CHAPTER 1 THE DISCOVERING OF THE PARK The Host park project starts from the idea of hospitality and the Forlanini park is a combination of hospitality and fragmentation at the same time. Starting from a vision of the entire city of Milan, the park is located in the area adjacent to the Linate airport, the Forlanini district and the Ortica district, all of which do not 'consider' it as a resource but as an 'unseen' element. The Grande Parco Forlanini meanwhile remains an active reality, where the centre of the immigrants of Milan are, Cascinet, the reality of a 'young' farmstead and the city of Novegro, which offers possibilities of wide spaces. This first chapter of analysis wants to define some information collected during the various inspections, starting from the width of this area and its natural resources. From the interviews it appears that the park is not known and perceived by people. People know the Idroscalo and the Forlanini park, but do not have the perception of what we define as Grande Parco Forlanini. Another analysis concerns accessibility, the area is accessible, but we perceive a gap towards the city. Subsequently the analysis of the activities, there are many activities in the area that can become a fundamental resource for change, as well as open space and the presence of large green areas. We wanted to schematize with a series of diagrams and a classification to outline, not only the denser areas of activity and population but also the different functional categories to be able to use them in a more specific design context.
PROFILING THE GRANDE PARCO FORLANINI The location
PROFILING THE GRANDE PARCO FORLANINI The accessibility
The Grande Parco Forlanini is surrounded by numeros public transportation facilities. At present it has 6 different bus lines. These bus lines and bus stops are providing easy access to different parts of the Grande Parco Forlanini. And these bus lines come directly from different direction of Milan city. The most easy access way is the M4 line, which is under construction at the momemnt. M4 line will have 2 stops in the Grande Parco Forlanini. It will make the park much more accessible.

Comfortable distance for walk / from car parking lot
These two diagrams on the left shows the Grande Parco Forlanini covered by 500 meters circles. 500 meters is a comfortable distance for average people to cross. Bus stop represents center of the circle. As you can see from the bus stops you can get most of the area of the park by 500 meters-walk. In the scond diagram, the center of the circles are the public car parking spots of the Grande Parco Forlanini. These circles shows that after you get to the park by bus or by car you can easly go to the most of the park by foot.
PROFILING THE GRANDE PARCO FORLANINI The size and activities inside
=
The Grande Parco Forlanini is a very big park that includes the Idroscalo, Parco Forlanini and the field area between the Ortica and Forlanini. Because of the size and geographic position, it is holding differnt type of activities.

PROFILING THE GRANDE PARCO FORLANINI Interview
To understand the Park we went to the Park and made interview with 42 people at different parts of the Grande Parco Forlanini. During the interview we asked some typical question to understand better what do the people think about the park. How frequently do they come to the park? What kind of transportation do they use to get to the park? What they like to do in the park? Etc... After reviewing the interviewed candidates we made statistics on the interview data and selected the important information to understand the stuation. Where do they come from and by what transportation?

CHAPTER 2 SELECTION OF INTERESTING AREAS Grande Parco Forlanini should be a part of cities everyday life. We tried to satisfy some needs of Milan and the area around the Grande Forlanini Park and that the new project it will be a key to connect the outside areas and also the city. Milan is a city full of art, performance and creative people, but also a city with the necessity of space. In this park the ‘space’ is a plus value and to improve it we also need people that want to make it more lively. We considered that the Grande Parco Forlanini can be an ideal space to host all of these activities. For this reason, we named our project THE HOST PARK, that can host music, sport and performance art inside and make the best use of the existing spaces in it. At the previous stage we began with surveying through on-the-spot investigation. Through analysis and interpretation of the site we found out that there are some unused or redundant buildings around the Grande Parco Forlanini. Some of them are temporary buildings that will be free after the metro construction. And the most part of these redundant buildings are some industrial buildings. They are in good condition and have a lot of space. For taking full advantages of these existing buildings, we classified them by their quality. Since we want to reuse these buildings for the project, we took spatial size, building age, facilities, modifiability and the quality as the key point of our classification and analysis. Afterwards we analyzed the requirements of the activities in our project idea: Music, Street sport and the Performative art. Because different activities have different requirements of the space. By these analyses and comparisons, we have a clear picture about the potential of the buildings.
CONCEPT The advantages and opportunities
Grande Parco Forlanini has plenty of advantages that can be used to serve the city, at the same time we tried to find some needs of Milan and the area around the Grande Parco Forlanini that can be reached or met by the new vision of the park.

After a series of analyzes and inspections of the area, its multi-functionality, multi-ethnicity and multiplicity have prompted us to think of Host. Host means hosting and welcoming, with special attention to communities, both new and old. Milan is a city full of art, performer and creativity people, but also a city with the necessity of space. In this park the ‘space’ is a plus value and to improve it we also need people that want to make it more lively. We considered that the Grande Parco Forlanini can be an ideal space for host all of these kind of activities. For this reason, we named our project THE HOST PARK, hoping it to host music, sport and performance art inside and make the best use of the existing spaces in it.

CONCEPT Space selection/outdoor Classification of the availbale buildings
Big open-space, Close to the Road and Easy access Suitable for holding big events and concerts.
Covered open-space: Suitable for holding street sport activities
At the same time, we analyzed the available outdoor spaces and other existing elements to find some interesting and valuable spaces for our project. And there are two different spaces that we consider as valuable. One is the big open space that for now is being used for the metro construction. After the metro construction it will be very suitable for big events like music concerts because of the easy accessible position and unobstructed sigh. Meanwhile there is no high-density residence and offices in the disturbance range.
Exhibition area: Suitable for holding big indoor show and performance activities
Thanks to the big size of Viadotto Parchi, it has a big semi-open space under. It’s a nice space with the green elements around and the “shelter” above, but because it is not noticed from the highway it can’t be used as demanding function. The type of the space is ideal area for younglings to do sport or other motion activities such as skateboarding and parkour. Near the Novegro, there is an exhibition area, that can hold different kind of events and shows inside. It would be really helpful if we had performance art workshop around.
CONCEPT Space selection
Block for host street sport activities: • Street sport trainning • Street sport performing • Realated servieces and activities
Block for host music activities: • Music trainning • Music performing • Music events and concerts
Block for host performance art: • Performance art studio • Performancing spaces • Craft and other art work shop
After the full analysis and classification of the potential buildings and area in the Grande Parco Forlanini, we chose three different area for the three-specific different kind of activities by the different character. These three areas will work as three theme blocks: Block for music, Block for street sport and Block for performance art. We tried to make the quality and character of these spaces in order to meet the requirement of the selected activities in the highest level.
CONCEPT Master plan
CHAPTER 3 STARTING FROM THE STREETS The street is the real public space that we have in all the cities. In this chapter we want to explain the strategy that we are following, starting from the requalification of Novegro’s streets. First of all we need to identify the streets: main importance and secondary; the city of Novegro presents one main street that connects via Corelli to the airport but with the arrival of the future bridge that will reach the Idroscalo this situation will change. We established the work first on Via Novegro and requalified it with an abacus of elements (green, furniture, light, pattern) and also gave more importance to the bus stops that are crucial for people that live there ( in order to reach the city, everyday). Novegro has the opposite problem of parking that we have in Milan. There is a lot of space and people tend to park in the street. But we know that in the area we have also a lot of parking lot for the airport; the idea is to use these zones and move the cars from the streets to the authorized parkings. Then we want to trigger something, in this case an opportunity to work, with a lot of common spaces as coworking areas. A covered square and some laboratories in order to bring people together and to make the area attractive for young people and for people that want a different place to work. We start from the idea of industrial building of Novegro that can be useful, first for coworking and then to make a creativity hub for art, show, dance; all the disciplines that create a performance. The last operation is about the time line and the expectation that we will have in the future.

5 POINTS STRATEGY PLAN A TIME LINE TRANSFORMATION
TIME LINE AND ACTORS This time line tranformation it’s a sum up of the abacus of element that we want to use, mixed together the trigger and all the buildings that we want to reactivate. Via Novegro will be the first one with stage, trees, pattern and light, it will be the central part of all the city and a very strong connection between the Exhibition center and the Idroscalo. With the shadow in the second draw we want to suggest the spread of the changing of the street and also the idea that this type of intervention need to keep place in a time sequence. Starting from Novegro we want to create an Hub of arts in wich people have space to show some particular ability or only stay and see the others. We consider also the actors that takes part in this project in order to understand in wich way the pre-existance activity are involved and what is the change in time. If in the first part the project starts from the trigger, than we can see that we have the spread of the activities. With the involvment of community we can make cascina Novegro a good place to host assosiation and with the starting point of the trigger we can image that, in the last part of our time line, the area of coworking can be spread out of the Hub and all the entire Hub can be full of place in which people can practice art, dance, theater; for a city that becomes more than a city.

PERFORMATIVE MUSIC AND SPORT 3.2 Block of Music The same design procedures are to be applied to the areas of sport and music. For the music block, starting from the street we want to activate a pedestrian and bicycle line in order to create the good conditions to start with the trigger. The Crazy jungle building will become a music and laboratory center, in which people will create their own instrument or produce music. The neighbourhood school of music and the ‘ScuoleCiviche Di Milano-Fondazione Di Partecipazione’ can have a place to stay and to share music, in which it will be possible to organise events ( also with the collaboration of Cascinet ). When the metro will comes we have all the conditions to host the music village. With the reusing of the containers we can create a place for community in which will also be possible to cultivate their own urban garden.
3.3 Block of Sport In the block of sport we are planning to build a pedestrian line and a bridge on the Lambro to connect the two main areas of this project. The triggering in this case is about open spaces. One is the space under the bridge and the other one is a new adventure park that permit the relation with the river with a different point of view. In this way the adventure park will be the first park over a real river and the idea is also to make the river area more visible and recognizable. Of course we need to requalify the river and some policies to activate also the industrial area near it, in order to create the conditions to make sport activity indoor. When the entire trigger starts to work the last step is about the real meaning of host: an Hostel. The area near the immigrants accommodation will host some buildings in which artist and people from all over the world can stay, with the improvement of facilities there is the possibility to improve also the quality of this area and create comfortable green zone for everybody.

THE STORY OF GRANDE PARCO FORLANINI The par k For lanini only 20 minutes from the center is one of those places that makes you think of beautiful things while the realit y is that for years ever yone has taken their own piece. They all thought of their own interest in an area that should be for ever yone. Af ter a ser ies of analyzes and inspec tions of the area, it is precisely its multi-func tionalit y, its multi- ethnicit y and its multiplicit y that prompted us to think of Host. Host means hosting and welcoming, with special attention, for once, in the histor y of this par k , to people, to communities; new and old. The design focus wants to consider a ser ies of weak nesses and voids (but not morphological) to fill and the par ticular it y of this projec t is that all that is needed is already in the area, in its contex t and in the beaut y of a par k that will be reachable by metro line. The most densely areas populated or most potential are those of the street Cavriana, traveled daily and steered on more than one area, the area hosting immigrants, near a br idge and the area of Novegro, a cit y center where the industr y and M r. M oney took almost ever ything to put a car at 8 euros a day. But there are also beautiful realities operating in this vast expanse that we call Grande parco, the farmhouses. And there is another element even more beautiful for the cit y of the woods ver tical ... the space, but the real one, the horizontal one. There are also neighbourhoods, quar ters For lanini with its quiet realit y, one step away from being swallowed up in the freneticism of the metropolis and the Or tica. Then there is the H ydroscalo, the sea of M ilan, that if you go there are all happy, that does not matter how much people are there, if there are illegal bar becues, the water is dir t y, 'see how it was beautiful 10 years ago' but 'we come the same because we get from Peschiera by bike '. S o we thought that maybe, star ting from the residual areas, from the common good of all, without going to eat away other bits from this poor area, something could be done. The street is for ever yone, it is for those who want to take a leisurely walk or want to go fast. The road is where people meet, again as they once did. And since that in Cascinet they make beautiful music and there is also the civic school that will surely want to share, because not star ting from a path of music, we learn to build tools, we ac tivate wor kshops to learn, in which first of all there is the communit y. Where if I do not have a guitar, there is cer tainly someone who lends it to me and if the I talian music has tired me out I can meet many people and play all the music of the wor ld. What then the music of Forlanini par k is not just this. There is also that coming from the highway, from the noise of that cumbersome br idge that then closed it underneath and people go there any way. S o let's open, let's do it that something so bad becomes beautiful, we make sure that people can move around and that the movement of the machines is nothing compared to that of the sk aters of par kour ists, of all those strange things with ropes and those who simply want to look at them, and then that the road really becomes a common good. But let's remember do not stop here because if we wanted to, we could even go to the sea and take a road that passes through Novegro. Because then we must imagine that these are bet ween a railway and an airpor t, but af ter a walk in the romantic fields what do you do dur ing the day? And with all those industr ies, in the evening what do you go out to do? M aybe Novegro is the greatest resource of all because its really has the space ... and then let's tell it to all those ar tists, to all those creative people around M ilan that do not they k now where to go, to professionals, all in a co -wor k ing in Corso G ar ibaldi; let's tell him that in Novegro we have space, that there is a cowor k ing that does not make you spend it half of what you ear n and that there are a lot of places where ever yone can express what he wants, dance, theatre, ar t ... let's tell him that in the evening there are events, and that you do not have to go to M agnolia or M c D onald in front of Europar k , there are children who go to school and want safe streets, with big sidewalks and green spaces, and that make the Novegro far mhouse beautiful with their designs. Let's say that even if we are near the airpor t there will be a metro, a lot of space and a healthy place, e that if they want the sea then just cross the road. I t is an imaginable and possible future, you just have to star t.
