IS 2020 A YEAR SQUEEZED INTO A FEW WEEKS? A funny thing happened last month. We started talking about new truck launches and technology again. 2020 has been a terrible year for many reasons, so it would be almost churlish to suggest that the absence of any major breaking news on new trucks as being anything other than a side-note to an otherwise challenging and serious situation. However, it was a relief to be able to talk about the new trucks coming from Scania, Mercedes (this month we have an article of the new Zetros, next month a re-vamped range), MAN, as well as the T X Port used truck par-excellence from Renault Trucks. Of course, some like MAN have showed their hand earlier this year, but the lifting of restrictions in Europe over the summer, has also given the OEMs the opportunity to lift the lid on what they have in store for the market. With the unpredictable nature of the pandemic making it impossible to know whether we are over the worse or merely having a pause as the eye of the

storm passes, it is almost like a year’s worth of truck news has been let loose before we are all behind close doors again. I say all, but then, we have seen how the transportation, transport, haulage sectors have remained open for business when others have closed. And even when it has been barely financially viable for them to do so. In many ways, these new trucks do offer an answer to the economic stress fleets are under. There has never been a greater choice of new trucks and financing for them or better access to used trucks that meet modern client demands in the region. I would also argue that we were at a point where fleets had never been more needed even before the pandemic struck. It is just a shame that it comes at a time when money is at its tightest for a generation and contracts are still low. There is real hope that the region’s economies can bounce back in 2021 - and let’s hope that means this sector gets more than a few weeks to make the most of it.

SELLANYCAR ENTERS SAUDI ARABIA WITH LAUNCH OF ONLINE USED VEHICLE SERVICE E-COMMERCE

UAE online marketplace SellAnyCar. com has formally entered the Saudi Arabian used car buying market with the launch of Kayishha. “Kayishha will integrate the SellAnyCar.com core value proposition and advanced technology engine with an international dealer buying network and auto inspection locations to enable people across the country to sell any make, model or year car in any condition within 30 minutes at fair market value,” said the company in a statement. SellAnyCar.com recently secured a $35 million investment from Sanabil Investments, which is backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF). “We see tremendous opportunity for Kayishha to redefine how used cars are bought and sold in Saudi the same way SellAnyCar.com totally disrupted the UAE used car marketplace,” said Saygin Yalcin, CEO, SellAnyCar.com and Kayishha. “We’ve taken the pain points out of the process for both the seller and buyer and effectively leveled the playing field so both parties get what they most want and need. Dealers can get a daily list of available cars to keep their lots well stocked. Sellers get a simple, stress-free and transparent way to immediately get fair market value for their cars. Everybody wins.” Kayishha plans to hire more than 300 people across KSA over the next two years and targets the opening of 100 locations within a year. The focus at launch will be on high-traffic and easy to access shopping malls and retail centers in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. meconstructionnews.com

Heavy lifting and moving specialist, Al Faris, has executed a transport job for the UAE’s Etihad Rail Project which entailed moving 25m-long rail tracks weighing 12,000t in total from the Mina Zayed Port to Ghiyathi area of Abu Dhabi. Al Faris said it provided the “client with a complete solution for transporting the 25m-long rail tracks weighing 12,000t in total using our lowbed trailers”, completing 250 trips within 26 days in order to transport and offload the rail tracks at their final location safely. This was the first shipment of rail tracks delivered to the project. “We fabricated 10 flatbed trailers specifically for this project which were

extended up to 25m in length in order to fit the loads effectively and avoid any transport complications. The fabrication was done in-house with technical studies for the extension done prior,” said Al Faris in a statement. The transport trips covered a distance of over 250km from Mina Zayed Port to the Etihad Rail laydown area in Ghiyathi, Abu Dhabi, with each

trip of about 4.5 -5 hours in duration, Al Faris added. The transportation, which was critical in nature due to the long travel time and long loads, required specialised techniques, equipment and experienced staff. All road surveys, planning, technical support documentation, permissions, execution plans and schedules were prepared in-house prior to execution.

EURO AUCTIONS REPORTS 150% RISE IN DUBAI BIDS AUCTIONS

Euro Auctions said its September 28th event attracted strong prices for the machinery on sale owing to a 150% rise in bidder registrations. The international plant and equipment auctioneers said in a statement that “new equipment in the region is scarce” and there is a “real demand for good late, low hours, used equipment in the Middle East”. This is expected to lead to healthy attendance and a large presence of international bidders at the auction and keep prices at good levels. “Since Covid-19 (began), sales have presented a good compliment of

quality machinery which has drawn the attention of the Middle East market. With a strong online presence, Euro Auctions markets to an international audience from over 95 countries

ONE CHARGE 250KM

Scania launches its first fully electric truck A RANGE OF UP TO 250KM IS PROMISED AS SCANIA BRINGS ITS ELECTRICAL TRANSPORTATION KNOW-HOW INTO THE URBAN DELIVERY SECTOR Scania launched its first fully electric truck last month and the good news is that its range of up to 250km will let it operate during the whole day and still return safely to its home depot for overnight charging. The Swedish truck, bus and engine-maker also clarified that if there is a need for an extended range, the driver can fast charge the truck over a break or during natural stops in operation. It added that the range is, “of

course, dependent on the weight, body type and topography” with truck set to offer the option of either five batteries, for a total of 165 kWh, or nine totalling 300 kWh installed capacity. The reduced five battery array does – understandably – cut the range to 130 km but it does offer the possibility of fast charging to full capacity in under an hour. Obviously, batteries take up space and they are mounted where the combustion

engine would normally be housed. Additional batteries are also mounted on the chassis frame, alongside other components needed for fully electric propulsion, such as battery management units, battery cooling components, electrohydraulic steering system, electric air compressor and inverter. In terms of power, the new electric motor is rated as providing continuous power

of 230 kW, equivalent to approximately 310 hp. Two gears are available to provide high power over a wider speed span, thereby improving comfort, says Scania with the company stressing that one of the major benefits with an electric motor compared with combustion engine is its high controllability. In practice, the customer will experience this through faster acceleration and response from the powertrain,

EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR UPGRADES AND UPDATES AS MILD HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (MHEV) TECH COMES TO RANGE Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology is available on the Jaguar F-Pace for the first time as the new flagship model gets an enhanced intelligent all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmission. With an assertive new exterior, beautifully crafted all-new interior, latest generation Pivi Pro infotainment and MHEV technology, the new Jaguar F-PACE is more luxurious, connected and efficient. The new exterior design gives the award-winning F-PACE performance SUV a cleaner, more assured presence, featuring a new sculpted bonnet with a wider power bulge and smoother, more precisely defined surfaces. The new bonnet also contributes to a more striking finish by reducing the number of shutlines on the front of the car. An enlarged grille features Jaguar’s heritage logo-inspired ‘diamond’ detailing, while the side fender vents now feature the iconic Leaper emblem, demonstrating the exceptional attention to detail found right across the vehicle. A new front bumper with redesigned air intakes and dark mesh details visually widen the new F-PACE for a more assured dynamic presence. New super slim all-LED quad headlights with ‘Double J’ Daytime Running Light (DRL) signatures, which are available with

optional Pixel LED technology, deliver increased resolution and brightness. With Adaptive Driving Beam capability, which evaluates the road ahead and automatically adapts the high beam light to mask oncoming traffic or traffic signs, the system can create varying light beam patterns by selecting different LED segments to optimise visibility and minimise risk of distracting other drivers. All-wheel drive is standard across all F-PACE models and Intelligent Driveline Dynamics provides rear-wheel drive biased performance, with the ability to vary torque to individual axles almost instantly depending on conditions. Auto Vehicle Hold meanwhile smooths operation by holding the brakes for an unlimited period of time when stationary on a gradient, gently releasing the brakes only when the driver depresses the accelerator to drive away. MID-SIZED SUV ALSO GAINS ADVANCED NEW INFOTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY AND ELEGANT DESIGN FEATURES

The Range Rover Velar, the mid-size luxury SUV, which sits between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport in the family lineup, offers customers the perfect balance of design and technology – now with electric power. The new 2.0-litre four-cylinder P400e plug-in hybrid offers a smooth and refined drive, producing a combined 404PS and 640Nm of torque from its 300PS petrol engine and 105kW electric motor, with an impressive 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds). A 17.1Wh lithiumion battery, located under the boot floor, can be charged to 80% in just 30 minutes†† using a fast DC charge point, or 1 hour 40 minutes using a standard 7kW wallbox. A new family of 3.0-litre straight-six Ingenium engines is also introduced to the Range Rover Velar for the first time. The latest generation of smooth and efficient petrol and diesel* engines are available with 48-volt mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) technology for reduced fuel consumption and heightened refinement. The MHEV system uses a Belt integrated Starter Generator (BiSG) in the engine bay to harvest energy usually lost under deceleration, which

is then stored in a 48V lithium-ion battery located beneath the rear loadspace. It is able to redeploy the stored energy to assist the engine when accelerating away, while also delivering a more refined and responsive stop/start system. Nick Rogers, executive director, Product Engineering at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “It has been fifty years since the introduction of the pioneering Range Rover in 1970, and now every family member is electrified with our awesome plug-in hybrid technology. Electrified powertrains and cleaner mild hybrid diesel engines mean the Velar is an even more efficient and sustainable option for our customers.” Also available is the new secondgeneration wearable Activity Key, which can totally replace the traditional key fob when necessary. vehicle,” explained Renualt Trucks in a statement. The manufacturer further explained that the conversion starts with the dismantling of Euro 6 components, namely the silencer and AdBlue components, which are then sent to the manufacturer’s recycling network: “Operators at the Renault Trucks Used Trucks Factory then install the Euro 3 components and the reinforced filtration system. The software and manufacturer’s documentation are updated, allowing the vehicle to be recognised throughout the network with its new features.” Other modifications also include the reinforcement of the air and diesel filters to improve the base truck’s

ability to cope with the fuel differences and environment challenges of the region. Ground clearance has also been increased by 30 mm at the front and 20 mm at the rear. The automated Optidriver transmission – which selects the right gear at the right time according to speed, load and driving style in order to guarantee better mobility and greater comfort while driving – is fitted as standard. The truck as a whole, the cab and every element of the powertrain have been designed to promote fuel savings, says Renault Trucks. The windscreen is inclined by 12° and the cab itself is trapezoid in shape, being 2.35 metres wide at the front and 2.50 metres wide at the back, which improves its

drag coefficient (cx) by up to 12%: “Enhanced productivity is provided by a GCW (gross combined weight) rating of up to 60 t and a fuel tank capacity of up to 1,475 litres for long journeys.” The Euro 3-certified Renault Trucks T X-Port comes with a 12-month international manufacturer’s warranty that covers all incidents relating to the engine, gearbox and axles and is valid throughout Renault Trucks sales and service outlets in the region. WALK ROUND:

THE NEW ZETROS Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ Johannes Faatz takes T&FME on a tour of the new desert powerhouse Zetros

M

ercedes-Benz MENA says its new generation of Zetros has been completely re-worked but remains available in Euro III and Euro V variants for markets with poor fuel quality. The legendary extreme off-roader is a mix of the old and the new with its all-wheel drive 4x4 or 6x6 set-up joined by a new 6x4 configuration which begins production this month. A 4x2 version is also expected to debut in Q1 2021. Customers in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America get a Euro III and Euro V emission engine that has been boosted to 12.8 litre engine and capable of delivering as much as 350 kW (476 hp) in Euro III and up to 375 kW (510 hp) in Euro V. 14 OCTOBER 2020

All vehicles are equipped with a 16-speed manual gearbox with a striking 2400 Nm of torque at the highest engine output. All vehicles are available in three different wheelbases as well as different weight variants. The cabin interior features numerous detail improvements, such as a re-designed instrument panel and an electronic parking brake. It keeps key characteristics of the predecessor, like the fully-fledged middle seat, as optional equipment. MercedesBenz describes the Zetros as an “expert in transporting goods in tough or inaccessible terrain” – and it certainly looks the part. On the outside, the new model generation retains its distinctive and striking cabbehind-engine design but now has a restyled radiator grille, which, thanks to optimised airflow guidance, ensures even more effective

cooling. The new Zetros keeps its signature characteristics with a low silhouette and the cab behind the engine concept, in addition to an optional fording ability of up to 800 mm. The Zetros is a heavy-duty truck, which has been developed for demanding transport tasks involving high payloads. That is why it is often used for delivering supplies to remote regions, as well as in energy exploration and in forestry operations. It can be used all over the world across all extreme climates – from hot desert regions right up to the Arctic. Just as before, the new Zetros remains available in Euro III and Euro V variants for markets with poor fuel. last month to give T&FME a special preview of the vehicle and kindly offered to take us for a tour of the new Zetros. Thanks for allowing us to preview the new Zetros. When do you envision it will be available for order in the region?

The all-wheel-drive variants 4x4 and 6x6 as well as the 6x4 wheel configuration in Euro III and Euro V are available for ordering already. The 4x2 variant will become available in Q1/2021. Why is the Zetros particularly suited for this region?

The Zetros perfectly fits the topographical and climate specifics as well as the transport tasks in MENA region. The region is characterized of extremely hot summers temperatures with a high humidity. The Zetros is equipped in standard with 92dm2 radiator ensuring the best possible cooling for the engine. Another extreme is the dusty environment, the Zetros is perfectly prepared for due to its cyclone pre-filter that is standard on all Zetros models which is filling level is clearly visible from outside and easy to clean. High sulphur and water content in the fuel is also one of the characteristics, we have in the MENA region. The Zetros is equipped with a specific fuel filter with water separator to separate the water from diesel (optionally also a second fuel filter is available) and the engine is designed for fuel wih sulphur content > 1,000ppm for bad fuel areas without additional modifications. These are only a few points outlining that the Zetros is perfectly matching the tough conditions of the MENA region.

What are the main advantages

is coming next year?

When developing the new Zetros, the decision was taken to close the missing wheel configurations for the 4x2 segment with chassis, tipper and tractor head in order to offer our customers a complete product portfolio with the cab-behind-engine concept. The Zetros is the perfect choice for customers who drive on a regular base in areas with a bad fuel quality (high sulphur content) even if the truck is registered in a market with a high emission norm. Additionally, the customers will benefit from the low overall height of the truck which is lower than on a cab-over-engine truck which is huge benefit for bodies in which an over-cab installation is needed (e.g. drilling equipment).

demand in oil and gas and in military applications – are these your target sectors? Are there others?

You are right about the segments you mentioned but there are more segments in which the Zetros will play an important role. We are targeting applications in the energy sector; for example in electricity companies for the maintenance of high voltage lines which are often in an remote off-road area. Also, for construction companies driving in remote areas with sparsely populated workshops, the Zetros might be right choice as the basic maintenance work can be conducted on site by the operator. In addition also civil protection and fire-fighting applications are target segments due to the high fording ability and the available crew cabin which offers a total seating capacity for six passengers. Another completely different application for the Zetros is to convert it into a luxury motorhome or expedition vehicle. Has there been any feedback from the region on the current generation that you have been able to use to help shape development?

We have several Zetros running in the MENA region and are in regular touch with our customers. A regular feedback received was the wish for a higher horsepower on the vehicle which is now being realised with the new engine configurations which go up to 476hp in Euro III 510 hp now with Euro V emission norm. Before the maximum horsepower with Euro III was 426 hp and Euro V was 330 hp.

new cooling system here? How does

The new Zetros combines the strength and characteristics of the former generation with gradual improvements to further enhance the customer’s experience. The truck boasts extreme off-roading capabilities; meaning it’s especially suited to deliver high loads to the remote areas with difficult terrain that are characteristic in this region. It also offers easy maintenance due to the cab-behind-engine concept and easy access to the maintenance points. The improvements made with the new generation are an increased engine output, increased cooling capacity and new features like the electronic parking brake and therefore is even better prepared for the toughest operations in the MENA region.

it improve on the previous system?

meconstructionnews.com

One of the major advantages of the new Zetros is the 92dm2 big radiator which was tested extensively in the region and we can say that the Zetros is perfectly equipped for the hot and humid summers we experience in the MENA region. How have you managed to improve the power of the engine?

A DESERT TRAVERSER The Zetros can be equipped with two fuel tanks with a total capacity of up to 900 litres of diesel which are switchable and enable the driver for a long distance travelling.

The new engine has a higher displacement (12.8l) than the engine we built into the previous Zetros generation. This fact in combination with a newly programmed engine control software allowed us to increase the power of the engine. OCTOBER 2020 15

A MAN FOR ALL REASONS

MAN’s Jörg Mommertz on how new technology can power a recovery for the truck industry in the region

I

t is fair to say that MAN Truck and Bus was on the brink of a barnstorming 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic took the wind out of the sails of the industry. For many, few manufacturers can compete with MAN’s heavy truck technology, so there was a great deal of interest when it finally entered a new truck generation into the market at the start of the year. Even with the threat of the emerging virus looming large, MAN look set to build on a successful integration under the TRATON Group umbrella. Here was a complete revamp which had seen it merge its own heavy duty 16

Many observers also felt 2020 was going to see the German brand reap the benefits of leaning on Volkswagen’s van knowhow with it accelerating its movement in the last mile, ecommerce era through the large panel TGE. A full six months on from the launch, Jörg Mommertz, SVP, head of sales area Middle East, Africa & Latin America, MAN Truck & Bus SE and managing director, MAN Truck & Bus Middle East, paints a picture of a company that has persevered through one of the most testing periods for the industry with the adjustments it has made making him hopeful for a future.

Sometimes people don’t like trucks on the road, now they can see how important it is”

“We started excellently in terms of business at the start of 2020. The first two and a half months went very well. It has been tough, but I’m hoping there’s going to be some shards of light coming through the clouds,” he begins. As his job title suggests, Mommertz enjoys an international perspective on how COVID-19 has affected the industry. The pandemic may have shortened the time in the air for a role that asks him to cover the Middle East, Latin America and Africa but it hasn’t dulled his razorsharp analysis of what is happening in the field. “I have never seen such a market decline – globally – in such a short time. It’s such a steep decline in markets and meconstructionnews.com

while there is a slight increase in market demand giving an outlook from today until the end of the year will not be wise because the local situation is changing every day. “We have been very flexible in supporting some customers. One example is their repair and maintenance contracts. Some customers have not been using the truck for two or three months, so we have agreed a grace period; helping the customer to overcome the critical situation. This was really appreciated by a lot of our customers (in South Africa).” Looking across the regions he is responsible for, Mommertz suggests the data and fundamentals remain strongest in the Middle East where government spending on infrastructure remains a priority: “Giving a projection for 2021 is a challenge but we have been in the truck business for a long time and are always optimistic but also realistic. The Middle East is still the most stable business for us. We have had hits from the oil price on the development on countries like Saudi Arabia but I see the outlook being mostly stable and positive. The governments still want to invest in infrastructure and public transport where I still see some interesting projects ahead for us.” “We are in line with the market trends; defending our market position; we are getting very close to our customers and this is giving me the confidence that – if the economy is picking up – we can satisfy our customers in the way we could as before covid-19.” The emergence of Asian manufacturers – with the South Korean and Chinese leading the way – has made the African market one of the most keenly fought over in the last decade. MAN is able to boast South Africa as a major stronghold and it remains the brand’s crucial point of attack on the continent. Mommertz says that the company has been exploring new markets throughout the crisis. “In Africa we have a different situation to the Middle East. In South Africa we are doing very well and defending our leadership in the bus market and we have also stabilised also and defended our market position in the truck business. The orders intakes in the last week’s are giving me the confidence that we will have more stable outlook for 2021,” he explains. “We also have different spots of business in other markets doing well. In Morocco, Togo and other countries there is demand… Morocco had a tough hit from COVID-19 and there was a long shutdown, but the outlook looks good. In more tourist-focussed countries, the coach business is similar to Europe and is more or less down, but the meconstructionnews.com

situation and the downturn may last a little bit longer. They was a strong downtown in the used truck business as well. I don’t see a used truck as a long-term alternative for a highly developed professional customer.” A pre-COVID launch

truck business, with national distribution networks developing, is picking up fast.” While Africa has traditionally been a destination for used trucks from the Middle East, analysts believe we could start seeing an increase in demand closer to home with financing tight and fleet operations under pressure. Mommertz argues that going ‘new’ still represents the best value in the long-run. “Of course, there are always differences from market to market depending on the development of the country, but in Europe, we have seen a thrust in the pick up of truck orders. Outside Europe is a different pandemic

You want a nice launch for one we believe is the best truck ever”

At the new truck generation launch in Bilbao, MAN Truck & Bus’ chairman spoke of making customers’ business easier, more efficient and thereby more successful: “Simplifying Business – this is our claim, our promise. The new MAN Truck Generation allows us to fulfil this more comprehensively than ever before,” he said at the time. A month later, those same customers were probably facing the most complicated situation for a fleet imaginable. T&FME asks Mommertz whether MAN was unlucky to have the opening up of sales on the new TGX, TGS, TGL and TGM trucks just as the pandemic hit. This has meant leaning on a range of technology to promote what the company calls the best truck ever. “Under the new business processes getting customers in touch with a new product can’t happen for quite a long time. So, we have implemented virtual presentations. In Germany we even used drive-in car cinemas to present the trucks. People got very creative and it worked! Of course this is not forever. “We had quite a good launch but because of Covid-19 there delays with the shutdown of our production and the shutdown of production by our suppliers. But then the entire industry has been affected. They

understood what was going on because they were also getting affected...we have proven we can still offer the customer what he wants and needs to make his business successful.” He adds: “You want to have a smooth launch project for what we believe is the best truck ever. But again it underlines how strong an organisation we can be even in crisis mode. Continuing this success under difficult circumstances shows the customer that we can be seen as a reliable business partner.” While the launch is important for the MAN’s long-term ambitions, web-based calls and technology are bringing together all the ongoing elements of support needed by distributors and their customers. In its

way, COVID-19 has helped accelerate a remote way to support the industry that was already central to the services on offer with the new generation truck platform. “We are very ambitious regarding connectivity,” he says. “Remote services and diagnostics will help customers in similar future situations even more. They will be getting a higher efficiency on the road and uptime.” He adds: “A good lesson from this has been that staying close to the customer and using all available tools on the market to stay in contact with the customer and guarantee them an excellent service is even more important now. Especially there is a local, complete, lockdown like in Jordan, South Africa or Oman,” he says. “This is the modern way of communication. You have to find the balanced approach where you can’t call a customer, but you must give them the confidence that he is important and if they need help, we should be available 24/7. While truck OEMS always depend on the performance of their local dealer and importer, he says MAN remains close to the market: “And they are very close to the customer. So therefore we haven’t lost any deal or we didn’t lose any potential deal because of not traveling.” T&FME asks whether this new approach includes identifying distributors which are particularly strong in understanding the new range while supporting the legacy fleet in the region – and the ones that maybe need a little bit more training. “Of course, we have used the tools for more training and we are seeing the results of our RISING FUEL SAVINGS With fuel savings of up to eight percent, the new MAN Truck Generation achieves significant reductions in CO2.

KENYA JAP GROUP SETS UP NEW MAN CKD PLANT MAN Truck & Bus says the setting up of a CKD production facility near Nairobi is part of its effort to strengthen its presence in Kenya. The new 15,000sqm facility located close to Nairobi has been set-up by MAN’s local partner JAP Group and can assemble both trucks and bus chassis. The German firm has also confirmed that JAP Assembler Kenya Limited, a subsidiary of JAP Group, has the responsibility for operations of this plant. Construction on the CKD project began in August 2019 with the initial assemblies beginning in November last year - and the first vehicle rolled out in January 2020. ‘Truck in a box’ kits are imported from Germany while a ‘small portion’ of the bus CKD items are brought in from South Africa. Looking to the long-term both MAN and JAP Grou are aiming to “cater to greater customer needs for various applications.” “This is a key development in MAN’s presence in Kenya,” said Noel Macaron, head of Truck Sales, Sales Area MEA&LA, MAN Truck & Bus. “Over the years, our partner Mobikey Truck & Bus (part of the JAP Group) has done immense good work in establishing a strong base and credibility for the MAN brand providing excellent sales and after sales service experience to customers. “With the new facility we can offer the benefit of exemption from customs/import duties. Customers will, therefore, benefit from more competitive prices from MAN.”

efforts of the last few months. We are improving the quality of the local dealer network. This gives us a stable foundation in the markets but they can still be supported by us. I also have seen an increase in online training participation on the customer side. Customers are really appreciating it. They are are using their time to get more familiar with our product and for internal/external training. This is also giving the customer the feeling that they are important.” Mommertz describes himself as a ‘truck guy’ and spent many years in the channel as a service manager before joining the OEM’s manufacturing and sale operation. As such, he believes that face-to-face contact remains the long-term goal, even if technology can help overcome the more immediate challenge of keeping the industry moving. “You know, people are like animals. We can sometimes be quite conservative and it can take time to convince even your own team or customer or a business partner of the new processes to do business. It will not replace place direct personal contact forever. But it will help us to get faster and more efficient.” Throughout the COVID crisis, fleets have seen themselves elevated to the status of key workers and the trucking industry has been absolutely vital in keeping economies going. “Transport and logistics have been declared as system relevant to ensure supply for the retail business – everywhere in fact,” he declares. “Covid-19 is giving us a lot of lessons in a lot of aspects. A trucker as such - or also a mechanic in the workshop - in Europe has always had a much higher image and reputation than a driver or mechanic in, let’s say, the middle of Africa. We see a much higher appreciation of the work those people are doing now even when it’s outside of Europe. This makes me happy. Sometimes people don’t like trucks on the road, now they can see how important it is.” Mommertz career now stretches across almost four decades and he says that this current situation is one of the most serious he has faced – including the global economic crisis that dogged the industry over a decade ago. “The recovery after the economic crisis in 2008-2012 went much faster because not all elements of the society and the economy got affected. I have never seen a situation with the airlines, for instance, like we have today. In 2009, people were still travelling. Therefore, there are a lot of differences and the pick-up for the truck industry was a lot faster than it could be now. “For instance, we are seeing a change in customer behaviour, such as here in Munich people are using passenger cars more and not meconstructionnews.com

THE BIG WINNERS E-commerce and internet sales are among the big winners of the COVID-19 crisis, says Mommertz.

public transport. But from my point of view, this is a short term phenomenon because there is no alternative for well-developed public transport in the long term. In the coach business, it may last a little bit longer until regular travel activities pick up again. But despite that and here I may use Saudi Arabia as a good example, we have executed a deal of more than 80 luxury coaches to Saudi Arabia. Potentially there is business.” With our time drawing to a close, the discussion moves onto the sectors that he believes MAN’s refreshed range can make the most impact.

There are going to be shards of light coming through the clouds”

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY The Middle East should continue to recover in 2021 with national logistics networks yet to reach their full potential.

“We also have seen an increase in demand for light commercial vehicles and this is benefited our TGE. E-commerce and internet sales have one of the big winners of COVID-19,” he explains. “Then there is the Municipality business – we have to maintain our cities and Covid will also help the improvement of hygenic standards outside of Europe. “In terms of waste management and water transport, we have had requests for some units from the United Nations for African countries. This is one of our small business areas where we can increase our activities. As for Long-haul transport and National Distribution, of course this will depend on GDP development in a country.” Electric vehicles are increasingly being used in many of the sectors we cover. Mommertz explains that he is not overly concerned by the disruption to the development of this cutting edge technology because of COVID-19. “Investing in these kinds of new technologies needs a lot of resources and we have had short term delays in our research and development, but we stick to it because this is our future. Customer behaviour in this area is not significantly changing. Of course, depending on the economic situation of a certain country, it will continue as part of renewing public transport (strategies) – we may even see a faster process. Will a customer in UAE or in Saudi Arabia invest immediately in a battery driven vehicle? I think this will last a little bit longer.” Finally, it is time for the industry veteran to face the multi-billion dollar question. Can we be optimistic for 2021? “Taking 2020 as the baseline, we will see a smooth recovery. The Middle East depends on government spending and what we are observing is a readiness to support industry and to spend from the public budget. The sun will rise up again.” OCTOBER 2020

hink of Ford pickups, and it’s the F-Series that usually springs to mind. It’s not surprising really – the truck has been the best-selling vehicle in the US for 43 years, and halo products like the F-150 Raptor have helped cement the truck as a firm favourite with off-road enthusiasts in the region. markets – serving as a vehicle for work. Where US-owners enjoy the size, power, strength and versatility of the F-150 as a work and recreational truck, the Middle East owner requires the same traits in a vehicle that is also economical to run and focused on function. For Ford, that truck is the Ranger. In markets where they’re both available, the Ranger trades blows with the Toyota Hilux as best-selling pickup in both the commercial and private sectors. gear about on weekends. At its core, the message at the time was tough-not-rough – with an exceptionally strong ladder-frame chassis design complimented by engine and cabin mounts designed to isolate the occupants from typical vibrations and noise associated with vehicles in the segment. Refinement was key: light commercial vehicle users appreciated the quieter cabin and smoother ride that came from Ford’s attention to detail in addressing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) design. Further refinements to the truck followed during a mid-cycle refresh – sound deadening under the bonnet helped to reduce powertrain, wind and road noise, making for a quieter cabin; updates to the engine management system helped to improve diesel performance and efficiency; and smart aerodynamic design also helped to further cut wind noise. New hydraulically damped engine mounts were also used to combat engine vibrations low frequency vibrations created by diesel engines Other features also helped propel the Ford Ranger to the forefront at the time. It was fitted with a battery charge system that made the most of deceleration, engaging the alternator on over-run to charge the battery rather than charging when the engine is under load. It was the first pickup to be awarded a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP for adult occupant protection and child occupant protection. Today, Ford says the Ranger gives buyers a smarter truck that is packed with advanced technologies that help drivers work smarter, safer and achieve more. Powerful and efficient engines help business owners to carry more while saving on fuel bills; impressive four wheel-drive performance and water-wading capabilities help them to go further off-grid when required; and class-leading towing capability (up to 3.5 tons, depending on model) and cargo box capacity (up to 1425kg) means they can take more equipment and goods when they do. High-end models like the XLT and Wildtrak even come equipped with technology packages like Ford’s SYNC 3 system – which helps drivers to remain productive on the go, and assisted parking features. The truck’s toughness should resonate well with fleet operators in the region – just as it has elsewhere. Ford markets the Ranger as truck for both work and play and splits those into five trim levels the Base, XL and XLS for more commercial applications – and the XLT and WIldtrak which up the comfort and technology levels considerably. Not surprisingly, the Ford Ranger is well established as one of South Africa’s top sellers locally and dominates the extremely popular double cab segment. highest-ever installed production capacity for the Ford Ranger pickup and the Everest seven-seater sport utility vehicle (SUV). “The past ten years have seen a complete transformation of Ford’s manufacturing operations in South Africa,” said Neale Hill, Managing Director, Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region. “We have progressed from a low-volume multi-vehicle business primarily serving the domestic industry to becoming a high-volume single platform manufacturer that is the Ranger production source for 148 markets globally. “The award-winning Ranger has been the key driver of this success, with ever-growing local and international demand resulting in extensive upgrades and improvements to our facilities to significantly increase our production capacity over the years,” Hill added. “From the installed capacity of 110,000 units when we began assembling the newgeneration Ford Ranger in 2011, we now have the capacity to build 168,000 vehicles annually to meet future requirements.” Investment in the global export programme commenced in 2009 to transform the local production facilities, comprising the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, as well as the Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth, into a high-volume flexible single platform operation for the trend-setting new-generation Ranger and its Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel engines. In 2016, Ford invested in further expansion of Ranger production and, notably, for the local assembly of the sophisticated Everest SUV for South Africa as well as for export to markets across the Sub-Saharan Africa region. Ford has had a presence in Port Elizabeth since 1923. The Struandale Engine Plant was established in 1964 and currently produces two engine lines: the Duratorq TDCi 2.2- and 3.2-litre turbodiesel engine, and a new generation 2.0-litre bi-turbo and single turbo diesel engine. The Duratorq programme was launched in 2011 to produce engines for Ranger. Components from suppliers in the UK, Germany, France and Brazil are machined at the plant and then either assembled and sent to Silverton to be fitted to Ranger pickups or Everest SUVs or Kansas City in the US to power the Transit van. Struandale also supplies assembled engines to Russia, Turkey and Italy. The plant also supplies machined engine component kits (cylinder heads, block and crankshaft) to Ford plants in Thailand and Argentina. Approximately 410 Duratorq engines are assembled and around 850 component kits are machined every day. Installed capacity for the Duratorq TDCi program has grown from the original 220,000 machined component sets (cylinder head, block and crankshaft) in 2011 to 280,000 by the end of 2018. Engine assembly capacity increased from 75,000 to 130,000 engines per annum over the same period. The second engine line was formed as part of the ZAR3-billion (USD200 million) investment in Silverton and Struandale in 2016. Construction of the new assembly hall started in 2017, and job one rolled off the line In November 2018. Since then, staff have assembled close to 52,000 2.0-litre single and bi-turbo diesel engines. Using components machined by Ford Dagenham in the UK, the plant uses an automated sub-assembly line for the cylinder head. Highly skilled assembly crew members are employed on the line, using meconstructionnews.com

of its 2.2-litre Duratorq diesel engine by handing it to a pair of Dubai content creators and asking them to see just how far they could get on a single tank of fuel. Completed at the height of the Middle East summer, the pair brimmed the 80-litre tank and drove the Ranger on 250km loops of the northern emirates, covering sections of motorway and mountain road driving. Ahmed Jaffar, who drove throughout, said, “At first, we thought 1,000 kilometres would be a very ambitious target. But as the day wore on, and the Ranger indicated that we could easily exceed that, it became apparent that we were in for far more time behind the wheel than we anticipated.”

In fact, having covered 864 km in the first day of driving and still with a quarter tank of diesel left, the pair were very confident of breaking their initial 1,000 km target as they set out on the second day. Little did they know that the remaining fuel would actually push them to add another 388 kilometres to their challenge, for a total distance of an incredible 1252 kilometres. “When we started out, we didn’t really know what we were in for. We thought we might make 500 kilometres, maybe a little further – but to not only break that 1,000 kilometre mark but smash it, was really something,” said Jaffar. “It’s a test I’ll remember for a long time to come.”

In addition, the sleeve can withstand an extreme long-term stress.

drivers’ cabs with sleeve air springs. Continental claims the HiTemp solution performs reliably even under extreme temperatures According to Continental, truck drivers often cover vast distances, with the vehicles frequently experiencing a wide range of different regions and climate zones over their service life. It says that the new system will keep the driver’s cab safe and comfortable in the summer heat.

“The air springs meet the increasing demands on truck components: the stricter exhaustgas standards heat up the engine compartment to a much greater extent, ensuring extremely hot operating conditions,” explained Continental. “The advantage of the sleeve air springs is that they allow for easier heat management and offer the manufacturer greater flexibility when defining the installation space of the cab mount. “There is no need for a heat shield to protect the air springs against intense heat radiation. This makes the spring function significantly cheaper than previous solutions – reduced idle time and lower repair costs are further advantages. The development of this technology marks an important milestone on the way to establishing the HiTemp sleeve air spring as the standard in the commercial vehicle industry.” OCTOBER 2020 25

hen it comes to electric vehicles, it may be a surprise to learn that it’s been around since the 1800s when the first car was made. It’s been a bumpy road since then but with the evolution of technology and growing environmental issues, the next chapter of the electric vehicles’ story is set to be a significant one. With technology transforming the industry worldwide, the automotive landscape is changing in so many ways that manufacturers are rethinking its strategies to building vehicles for the future. At Hyundai it’s no different. We are already looking at the wider picture because vehicles 26 OCTOBER 2020

running on fossil fuels, no matter how popular they have been in previous years, will not be the number one choice going forward. We are already seeing the beginning of this trend with electric vehicles on its way to becoming the next big thing. In the first 10 months of 2019, electric vehicle sales accounted for 2.2 per cent of the global vehicle market. In 2018, there were more than 5 million electric vehicles worldwide – an increase of 63 per cent from the previous year. So, why has there been an increased interest in electric vehicles? There are a number of reasons but it’s largely down to more people being aware of the environmental benefits such as the reduction of emissions that contribute to climate change and cheaper operating costs. Governments across the world are also

playing a central role in encouraging the growth of electric vehicles. For instance, the UK is preparing its transition towards electric vehicles by bringing forward its intention to end of the sale of new combustion engine-powered cars and vans to 2035. In Dubai, owners can now charge their electric vehicles for free until the end of 2021 as part of a move by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and Road Transport Authority to boost sales. It’s encouraging signs and even more so that by 2040, more half of all new vehicles on the road are set to be electric. However, questions still remain especially among consumers whether electric vehicles are the way forward. his summer saw Thermo King stake a claim for producing the world’s most advanced refrigerated trailer, the pragmatically named, Advancer. The Trane Technologies ownedcompany said its three different versions, the A-360, A-400, and A-500, and offers an all-new hybrid design architecture that creates a new standard for performance, temperature control, and fleet connectivity. “At Thermo King, we understand that with being a leader comes the responsibility to advance the technology and capability for refrigerated transport. Since we started the industry over 80 years ago, we have been innovating to meet and exceed customer needs, improve efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint of our products,” said Francesco Incalza, president of Thermo King Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Today, Advancer adds another milestone to our history. By introducing this completely redesigned trailer platform, we are challenging what is possible in our industry. This is our vision for the future of trailer refrigeration, and this future is now here for our customers.” During development, the company drew up a list of hundreds of features and claims that the finished product moves trailer technology beyond incremental enhancements. It also claims it can pay back a fleet’s investment within two years with fuel savings up to 30% while going far beyond current expectations on uptime. Senior product manager David O’Gorman says Thermo King went back to the drawing board to ask itself what does the future look like? “I feel like a kid in a sweet shop,” he says and then explains that Advancer is the first-ever refrigeration unit with a fully variable air flow that is independent of the engine speed. “I can almost hear you saying ‘what on earth does that mean’? Fully variable air flow means the highest airflow on the market, the fastest pull down in the market, the most precise temperature control in the market, and last but not least the lowest fuel consumption in the and if that wasn’t enough now, you can both see and measure your fuel consumption. How cool is that?” Advancer uses a 48V DC mild hybrid technology brought over from other parts of the automotive industry, and O’Gorman claims the adoption of the system, means they can harness the power from a lowvoltage motor generator as required. “We only deliver that power where

and when it is needed,” he adds, before explaining the entire unit has been designed to reflect the maximising of up time that fleets need to stay profitable. “We had a list of over 700 requirements and that was the short list. 700! Can you imagine how many were on the full list?” He asks, then adds: “One single day off the road can result in significant operational issues, financial loss or disappointed customers. As a result, Advancer has a modular future-proof architecture, fewer components, less moving components, easier access to serviceable items. It has onboard intelligence to predict service needs and integrated solar power to keep you charged. I could go on for another hour at least but I don’t want to put you to sleep!” Thermo King is confident it can replicate the data coming out of its test labs and trials, including in excess of a million kilometres of running in places as far flung as the Australian Outback, Russia and the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa. “We have tens of thousands of running hours in both diesel and electric mode without any failure so far,” he explains. “The bottom line is that this unit was designed to keep you on the road because that’s what matters. We predict a 60% reduction in unscheduled maintenance (that’s 6-0, he affirms). That number wasn’t just pulled from the ether, we have the proof. As a measure of the success, we’ve already received orders from some of the field trial customers and they don’t even want to give us back the field test units. In a nutshell, we’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback.” Trane Technologies committed to

reducing the carbon footprint of its customers by 1 Gigatonne by 2030 by encouraging use of its products and services. The team at its vehicle air-conditioning subsidiary are under no doubt when it comes to the task ahead. “One gigaton is very big and it represents the annual CO2 emissions of Italy France and UK combined it,” comments Laurent Debias, product management and marketing leader for Thermo King EMEA, adding that the newly launched range “shows our ambitions to make this a better world for all of us and for the coming generation.” He says that Advancer needs 60%-less energy compared to traditional production processes. Pull-down time is up to 40% faster than the next best alternative on the market, he claims, before explaining that the unit should deliver dramatic savings in fuel and emissions. “Imagine how much you save on fuel and time by the way? But that’s another story. On the road, you decrease the fuel consumption by 30%....30% less fuel and means 30% less CO2 emission. It’s all adds up to an impressive 65% of reduction in emissions. This means 50 trees planted for every unit, every year.” The authority that governs green regulation in its home territory is the European Commission and, like other countries and cities, it is enforcing ever-increasingly tighter regulations on Refrigerated Transport and trucks. Whether it is limitations to night deliveries, the introduction of low emission zones, ultra low emission zones, or DSL bands of emission tax, he says, Advancer will pass all current and planned regulation. TRUCKS STOPPED

The RTA’s Trucks Rest Stop Project could be the end for roadside respites

T

he sight of trucks stopping on the roadside in Dubai could soon be a thing of the past with the Trucks Rest Stop Project in Dubailand on the Emirates Road passing nearly 55% of its construction, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced. The facility is being constructed in partnership with the private sector and is said to be the first integrated truck stop zone that meets the basic and daily needs of heavy vehicle drivers across the emirate. The project is being developed by the Al Sahraa Group and spans five hectares and includes 100 parking slots for trucks, as well as other facilities to serve the basic and daily needs of truck drivers. A specialised technical testing centre for heavy vehicles will also be included. The RTA says the station aims to sort

out issues related to the parking of trucks besides highways and in residential areas. It will also enable the RTA to meet the rising demand for truck stops, considering that trucks make about 145 thousand trips and lift about 3 million tons every day in Dubai, the statement added. RTA director-general and chairman Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer said preliminary processes preceding the construction phase such as obtaining non-objection certificates, leveling the land, protecting utility lines, and obtaining the final building permit from the concerned authorities have been fully completed. He pointed out that the construction of the station will enhance traffic safety, reduce trucks-related accidents, and streamline the traffic flow during the trucks ban timings. The RTA chief also said the project supported the Dubai Silk Road strategy

encapsulated in the 50-year Charter of Dubai, and the Silk Road Economic Belt initiative. “The UAE is a prominent station in the Economic Silk Road and is the gateway to the Middle East and Africa in the project that links the commercial markets in the region.” The RTA commissioned a comprehensive study of trucks movement in Dubai along with site surveys, interviews and workshops with the concerned departments and companies. It also developed a schematic model to predict future truck movements, and assessed the need for dry ports, or goods assembly and distribution centres. Ahead of the project, it also evaluated the policies and timings of the current trucks movement ban and the need for dedicated roads for trucks in addition to all organisational and structural aspects relating to the management of trucks and goods movement in Dubai.
