Another year in the books Children’s Classic remains popular fundraiser

No one's really sure anymore how long the Children's

Classic has been going on – maybe 25 years, maybe more – but one thing is for sure: It's more popular than ever.

The event – from booking those coveted appointments to the special publica-

tion's release – remains one of the most-anticipated things about the late winter/early spring season and, here at The Leader, our phones begin ringing with questions about the release date in February. It really is a great problem to have because it means the great folks of Tipton County are still interested in helping those who need it!

Wait, you thought it was about the pictures? It's about so much more! A por-

tion of the proceeds from the photos is donated to the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse. To date, that donation is more than $250,000!

We – along with our partners, InSouth Bank and Richard and Phil Ramsey –

The Children's Classic has been appearing in The Leader for 25 years now.

Over two and a half decades, thousands of children 6 and under have appeared in its pages. The number has grown from 30 that first year to more than 500 now.

It's consistently one of the most popular publications The Leader publishes.

What's also been consistent is the Children's Classic title sponsor. InSouth Bank has been the sponsor for much of that time.

“It's such an important cause,” said Kelley Gray, who is the assistant vice president and branch adminis-

trator at InSouth in Covington.

Over the years, that has added up to more than $250,000.

And InSouth has been a big part of that.

Since becoming the title sponsor, InSouth has paid the sitting fee for its employees' children and grandchildren, meaning the bank has given thousands of dollars to the Carl Perkins Center.

“It gets our employees involved,” Gray said. “It's always been a big thing for us.”

Gray's two children, Rylee, 20, and Wesley, 17, are too old now to be in the publication, but Gray still enjoys it.

sponsor spotlight: InSouth Bank all the kids,” Gray said. “You see kids you knew having kids in it now. We always want to be involved in this.”

The Children's Classic is just one of the ways InSouth gets involved in the community. The bank is involved in March of Dimes, many Covington-Tipton County Chamber of Commerce endeavors and the Carl Perkins Center Dinner and Auction.

InSouth has a long history in the area.

Right after the Civil War, on Feb. 12, 1869, the Brownsville Savings Bank opened up in Brownsville, Tenn. Things got going with a $100,000 investment.

Four years later, just as a new building went up, the Panic of 1873, known as the Great Depression before the Great Depression of the 1920s and '30s, hit.

Bank runs were common across the United States and many financial institutions closed, but the bank remained open.

Reorganization came in 1899 and the name changed to Brownsville Bank.

As the century turned and Brownsville Bank prospered, Union Savings Bank began to take form in Tipton County. On Dec. 12, 1912, Union Savings Bank of Tipton County was opened in Covington with an investment of $30,000.

Like Brownsville Bank, Union Savings Bank had to prosper while the country went through the Great Depression. Neither bank closed during this time and no customers lost money that was in the bank.

In the middle of the 20th century, both banks expanded. A branch was added on Main Street in Brownsville. When the 1970s rolled around, the Holly Park and Peach Tree branches were opened in Brownsville.

A location was added on Highway 51 in Covington in 1974.

Bank mergers began happening across the country in the 1980s and InSouth Bank was born. Brownsville Bank and Union Savings Bank came together as Independent Southern Bancshares, Inc., a privately-owned holding company based in Brownsville. Thus the 8 children's classic ★ spring 2016

name InSouth.

Millington-based Tennessee Bank and Trust came aboard in 1988.

The banks still operated as separate financial institutions until 10 years later, on Jan. 1, 1998. At that point, all three banks were officially consolidated under the original 1869 Brownsville Savings Bank and became known as InSouth Bank.

That same year, an InSouth Bank was

opened in Atoka. Along with the branch in Millington, the bank established a presence all along Highway 51.
