A Letter From Our President

Good evening everyone, and welcome to Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 34th annual Pilipino American Culture Night! My name is Jayson Pacio and this year, I’ve had the honor and privilege of leading the 2023-2024 Executive Board as the President of Barkada.

This year’s production is called “Sa Ibang Buhay”, which means “in another life”. There will be a point in most people’s lives where we ask the same burning question: how different would everything be if I had done it differently? Tonight’s show personifies this question through a Filipino-American perspective and encourages us to look deep within ourselves and learn about how one’s current self is shaped by where we came from.

For me, Sa Ibang Buhay means the inevitability of regret that one will go through as they grow older and dwell on their past. The pain of the past can often linger and lead us astray, but in order to move forward and live, we ourselves must choose how we reflect and grow to move forward.

3 years ago marks the premiere of the first PACN I was in. Ran by my predecessor Alex during the pandemic, it’s the first taste of Barkada’s unmoving spirit and desire to present our culture in any way that we can. We promise to always find a way to connect everyone outside and inside our community with our culture. Bridging the gap between the Filipino experience vs. the Filipino-American experience is just one of the many reasons we still do this. Our Filipino diaspora is something to be proud of and is part of why Barkada exists today.

To the alumni of Barkada, thank you for the guidance and support. We appreciate it always and are so grateful for it!

To my family and friends, thank you for the love you always show and for helping me develop into the person I am now.

To my Starr-E Board, thank you for your loyalty and dedication to helping me lead this club. I would not be the leader I am today without you 14 as my support.

To the cast of “Sa Ibang Buhay,” thank you for giving this production all of your effort and energy. I want you all to remember, when reading back on this, that this is not just your night, but your journey that you’re showing on the stage tonight. Be loud and proud, and leave the stage with no regrets!

To everyone I’ve met thanks to Barkada, thank you for all the memories for all these years: the late night Discord calls, the random plots, and the endless laughs. Without you, I would not have a reason to lead Barkada the way I do now. In another life, my life would be different. But with the love I have found now, I would not change a thing. Let’s make more memories tonight - enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

A Letter From Our Culture Chair

I never thought I would be here.

It’s insane how every moment leads up to where you are now. You are an aggregate of all of the people you’ve met, all of the accidents you stumble upon, and all of the dreams that you’ve dreamt. Sometimes I think about how different my life would be if even a single thing had changed. Maybe I would be different. Maybe I wouldn’t be here right now typing a letter for the show’s program. Maybe I would still be thinking about how my life would be in another life. Sa Ibang Buhay.

But let me go through what got me here in the first place.

It started as an accident.

I was driving on the road listening to Jump by Van Halen when the idea of the PACN story came to be. A time traveling story set in the 80’s that centered around a man reliving his past and revitalizing his passion for life and music. At first, I thought I was crazy and it was just a dumb idea. Then I kept thinking about it. Adding ideas, people, and places. I started to include a lot of aspects to my own life and experiences (reason as to why the story is set in Project 8, Quezon City). What started as a passing idea soon became real. I started to take it more seriously and that was when I came to a decision. I had to see this dream through.

The intent I had while writing this story was to bridge the gap between generations. That is why I had the story revolve around a main character at two very different stages in his life. This is intended to allow parents and their children to mutually understand the experiences of the other and see past each other's differences. Creating a show that created this unity, honored FilipinoAmerican culture, and provided an astonishing experience for everyone to enjoy was something I wanted more than anything.

However, I can only take this dream so far. I alone was not enough to create the experience that I was so passionate for.

It was continued by thepeople.

This show is nothing without the people that put their whole lives into this show and have believed in me since the beginning.

To the actors and dancers, I thank you for spending your nights for the past four months in the cold of the Paseo to learn the dances and culture behind them.

To my PACN Board, I thank you for working so hard in getting the gears of the show turning behind the scenes. While you guys are not always at the forefront of the work to receive credit, just know that everyone including myself is proud of what you have created.

To my Starr-E board, especially the rest of BECCLCULTURE: Liz and Aidan. You have been in this process longer than anyone else has been. You all have gotten me through the ugly side of this process and have motivated me by showing me the wonderful leaders you guys are in everything you guys do. For that I am eternally grateful.

Lastly, to my family and friends, I owe you guys for everything that I am today.

Come to think of it. While I think about how things may be different, I wouldn’t want it to be. Because everything brought about the experience you are about to witness.

With that being said, I hope you enjoy PACN 34: Sa Ibang Buhay.

Yours Truly,

A Letter From Our B.E.C.C

Hello everyone and welcome to Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 34th annual Pilipino American Culture Night! My name is Elizabeth (Liz) Woo and it’s been an honor being your Barkada Entertainment Company Coordinator this year.

PACN is part of the reason I joined Barkada. I joined Barkada my first year looking for community and a place to continue dancing in college. My first PACN “Magkita Tayo Muli '' was during the shift of coming back to school in person. The sense of unity amongst our cast and crew to produce the show amidst all odds sparked my love for PACN.

One of my favorite parts of PACN is finding out what cultural dances we learn each year. Choosing the cultural dances for this PACN has been so fun seeing members learn new dances, their origin, and the message behind them. The spirit of PACN is in learning. Whether you’re dancing, acting, or singing, you’re bound to learn something new about Filipino culture amongst friends.

The friendships and memories made here last a lifetime. My dad was in Barkada during his time at Cal Poly Pomona and he encouraged me to join. Barkada’s first PACN was during his junior year. The tradition of celebrating Filipino culture through PACNs for the past 34 years is truly remarkable. It’s been such a joy to keep this entirely student-led tradition alive, hopefully for years and generations to come.

I’d like to give a special thanks to the cast and crew of PACN 34. Thank you for giving everything you have to make tonight happen. I’m so thankful for each and every one of you. Thank you for spending so many cold nights at the Paseo and rainy days in new structure with us. I hope you each take a piece of this show with you. Next, I’d like to thank PACN Board for being the foundation of this production. This show wouldn’t have been possible without their hard work since August. I’m so incredibly proud of each of you and thank you for all that you do. I’d also like to thank my family, friends, Starr-E Board ☆, and predecessors for their support.

Lastly, I would like to thank my two partners Aidan and Isaiah. Thank you for being my backbone this year personally and in Barkada. It’s been an honor and a privilege to make this show with you. To Isaiah, we made this show from the ground up and started days before I was even elected. I’m so thankful for your push and for pushing me to be a better leader every day. To Aidan, words can’t describe how thankful I am for your support and guidance. Thank you for empowering me to keep going every day even when they have been difficult. What the three of us have made is special and I would not have wanted to lead this production with anyone else.

Sa bawat buhay, naniniwala ako na nagawa natin ang palabas na ito

In every life, I believe that we made this show :)

Tonight’s story reminds us of our origins and the different paths that life may take us. Culture exists in all of us. It gives us a sense of belonging, a connection to the past, and a basis for the future. Thank you for coming tonight and enjoy the show.

With love,

Elizabeth (Liz) Malia Woo

Barkada Entertainment Company Coordinator, 2023 - 2024

A Letter From Our C.L.C.

PACN has been one of the biggest influences that has led me to where I am today. Spending my time in Barkada last year was my biggest leap in trying to connect with Filipino culture. With that came my introduction to Pilipino-American Culture Night (PACN), an avenue for Filipinos and Filipino-Americans to learn a small section of traditions and culture. I was engrossed in participating and learning what I could. During this time, I was able to meet so many different people. Each of them had taught me something new about the culture, myself, and who I could become. From them, I was inspired to join Barkada’s Executive Board and help run this year’s PACN.

From my experience, I recognize that PACN helps promote one thing: Community. As ironic as it is being this year’s Community Logistics Coordinator, I truly do believe that PACN is the best space for us to connect. We all come together intending to create a wonderful show that best represents who we are. In this process, we are able to meet like-minded peers with a shared goal. We get to know each other through a multitude of spaces: in the study room, learning the choreography with suitemates, on the wings of the stage, or having our photo taken. After weeks and weeks of practicing and mingling, not only do we have the show you see today but we also have created a community of friends, supporters, and family.

PACN 34: Sa Ibang Buhay will not be the penultimate experience of our college lives or journeys in self-discovery. Rather, it is a sign of our continued celebration of Filipino culture, a testament of Pinoy pride for many generations to come, a relic of good times passed, and a beacon to long-lasting friendships.

Before I finish, I would like to thank my Mom, Dad, and Kuya for their love, understanding, and late-night wake-ups from my nightly commutes. To the Cast & Crew of PACN 34, the bonds we have made together will continue and I hope to nurture these relationships long after we have all graduated. To my PACN Board and Barkada Executive Board, your continued support made me into the leader I am today. To Baes Line, I came into this year by myself and am coming out with the most loving group I don’t deserve. Finally, to Isaiah and Liz, we made what was only our dream into a reality.

Thank you and enjoy PACN 34: Sa Ibang Buhay.

LEAD ROLES

Ruben “Ruby” Ramirez Jr. Tomas Montero

Ruben is a middle-aged Filipino man who lives in Pomona, CA. In his past, Ruben used to have a passion for music, but due to a traumatizing experience he gave up on his passion for music and gave up on his dream. Ruben is against the idea of pursuing your dreams and sees life as a mundane cycle where you just make as much money as you can till you die. However, his world gets turned upside down when his son changes his plans for the future and Ruben has to confront his past.

Ruben “Ruby” Ramirez Jr. Jayzee Pacio

This version of Ruben is from his younger years prior to the traumatizing event that caused him to let go of his dream of music. Because of this, he is passionate, confident, and optimistic almost to the point of naivety. His dream more than anything is to leave his small town and see the world, specifically America, and play his music wherever he goes. He is very protective of his friends and family and is very caring of everyone around him. His goofiness, care for others, and ability to inspire are what other people love about him.

Jackson “Jax” Ramirez

Calvin Paras

Jax is Ruben’s son. When Jax was a kid, he’s always had a passion for playing music ever since his dad taught him how to play. He is the “perfect student” in school and he has the admiration of his friends and family. However, he’s not passionate about school or learning. His love for life is rooted in his love for music and playing the guitar. At the start of the story, he is about to graduate high school, when he has to come to the decision of choosing his parents’ approval or his dreams.

Delila “Lila” Salvador Dylan Mangahis

Lila is Ruby’s childhood sweetheart that he grew up with since his youth. They were both orphans who had to thrive off the street, until they were taken under the care of Nanay Gloria. Lila is described to have a very tomboyish nature, while still being very elegant and beautiful. She is sassy, clever, and not afraid to speak her mind. She is the emotional center of the family and reassures everyone of their worth and their goals. If Ruby has his head in the clouds, Lila was who kept him grounded.

Modern

Modern dancing within the Filipino community is a vibrant and dynamic expression of culture, creativity, and identity. Drawing from a rich tapestry of indigenous, Spanish, American, and Southeast Asian influences, modern Filipino dance blends traditional movements with contemporary styles, resulting in a fusion of old and new. Moreover, modern Filipino dance serves as a platform for storytelling, allowing performers to convey narratives of love, struggle, resilience, and triumph. Whether it's performed in traditional attire or contemporary costumes, modern Filipino dance reflects the resilience, creativity, and cultural pride of the Filipino community.

Singkil

| Mindanao

Mindanao is the second largest island in the Philippines and is located in the southern region. Originating from the Maranao people of Lake Lanao, Singkil is a royal dance that tells the story of a Maranao princess and prince who must escape a forest filled with evil spirits. It depicts the famous Maranao epic poem called the Darangen. The dance symbolizes grace, beauty, and resilience. The name of the dance means "To entangle the feet with disturbing objects such as vines or anything in your path." Singkil is named after a bell accessory worn by the Maranao princess.

Eskrima

Eskrima is the national martial art of the Philippines. Also known as Arnis and Kali, Eskrima originates from pre-colonial society and was taught widely amongst the native people. The art consists of the use of weaponry such as sticks, staffs, and knives, in which the use of these weapons can translate towards learning hand-to-hand combat. The Spanish banned learning the art during colonial rule, so native Filipinos disguised it as a dance to continue teaching the art without receiving punishment. Today, there are many variations of Eskrima, and can be seen in mainstream media such as "Dune.”

Habanera Botoleña

| Maria Clara

Coordinated by Alyssa Arcena & Darrel Varquez

Maria Clara, the main female character in Jose Rizal’s novel, Noli Me Tángere, is a woman of nobility and virtue who represents qualities of Filipino Womanhood. The Maria Clara suite includes romantic themes of courtship, love, and flirtation. Habanera Botoleña, popularized in Botolan, Zambales, is a dance typically performed at weddings by the wedding party, which consists of the bride and groom, bridesmaids, groomsmen, and the bride and groom’s parents.

This dance portrays love and happiness between partners through delicate postures and extended arms. Other special occasions, like baptisms, may be celebrated with a Habanera Botoleña performance.

Traditionalist |

Pagdiwata originates from the indigenous Tagbanua people of the Palawan region. Due to their belief in good and bad spirits, they perform rituals and ceremonies to sway divine influence in their favor.

Pagdiwata is performed as a ritual dance that covers several themes: healing the sick, thanksgiving, and spirits. The dance often involves a shaman waving two whisks to scare away harmful spirits, while others assist in the ritual by laying down rice, clicking sticks, and waving candles.

Bulaklakan celebrates social gatherings and relaxation after a hard day’s work and is traditionally an all female dance. The dance is typically performed during the month of May because of Spring. The city of Luzon is known for performing the dance during the celebration “Santa Cruz de Mayo” dedicated to the Virgin Mary during Roman Catholic festivity. In some places, the celebration occurs in front of an altar built by the "Hermana Mayor". The name 'Bulaklakan' derives from the town Bulacan from Northern Philippines because of the natural floral growth in the area. In the dance, performers hold an arched garland of leaves and flowers attached to a bamboo circle or rattan arch while wearing a Barong Tagalog & brightly colored skirt or dress with floral patterns!

Rural |

Maglalatik

Coordinated by Desiree Camacho & Jophiel Oliver

A mock war dance, Maglalatik depicts the fight between the Christians and the Moros over latik, coconut meat residue. Performers wear coconut shell harnesses and red or blue pants, corresponding to the Moros and the Christians respectively. Maglalatik is also performed as a tribute to San Isidro de Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.

Tinikling originates from Leyte on the Visayan Islands during the Spanish occupation in the Philippines. The name “Tinikling" stems from the long-legged tikling bird. The dance is meant to imitate the movements of the tikling bird as it avoids bamboo traps set by Filipino farmers on rice fields.

Many people believe that this dance originated during Spanish colonial rule, when indigenous laborers were ordered to stand in between bamboo poles that were clapped together on their feet as punishment for working too slowly or disobeying orders. Filipino natives would react by jumping when the bamboo poles were about to be clapped. The practice of jumping between the poles eventually transformed from a challenge into the dance.

P-Notes

Pilipino Notes or P-Notes for short is a choir that formed circa 2004/5 as a group of Barkada members that loved to sing. Traditionally, an acapella group, P-Notes opens PACN by performing the Filipino and American national anthems and has historically performed at other various Barkada events such as Barkada’s Got Talent.

Barkada Band

Barkada Band is a group of friends that found each other through their Filipino club and discovered their passion for music. As a cover band, they eventually found themselves exploring Filipino culture through music via OPM and various Filipino artists.
