A Letter From Our President Kumusta na ka Barkada? Ing lagyu ku Justin Angeles, President of Cal Poly Pomona Barkada. Mayap a bengi and welcome to Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 31st annual Pilipino-American Culture Night. I had the pleasure to work with Barkada’s 2020-2021 executive board, Infinit-E Board. Tonight’s show entitled “Sonder” is entirely student-run production led by Alex Manzon, Infinit-E’s Culture Chair, and Albert Andres, Infinit-E’s Barkada Entertainment Company Coordinator. These board members have worked restlessly all summer, dedicated nights of virtual practice, have given Barkada members everlasting memories, and most importantly have carried the spirit of Barkada in within the harsh realities of the pandemic. Being able to witness Alex and Albert become the leaders of Barkada has been a joy to see. They have grown so much over the past months. I could never have been more humble and proud to be a part of their production. For the cast and crew of PACN, I want to acknowledge their perseverance and dedication to tonight’s show. I would have never imagined that so many people would join Barkada in a pandemic. Tonight’s show would not have been possible without all the members present here. Barkada would not exist without our members. Thank you for giving Infint-E Board a reason to wake up every morning and give it our all. Our members have inspired and lifted up our souls during these dark times. Tonight is the day that our members show you their passion for Barkada. Cherish this moment till infinity and beyond. This show carries a special meaning. Sonder touches on the realization that everyone has a story, a life as vivid and complex as your own. Barkada has so many amazing individuals in our organization. Sometimes it makes you wonder what they are thinking. What are their names? What are they going through? What made them smile today? What is the biggest thing they have overcome? What are their values? What are their stories? Tonight, we show you their stories. We show you Barkada. As Infint-E’s President, I wanted to give a voice for our members to tell their stories, to live their lives to the fullest, to belong. Most importantly, I wanted them to experience the infinite love and realize the infinite possibilities they had in a pandemic. This year has not been a curse, it has been a blessing in disguise because I am so grateful to have met everyone here tonight. I have always imagined Barkada to be the type of organization that tells its members that it is good to be alive. After working with Infinit-E Board, PACN Board, and our general members, it made me realize that it always has been. Thank you to all the alumni for your guidance throughout the process this year. Thank you Infint-E Board for accepting me and all my flaws. Thank you to my Barkada family for being there when times felt lonely. Thank you to the members who have carried on the flames of Barkada. Thank you Alex and Albert for making all of this possible. I hope you enjoy the show.

A Letter From Our Culture Chair I’d never thought I’d be in the first few pages of the PACN program.. Welcome Friends & Family to Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 31st Pilipinx Annual Culture Night! ‘Sonder’ has been a year in the making, and it’s finally here! This story is about Rey, after both his parents passed, he shut himself out from his siblings and ex-highschool sweetheart and moved away for a more successful life. He then returns back home for the holidays and is forced to face the untied ends of family & love. Will he ever solve the problems with his ego in the way? To PACN Board, you are all amazing and thank you for sticking with us since the summer and making this show possible. To Glen, I appreciate you so much! Thank you for helping me throughout it all and holdin me down. To my family, love you. To Albert, personally I think we’re probably the most foul BECC & Culture Chair combo, but I wouldn’t wanna lead PACN with anyone else, thank you for everything and more! You are such a great person to bounce ideas off of and here we are.
Alexandra Manzon
To Kyle Pat, I’m so glad how close we got within the short amount of time we’ve known each other, thank you for being so hardworking and bringing my vision to life. To Infinit-E Board, we really took on a whole Barkada year online, thank you for the late night talks, the venting and all the hard work you all put in to make this year unforgettable, love you forever. After knowing that this year was entirely virtual, that only further motivated me to help bring this PACN to life. This show would literally would not have happened at all without our members, you all really saw the vision with us and said ‘lets go’. It was a very difficult year for many of us, I can’t say it was ever easy. There were many doubts about this show happening at all, we thought it would be a regular twitch stream a month before the showing, but the thing that really kept us going was the spirit Barkada still had even in an online setting. We appreciate every one of you for supporting and keeping that PACN flame alive. And to the Infinit-e babies, never stop trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone, jobs not finished. See you next year. To the one reading this, this show is dedicated to you. Appreciate how far you have come, despite everything that has happened this year, you are still here and pushing forward! Through the literal ups and downs of this year, I really am going to miss everything, it was truly unforgettable. With love, Alexandra Manzon Culture Chair 2020-2021

A Letter From Our BECC Hello everyone, and welcome to Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 31st Annual Pilipino American Culture Night. My name is Albert Leandro Andres, and it has been my pleasure to serve as your Barkada Entertainment Company Coordinator for this past year.
Albert Andres
PACN has this innate ability to bring people together. No matter the situation, and no matter how far apart everyone is, our culture always keeps us together. All of my doubts and fears that had been building up throughout the year soon turned into determination. The determination to make this year’s PACN as special as possible for our members, and show them why we do this. Although this season has been a bit unorthodox in how we usually run things, it’s been a joy to see our cast and crew still enjoying themselves, still growing together, and still feeling everything one feels during their first PACN. Culture and tradition span far beyond any distance between any group of people, and I believe PACN 31 is a perfect example of that.
With this being said, I would like to thank our PACN 31 Cast and Crew for sticking through with us until the end. We know it’s been different and perhaps not what you expected, but if it weren’t for everyone’s willingness to practice virtually and still put in as much effort as in person practices would take, we literally wouldn’t have a show. That church parking lot would be empty, our coordinators would have coordinated for nothing, Alex and I would have nothing to show, and PACN would be dead. So just know that every single one of you made this production worth it. You all made this happen, not us. I would also like to thank my partner throughout all of this, your Culture Chair Alex Manzon. Look man, I don’t know what I would have done if you weren’t our Culture Chair this year. We’ve pretty much been on the same wavelength even all the way back when we first told each other we were running. Since then, we’ve been through a lot of ups and downs while working on this show. Through all our planning in the summer, to venue troubles, to our PACN showcase transitions, to costume troubles, and finally to tonight, I’m glad that it was you and I that had to plan and execute a PACN in a fully online setting. Some final thank you’s to wrap this up: Thank you to our Historian Kyle Libramonte. You were 100% probably the most important board member for this entire operation. I know earlier I said there wouldn’t be a show without the cast, but like there a c t u a l l y wouldn’t be a show without your filming and editing. Thank you to my kuya Kyle, my adings Darrel, Matt, and Shawney, and the rest of Duck Line for supporting me throughout this year. Shoutout to my day 1 Barkada monkeys Ryan, Robert, JP, Raven, and Michael. Thank you to my girlfriend Alexa, for constantly loving and supporting everything I do. Thank you to all of my dance coordinators this year for staying with us and working hard despite the circumstances. Shoutout to Barkada Band. Shoutout to Infinit-E Board and the Infinit-E babies, I love y’all. And finally, thank you to Barkada, and anyone that I’ve met through this club. Whether or not you know it, you’ve impacted me in the best possible ways, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without each and every one of you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help lead this club. Your Infinit-E Board BECC, Albert Andres

The María Clara Suite showcases the Spanish influence in dance, music, dress, and societal customs throughout the Philippine Islands. Its name comes from the legendary character, María Clara, in José Rizal’s novel, Noli Me Tángere. This character symbolizes the grace and beauty of Filipina women.
The dance for this year’s suite is called Sinakiki, and it originates fagorom the Rapu-Rapu island in Albay, Philippines. This dance imitates the actions of a male rooster courting his lovely mate. It is a very fun and flirtatious dance that is often performed during the island’s lively fiestas.

Eskrima, also known as Arnis or Kali, is the national sport and martial art of the Phillppines. The martial art involves fighting with sticks, knives, bladed weapons, and even unarmed combat. The art evolved during the Spanish occupation, as technique was passed down in secret, and often disguised as dances.

Andrea Mindanao, the Philippines’ southernmost island, is the country’s cultural melting pot. It houses influences from Spain, China, Indonesia, and the Middle East. Although Mindanao carries a strong flavor from other lands, there are people who have lived there before it became a breeding ground of foreign trade. Tribes such as the T’boli, Bilaan, Manobo, Bagobo, and other groups inhabit the vast regions of Mindanao. Like their Northern Luzon counterparts, these groups honor their gods for the fruits and trials of daily life. What distinguishes them from other tribes in the Philippines is their intricate craftsmanship in metal, clothing, and jewelry. These tribes pride themselves in their concept of beauty and are known for creating colorful sets of jewelry and clothing out of dyed pineapple and banana fibers with are showcased in their traditional dances.
Justin “Sua Ku Sua”, or “My Pomelo Tree” is a dance that reflects the gentleness of the sua’s leaves, attractive fruits, and slender body to that of a lady. It is a courtship danced performed by couples with the use of fans. The Tausug people of Jolo, Sulu (where the dance originates) depended on pomelo fruits for their livelihood, which inspired them to make this dance.
Andrea Mae Cunanan
Justin Paredes-Sison The Muslims in the Philippines, were able to resist Spanish conquest. They preserved the Islamic lifestyle that differs from the majority of the Philippine population. The dances are characterized by vivid colors and rhythmic movements which reflect the influence of Arabian and Indo-Malaysian cultures.

“Bulaklakan” translates to “flowering plants” in Tagalog and originates from the Filipino town of Bulacan, a region known for its abundance of flora. The dance is traditionally performed during the month of May, when flowers bloom aplenty, and in honor of the Santa Cruz de Mayo, a Roman Catholic holiday dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Young girls would sway back and fourth with flower garlands overhead to celebrate the occasion. The traditional costume consists of a woman’s barong tagalog, a long, flowy skirt and many floral accents. Many of the fabrics are light and colorful and are homemade, hence the flower arch being constructed out of flowers and bamboo.

This dance originates from Leyte on the Visayan Islands during the Spanish occupation in the Philippines. The name tinikling came from the long-legged bird called the tikling. Tinikling is meant to imitate the movements of the bird as it avoids bamboo traps set by Filipino farmers on rice fields. One legend has it that locals were ordered to stand in between bamboo poles that were clapped together as punishment for working too slowly or disobeying orders. Filipino natives would react by jumping when the bamboo poles were about to be clapped.
