design & production publisher our 16th edition coincides with the ending of 2012, a year filled with satisfactions, challenges, and learning. This year also marked our second anniversary, which was attained after many hours of work, effort, and dedication by a committed team whose goal is to create the best magazine in town. I am very proud to share with you this vision that becomes reality with every single page. I thank every person whom we met in issue after issue; their stories enriched ours with life lessons and inspiration. To assemble this publication involves more than just paper, printing, photography and design, computers or software. This magazine is done with passion, in my opinion, one of the main ingredients to achieve objectives. Passion drives Cream and leads it to make headway with a style that distinguishes it from the rest. I want to reiterate my thanks to my creative team; day after day we share that passionate spirit that makes us try harder and go further. I am grateful to all our sponsors for believing in us and especially our readers who make Cream…#1.

ANSELMO “CHEMO” CASTRO, JR. A lifelong career of service.

DIANA ROSSELL JUÁREZ Committed to a cause and hopeful for a cure.

MARITZA YANETTE LÓPEZ ROJAS Working to make dreams come true.

Meet three dynamic achievers who contribute to the development of both Laredos. They are flying high on Cream’s radar.

DIANA ROSSELL JUÁREZ

American Cancer Society / Community Manager, Health Initiatives

A health care organization, the American Cancer Society, not only helps people with cancer, but it has taught me to value every day on this earth living, loving, and laughing. My career with ACS began nine years ago, but prior to that I had volunteered for it in my previous job. As a volunteer, I saw the lack of knowledge and aid that was available to the patients and families facing such a life- changing experience. I knew I could make a difference. At the time there were limited resources including program and services. However, within a year we grew in programs and funding. I never imagined working for an association so committed to helping those afflicted with cancer through their journey. Throughout the years, I have met families from different walks of lives, and they have, in one way or another, impacted my views in life. The trust and support of my wonderful family has been my inspiration. With their love and encouragement, I am able to be successful in everything I do. I am blessed to have them supporting not only my job, but the other nonprofit organization that I am involved with.

I like to make things happen and surround myself with people who feel the same way. I am a perfectionist. It’s a great feeling when you are able to help someone in need who has no one to turn to for assistance. I feel I still have a lot to accomplish; God has given me a second chance in life. My career gives me peace of mind with the hope that one day cancer will be considered a chronic disease. MARITZA YANETTE LÓPEZ ROJAS

Event Coordinador for Soñar Despierto Nuevo Laredo

In October 2011, I was invited to participate in Soñar Despierto Nuevo Laredo, an organization engendered by young people in Mexico that has successfully extended into other countries. Our focus is to foster solidarity and generosity in order to help needy children so they can grow with better opportunities. My participation in this endeavor is now part of my life. Every day, along with the other members in our team, we strive to realize our dream of helping and reaching more kids. I am the event coordinator in Nuevo Laredo; planning for each affair is always an adventure. Making sure that every single detail is taken care of has taught me that anything is possible when you put your best effort into it. It’s important to let the youngsters of our city know that despite the bad circumstances that may afflict us at the moment, we can still be happy. We must teach them to enjoy life and give them reasons to look forward to a fulfilling future.

My parents taught me the beauty of altruism since I was a little girl. They have been part of another philanthropic organization for over twenty years. Without their example, I would not have been able to contribute as I have. I also try to live by the example set by Mother Teresa whose mission was so awe-inspiring.

I believe we have to dream big. We must be willing to surpass our own expectations. Soñar Despierto has brought me satisfactions as well as teachings. I invite people to value and be thankful for what they have. I invite them to participate within their own community and share their joy with others.

ANSELMO “CHEMO” CASTRO, JR.

Senior Vice President, International Bank of Commerce

Next March, I will be celebrating my 32nd anniversary working with IBC, a place that has given me lifelong friendships, stability, and peace of mind. And to think that I was only going to stay for six months! I was hired in 1981 by Mr. Guillermo R. García, whom I still have the pleasure of working with, to input loans into the installment loan processing area. It was my first full-time job, and I enjoyed learning the business component of the bank and, of course, meeting people. I found my niche. Since then, I have been exposed and worked in various divisions at a corporate level. My career challenges me and provides me the ability to share a vision. I consider myself helpful and resourceful. I love giving back to my community. My employer is incredibly generous and helps financially, but providing manpower to volunteer at fundraisers and community events sometimes means so much more. That is why remaining active in organizations near and dear to my heart gives me pleasure. Seeing dreams fulfilled inspires me as does having faith in God, who never leaves our side. I have deep admiration for my mother; she is one of the smartest people I know. I also feel that teachers are to be commended for their contributions. They have a profound influence on their students, and then again, as adults, we should never stop learning. Laredoans need to back the efforts of our city and county officials and our chamber of commerce to promote business and tourism in our unique bi-cultural city.

I believe strongly that what you do for yourself dies with you, but what you do for others lives on forever.

BY ELYSSA CANALES

Since 1984, Canadian entertainment company Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun) has been captivating audiences with a spectacular mix of circus acts and street entertainment.

each spectacle is a fusion of daring techniques and styles collected from around the world creatively composed with its own storyline and an ever evolving theme. This time, “Circus of the Sun” will shine its rays of light upon us at the Laredo Entertainment Arena on January 29-31, 2013 with the presentation of the latest show Quidam. If you have comfortably positioned yourself under a rock for the last decade or two, you might have failed to catch word of the mystique behind Cirque du Soleil. Or if you were anything like me, who last year dreadfully missed the presentation then spent an entire morning in a trance of utter regret streaming show after show on YouTube, you might conclude that we definitely missed out! Never fret, Creamers, we still have time to get ready for another jaw-dropping production. There is reason to all the hype; Cirque du Soleil is our gateway to a realm of fantasy created by individuals who possess unbelievable capabilities and are paramount at what they do. Recently, I had the chance to meet two of the main characters of Quidam, Mark Ward and Alessandra González. With 14 years of experience under his belt, Mark, who plays John the ringmaster, says Quidam is unlike any previous act. “It’s as if you were attending a gymnastics, music, theatre, and sports competition all in one.” Quidam is crafted by

52 artists representing countries from all over the globe with the unified purpose of delivering a great performance that touches and evokes emotion. Alessandra a native of Mexico City who plays Zoe and has been with Cirque for the last 2 years excitedly says, “It just never get old!” It’s difficult to dismiss the enthusiasm and fervor in her voice as she describes the sentiment, the build up, and the disbelief that her dreams are presently coming true. She portrays a young girl who undergoes alienation and is constantly ignored by her parents. It is said every mind is a world unto itself, for Zoe it becomes an escape from solitude as she dreams up the whimsical Quidam. Alessandra continues to describe the action as strong and beautiful, two words that have never strayed far from the essence of Cirque du Soleil. Quidam is a narrative of theatrical enchantment that sweeps you into the flights of fancy of a young girl. It’s a story for the ages that can be appreciated on so many levels: acrobatic feats, theatre, and thrills. Critics have given amazing reviews about this magnificent display of artistry. In a world where little is left to the imagination, this January allow yourself to reawaken the depths of your mind. Experience the wonders of Cirque du Soleil; they beckon an audience with a young heart and creative spirit. cream dec / jan 2013

Transformation. Growth. Renewal. Sound challenging? If change is inevitable, why are we so reluctant to embrace it? In reality, making any kind of adjustment can be intimidating if the right intention is not behind it. But what if the alteration has to do with a fitter, stronger, healthier you? And what if exercise is the key to your new image? Ten of Cream’s best expert friends on the matter discern for you, our readers, the many available forms that can ultimately lead to a better life—chock-full of inner and outer beauty and health. Part of the secret to achieving success in any of them is to dive in…and welcome the challenge. But do it. You can pace yourself. You may cheat a little. In the end you will have no one to thank but you.

is a brand of training methodology involving constantly varied, functional activities executed at high intensity using a combination of weightlifting, gymnastics, running, rowing, and pretty much everything else in between. There is no routine; it’s always different. CrossFit incorporates gymnastic and Olympic-lifting movements. When done correctly, it will teach you to use three energy pathways— phosphagen, glycolytic, oxidative. Most fitness programs don’t pay attention to that. These are all equally important in the development of a truly fit and healthy person. The athlete is also exposed to certain neurological and physical skills parameters. For example, the neurological training will focus on developing balance, coordination, agility, and accuracy. The physical aspect centers on expanding strength, flexibility, endurance, and stamina. All these features cultivate a sportsperson with more speed and power—a fitter athlete. Typically, the first exercise that is taught is the squat. Our staff will break down the action and its components so that it’s done correctly and explain its importance. During our basic classes, participants learn the essential movements, terminology, and also get a taste of the workout intensity. If the athlete is competent, then they are welcome into the regular classes. Our training staff decides whether they are ready or not. Our biggest challenge is people who aren’t really motivated to get in great shape. They are just not willing to put in the hard work and prefer a more passive approach. We welcome anyone who’s got the right mindset and wants to get serious. We can tweak the workouts to fit your ability, skill, and experience. Being totally immersed in the practice is so much better than reading about it, watching videos, or hearing stories from friends. Drop by. The community and environment will totally blow you away. Just try it. Target Exercise: Cardio, strength Benefits: Balance, coordination, agility, flexibility, strength, endurance, and stamina What you need: Regular workout clothes How often to train: Safe to do daily, but beginners may start with 3 days per week. May be combined with: This is a complete conditioning routine, but trying a new sport is always recommended. ERNESTO BENAVIDES Owner and founder of CrossFit Laredo. He established CrossFit Laredo in 2008. Education: Nuclear Medicine Science Degree from the University of the Incarnate Word

was created by alejandra arguindegui as a unique blend of the brilliant work of giants like Lotte Berk, a German ballet dancer who developed barre workouts after injuring her back, Joseph Pilates, and Iyengar Yoga. Fusion Barre is a dynamic class—fun, challenging, and appropriate for all ages. It uses the principles of isometrics, one of the quickest ways to define your muscles, and increases strength without adding bulk. It also incorporates principles of ballet, yoga, and dance to stretch and elongate the muscles for a supple and elegant body. All combined with interval training, quick bursts of intense movements that elevate your heart rate without any impact on the joints. It is safe and highly effective. It creates a lean and elongated build like a dancer’s. Anyone wishing to achieve this look would love the results. Just observe the students’ lengthened, graceful postures as they glide out of class, and you can see the confidence that is built by this discipline. The exercises are stylish and poised, and the learners feel beautiful while performing them. Fusion Barre has a strong emphasis on alignment, core strength, and awareness leading the pupil to recognize what is safe and unsafe for their body. It also eliminates all the jumping and

impact that leads to many injuries. The instructors have a keen eye for observing and keeping students safe as they perform their exercises. Our teachers are there to facilitate the most effective workout possible for them. They are vigilant of the student’s alignment and technique throughout the class making physical modifications if needed. Be prepared for an intense yet safe workout. Many beginners get overwhelmed in their first class because of the intensity, but if they stay with the program, they will condition quickly and begin to reap the rewards. Target Exercise: Cardiovascular, strength training, core-work, and stretching Benefits: Increases agilityoverall muscle toning and shaping. What you need: Comfortable, yet fitted workout clothes and fusion socks to grip the floor. How often to train: 3 times per week May be combined with: It is a complete workout.

trains your body and mind to develop endurance and stamina to run at your own pace from 3 miles to a full marathon (26 miles 385 yards). Although it is safe to train daily, you must start slow so your body can get used to the routine and hydrate. Some people start too fast, and they give up when they can’t keep up with the training. A typical run should begin with stretching exercises for warm-up. Proceed with a slow jog until you break a sweat then increase your pace until you feel comfortable—depending on the miles you are running you can either increase or slow down your pace. Anyone can benefit; I have seen runners with prosthesis and know of some with pacemakers. Check with your doctor. If you are just beginning, go out and enjoy your runs; when you finally enter a local race, you will get hooked. If you’ve been running for awhile and see no improvement, change your training; you might be stuck on cruise control. Get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. It’s very easy to burn out—it happened to me. I stopped running for about 10 plus years. Now, I have been running for 4 years and have enjoyed every mile. Listen to your body and be patient.

is a colombian dance fitness program created by dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Pérez during the 1990s. Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements with a variety of moves derived from hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and belly dance. Squats and lunges are incorporated as part of the routine. It is not a dance class, nor do you need experience in dancing. Zumba is successful because students enjoy themselves. The Latin music introduces a dramatic change from traditional aerobics. The tempo changes from slow to moderate to fast and back again. This allows even beginners to grasp the steps and keep up. The practice is basically comprised of watching the instructor, mimicking his or her steps. There are usually 3-5 series of steps per song. Once a new song begins, new steps are introduced. Zumba is for everyone, from kids to our senior citizens and our special populations.

is a beautiful recreational sport that works every part of your body. Tennis reshapes the figure because it is a complete activity—works from head to toes. If a person practices it the right way, the player will see results after one day of practice. If you are recuperating from an injury, tennis will help you to heal faster and reduce the pain by relaxing the muscles. As with most sports, you need a reputable teacher. Look for a good quality coach to, at least, learn the basics. Don’t get disappointed in the beginning; with patience, everyone gets better. Anyone is a good candidate for tennis. Elderly people can use it as good therapy and young people can learn and commit to it. Always warm up for at least 10 minutes or stretch, run a couple of laps, and start hitting the ball very easy until the muscle feels ready to go 100 percent. Tennis is wonderful and hugely popular. I invite everybody to practice the sport. You will not be disappointed. Target Exercise: Cardiovascular Benefits: Overall physical fitness and concentration. What you need: A good racquet and proper tennis shoes. Guys should wear shorts and shirts; girls should wear tennis shirts with shorts or skirts. How often to train: It is very safe to practice daily, as long as the person is doing it right. May be combined with: Any other discipline HENRY ESTRELLA BURGOS Marketing manager and a tennis coach. is a series of poses or asanas developed many, many years ago to strengthen the body and increase flexibility so the practitioner could remain in meditation for extended periods of time. The principles of yoga are to connect mind, body and breath. In the west it has gained popularity as a way of staying fit. Yoga gives the muscles a toned and lean look. You stretch your thighs, your back, do back and forward bends, and inversions, sending blood to the heart and other organs in a gentler manner. All these postures keep your spine strong and healthy. Everyone wants to look good, but yoga goes deeper than that. It helps you become more aware of your body’s movements. Your posture improves and this new awareness also manifests in your diet, so you start paying attention to more nutritious foods. These subtle changes have positive effects in your relationships, your mood, and your actions. Another important lesson from yoga is being able to look within for happiness, tranquility, and peace. Most classes begin in a seated position; the student is asked to quiet the mind, find the breath, and begin to relax. The basic yoga exercise is, in my opinion, the Sun Salutation, which warms up the body for other poses. Yoga is a great aid for rehabilitation because it can be very gentle. It can be modified for people

with certain injuries, pregnant women, or the elderly. Hot yoga or Bikhram yoga may not be recommended for persons with certain medical conditions. Every time I talk to someone about yoga, I hear, “but I can’t even touch my toes!” and my answer is, “Exactly!” We all have to start somewhere. The benefits are countless, and I encourage readers to just get started. Beginning a practice will bring many positive changes to your life. Target Exercise: Stretching Benefits: Flexibility, concentration, good posture, toned muscles What you need: An open mind, breathable clothes, mat, a towel How often to train: Yoga can and should be done daily, but a strenuous hot yoga class is not recommended for every day. May be combined with: Yoga complements beautifully with other conditioning routines. VALERIA BARCELÓ-CASSO An instructor at Peace of Yoga Studio, she has over 10 years practicing yoga. She was certified by the Living Yoga Program in Austin.

gives you such a freedom and makes you feel like a kid again. When you’re on the bike, you forget about the daily stress accumulated with work, school, or any other personal matter. It cleanses the mind and lets you start fresh the next day. Cycling accelerates recovery from injuries, helps with blood circulation, and since it’s a non-impact sport, your bones will stay healthy and strong. Of course, that is if you have a proper bike. Clipless pedals keep your feet attached, which will allow you to pedal in circles and let you take advantage of the full stroke. It will make you more efficient and faster. If you’re new to cycling, you definitely want to start slow, with light intensity. The time you have available to train per day also plays a role. A beginner's week might look something like 6-7 hours per week. If you’re new to it, don’t expect to see results quickly. Ask questions, join a club, and visit your local bike shops; they will help out. It’s not just about getting on your bike every day and pedaling till you can’t anymore. If you’re interested in racing, then a coach with a good racing background will help out, too. Cycling training teaches you to be focused, persistent, and always on track for your

goals, whether it’s to win a local race, a State Championship, or lose 20 pounds. This can be transferred into to you personal life and help you achieve your life goals and dreams. Target Exercise: Cardiovascular Benefits: Stamina, overall fitness What you need: Shorts with a good chamois to protect body and cycling shoes. How often to train: Exercising daily is not recommended; even the top pro riders have a day off during the week. May be combined with: Weight training 2-3 months before you begin cycling is beneficial for strengthening tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Once you’re in the cycling program, one-day visits to the gym will keep you strong throughout the year. JORGE MUÑÓZ GARNICA He is a manager and a USA Cycling Level 2 certified coach at www.primecoaching-jm.com.

is a combination of contemporary dance and gymnastics performed around a vertical pole in flowing, graceful movements using your own body weight for resistance. There are many misconceptions about pole fitness; our class has no connection to erotic pole dancing. The classes are divided by levels. Beginners: Levels 1 & 2, Intermediate Levels 3 & 4, Advanced Levels 5, 6, & 7. Each level is taught the vocabulary of the moves, pole techniques with proper body and hand positioning, and safety considerations for spins, holds, transitions, and inversions. You’ll be amazed at the variety of exercises you can do with a pole, which are similar to exercises you might do in the gym. From chin-ups to crunches, to working arms and abs, and climbing to swan holds for your legs and derrière. Students get to target muscles they don’t usually exert with regular workouts or equipment. Anybody can learn and benefit from this unique technique regardless of age, body shape, or weight; no previous experience or abilities are required. It can be customized to the students needs. An impediment to hold the pole would be the only barrier. Pole fitness tones muscles, but because so many of the exercises lift the body onto the pole, the upper body and core muscles are mainly beautifully defined. To lift the body and extend it into various positions requires the abdominals to support a great deal of the weight; therefore, biceps, triceps, deltoids and upper and lower back will hold the body stable during all of these movements leading them to gain more definition. We manage a workout plan that includes aerial yoga, and stall bars; these classes prepare the body to perform at its best in the pole classes. Don’t hesitate; you’ll fall in love with it. Target Exercise: Cardiovascular and strength training Benefits: Flexibility, coordination, posture, upper body and core strength, muscle tone What you need: Beginners need comfortable workout clothing; as you advance, you need your skin to grip so short and tank-tops work great. How often to train: Beginners especially should leave at least a day between sessions to allow the muscles to recuperate. May be combined with: You can obtain the best results by combining it with yoga, Pilates, or aerial dancing. JANET DABDOUB Instructor at AcroFitness with 9 years of Ballet, 5 years in Gymnastics, 3 years Practicing Pole Fitness. is a very gentle and effective workout that enables you to strengthen, shape, stretch, and relax. In a very short time, it improves posture and physical and mental well-being. It focuses primarily on what Joseph Pilates called the ‘’powerhouse’’ which is the area around the middle of your body. Pilates is a very mindful activity. In every movement, you’re trying to activate the powerhouse using your abdominal wall to protect your back. You’re also working the body very evenly and symmetrically. Dancers appreciate Pilates because it offers more possibilities to stabilize and centralize. Athletes use it as a supplement to their regular training. And people who work for hours at a desk can reduce muscle tension. The first exercise in Pilates is “The Hundred.” Lie on your back, bend knees into your chest, bring forehead to your knees, extend legs out to 90 degrees, reach arms long by your side. Vigorously pump your arms while inhaling for 5 counts and exhaling for 5 counts. Repeat until you have counted up to 100. The first stage will be the most difficult; you will note that you have an area of weakness that you need to work on. Do what you can, go as far as you can, and do the best you can. As you continue, you discover that you can physically transform yourself. Pilates will help you stay young, fit, and full of vitality. As Joe himself once said. “With body, mind, and spirit functioning perfectly as a coordinated whole, what else could

is a korean martial art that is characterized by the use of only the hands and the feet. The word taekwondo translates into “the way of the hand and foot.” This discipline strengthens the mind and body through increased coordination and restraint. It also emphasizes values inside and outside of class. Taekwondo is recognized globally and is an official Olympic sport. The ethics of this martial art are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and positive spirit. Respect and obedience imply courtesy. Honesty and loyalty imply integrity. To persist in an endeavor and dedication imply perseverance. Patience and discipline imply self-control. Courage and inner strength imply positive spirit. Taekwondo is very energetic and provides allround capability. Students perform aerobic moves that improve physical condition as well as exercises to increase vigor, flexibility and speed, while it also helps to release stress. They begin to notice the effects in their lives as they gain physical ability, build confidence, develop discipline, and increased self-will. Workouts are optimistic, inspirational, and also designed with a little bit of fun. Training is extensive, including corporal health, combat techniques, self-defense and forms, so students never go through a boring workout. A proper warm-up will prepare the body for instruction and will help prevent common injuries. At the same time, a cool down period after practicing is important. The Greatest Gift I admit it. I enjoy professional wrestling. I enjoy it so much that I dressed up as CM Punk for Halloween last year and I didn’t care if onlookers gagged at the sight of a hairy man wearing wrestling trunks in public. I also appreciate Billie Holiday and Chet Baker. Most say it’s boring, but their music soothes me, and I usually pair up their tunes with a good scotch. Occasionally, I wear suspenders and a fedora (it covers up my bald head pretty well). People make fun of the antiquated look, but I love it. The common denominator that these choices share is the fact that they all make me happy.

I

n october of last year, i wrote about fear and why we should battle it. Observing those around me, it startled me how many are afraid of being happy. It may not be very clearly displayed, but there is a population of individuals who avoids doing things they want to do for fear of judgment, ostracism, or plain, old-fashioned criticism. They become prisoners of their own desires and reluctantly make choices that they think will be the accepted standard of society. What a selfdeprecating waste of time.

I embraced this self-given gift to the fullest. It may not have been professionally wrapped, but I gave myself something that nobody is ever going to be able to give me. The holidays are here. If you’re anything like me, you began buying Christmas presents months ago (take that, out-of-town shopping mall parking space hoggers). We spend a lot of time, energy, and money making sure we cover every base and cross off each name on our list. In essence, we are all a bunch of modern-day Santa Clauses just trying to make sure that nobody is left out.

I understand whole-heartedly that sometimes we must do things that don’t exactly coincide with our pipe dreams. Yes, life is full However, there is somebody that is usually left out. It is the author of sacrifices. o you know what it means when holidays are around the corner? They are the perfect excuse to be a walking disco ball—minus the ball. If you’re like me, then you’re probably dying to wear that fully covered in sequins dress that took days (or weeks) to hunt down. Yes, you’ve dreamed it, planned around it, saved, and maybe even cried for it, but, face it, you’ll most probably wear it only one night. So why wait for the anticipated party to shine?

I’M ALL FOR WEARING SEQUINS EVERYDAY; HERE’S HOW TO DO IT.

To sport this trend during the day, it’s important to keep it casual, accessories worn to a minimum and paired with neutral colors. I picked three separates and created outfits around them. For the first look, I chose black sequin leggings, my never failing t-shirt, and an oversized knit sweater with flats. Secondly, a sequin skirt, which in my opinion should always be handy in the closet, is worn with a tucked-in “crème de la crème” (no pun intended) sweatshirt and a statement necklace. For the last ensemble: a sequin blazer is worn with with a structured white peplum top and boyfriend jeans. Pairing with the unexpected makes it more effortless-looking because sequins are bold and tricky; it is always better to appear a bit imperfect to avoid being overdressed. If separate pieces are too much, keep up with the trend by wearing glitter on accents like shoes, handbags, or the famous oxford collar—that can brighten-up any outfit. We only reserve the glitter for special occasions or nights out thinking that they are more appropriate then, but let’s dust those sequins and allow them to see the light of day. I guarantee that they’ll sparkle even better. BY MICHELLE COOK GUTIÉRREZ

the city of love, fashion and tourism. Seventy-nine million tourists, to be exact, visit the French capital every paris Paris: year to pose in front of the exact same famous landmark slash paintings and take pictures for Instagram. These include poorly lit pictures of the Mona Lisa through a crowd of a hundred people, terribly framed shots of a person standing at the base of the Eiffel tower, and the occasional look-at-me-drinking-coffee-and-wearing-a-beret-in-France-LOL pic. We are all guilty, but who is to blame? When did we forget to personalize experiences and make them unique? Once upon a renaissance, Paris was a mecca for painters, fashion designers, troubadours, and other artists. This was the home of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Louis Vuitton. Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí would paint a lot there, too. Paris is more than just a destination. It is a place that envelops every cell of your body with its rich history, romanticism, and bohemian essence. If you plan to go to Paris, try to make the experience as unique as possible. To begin with, try making connections with the local people inquiring about Eurovision, learning basic French, and always asking yourself: What would Blair Waldorf do?

ryan gosling

Divine perfection takes human form in Ryan Gosling. If pop culture were Entertainment Weekly, he would always be on the cover. Ryan is the Mufasa of our Pride Rock, the brightest star in our Milky Way, and the cream inside a double-stuffed Oreo cookie. For that and many other reasons, everyone is a little bit in love with Ryan Gosling. Don’t feel guilty, though. It is not our fault we get a more attractive version of him every three or four months. He played Lover of the Universe in The Notebook, a kinky blow-up-doll-loving pervert in Lars and the Real Girl, a daring Casanova in Crazy, Stupid Love, and a total jerk in Blue Valentine. Can you say eclectic and cutting-edge? Yes, yes you can. Everything is possible with a little bit of Ryan Gosling. The Mickey Mouse Club alumnus is currently working alongside Natalie Portman on an Untitled Terrence Malick Project centered on the music scene in Austin. When the media announced that Ryan was working in the Texan capital, gaggles of crazy fans dropped their daily responsibilities to go Ryan-hunting. He probably thinks Texas can’t deal with celebrity culture now. Thanks a lot, creepers! 44

pixie haircut

If Hamlet were a girl, he wouldn’t be wasting any time pondering whether “to be or not to be.” There are more important things out there, like deciding whether to get a pixie haircut. According to fake polls, large percentages of women constantly wonder if pixie cuts are the best look for them. Unfortunately, this can only go two different ways. In the best-case scenario, you may end up looking like Emma Watson, Halle Berry, or Ellen DeGeneres. This usually works when your face is proportional, when every hair that doesn’t belong on your face is waxed off, or when you have a lot of money to accessorize. On the other side of the spectrum, you could end up looking like your abuelita, Paquita la del Barrio, or Justin Bieber. Don’t fear! Here is a list of self-reflecting questions to help you make an educated decision. 1. Have I tried all possible options for long hair (such as ombre, layers, and undercuts)? 2. Is my hair healthy enough to donate? 3. In a scale from Mother Teresa to Britney Spears circa 2007, how much would I freak out if this doesn’t work out? Think critically, but remember that hair always grows back.

leather

There are only three types of people in this world: those who drop a few Benjamins on genuine leather, those who adore faux everything, and those who would give their own flesh to save a few Dalmatians from Cruella De Vil’s malevolent plans for ultimate fabulosity. But let’s all face the facts and accept that leather, genuine and faux, has become a staple in contemporary western fashion. Add a couple of studs and spikes, and you could literally look like you came straight off the runway, or Hot Topic. The point is anyone who knows anything about fashion embraces leather as much as painters embrace canvases. Leather can be casual, sexy, and elegant, all at once if you want to. Leather can also be hot, uncomfortable, and inadequate if your sassy gay friend doesn’t advice you otherwise when needed. Despite this paradox, leather is timeless. Hercules, grandparents, and Donatella Versace are living proof of that. When in doubt, wear leather. It’ll give you that extra edge that will help you dominate that interview, score that number, and get you in the right mood for things, if you know what I mean. Be careful in Texas, though. Possible heat exhaustion may occur.

was an episode in the macaroons There critically acclaimed television

series Spongebob Squarepants that featured colorful hamburgers. They were called Pretty Patties and came in 21 different colors including “glow-in-the-dark” because that is also a color. It is every child’s dream to see cartoon elements, such as actual characters and props, materialize in real life in the form of a McDonald’s toy, a lunchbox or a videogame. The fact that 99 percent of all these toys are the first to go on toy box slash closet cleanses is totally irrelevant. Not too long ago, I discovered macaroons. These beautiful and mysterious baked concoctions look a lot like Spongebob’s Pretty Patties. Think of an ice cream cookie sandwich except not frozen and in various sizes and flavors other than vanilla with chocolate chips. They are soft, sweet, colorful, utterly delicious, and people go to great extents looking for these precious bougie indulgences. You may find them in extremely chic and trendy places, like Paris and Vegas, or at your occasional local pastry. Once you look, you’ll find. First times can be intimidating, so proceed with caution when you finally find them. Try chocolate first. You can never go wrong with chocolate. Or vanilla. Yum.

Suddenly, somewhere in between a mouthful of ahi and an earful of Southwest décor, the words passion and soul echoed in my head. I had begun to understand the craze and efforts behind La Reserva and the ideas it was conceived upon. ELYSSA CANALES

creambizfood CHRISTIAN CÁRDENAS La Reserva’s co-owner sits with Cream and tells us about his special reserve.

la reserva: importing spirit

BY ELYSSA CANALES

La Reserva, a restaurant hallmarked by memories, culture, and food. Sometimes in life and in business, it’s not what a place is or what they do, it’s what they decide not to do—what they restrain themselves from asserting altogether. la reserva has found success in delicately tying together the essence of nuevo laredo with all the wonders of the town’s glory days. It shelters family snapshots and traditions, original recipes charged with modern flare, and the recognizable faces of servers who waited on the generations of yesteryear and today. I was curious to know what makes La Reserva unique in a place like Laredo that arguably houses some of the best Mexican cuisine. (Spoken like a proud Laredoan and Mexican cooking enthusiast.) It was not long before I found common ground with La Reserva’s co-owner Christian Cárdenas, yet another foodie very much like me. Rest assured a foodie isn’t some farfetched, sugarcoated nickname for the sake of sparing the feelings of some pudgy food addict or food snob at that. Better said, a foodie is a person who spends a keen amount of time and energy knowing the ins and outs of a dish and its proper preparation and finds a great deal of enjoyment in top-notch ingredients. Okay, so maybe I should have stopped at food addict. But in the spirit of tasty grub, it would come as no surprise that the family behind La Reserva would deliver selections worthy of praise. First off the menu, the ahi tuna and blue crab tostadas. Christian jokes that the dish was a shared failed attempt by him and his aunt to create tuna tartare. In true connoisseur fashion, Christian spared no time in pointing out the glistening beads of oil comfortably nestled amongst the white crushed crab meat. I toyed with the idea of ignoring any recollection of common etiquette as I resisted the urge to lick the sauce, which had wandered away from my last tostada, off my finger.

And like clockwork, entrée número dos arrived, esquite—white corn, piquín pepper, cream (how fortuitous!), grated panela cheese, and a touch of lime, all served in a traditional Mexican clay pot handdelivered by a man who began waiting on tables since his youth in Nuevo Laredo and has been with Christian’s family from the time they opened their previously-owned restaurant Freedom. Don Pedro remembers his share of familial stories because he knew Christian’s grandfather, father, and now him of course. La Reserva was built and modeled on all things missed by Christian’s relatives and their twist on what they pine for from their hometown. Their goal was not only to push the culinary envelope but to create an environment reminiscent of times gone by. It doesn’t get any more authentic than this, the smell of roasting cabrito in the air while I sip my freshly squeezed lemonade with a splash of mineral water. Suddenly, somewhere in between a mouthful of ahi and an earful of Southwest décor, the words passion and soul echoed in my head. I had begun to understand the craze and efforts behind La Reserva and the ideas it was conceived upon. Their philosophy became abundantly clear; it was the notion that even in a cynical era, civility and refuge could be ingeniously found in a meal. This is what food should be like! The hope and reintroduction of the comfort and heart found in the Nuevo Laredo we once so feverishly flocked to. The spirit of La Reserva ignites a spark of familiar memory that stands with one foot in the present and the other in a past firmly rooted inside a culture exemplifying all things wonderful.

We are a product of our circumstances. Ask yourself what has life thrown at you that has transformed you. For many of us the answer comes instantaneously; we can recall when, where, and how we came to terms with our trials and tribulations. One of life’s greatest gifts is the beauty conjured through perseverance and strength. Reyli Rodríguez has arthrogryposis, a congenital disorder that has plagued the mobility in his legs since birth. Every day is a constant effort, but he is inspired by the hope that one day he will stand on his own, play with his brother, and walk freely beside his mother and father.

REILY'S HOPE BY ELYSSA CANALES

Living currently in San Antonio due to his condition, Reyli, now 7, has endured more than many of us will ever have to; nevertheless, he leads with a smile and has the courage of a lion. Don’t be fooled by his youth; this old soul carries wisdom far beyond his years. He knows that his life has not played out in its entirety and remains encouraged about his emerging future. When Cream learned about Reyli’s plight, we felt compelled to share his moving story. He has become a source of inspiration for us. We are hopeful that after reading this interview with his mom, you can also contribute to realize Reyli’s dream.

W

HAT IS ARTHROGRYRPOSIS? It is a rare congenital disorder that affects the muscles, tendons, and joints. It can affect every joint in your body, mostly on shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles. Arthrogryposis is different on each person who is diagnosed with it. WHAT IS THE CURRENT STATE OF REYLI’S CONDITION? Reyli has a severe case of joint contractions in his knee which doesn’t allow him normal range of motion. He experiences stiffness of the joints, muscles, and tendons in his knees and ankles. Reyli’s knees do not fully extend and do not fully bend due to the contractures in the knee. He wears his KAFOs, which are prosthetic braces that lock his knee in place. HOW HAS IT AFFECTED YOUR FAMILY? It has affected our family in a very positive way. We educate ourselves with all the information we need in order to answer Reyli’s questions about his condition. WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF

Finding the right doctors and therapist who are willing to go the extra mile for their patients. It has truly been a journey going in and out of town getting different opinions on Reyli’s legs. The most difficult part is when a doctor wants you to settle and accept that nothing can be done, but the most dreadful question is when my son asks me, “Will I ever be able to walk?”

THIS EXPERIENCE?

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST PART OF THIS

REILY IN HIS OWN WORDS What is your favorite thing about your mom? That she’s my mom, and she’s fun, and she loves me—she loves me a lot. Who do you look up to? God because he is my powerful Father. God made me, and I know that he will make me walk one day. What do you want people to know about your experience? I have had four surgeries. I have two more to go, and I am not giving up. People shouldn’t make fun of kids who are different because it makes us sad. They should just ask me; I will tell them what I have so they can understand, and they won’t make fun of kids like me. The mind is powerful; if you think you can do it then you will do it. I have faith that I will walk and run one day without my braces.

The best part is being chosen to be Reyli’s mother. I know that he has made me stronger, and together we have not given up on our hopes and faith in God. I’ve learned a lot from my son as he has with me. He is truly my angel from heaven; he can light up a room with his smile and courage. He never gives up, and neither will we. I’ve also learned, which is really important for any parent to take in mind, that when a doctor tells you nothing can be done, well, then you are with the wrong doctor. HOW HAS THIS EXPERIENCE HELPED THE WAY YOU SEE LIFE? I’ve learned to appreciate God’s work and creations. I was 20 years old when I had Reyli, and he completely changed my life for the best. I’ve always been a fighter, but he just made me a stronger fighter. I’ve learned that children are blessings that are sent to mothers to teach them the best of life. We all have a meaning in life, and I believe that Reyli “I’ve learned that children are was sent to me for a reason. JOURNEY?

blessings sent to mothers to teach them the best of life. We all have a meaning in life, and I believe that Reyli was sent to me for a reason.”

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY FOR

A typical day for him will be waking up a 7 a.m. to get ready for school. After school he devotes one hour to homework and reading. Then, he will see what I’ve cooked for him. Later, and ABIGAIL VILLARREAL throughout the day, he rides his scooter outside. For his legs, Reyli does daily stretches that he learned from his therapist. WHAT ARE REYLI’S FAVORITE ACTIVITIES? Play basketball with his brother. He loves for us to read him the book Precious Moments: Stories from the Bible every night before he goes to sleep.WHAT DOES REYLI WANT TO BE WHEN HE GETS OLDER? He wants to be a 1st grade teacher. WHAT WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER MOTHERS IN YOUR POSITION? As a mother we should never stop fighting for our children because if we don’t, then who will? Never look at your child’s condition as something negative because it is a blessing. Most importantly, never give up no matter the circumstance. We live in a world with advanced medicine, and don’t make your first doctor your last. Always keep looking for the next best one. Never take no for an answer; just look for the possible because nothing is impossible. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE OUR READERS TO KNOW? Thank you in advance for taking the time to know more about our son Reyli. At his young age he has taught us that no matter what obstacles life throws at you, there is always a decision within yourself to know how to face them. Every day is a choice for Reyli whether to be happy or dwell on his situation, and he chooses to be a fighter. Also, I think it is very important that we educate our children about any kind of disability in order to prevent discrimination. HOW CAN PEOPLE HELP? You can help by following him on Facebook at www.facebook.com/reylishope we also have a donation website for medical expenses on www.fundrazr.com search for Reyli’s Hope to Walk. We also have a donation account set up in Wells Fargo, account number is 1917428029 “Reyli’s Donation Fund.” REYLI?

They started off in a small container-like plastic pool with a small island and a tiny palm tree. I never thought they would grow to measure 8" in length, or that they would need a living space almost ten times bigger. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TURTLES AS PETS?
