FAST TRUCK CHARGING

According to Scania, with 130 kW DC charging, the five battery pack array can be charged in less than 55 minutes and the nine batteries in less than 100 minutes.

MAKING PROGRESS

Over the past few years Scania has taken several significant steps forward in the development of electric vehicle technology.

says the company.

The all-important charging process is handled through a CCS charging connector which can hook the truck to the electric grid.

According to Scania, with 130 kW DC charging, the five battery packs will be charged in less than 55 minutes and the nine batteries in less than 100 minutes. The truck can also be charged through regenerative braking.

Transporters interested in power take off (PTO) should note that the DC box mounted on the chassis provides up to 60 kW PTO for body auxiliaries. This again, represents a shift from the normal set-up where PTO is controlled by connecting auxiliaries to an interface that is usually located on the gearbox or engine.

EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR UPGRADES AND UPDATES AS MILD HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (MHEV) TECH COMES TO RANGE

Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology is available on the Jaguar F-Pace for the first time as the new flagship model gets an enhanced intelligent all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmission.

With an assertive new exterior, beautifully crafted all-new interior, latest generation Pivi Pro infotainment and MHEV technology, the new Jaguar F-PACE is more luxurious, connected and efficient.

The new exterior design gives the award-winning F-PACE performance SUV a cleaner, more assured presence, featuring a new sculpted bonnet with a wider power bulge and smoother, more precisely defined surfaces. The new bonnet also contributes to a more striking finish by reducing the number of shutlines on the front of the car.

An enlarged grille features Jaguar’s heritage logo-inspired ‘diamond’ detailing, while the side fender vents now feature the iconic Leaper emblem, demonstrating the exceptional attention to detail found right across the vehicle. A new front bumper with redesigned air intakes and dark mesh details visually widen the new F-PACE for a more assured dynamic presence.

New super slim all-LED quad headlights with ‘Double J’ Daytime Running Light (DRL) signatures, which are available with optional Pixel LED technology, deliver increased resolution and brightness. With Adaptive Driving Beam capability, which evaluates the road ahead and automatically adapts the high beam light to mask oncoming traffic or traffic signs, the system can create varying light beam patterns by selecting different LED segments to optimise visibility and minimise risk of distracting other drivers.

All-wheel drive is standard across all F-PACE models and Intelligent Driveline Dynamics provides rear-wheel drive biased performance, with the ability to vary torque to individual axles almost instantly depending on conditions.

Auto Vehicle Hold meanwhile smooths operation by holding the brakes for an unlimited period of time when stationary on a gradient, gently releasing the brakes only when the driver depresses the accelerator to drive away.

RANGE ROVER VELAR GETS PHEV OPTION

MID-SIZED SUV ALSO GAINS ADVANCED NEW INFOTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY AND ELEGANT DESIGN FEATURES

The Range Rover Velar, the mid-size luxury SUV, which sits between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport in the family lineup, offers customers the perfect balance of design and technology – now with electric power.

The new 2.0-litre four-cylinder P400e plug-in hybrid offers a smooth and refined drive, producing a combined 404PS and 640Nm of torque from its 300PS petrol engine and 105kW electric motor, with an impressive 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds). A 17.1Wh lithiumion battery, located under the boot floor, can be charged to 80% in just 30 minutes†† using a fast DC charge point, or 1 hour 40 minutes using a standard 7kW wallbox. A new family of 3.0-litre straight-six Ingenium engines is also introduced to the Range Rover Velar for the first time. The latest generation of smooth and efficient petrol and diesel* engines are available with 48-volt mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) technology for reduced fuel consumption and heightened refinement.

The MHEV system uses a Belt integrated Starter Generator (BiSG) in the engine bay to harvest energy usually lost under deceleration, which

is then stored in a 48V lithium-ion battery located beneath the rear loadspace. It is able to redeploy the stored energy to assist the engine when accelerating away, while also delivering a more refined and responsive stop/start system.

Nick Rogers, executive director, Product Engineering at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “It has been fifty years since the introduction of the pioneering Range Rover in 1970, and now every family member is electrified with our awesome plug-in hybrid technology. Electrified powertrains and cleaner mild hybrid diesel engines mean the Velar is an even more efficient and sustainable option for our customers.”

Also available is the new secondgeneration wearable Activity Key, which can totally replace the traditional key fob when necessary.

A SPORTS LEGEND NISSAN Z SPEEDS TO 50TH ANNIVERSARY

GENERATION Z PROTO IS COMING

NISSAN READIES UPDATE OF CLASSIC SPORTS CAR

Nissan has unveiled the Z Proto, signaling the company’s intent to launch a new generation of the legendary Z sports car. Shown at a virtual event beamed around the world from the Nissan Pavilion in Yokohama, the prototype car features a new design inside and out, as well as a V-6 twin turbocharged engine with a manual transmission.

First hinted at in a video named “Nissan A-Z” in May, the Nissan Z Proto pays full respect to 50 years of Z heritage. At the same time, it’s a thoroughly modern sports car.

“The Z, as a pure sports car, represents the spirit of Nissan,” said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida. “It’s a key model in our Nissan NEXT transformation plan, and it’s proof of our ability to do what others don’t dare to do, from A to Z. As a Z fan myself, I’m excited to announce that the next Z is coming.”

A global community of fans young and old attended today’s virtual unveiling. Members of the Z Club in Japan, ZCON participants in Nashville, Tennessee, and enthusiasts in various other markets tuned in for the event. Penned and developed by the design team in Japan, the Z Proto boasts a fresh exterior design with a silhouette that calls back to the original model with a bright yellow pearlescent paint paint scheme and black roof.

Renault Trucks launches special used T X-Port truck for MEA region

FULL EURO 6 TO EURO 3 CONVERSIONS PLUS A RAFT OF REGION-SPECIFIC FEATURES INCLUDING OPTIDRIVER AS STANDARD

Renault Trucks has launched the T X-Port, a specially converted and certified used truck for the African and Middle Eastern markets.

The converted truck is based on the 11l Renault Trucks T Euro 6 model and comes with a Euro 3 engine which has been fitted at the brand’s Used Trucks Factory in Bourg-en-Bresse, France.

“This is a Renault Trucks T Euro 6 model, converted to Euro 3 using strict industrial processes in the company’s specialised Used Trucks Factory workshops, in order to guarantee the highest level of pollution reduction in force in these markets. A Euro 6 used truck driven without the addition of Adblue would be permanently damaged and its emissions would equate to those of a Euro 0 vehicle,” explained Renualt Trucks in a statement.

The manufacturer further explained that the conversion starts with the dismantling of Euro 6 components, namely the silencer and AdBlue components, which are then sent to the manufacturer’s recycling network: “Operators at the Renault Trucks Used Trucks Factory then install the Euro 3 components and the reinforced filtration system. The software and manufacturer’s documentation are updated, allowing the vehicle to be recognised throughout the network with its new features.”

Other modifications also include the reinforcement of the air and diesel filters to improve the base truck’s ability to cope with the fuel differences and environment challenges of the region. Ground clearance has also been increased by 30 mm at the front and 20 mm at the rear.

The automated Optidriver transmission – which selects the right gear at the right time according to speed, load and driving style in order to guarantee better mobility and greater comfort while driving – is fitted as standard. The truck as a whole, the cab and every element of the powertrain have been designed to promote fuel savings, says Renault Trucks.

The windscreen is inclined by 12° and the cab itself is trapezoid in shape, being 2.35 metres wide at the front and 2.50 metres wide at the back, which improves its drag coefficient (cx) by up to 12%: “Enhanced productivity is provided by a GCW (gross combined weight) rating of up to 60 t and a fuel tank capacity of up to 1,475 litres for long journeys.”

The Euro 3-certified Renault Trucks T X-Port comes with a 12-month international manufacturer’s warranty that covers all incidents relating to the engine, gearbox and axles and is valid throughout Renault Trucks sales and service outlets in the region.

WALK ROUND: THE NEW ZETROS Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ Johannes Faatz takes T&FME on a tour of the new desert powerhouse Zetros

Mercedes-Benz MENA says its new generation of Zetros has been completely re-worked but remains available in Euro III and Euro V variants for markets with poor fuel quality.

The legendary extreme off-roader is a mix of the old and the new with its all-wheel drive 4x4 or 6x6 set-up joined by a new 6x4 configuration which begins production this month. A 4x2 version is also expected to debut in Q1 2021.

Customers in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America get a Euro III and Euro V emission engine that has been boosted to 12.8 litre engine and capable of delivering as much as 350 kW (476 hp) in Euro III and up to 375 kW (510 hp) in Euro V.

All vehicles are equipped with a 16-speed manual gearbox with a striking 2400 Nm of torque at the highest engine output. All vehicles are available in three different wheelbases as well as different weight variants. The cabin interior features numerous detail improvements, such as a re-designed instrument panel and an electronic parking brake. It keeps key characteristics of the predecessor, like the fully-fledged middle seat, as optional equipment. MercedesBenz describes the Zetros as an “expert in transporting goods in tough or inaccessible terrain” – and it certainly looks the part.

On the outside, the new model generation retains its distinctive and striking cabbehind-engine design but now has a restyled radiator grille, which, thanks to optimised airflow guidance, ensures even more effective

cooling. The new Zetros keeps its signature characteristics with a low silhouette and the cab behind the engine concept, in addition to an optional fording ability of up to 800 mm.

The Zetros is a heavy-duty truck, which has been developed for demanding transport tasks involving high payloads. That is why it is often used for delivering supplies to remote regions, as well as in energy exploration and in forestry operations. It can be used all over the world across all extreme climates – from hot desert regions right up to the Arctic. Just as before, the new Zetros remains available in Euro III and Euro V variants for markets with poor fuel.
