The Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) is for prospective South African Chemical Engineering students who meet the minimum admission requirements, but may fall short on the admission point score (APS) for the mainstream programme.

Ever wondered how petroleum or minerals are produced? As a Chemical Engineering graduate, you will know the answer.

You will be trained to convert raw materials into high value products using processing and design principles, for example –producing liquid fuels from crude oil and manufacturing chemicals, explosives, fertilisers and plastics – to mention just a few.

The department utilises an Admission Point Score (APS) as selection criteria once your minimum admission requirements are satisfied. You also have to score a minimum of 27–29 on the APS for the ECP, 23–26 should you be wait-listed

Subject to the space availability, consideration will be given for admitting students to the Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) in the Diploma in Chemical Engineering only, with: English (4); with one of either Mathematics/ Physical Science (4), and the other (3), with a minimum of 45%, or Technical Maths/ Technical Science (5) and the other (4), with a minimum of 55%.

Your on-the-job training You will have to complete Work Integrated Learning (WIL), which forms part of a combination of WIL modalities, such as work-directed theoretical learning, problem-based learning and project-based learning. A combination will be utilised in simulated and real situations to expose you to workplace practices and how they are used to solve engineering problems.
