21 APRIL 2025

Message from the Headmaster

A warm welcome back to everyone for the start of what promises to be an exciting summer term packed with events, activities and experiences that I am sure the pupils will thoroughly enjoy.

Over the Easter period, a number of our pupils participated in the ski trip to Italy to hone their skills on the slopes, whilst others travelled to Spain as part of their GCSE preparation to immerse themselves in the local culture, as well as to further develop their vocabulary and understanding of the language.

We ran 14 different GCSE subject revision courses over the break that were very well attended by pupils who are determined to achieve their very best in their exams over the coming months.

In the latter part of this week, some of our senior pupils were involved in the Careers Fair at St Teresa’s and will attend the Open-Air Cinema later this evening. Thank you to all those who have contributed to the enriching experiences of the pupils over the holiday period and again this week.

Year 10 and 11 Trip to Madrid

Mr Roberts and Mrs Green took a group of 14 Year 10 and 11 boys to Madrid during the Easter break. When we arrived, we met our amazing tour guide, Fernando. Later that day, we visited the Reina Sofía art museum where we saw a few of Picasso’s paintings, including Guernica.

On the second day, we had a Spanish lesson in a languages school, before we went to explore the Royal Palace, which was enormous and very beautiful. Later that day, we had a tapas tasting meal, with several courses of delicious food.

On the third day of our trip, we went to the Warner Brothers theme park. There were lots of great rides but our favourite was ‘The Carts of the Mine’. It was very enjoyable; however, a bee kept attacking us whilst we were on there! In the evening, we saw a traditional flamenco show and afterwards, Leo, Theo and Toby tried to recreate some of the dancing in the streets.

On the final day, we went to the famous Bernabéu stadium, the home of Real Madrid. There were lots of trophies and amazing kits to see and even buy.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable trip and we would recommend it to anyone who would like to visit Spain.

Year 11 Revision Sessions

Whilst many used the Easter Break as a time for rest and recuperation, our Year 11 used their time proactively and wisely, attending an array of revision sessions put on for them by our staff. revision sessions over the 3 weeks and it was really positive seeing so many pupils choosing to engage these sessions, providing a valuable opportunity to work with their peers and receive support from their teachers. The pupils embark on study leave in less than two weeks' time.

MathsLink

On the subject of pupils going the extra mile to develop their mathematical understanding, and support each other, our Friday lunchtime drop in is always a wonderful environment and a hive of activity. It is wonderful seeing pupils helping each other so maturely and sensitively and a privilege to see our pupils at their best.

Ski Trip to Claviere

An early start on Saturday 29th April saw the boys depart on the 2025 Cranmore Ski Trip to Claviere, Italy. We arrived in Claviere to blue skies and plenty of snow and headed straight to the ski fit in preparation for the first day’s skiing that would follow on Sunday. Tuesday evening and Wednesday brought plenty of fresh snow which enabled the boys to enjoy some powder skiing on Wednesday, followed by two days of skiing over to France. One of highlights of the trip was a rather magical skidoo trip up the mountain in pitch black, under starlit skies, arriving at La Coche restaurant for crêpes and hot chocolate.

The week finished with the ski presentation and medals. This highlighted how much each student had progressed over the week. The boys were exceptionally well behaved and represented the school with flying colours. A number of adults commented on their manners and helpfulness around the hotel, resort and even at the airports. Well done to all involved! Next year’s trip has had an unprecedented amount of interest and we are very much looking forward to the trip already!

Ski Trip to Claviere

During the final week of the Easter holidays some 10 rowers took part in a small camp at Walton Rowing Club. After much missed rowing due to the stream through the winter months, there was a lot of catchingup to do. The boys spent each afternoon doing 2 sessions with a short break in 'small boats' to improve their technique and skills. On the final afternoon, a group managed to row 'Round the Island' which is an 8km loop up to Shepperton and around some very tricky bends, then back via the Desborough Cut in Weybridge. This is quite an accomplishment for Year 9s in a quad without a cox steering; instead one of the boys did it with his foot whilst rowing. This is no mean feat at the best of times and especially impressive considering their age!

We lost one outing due to wind, but otherwise the boys got in a lot of strokes with only one capsizing (right in front of the Anglers Pub which livened up the afternoon of any onlookers!).

Well done to all who took part!

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A Reading from the Gospel of Luke

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright, the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words.

Reflection

This week we will certainly have in our thoughts and prayers Pope Francis who passed away peacefully on Monday 21st April. Over the coming weekend, the world will gather in Rome to say farewell to this beloved Pope who spoke often of the mercy and love of God. As Christians, we are called to be people of the Resurrection and, just as Christ overcame death, we too can be confident of a world beyond this one. Let us pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, and remember the wonderful things he did, said and wrote.

Prayers

We pray for the soul of Pope Francis. We thank God for his life of service and place him into the hands of the merciful father. May he be comforted and rest in the peace of your love.

We pray also for the soul of Sister Carmel who passed away over the Easter holidays. May the spirit of God who rose Christ from the grave also rise Sister Carmel to new life in heaven.

We pray for all within our school community, as we embark on a new term. May we grow closer to the risen Lord and feel His presence more and more in our lives. Lord Jesus, give us the strength to meet the various challenges we will encounter and help us to find the joy of your resurrection in unexpected places and people.

Amen
