is put in. People work long hours to provide for their families and surprise their loved ones. That trip to Las Vegas should absolutely be enjoyed, but the superfluidities of life must not overshadow our core values. Presents are OK, but presence is better. I wonder if many of the people that left us too soon didn’t have enough of those fulfilling moments. Perhaps they lacked empathy, conversation, or time with others. So for those of you who are lucky enough to have these experiences that make life worth living, keep on asking for them. It’s not selfish to do so, and you’ll be infinitely richer for it. For those of you who see people who need these moments, believe me when I say that these are the greatest gifts you can give somebody. While gift-giving will always be a Christmas tradition (even Jesus received gold from the Magi), let’s not forget what was actually being celebrated. Jewelry, expensive gadgets, and haute couture may be nice and Instagrammable, but at the end of the day, people are only going to take friendship, compassion, and most of all, love, to the grave. Take pride in spending less, but providing more substance. Try purchasing fewer material things, and invest more on experiences that make our families and circles and communities a richer place. Let’s come together and regain the holiday season for what it’s really about. If you see me around, chat my ear up, and let’s be friends. If you’re feeling generous, I’ll also take an iTunes gift card. Believe me, I’ll share it with you some day, and I promise that the first round is on me. Happy Holidays!

Holiday Traditions

BY ELYSSA CANALES VILLARREAL

Hello December!

It is now, the most wonderful magical time of the year! We have arrived my fellow Pinterest junkies; so unlock those privacy settings on your holiday décor boards! Yea, I see you! Have no shame in your game, honey! Sometimes we need a good source of inspiration to shape even the greatest of ideas. This year however, I found myself curiously browsing through the familial traditions of others in hopes to make for a more memorable season.

On Thanksgiving mornings, I have vivid memories of my mother chopping celery for my personal fave: the stuffing. Till this day, it still remains my favorite side dish, but more importantly, I remember rushing through dinner because it is what we did after that was so exciting. While holiday jingles played in the background, we welcomed December! Maybe it was the little creative me preparing for my future self, but I lived for this moment. My little brother Steven and I had the most fun unboxing my mother’s decorations. We loved playing with the ornaments and wrapping the tree skirt around his neck while pretending he was king of somewhere. I won’t ding my mom for her lack in the creativity department; it just goes to show how a little imagination can ignite that holiday cheer. These days however, I have to say Hobby Lobby’s premature release of Christmas décor, weeks before Thanksgiving, has me feeling all sorts of pressure! But in effort to keep the tradition alive and on schedule, I wait patiently and have now made freshly baked cookies for the kids while they watch mommy decorate (emphasis on watch). I think it’s a boy thing…definitely into cookies, but decoration, not so much!

I do believe that adopting traditions into our families should be influenced by and be reflective of our personalities and lifestyles. As it should be, incorporate traditions that enrich your family and add flare that is characteristically yours. Personally, simple photographs or the art of setting the scene for a beautifully edited photo sparks something in me. I find great satisfaction in leaving a lasting

legacy of images for our future generations. Although my sons are the first to complain about any family sessions, rest and believe that one day their children’s children will be thanking them. As most mothers do, a lot of our efforts are done with our children in mind. A simple family photo today, may mean the world tomorrow. Earlier, I was ordering my son’s Christmas pajamas as I joking asked my husband, “Do you think the boys will be upset if their future wives don’t keep up these little memories?” Laughing, he rolled his eyes and said “No babe, they’re boys… we don’t care for this ____.” You can imagine what that last word was! As a parent, you can’t control everything, but the things you can...you should. How many times have we wished our parents would’ve/should’ve forced us to partake in something that as youth we didn’t see the value in. I have enjoyed sitting front and center to Nicolai, Alexei, and Andreas’ childhood, and through them I’ve created some of the best memories. Moments that perhaps they won’t remember at all, but I will. This and every holiday season, continue to make your best effort to set traditions that our families will appreciate for years to come.

Priscilla M. Beckelhymer Favorite Wine: Silver Oak, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley I absolutely love Silver Oak because of its unique array of rich flavors that explode in the mouth and its extraordinary aftertaste of roasted nuts and fresh fermented berries. What makes it so special for me, is that the first time I tried it, I had absolutely no clue what to expect. Upon first sensing the flavors in my palate, there was no turning back! It became the staple wine for any dinner party or celebratory cause! I can enjoy it with or without a meal, but I prefer it more than anything in accompaniment of great conversation with friends!

Pravina Mulchand Favorite Wine: Silver Oak, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley I love all Cabernet Sauvignons, but my absolute favorite is the Silver Oak Cab. I love it for its bold taste! My palette is always awakened by its delicate combination of licorice, boysenberry, chocolate, and black cherry flavours. Personally, I favor dark wines and this cab of 90+ points is an absolute winner! My husband and I fell in love with this wine after our special visit to the Silver Oak Cellars in Napa Valley, concluding our first trip without the kids in a few years. With this wine, we indulge in reminiscence of our wonderful time in Napa.

Gabriela V. Carriendo Favorite Wine: Tempranillo Reserve, Becker Vineyards Tempranillo is an easy wine to drink. It is smooth and not too sweet or too acidic. I think I like this wine so much because I tried it for the first time with my husband and friends at Becker Vineyards in Fredericksburg, TX. The beautiful location exhibits very tall trees and is overall a great place to enjoy the great outdoors and cool fall weather!

Nydia Weathers Favorite Wine: Siena, Red Wine, Ferrari-Carano (Sonoma County) Siena was recently introduced to me by a great friend. I like the aromas of cherry, plum, licorice and mocha that are prevalent of this red wine blend that primarily consists of Sangiovese Italian grapes. This wine is bold and rich, and at a great price point! When enjoying a glass of it, memories of laughter, love and friendship are brought up.

Favorite Wine: Reserva, Tinto, Bodegas F. Rubio

Favorite Wine: Caymus, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

I love this wine because it is full of body and energy and because its flavor lingers just the right amount of time. It is a serious, yet bold wine with a hint of oh la la! I tried this wine during a recent trip I took with my husband to the beautiful Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the absolute beauty Mexico has to offer. The best part of this wine was sharing it with the best company, good music, and amazing views of the Mexican wine country.

This wine can be described as smooth with a rich and fruitful undertone. Although this wine’s flavor is strong of fruit, particularly black cherry and raspberry, it also has a distinctive hint of oak. This beautifully layered wine has become our “family wine” ever since my father-in-law first introduced it during an intimate dinner gathering. We all loved it! Now and again, we open a bottle or two at every celebration, birthday, holiday...and sometimes just because! The aroma of Caymus welcomes wonderful memories and engaging conversations during any family event.

Plan And Invest For Your Future

W

hen calendars make the big turn from December to January, most people are cued to make annual resolutions regarding healthier eating or exercising habits, but unfortunately, we tend to miss an important target: our finances. For this reason, we invited experts from Cresta Advisors to reveal New Year tips for our financial futures. Their experience, suggestions, and services will help you lay the groundwork for reaching your financial goals in 2018 and beyond. Tell us about Cresta Advisors: Cresta Advisors is an independent financial advisory firm that focuses on helping our clients identify, set, and achieve their financial goals. Our client base includes individuals, institutions, business owners, working professionals, and high net worth families from both USA and Mexico. What distinguishes you from the rest? We are not stock brokers; we are advisors. And, most importantly we are fiduciary advisors. This means that we are legally obligated to act in our clients’ best interest. There is a big distinction between stock brokers and advisors that the public is not completely aware of, and finding out which investment professional is right for you is one of the first decisions investors should make. Additionally, Cresta Advisors successfully uses a Goals-Based Wealth Management approach as an investment discipline. This approach emphasizes investing with the objective of attaining specific life goals, and measures investment progress in relation to the attainment of those goals.

What are some common financial goals? Everyone should invest with the intention of achieving an objective, but the reality is that most investors do not have clear goals identified or even a plan on how to achieve them. Over time, an investor might have multiple goals that will evolve as they are achieved and new ones are discovered. Some examples of financial goals might include: • Save for a child’s education • Retire at a desired age • Maintain a desired retirement lifestyle • Successful transfer of financial assets to the next generation • Establish or maintain a philanthropic initiative How do you help someone achieve them? Communication is the key. At Cresta Advisors, we look for long term relationships with our clients to help us better understand their unique situation and formulate a financial plan to help them achieve their goals. Once the goals are established and the financial plan is in place, we invest their funds in portfolio models that align with their risk tolerance and financial goals. We proactively monitor and track progress in relation to their stated goals to ensure we stay on course through all financial market cycles and communicate this to our clients. Tips or action steps? The end of a calendar year is usually a time when we evaluate the things we have accomplished during the year, and establish goals and objectives for the next. These are the same principles one should apply to their financial goals. Anyone who currently has investment accounts, or is considering establishing them should consider these points: • Decide which investment professional is right for you. A stockbroker or an advisor? • Have a financial plan in place and set financial goals. • It’s never too early or too late to start planning and investing for your future. A Mindful New Year Resolution N

ew Year, the time of year when the air is brimming with hope for new beginnings and possibilities. When this holiday comes around, we always tend to dream of positively realizing certain changes to ourselves and our lives. With this innocent aspiration, we make our New Year resolutions, determined to make them stick this time around. As the calendar flips to February and then March however, those same resolutions usually fade into life’s background. We make our justifications as to why this year wasn’t the year, and we move on, unconsciously partaking in a demoralizing cycle. Basically, the problem is that for all the motivation we might have in the year, there is usually no concrete or prudent plan to go with it. So how do we make those New Year resolutions stick? For starters, it should be emphasized that a healthy body equals a healthy mind. Unfortunately, New Year resolutions are almost always solely about our body’s physical appearance. Yearly, gym memberships skyrocket the most during January. The easy and quick attainability habit that technology has accustomed people to, has damaged the general gym expectation to match the same haste and impatience. Things will not change overnight, in a week or even a month; it takes years to train a body into proper shape and to permanently step away from prolonged bad habits. When beginning, focus on short-term goals (realistic ones) for the first month or even first few months. When choosing a gym to join, make sure it welcomes you with total comfort and enjoyment. Also, find time to sit down with significant others, friends, siblings ect, and make

sure they too are on board with your metaphysical goals, offering their full support. This year, create resolutions that establish a real commitment to yourself and to a healthy mindset and lifestyle. Be sure to encourage yourself to try everything possible to make your success more evident. You are likely going to be fighting against yourself on this, but be flexible and willing to step outside your comfort zone. If you are able to, seek advice from a trainer or lifestyle coach to obtain supplemental support and professional attention. As a personal trainer myself, I can say that our profession is about loving to help people change their lives with a guaranteed success plan. Lastly, make this year the one in which you finally break out of your routinary unhealthy life cycle. Certainly, with the right mentality, you can achieve to look and feel how you have always wanted to! This year, begin your life by setting the right foundation: a healthy mind.

Because at times our city’s individuality may be taken for granted, we gathered four exchange students from different parts of the world to help us appreciate home through their eyes:

an international perspective.

Andres Ogaz F. Business Marketing / TAMIU

Where are you from? Santiago, Chile. What was the biggest cultural shock you experienced when you arrived to Laredo? The food and weather. Food is very spicy and well, very Mexican. Tacos, carnitas, and that kind of stuff we’re not used to eating. Also, the weather is so damn hot! Thus far, what has been your favorite thing about Laredo? The friendliness of people. I don’t quite know why or what makes people so friendly, but Laredoans remind me a lot of my Chilean friends. You can just easily make jokes and most things are taken lightly, you know? What do you like the least? I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to the weather. I’ve already been here for three years and I still can’t handle it! What do you miss the most about your country? My family and my friends for obvious reasons. Also, I miss skiing or climbing mountains which is something that can not be done in Texas’ flatland. What impression did you have about Laredo before arriving? Being a border city, there is some sort of expectation of danger or violence. Everyone here however, is actually untroubled and can do whatever, comfortably and safely. Is your experience far from your expectations? No, not really. I expected everything that I have been doing here so far: making new friends, learning from a lot of different cultures, and playing soccer. Improving my game while being a part of TAMIU’s soccer team has allowed me to fulfill my expectations completely.

Maurane Le Pennec Finance / Kedge Business School in Bordeaux, France

Where are you from? Bordeaux, France. What was the biggest cultural shock you experienced when you arrived to Laredo? Not walking! In France, we occasionally take the subway, but we mostly walk everywhere. Here, everyone uses the car so much! Thus far, what has been your favorite thing about Laredo? This city’s background provides

A Border Without Borders BY MARIANA ORTEGA

authentic Mexican food, without having to actually be in Mexico. So far, and for now, my favorite dish is flautas. What do you like the least? The nightlife. Having lived in Paris, I experienced an intense nightlife since clubs usually close until 6am. Clubs here close at 2am, a time that might be somewhat too early for me. Tell us a fun fact about your country. Because of the historical significance, a law prohibits citizens from naming pigs “Napoleon.” What impression did you have about Laredo before arriving? Honestly, I thought Laredo was a large city since I come from a town of 200 inhabitants. I soon realized though, that it’s not that big compared to Austin or other Texan cities. What is a common misconception that others might have about your country? Often, I’m told the same joke: “Where is the best place to hide money from a French?” To everyone’s amusement the answer is: “Under a bar of soap!” Jokingly, others make fun that French people are dirty, that we don’t shower or shave, but it’s false. I shower every day!Is your experience far from your expectations? Not really far, but different in a positive way. I’ve met so many amazing people; I’m glad to have come to Laredo.

Delia Van Zeeburg International Business and Management /Arnhem Business School in the Netherlands.

Where are you from? The Netherlands. What was the biggest cultural shock you experienced when you arrived to Laredo? I think the biggest shock I experienced was...the heat! I am definitely not used to this level of heat. Thus far, what has been your favorite thing about Laredo? That the city has two cultures: American and Hispanic. I get to experience two in one! What do you miss the most about your country? My typical early morning breakfast and also, the fact that I cannot express myself in my own language. What is a common misconception that others might have about your country? Often, people think that the language we speak in the Netherlands, Dutch, is the same as the German or Danish tongue. Based on your recent experience, what opinion do you have of the

American education system? It is quite different than in my country. Back home, there is usually seven weeks of only classes and later two weeks of exams; here in Laredo however, I am expected to study for exams throughout the whole semester and plus, I have a lot more group projects and homework. Why was Laredo your educational destination? My school required the completion of a study abroad program of at least five months. Although I could have chosen between other different universities in the United States, I liked what TAMIU had to offer the most.

Rafa Montabes Business Administration / TAMIU

Where are you from? Madrid, Spain. What was the biggest cultural shock you experienced when you arrived to Laredo? I thought Laredo would be more like a stereotypical American city, but I was shocked by the dominance of Mexican culture, evident in the food and the people. Tell us a fun fact about your country. In the world, Spain has the second highest number of bars per habitant. We take pleasure in gathering with groups of friends at bars to enjoy some good food and drinks over some long conversation. What is a common misconception that others might have about your country? Everyone thinks we are lazy and that all we care about is our “siesta” after eating. Is your experience far from your expectations? Totally not; both my expectations have been reached. I will have an American degree, which is very beneficial in Spain and I will have enjoyed playing collegiate soccer. I love my team and teammates. Based on your recent experience, what opinion do you have of the American education system? Education here is more practical because of the many presentations and teamwork assignments. I think this develops an open minded person with an extroverted character, securing a better future. What is a popular saying that is often used in your country? “Dime con quien andas, y te diré quien eres.” This literally means, “tell me who you’re with, and I’ll tell you who you are.” CREAM 43

Things you should know about

Yerma

LTGI’s

Laredo Theater Guild International (LTGI) presents the second work in Federico Garcîa Lorca’s tragic trilogy, Yerma. Lorca’s works were so controversial and representative of the existing political climate, that they were banned four decades after his death. Yerma will be directed by LTGI Artistic Director Marco Gonzalez and produced by Celina T. Oliveira.

1

LTGI is proud to present its first purely Spanish production, spoken in traditional Andalucían Spanish.

2

Yerma was written by the Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca in 1934, and was later premiered that same year.

3

Although the play is traditionally set in the early 20th Century, this production will depict a contemporary setting, making it more relatable to modern audiences.

4

Yerma is the second play LTGI has produced from Lorca’s “rural trilogy” which includes Bodas de Sangre (1933) and La Casa de Bernarda Alba (1936).

5

Yerma is the name of the play’s main character which also translates to “barren” in Spanish.

6

Social conventions are prevalent throughout. The main character is a young farmer’s wife struggling to conceive a child. As tensions flare in the marriage, the local villagers gossip and judge Yerma’s defiant nature.

7

Lead actress, Casandra Canales (Yerma) is returning to the stage after last starring in LTGI’s The 39 Steps in 2014. She also starred as “La Novia” in Bodas de Sangre in 2012.

8

Although he is not new to the stage, this will be native Nuevo Laredo actor Cristóbal Enríquez Ibarra’s first production with LTGI.

9

The production will feature an original score composed and played live by Miguel Saito and Billy Thatcher.

10

Director Marco Gonzalez’s vision incorporates fantastical and surreal elements in conjunction with the traditional symbolism that Lorca intended. In short, the audience is in for an amazing ride!

The show will run at the TAMIU Center for Fine and Performing Arts Theater on January 11-14 and 18-21, 2018

San Antonio, TX | Cream City Magazine

Their first touristic venture to New Orleans fascinated David Garcia and Rick Gipprich Jr. enough that they now continuously participate in a love affair with the city, its people, its history, and its spirit. The established love and loyalty from clients has allowed them to expand into retail floral and gifts while newly welcoming a French Creole and Mexican culture fusion.Today, they are thrilled to announce the concept store inspired by such alliance: No. 9. This specialty shop provides atypical retail floral, specialty gourmet chocolates, and handcrafted gifts made in San Antonio and New Orleans.

David

How did the initial inspirational concept of your shop come about? New Orleans is one of my favorite cities. I travel there at least 3 times a year and have always been fascinated with the history, culture and mystery of the city. I thought a French Creole/Mexican culture clash would make an interesting combination, since Voodoo and Santeria are sisters on the spiritual spectrum. Rather than spells and potions however, we offer an array of edible treats and sultry floral design work. From who or where do you continue to collect your inspiration today? I am inspired by my mother, a local Laredo resident that has worked relentlessly to achieve a long life career. My mother was an integral part in starting my business. She inspires me to push myself to grow and pursue the passion I never knew I had: florals. How has growing up in Laredo influenced your aesthetic and design? Growing up in Laredo gave me a very direct connection with Mexican culture. I grew up visiting the markets in Nuevo Laredo and have vivid memories of the cultural decor such as lanterns, pottery etc. What particular floral trend have you mastered for your staple designs? We are well known for our pave style arrangements. Pave is a low, lush and very rich combination of premium florals and minimal greenery. What item from your shop should we all hurry to score? The most recent addition to our vase inventory: our custom made Frida Khalo vase. I 48 CREAM

Garcia

personally hand sculpted her out of clay and worked with a ceramicist out of Uvalde that has mass produced the vases. What makes this vase a musthave is the ability of adding fresh floral to create a living floral crown. What three popular movie choices would you use to describe No. 9? Harry Potter, The Book of Life, and Interview with the Vampire. Throughout your servicing career, has there been any particular occasions that have become memorable highlights? While No.9 is our new endeavor, I also own Statue of Design which focuses on wedding and event floral design. I have had the privilege of designing florals for high profile politicians like Hillary Clinton, to celebrities like Eva Longoria and most recently, Aerosmith’s very own Steven Tyler. If given the option to undertake or venture into another profession, what would that profession be? I am fortunate to have found a career in flora/retail that suits my personality, my curiosity and my artistry. If I pursued another profession, I think that it would be in product development. I have had a great time designing small batch products to carry in my retail shop over the last year. I can easily see that graduating into expanding my products nationwide.

enjoy painting more than anything because it provides me with a creative outlet to share my vision, ideas and feelings. With art, I am able to express raw emotions through every brushstroke. The palette I am typically inclined to use is very colorful. Often, people confess they become entertained by the cheerfulness my paintings communicate and transmit. I started painting portraits of dogs thanks to my own muse Lola. She, half frenchie and half pug, is my biggest inspiration. I started this series with her in mind and decided to accomplish it with oil-based paint. Oil is my weakness and in my opinion, the best media since it flows with you, gives you great texture and a chance to change your mind. You can never go wrong with oils. Kennia Alexandra López

What’s the buzz with the new iPhone X? The not so plain, but simple fact that it literally only works with face recognition! The crazy futuristic technology might in fact be too soon for its time, cueing its launch a year early. The raveworthy face recognition feature has rendered the home button obsolete. With just looking at the bottom of the screen, all of your open apps will be showcased. The phone even lowers the ringer volume as soon as it detects your face! What’s the point of an attention-seeking ring if you are presently using your phone? The iPhone X sent the Apple’s stock price to its record high on the first week of pre-order sales! It’s no surprise that Apple continues to break through technology barriers and keep iPhone users upgrading to the newest “it” gadgets of our time.

Pets&People | Cream City Magazine

Tania Chaires & Romeo What type of pet do you own? English Bulldog. What’s the name of your pet? Romeo, he is 11 months old and I’ve had him for 9 months. When and how did this breed spark your interest? I would see them often at the park and in pictures of mutual friends. I think they are such a beautiful species and loving animals. What does your pet mean to you? Romeo is very special to me and my family. It has been a while since there was a pet in the household and he brings so much joy! He is a member of our own family. Do you treat your pet with any special care? He is well taken care of everyday. He receives his daily walks, stays inside the house or near cool areas when he plays outside and gets his special baths at least twice a week. What is yours and Romeo’s favorite activity? Walking him around the neighborhood or going for car rides. Is your pet trained? How difficult was it to train him? Yes, it took a while for him to get the hang of things but he was quick to pick up on it. What are some of your favorite anecdotes with your pet? Romeo is one to love attention. People have taken pictures and selfies with him at the park or at Petco. He also loves to play with children! He will lay there and expect the belly rubs that he loves so much. He is pretty much a big baby with a big heart! Could you give us some tips for when choosing a pet? I would say choose a pet you have had an interest in for a while, do some research as to what kind of pets they make and if they fit what you are looking for. What do you think about people who mistreat animals? I think it’s a cruel act, of course. If people are not animal lovers then they should not own a pet in the first place or just avoid animals in general. No harm needs to be done. If you were an animal, which would you be and why? I would have to say an eagle. They look peaceful soaring in the sky.
