Message from the Head of Prep

This Sunday marks the start of Advent. With the season of preparation and festive cheer upon us, it is with great excitement that we look forward to our Nativities and Carol Services over the coming weeks. The children have been busy learning their lines and hymns for what promises to be a heart-warming spectacle.

During the week we hosted RGS Guildford in a swimming gala where our squad showed real dedication and turned in some great performances. Our rugby fixtures continue aplenty with a number of great results against tough competition. It is also pleasing to note that we have been selected as one of the top 50 schools in the country for cricket by the Cricketer Magazine.

Saint Andrew’s Day is celebrated tomorrow and, in honour of the school’s patron saint, we took time this morning in assembly to reflect on his life. The saltire that adorns every child’s blazer reminds us of some of his saintly qualities: strength, hope and curiosity.

Looking ahead, we wish the best of luck to our Lower Prep Chamber Choir who will be contributing their beautiful voices to a local church service on Sunday.

The Upper Prep Reading Challenge

This year’s Reading Challenge is now running and many pupils have signed up, which is wonderful! This year’s books were all published in 2024 and cover a wide range of genres, from action and adventure to prehistoric life. This challenge is suitable for pupils aged 9 and above. Certificates will be awarded for pupils who read three or more of the books. Those pupils who manage to read all five will be invited to vote for their favourite and take part in a special celebration in the summer. If your child would like to join the challenge, they should ask about it during their library lesson.

EYFS Dinosaur Workshops

All of our EYFS pupils enjoyed dinosaur workshops this week. They were thrilled to learn about the different types of dinosaurs through story-telling and creative activities including making their own dinosaur fossils.

A Letter from Sir David Attenborough

Thomas B (Year 1) shared some very exciting news in Prep Assembly last week. He received a letter in the mail from Sir David Attenborough! Thomas had written to Sir David to say how much he loved animals and watching his nature programmes. He also included a picture of the coral reef, which was inspired by Year 1’s topic on Oceans last half term. We know Thomas will treasure this letter as he gets older. Well done, Thomas!

Last Friday, Alex Yu's mummy visited the Year 2 pupils to share some fascinating facts all about the Terracotta Army and the Great Wall of China.

She also taught us some Mandarin and answered lots of our questions! We loved learning more about China.

Year

As well as attending the EYFS STEM workshop about Dinosaurs this week, the Nursery children went over to Forest School where they enjoyed using their senses to create potions. The highlight of their week was decorating our Christmas tree and engaging in imaginary play in our very own Santa's workshop.

Cricket Recognition

Cranmore was honoured to be chosen as one of the top 50 Schools in the country for Cricket by the Cricketer Magazine’s Good Schools Guide. The selection was based upon our provision of the sport, opportunities to represent the school in fixtures and our outstanding facilities. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the hard work and commitment from staff, pupils and parents. Well done, everyone!

The rugby season is in full swing, with every training session and after-school practice dedicated to developing our pupils' skills and teamwork. This week, Cranmore Prep teams faced tough competition in matches against Feltonfleet, St Paul's, and Parkside. Each game provided valuable opportunities for growth, pushing the players to sharpen their techniques, improve their tactical awareness, and enhance their understanding of the game. We are proud of their progress and the effort they have put in throughout the week.

Also this week a swimming gala took place against RGS Guildford.

This Week

This week we saw the celebration of Thanksgiving, an annual secular feast, ostensibly celebrated in America, but with increasing resonances across the globe. Most of us will be familiar with the traditional account of how a group of persecuted individuals, known as the Pilgrim Fathers, left England on the Mayflower and other ships, and travelled to the New World - what we now know as the USA - in search of religious freedom and new, unknown opportunities. Following their arrival in 1620, and after a perilous journey on which many died, they then faced challenges of weather, famine, disease and strained relationships with the indigenous population. However, after the hardest of winters, where the new colony continued to mourn the loss of many members, the group, supported now by compassionate original inhabitants, gather to give thanks, with a meal of local fare. And so the tradition of Thanksgiving arose.

We have a local link to this foundation story with one of the original travellers on the Mayflower being William Mullins, who lived in Dorking and whose house, on West Street, now a delightful café, stands to this day.

It is clear that the origins of Thanksgiving are contested; however, what is not contested is that those earlier settlers’ immediate response upon their arrival was to stop and give thanks to God. This, more than any other, is surely the point of this feast. It serves as a timely reminder that all too often we take God’s free gifts for granted. Perhaps this week we can take time to give thanks for what we have received and join in with the spirit of the original Thanksgiving, wherever that may have been.
