Reading in a den at Forest School in Book Week Dear Parents We have enjoyed a marvellous programme of activities for Book Week.

Certainly, the “Bake-Off” competition proved to be very popular and culminated in a superb display which highlighted the children’s exceptional imagination and creativity.

The Wind Band had a really great time performing at Charterhouse whilst our golfers relished the challenge of the tournament hosted by Whitgift School.

Learning languages has always been important at Cranmore. We teach French, Spanish, Mandarin, Latin and Greek. Therefore, it was entirely fitting that we celebrated European Day of Languages, which included a visit by the founder of Linguascope, a powerful on-line resource to support a diverse range of languages.

Form 5 head off on their residential visit today which is sure to be a real adventure.

News from the Nursery The children in Nursery are really enjoying Book Week. Mrs Williams set up a lovely role-play library and the children are taking it in turns to be the librarian, helping ‘visitors’ to choose a favourite book and showing them where to sit down and read quietly on the cosy cushions.

In Nursery we encourage children to treasure books, teaching them how to handle books carefully, turning the pages gently and putting them away when they have finished. The children love to look at the illustrations and are beginning to identify the letters they are learning in their phonics sessions. This week our special story has been ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’. The children even went out looking for the bear and found him hiding in a cave in the Cranmore grounds. For further information, please ask your child to tell you what happened!

We also love stories outdoors. At Forest School last week our focus was ‘Stick Man’. The children listened carefully to the story and made their own stickmen.

They are becoming confident listeners and even made their own ‘Sound Maps’ in Forest School this week.

The Great Cranmore Book Bake-Off! We had an amazing day on Monday when our ‘Bake a Cake based on a Book’ competition started off Book Week deliciously! Here you can see just some of the fabulous cakes and biscuits produced by our ‘star bakers’. The imagination and effort that went into these creations was truly outstanding!

Well done to all the families who took part. Every entrant was awarded a Supermerit (10 merits) and there were two or three winners from each year group, who received book tokens for the Book Fair.

European Day of Languages On 26th September 2018, we celebrated the European Day of Languages.

We had a great Assembly on Monday about multiculturalism, followed by a quiz in our Form Time about various languages, and the geography and history of Europe. Our fantastic chef and his team cooked for us a delicious themed lunch on Wednesday with French ratatouille, Ukrainian broth, Spanish chicken, English garden salad, to name a few. In the morning we had a special VIP guest: the Founder of Linguascope website, Monsieur StĂŠphane DerĂ´ne. He talked to the 5th and 6th Form about the importance of learning foreign languages. He gave us advice on how to enjoy it and learn in a fun way, with a few mnemotechnic tips.

In the afternoon, the 4th Form enjoyed asking Mr Derone questions about his website. They were very impressed!

Did you know that: Linguascope receives around 1 million of visitors a week?

80% of schools in the UK use this website and lots in other countries such as Afghanistan, New Zealand and Iran.

We can practise 11 different languages, English and Welsh included.

Mr Derone was inspired by the movie Finding Nemo when he created the yellow fish, the mascot of Linguascope.

He works with people from 7 different nationalities.

He is French, like Ms Meneghin!
