Message from the Headmaster

This week at Cranmore has been a vibrant celebration of talent, learning, and community spirit. As the GCSE examination period comes to an end, Year 11 pupils have continued to demonstrate focus and resilience. GCSE Art pupils and their families were able to see the culmination of their hard work in a private viewing of their creative achievements. Meanwhile, the School embraced Values Week, an initiative that encouraged pupils to reflect on the core principles that shape our school and wider communities. Inspired by this year’s school value of Community, some of our Year 10 DT students voluntarily set out to create handmade blackboards for our local charity, Cherry Trees.

The musical spirit of Cranmore shone brightly with the Young Musician Finals for Years 7, 8, and 9. These events showcased the incredible dedication and artistry of our pupils, with performances that captivated and highlighted the depth of musical talent across the school. The Senior Pupil Piano Concert added another layer of sophistication to the week, giving pupils from Years 7 to 11 an opportunity to showcase their musical skills.

Sporting fixtures were in full swing, with cricket, golf, swimming, and tennis matches offering pupils the chance to demonstrate teamwork, perseverance, and pride in representing the school. The Year 8 trip to Butser Ancient Farm added a historical twist to the week, offering hands-on learning in a unique setting.

Rounding off the week, Year 10 pupils engaged in a Leadership and Service Day, giving them the opportunity to both learn skills that will support them in the future and contribute to the school community. Cranmore hosted more than 170 Year 9 pupils from across the Effingham Schools Trust to enjoy a creative experience during the One Film Day, blending storytelling with technical skills.

This week has truly embodied the Cranmore ethos of offering across a broad curriculum enriched with co curricular activities.

CCF Flying Experience at RAF Benson

On Thursday, we had the brilliant opportunity to go flying at RAF Benson with the Combined Cadet Force. The four of us each were able to fly in turn in Grob Tutors with experienced RAF pilots. At times, we were allowed to fly the planes ourselves which was truly amazing. The pilots also performed some aerobatics such as banking (steep turns), loop-the-loops and barrel rolls. The pilots were friendly and supportive during the flights. For people who have never flown in such conditions, it was the experience of a lifetime.

We would not have been able to do this without the combined efforts of the Cadet Force and the staff who have opened up many brilliant opportunities to us, and for this we want to say a very big thank you to all who were involved and helped.

Piano Concert

I must congratulate those fine young pianists who performed so brilliantly in the Senior Piano Concert. Our beautiful Steinway was played with such sensitivity and style. I know that the members of the audience were very impressed. Bravo!

On Thursday 12th June, Year 7 travelled to the Bridge Theatre in London to enjoy a spectacular performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. The boys enjoyed lunch in the sunshine by Tower Bridge before watching the production in a packed theatre. They have been studying the play this term and enjoyed the opportunity of seeing it brought to life in such an imaginative and contemporary way.

Year 10 Service and Leadership Initiative

Year 10 students had a fantastic opportunity this Wednesday to give back to the school community and experience leadership roles. There was a wide variety of roles ranging from caretaking the school grounds to working in the finance office. This allowed students to enjoy activities suited to their interests and hobbies. These roles not only helped them to explore future options in life but also provided a great insight into what happens during the school day.

One role involved constructing the pamphlet that parents would read during the school play “Shrek”. Another role allowed a student to experience a day in the life of a headmaster. Another excellent role incorporated students working with the finance team. These roles gave students an idea of the dedication, responsibility, and detail required for every one of these jobs. The pupils working with the drama department were described as “brilliant” and were able to “demonstrate techniques” whilst being very “engaging”. Miss Bayley complimented those students who helped to teach the younger students in the geography department.

Some students were selected to help teach and guide the younger years in subjects that they enjoy, for example two students coaching cricket to the younger years. This allowed students to cooperate with staff and younger pupils, enhancing the sense of community within the school and allowing older pupils to bond with others.

Overall, it was a brilliant day for the Year 10 students and a very valuable and insightful experience for both the younger pupils and older students.

Framing Kindness: Pupils Create for Cherry Trees

Every Wednesday throughout the year, a dedicated group of Year 10 pupils: Zac D-B, Daniel H, Ben M, and Olly V -W, have been attending DT Club with a mission: to use their skills for a greater good. Inspired by this year’s school value of Community, the pupils voluntarily set out to create handmade blackboards for Cherry Trees, a wonderful charity that provides home-from-home respite care for children and young people with complex disabilities.

Working closely with Mr Overton, our talented Design and Technology technician, and supported by Mr McGhee, the team designed and built two beautiful blackboard frames. In a further act of generosity, Mr Overton also crafted a third frame, which has also been donated to the charity.

This project highlights the power of giving back, showing that even small acts of kindness and creativity can have a meaningful impact. By supporting organisations like Cherry Trees, we strengthen the bonds of our community and show the true value of teamwork, empathy and service.

Well done to all involved!

Mr McGhee

Congratulations to our two U14 cricket teams who both won against Ewell Castle on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, seven U13 teams played against Downsend. This was followed by a superb match for our U15s against Reeds on the Henderson.

Congratulations to our U13 golfers who beat Downsend on Monday on our very own Crangusta. Year 7 and Year 8 pupils continue with their 5-week golf block in PE.

Theo L (Year 10) ran at the Surrey Schools Athletics County Finals on Saturday. Theo ran a tactical heat in the 800m and took the win on the line to get one of the auto qualifying spots in the final. He ran really well in the final and got silver just losing first place to a second year intermediate boy. The previous Wednesday, Theo participated in the BMC event held at Loughborough Uni. He got a time of 1:58.91 and finally broke through that 2:00 time he’s been aiming for. Well done, Theo.

St Teresa's Aquathlon

On Tuesday, pupils from Cranmore participated in an Aquathlon event at St Teresa's. An aquathlon event is a swim event into a distance run as a continuous race. Pupils have to negotiate a transition area once exiting the pool into a cross-country run. Against strong competition with other local schools in attendance, we successfully placed in podium positions across a number of age groups. Well done to all the boys involved in a great event. A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A Reading from the Book of Proverbs

The Wisdom of God cries aloud:

The Lord created me when his purpose first unfolded, before the oldest of his works. From everlasting I was firmly set, from the beginning, before earth came into being. The deep was not, when I was born, there were no springs to gush with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I came to birth; before he made the earth, the countryside, or the first grains of the world’s dust. When he fixed the heavens firm, I was there, when he drew a ring on the surface of the deep.

Reflection

Our value for this year across the Trust is Community. To be unified, to live in unity with one another is so very important. God of course is perfect unity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We too bear the image of God. We were made for unity and find our happiness when we are unified one with another. Our Christian journey is therefore a journey towards unity: unity with God and unity with one another. In a world that seems ever more fractured by war, let us be people of unity.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, who prayed that we might all be one, we pray to you for the unity of Christians, according to your will, according to your means. May your Spirit enable us to experience the suffering caused by division, to see our sin and to hope beyond all hope.

Amen

"The ultimate test of your greatness is the way you treat every human being." ~ Pope John Paul II
