WHAT YOU NEED

Minimum Admission Requirements

National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) with:

• An achievement rating of at least (4) in four subjects from the subject list (Bachelor’s Degree endorsement)

• At least one of these four subjects should be an official and regional language of the province as Home language (HL) English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa for Mowbray; and English or Afrikaans for Wellington

• An achievement rating of at least (3) in another official and regional language of the province as First Additional Language (FAL) English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa for Mowbray; and English or Afrikaans for Wellington

• At least one of the languages in bullet (2) or (3) listed above should be the language of learning and teaching (LoLT) at CPUT. LoLT at CPUT is Afrikaans for Wellington Campus, and English for Mowbray Campus

• An achievement rating of at least (4) in subjects related to the elective offerings of the specific Teacher Education programme for which you applied, such as: Mathematics, Accounting, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences

National Certificate (Vocation) (NCV)

At least (60%) in three of the following fundamental subjects, including the LoLT of the institution:

• English (official language at first additional language level, 20 credits) at NQF Level 4

• Mathematics (20 credits) at NQF Level 4 OR Mathematical Literacy (20 credits) requiring a pass rate of at least (70%)

Additional Admission Requirements

You require at least (70%) in four vocational subjects (20 credits each), chosen from the NC(V) Level 4 subjects:

• An additional language (other than the LoLT at the institution), either Afrikaans or IsiXhosa

• Three, of which at least two are 20 credit bearing vocational subjects, related to the elective offerings of the specific Teacher Education programme for which you’ve applied

Minimum Admission Requirements

• National Senior Certificate (NSC); or Senior Certificate (SC;) or a National Senior Certificate for Adults (NASCA); or a Level 4 National Certificate (Vocational) (NC(V)) with a diploma entry endorsement or equivalent

Additional Admission Requirements

• A Level 4 or 5 Occupational Certificate in ECD can also be presented for consideration for admission; and a Level 5 certificate or diploma can be presented for consideration for admission and assessment pertaining to advanced credit standing

Note: Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education is only offered at Mowbray Campus

Additional Admission Requirements

• A Level 5 Certificate or Diploma in Early Childhood Development (ECD) may be presented. You may also be requested to submit a portfolio of evidence reflecting your practical experience and any additional and relevant training.

• If you have a Level 4 ECD qualification and teaching experience in the age group 4 to 6 you will be requested to submit a portfolio of evidence reflecting your practical experience and any additional and relevant training.

• Applicants must include a reference letter from the school principal stating that the student is working full-time in a Grade R classroom at the school.

Foundation Phase Teaching

As a Foundation Phase teacher, you could teach learners from Grades R to 3. This degree will prepare you to support Foundation Phase learners (Grades R to 3) in acquiring the values, knowledge, and skills essential for their holistic development and laying the foundation for life-long learning.

Your on-the-job training

Each of these study areas will require you to work at a school for a minimum of eight weeks annually for the duration of your studies.

Senior Phase & Further Education & Training (FET) Teaching

This degree will enable you to teach in the Senior Phase (Grades 7–9) and Further Education and Training (Grades 10–12). It equips teachers with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to adapt, and think critically and creatively to ensure they are active, reflective, and responsive stakeholders in the ever-changing educational landscape in our democratic society.
