Brighton grads have variety of plans BY SARAH BROWN

Brighton High School's seniors graduated on May 16. Many have lived here all their lives and have multi-generational families in Tipton County. In this age of Tennessee Promise and Hope scholarships, many local graduates are choosing to use those programs to attend local community colleges and vocational schools. Some plan to enlist in the military. Some are headed straight to a four-year university. Football player Hunter Twisdale is headed to Lion College in Batesville, Ark. to play ball with his brother, Drew. When asked why he was going to the same college as his brother, when he was offered more scholarship money elsewhere he said, “I always wanted to play college

ball with my brother since I was little. This way our parents can see us both play ball at the same time during our home games this coming season.” Hunter plans to study kinesiology at Lion and one day wants to work in the fitness industry. Ashton Mitchell is attending the University of Memphis. Raised by a single mother, she said, “My mom taught me how to be independent and take care of myself.” She isn’t sure of her major yet, but plans to work with kids. After college she plans to travel then settle down. Kendall Alston is enrolling in M.T.S.U. this fall. She plans to major in architecture. She loves creating house plans on her com-

puter program and said seeing the plans come together

is very satisfying. She hopes to transfer, at some point, to art school in Atlanta, where she has previously been accepted. Vanessa York is also headed to the University of Memphis. She has been involved in many clubs, community service, and cheerleading. An undecided major, she wants to travel and love her job. Dalton Dawson is headed to the University of Memphis, planning to major in civil engineering. Working construction jobs has taught him the necessary basics and inspired his major. Dalton isn’t afraid of doing the “dirty work” as he

says now, because he knows it will pay off in the future. He knows he will have to pay his dues and work hard in his future field. Alena Green is enrolling in Dyersburg State Health Science program. She plans to work in the dental field because it will be low stress. She also knows she’s not quite ready to leave home yet, so local community college best suits her for now. Nathan Motz is headed to Dyersburg State this fall. He’s currently working two jobs and is very independent and driven. He knows he wants to work in sports, but as of yet is unsure of his

future career path. He plans to attend the University of Tennessee upon DSCC graduation. Tanner Davis has enlisted in the Navy and will be training as a mineman. He knows he will be traveling the globe his entire career. He said, “I never once considered the military until the recruiters came to our school my junior year. They showed me enlisting was my best option.” He’s looking forward to graduating high school, to begin forging a new life for himself . He’s super excited to see what a wide open future holds for him.

BRIGHTON HIGH SCHOOL ★ CLASS OF 2019

W VALEDICTORIAN

Flowers to study biomedical engineering When Dustie Flowers moved to Tipton County from Arkansas during seventh grade, she didn’t set out to be the valedictorian of Brighton High's class of 2019. A self-proclaimed perfectionist, she said she wouldn’t accept anything less than straight A’s from herself. Her mother has also pushed her towards stellar academics. She was awarded a variety of scholarships from the University of Memphis, where she plans to major in Biomedical Engineering. Dustie lives with her mother, stepfather and her sisters. She shares a close relationship with her dad, but because he lives in Arkansas, doesn’t see him as much as she’d like. She is the ultimate big sister. She said that being a sister is her favorite role, to date, in life. She loves spending time with her younger sisters. Her mother has always encouraged Dustie to set a good example for her sisters to follow. That example being making good grades, working a part time job, and being involved in the marching band. Dustie was the flute section leader. She said she was kind of surprised when she was named valedictorian. Her goal, once she became a sophomore was to be in the top ten of her class. Of her

8 DISCOVER: CLASS OF 2019

33 score on the ACT, she said she has friends who scored higher but aren’t in the top ten, but combined with her consistently high GPA, it pushed her right to the top of her class. It’s a position that suits this born leader well. She said she likes being in leadership positions, be it at home or at her job, or school. Dustie is very driven to be the best at anything she chooses to do. She’s unsure exactly what career path she plans to take. She said she might take the MCATs, or maybe even law school. She loves math, Calculus specifically. It presented her biggest challenge this year and she has a new passion for it. With a degree in Biomedical Engineering she said, “I love helping people. I can help people, but avoid the gross stuff that being a medical doctor might bring.” She hopes to help innovate diabetes aids. She’s been affected by diabetes in loved ones and really wants to help make the disease easier on the patient. This summer she plans to work hard and play some, as she prepares for life on the University of Memphis campus. She chose U of M because wanted to embrace college life, but still be close enough to see her family regularly.

Kozy Hubbard SALUTATORIAN

Introduce us to your family members. My parents are Wayne Hubbard and Tara and Don Taylor. I have two sisters named Kenzie Hubbard and Kelcie Willis. What are your hobbies/favorite pastimes? My hobbies include playing softball, swimming, painting, photography and reading. Do you plan to attend college? If so, where? I plan to attend college at FreedHardeman University in Henderson. What scholarships or honors have you received? I have received the Freed-Hardeman University Trustee's scholarship, Freed-Hardeman Honors Competition scholarship, Baptist Memorial HospitalTipton scholarship, the Ned McWherter scholarship and the HOPE Merit scholarship. What are your future career plans? I plan to major in nursing. What are your future career plans? I chose that major because I want to serve others through faith-based nursing. I want to help make others' lives better through any service I can provide. Through my career, I hope to make a difference in the lives of others. What do you hope to accomplish in life? I plan to become a registered nurse and specialize in pediatric What was your favorite thing about high school? My favorite thing about high school was the diligence of the teachers to help us as students learn the material. Most of my teachers were devoted to helping each student learn the material for their classes and even stay after if any student was struggling and seeking help. What teacher has had the most influence on you and why? Ms. Kim Collier has had the greatest impact on me because she had led me in ways to not only better myself in the subject of math, but as a student and person in general. From a student's perspective, she has a profound impact on each of us that she teachers. She is dedicated to helping those of us who want to learn – not to mention she won the teacher of the year award at our school last year! 10 DISCOVER: CLASS OF 2019

What will you miss the most about high school? The thing I will miss most about high school are the HOSA competitions in which I have had the privilege to compete. I will miss competing at regional, state and national levels with friends and having the opportunity to further my knowledge of the healthcare field. Did you find your academic career challenging? In order to become a top student in my class, I had to strive for academic excellence. I had to strive for an A even on days that I did not feel like it. I also joined clubs and gained leadership roles which enhanced my responsibility. In what ways has your high school prepared you for the future? High

school has prepared me for the future by providing me with general academic knowledge. The teachers here have been great in providing me with knowledge to help me in my future. Many classes, especially HOSA classes, have helped me gain specialized knowledge needed for my future as a healthcare professional. Do you have any words of advice for your fellow graduates? My words of advice to my fellow graduates comes from the bible verses Proverbs 3:5-6, which state "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths." We have a limited understanding. We cannot see the big picture, but God can; trust in Him.

Meagan Barnett HISTORIAN Introduce us to your family members. My parents are David adn Audra Strube and I have three brothers and a sister whose names are Drew, Nick, Ethan and Lauren. What are your hobbies/favorite pastimes? I wouldn't say I have a lot of free time, but when I do I really enjoy reading. I also love photography; I like going to nearby parks and taking pictures of the greenery. Do you plan to attend college? If so, where? I plan on attending Murray State in Kentucky. What scholarships or honors have you received? I received the Regents Scholarship due to my academic achievements and I received a housing scholarship because I attending the Commonwealth Honors Academy for a month during the summer before my senior year. Just recently I was informed that I have also received a National Merit Scholarship sponsored by my dad's workplace, Georgia Pacific. What are your future career plans? I plan to major in Conservation/Biology. What are your future career plans? I've always known that I wanted to work with animals as a career but, originally, I thought I would be an exotic animal veterinarian. After a few more years I realized that what I actually want to do is help animals that are in need or are endangered. What do you hope to accomplish in life? After I finish my undergrad I plan to go to graduate school and receive my masters; after that, I want to travel and work on different research projects around the world to help improve our planet before it's too late. What was your favorite thing about high school? I really enjoyed my freshman year, so I'd have to say that was my favorite part. The whole year was just so awesome! I was in the marching band, and our show was great. Because of band I developed some friendships that have lasted all throughout these four years. I just had a much better attitude during freshman year than I do now because everything was easier for me then. What teacher has had the most influence on you and why? Definitely Ms. Kim Collier. Not only does she provide great life skills, she managed to help me turn around my terrible math knowledge. I used to hate math, so I never paid attention and would just wing it on assign-

ments, but Ms. Collier wasn't going to let me do that. She pushed me, but she also gave me all the knowledge I needed to pass her classes with As. On top of all of that, she's a wonderful woman who really cares about her students' success. What will you miss the most about high school? I'll miss seeing my friends every day. I know after we graduate that I won't see most of them ever again. I have a few I will try to keep in touch with, but every adult warns us about trying to do that. I'm probably going to miss them a lot. Did you find your academic career challenging? I tried. Some people don't realize that if you want to do well, you have to put in more than just the minimum. Now, that doesn't sound like an extra step, but it really is. Putting in 100

percent all the time is pretty difficult, and I've found myself slacking In what ways has your high school prepared you for the future? I can say that the people around me have taught me what not to do. I've seen some pretty stupid mistakes that I'll be sure not to repeat. As for school itself, I'd say I'm at least prepared for college because of my English teachers, specifically Dr. Smith. He's a real stickler, but now I know how to write a paper in MLA format correctly. Do you have any words of advice for your fellow graduates? Good luck out tyhere. Try not to stay in Tipton County for the rest of your life because one day you'll wake up and regret that. Go travel and see some of the vast world we live in; get out of your comfortable zone. Your children will thank you later. DISCOVER: CLASS OF 2019 11

Where do Covingtons seniors go from here? BY SARAH BROWN

Covington High School set records this year, both with band and sports. Corbin Smith has been in the band since fifth grade. He followed his mother, Cindy Ballard Smith and his grandmother, who passed away not long ago into the marching band. He said his dad can play the radio and that’s about it. He’s headed to the University of Memphis, where he plans to major in music education. He said he wants to be an educator to share both his passion for music and will love seeing a new fire awaken in his future students. He wants to help students better themselves, through music. Corbin is well traveled. He’s been all over the United States and it’s taught him to appreciate many

different cultures. He said, “I always want to push myself the hardest to be the best, at whatever I’m attempting.” Audrey Jones is also enrolling in the University of Memphis. She plans to obtain a nursing degree and minor in music. She’s been involved with the band since the eighth grade. She said it’s taught her to set goals for herself, be part of a team, and how to push herself out of her comfort zone. She’s most happy taking care of people. She’s a lifelong nurturer. She feels called into nursing to help comfort and take care of people during some of their hardest times. Her love of math and science will serve her well in her chosen field. Morgan Simpson is enrolled in the University of Tennessee,

Knoxville. She will be attending school with her step brother. She comes from a large blended family. Morgan isn’t quite sure what she plans to major in, yet. She chose Knoxville because it’s outside of her comfort zone. She wants to push herself, learn new things both about life and herself. She knows that once away from home, she will have to become very independent. She’s looking forward to finding herself in a new environment. Christopher “Chris” Bernard was born Sept. 11, 2001. He’s the youngest child by many years. His father passed away when

he was a young boy. His mother has never remarried. He’s been raised with older siblings, his mother, and his grandmother. Very shortly after graduation Chris is leaving home for Basic Army Training at Fort Jackson, S.C. After basic, he will attend A.I.T. at Fort Lee, Va. to train as a supply specialist. Lastly, he will go to Airborne school at Fort Benning, Ga. His face lit up when he talked about going Airborne. He’s most excited about that aspect of his training. He said, “I always knew I wanted to serve, but I wasn’t sure which branch. The Army recruiter came

to the school, then sat down at my house with my Mom. She was a bit hesitant, given none of my other siblings chose the military. Once the recruiter explained things to my mom, she agreed to sign the papers to let me enlist.” On why he wants to serve his country he said, “ I want to travel. I want to make my mom proud. It’s the right thing to do, for me. I want to get out of here and see what else this world has to offer.” He said his mother always taught him to be independent, handle yourself like a gentleman, and that family is always the most

important thing.

Covington valedictorian Aubrey Zurhellen plans to attend MTSU in the fall and wants to major in theater. 20 DISCOVER: CLASS OF 2019

COVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL ★ CLASS OF 2019

V VALEDICTORIAN

Zurhellen headed to MTSU Valedictorian was the only option, 17-year-old Aubrey Zurhellen saw for herself when she started high school. A friendly competition began in eighth grade between her and fellow classmates. She knew it was her goal. “If I hadn’t been valedictorian, I’d have been so mad at myself. I tried so hard.” She’s now being rewarded for hard work and determination towards her goal. She is heading to Middle Tennessee State University this fall, planning to major in theater and minor in education. She splits her time equally between her parents Steve Zurhellen and Kim Golden. She’s the youngest sibling by 10 years and is the aunt of a niece and nephews. She is a veteran of the Ruffin Theater. Since the sixth grade she has participated in 26 productions, including this summer’s "Putnam County Spelling Bee." She saw a sign for auditions and mentioned it to the local librarian, who was directing that play. The librarian encouraged her to try out. From that

production on, she has cut her teeth on all manner of the theater. She taught herself how to tap dance, just to showcase a few steps in one production. She’s choreographed several productions, including the recently closed "Beauty and the Beast." Her true love seems to be the behind the scenes work, in addition to acting. After college she plans to work in theater or teach it. Her ultimate goal is to open a theater company for impoverished kids. Her goal was inspired when she assisted in a kids production at the Ruffin. She wants kids from all backgrounds to have access to the arts. In her spare time, which isn’t much, she enjoys baking. She creates beautiful delicious confections for her loved ones. The past several years her time has been divided between school, the theater and home. Repeat. She’s looking forward to a busy summer of a trip to Disney World, being a camp counselor at Girl’s State in Nashville, and playing Marcy in "Putnam County Spelling Bee" at the Ruffin.

Munfords two sets of twins BY SARAH BROWN

Munford High School, class of 2019 has the distinction of two sets of boy girl twins graduating. Michael and Meghan Butler and Cody and Cayla Crook. Michael Butler plans to attend the University of Memphis. Before that he said, “I plan to just take a break for a while and just relax and enjoy some free time before college starts and I enter the real world.” Michael has been in the MHS band all through high school. He is majoring in Music Education and has a true passion for music and can’t wait to share his love and enthusiasm by educating others. Cayla Crook is enrolling in Dyersburg State Community College. She is going to start by

taking basic classes to get accepted into their Health Science program. She plans to become a nurse, then finish with her Masters in nursing to become a nurse practitioner. She loves helping people. Cody Crook and a fellow classmate dually attended Munford High School and VoTech this school year. They attended classes half days at each location. Both Cody and his classmate have set a school record in being the fastest two to complete the electrical course training. Cody and Cayla’s father passed away in 2013, it really shaped the twins. Their father had MEN1 disease. Cody is the first male in his family to not carry the gene mutation. Cody loves working

with his hands. He said he knew just a high school diploma wasn’t going to get him anywhere. He swapped plans from enlisting in the military at the urging of his mother. He’s always liked working with his hands and fixing things. He said, “My dad always believed I could do anything I set my mind to. Now, I’m proving to my mom, with hard work, I can accomplish my goals.” Dalton Potts, a four-year MHS band alum, has plans to attend the University of Memphis and to pursue a career in drumming. He’s undecided as of yet, but is seriously considering a career in the music business. He’s looking forward to the new chapter in his life, that graduating high school means. Erik Walters plans to attend ETSU.

and major in paleontology. He’s looking forward to seeing what college life is like and living on his own. He said, “If there’s anything that makes me, me, it’s how passionate I am about things I like. Benjamin Byrd is enrolling in TCAT He doesn’t have plans to travel much, he just wants to dig in and finish his schooling. Ben said, “I’m ready to make my way in the world and make some real money.” He plans to graduate with certifications in both HVAC and welding. He likes working with his hands, being outside, and problem solving. He knew he didn’t want to spend the next four years in a classroom. He wants the applied schooling, in order to get out in the real world. He doesn’t mind hard work and knows his chosen career path will be quite lucrative.

She always backs him up, pushes him to strive to be the best, and also made sure he stays in line. His Christian faith is very important to him. He said, “My faith has taught me to be kind. I don’t put labels on people. I try to treat everyone how I want to be treated. I come into every situation respectful of others. My faith has kept me grounded and focused.” Tanner is planning to attend Arkansas State University. He plans to major in Mechanical Engineering there. He said he’s always loved to “tinker." He loved

taking things apart when he was younger, just to see how they work. He likes to see the why and how engines work. Tanner plans to work with internal combustion engines. He said he thinks that particular aspect of engineering will suit the tinkerer side of him. He knows he will love the challenges his future career will bring him. He’s always been a problem solver. He thrives in a situation where he has to both determine the problem and fix it. He’s not sure where he plans to work after college, but he knows he’s going into a wide open job field. He said he chose engineering because he knows already how much he will enjoy it. On being valedictorian he said, “ I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity and the knowledge to use my skills to my greatest potential.”

Valedictorian Tanner Casey is planning to attend Arkansas State University in the fall and will major in mechanical engineering.

Camryn Bruce SALUTATORIAN

1. Who are your family members? My father’s name is David, my mother’s name is Stephanie, and I also have three younger siblings named Carter, Cara and Cade. 2. What are your hobbies? What do you do for fun? Until the end of the 2018-2019 season, most of my time outside of classes consisted of my participation in basketball. Now that I no longer play, I spend my time hanging out with friends and family. I also work for my church’s sports and outreach ministries. 3. Do you plan to attend college? Where? I plan on attending Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. 4. What scholarships/ honors have you received? I have been named a Trustee Scholar at Mississippi College, and this scholarship covers my total cost of attendance (tuition, room, and board). I interviewed for the scholarship earlier this year and was later chosen for this honor, along with three other students from around the country. 5. What do you plan to major/minor in? I am not completely committed to this, but as of right now, I would like to major in Communications with a concentration on sports media and marketing. 6. Why did you choose that major/ minor? I enjoy speaking to others and I also enjoy watching many different sports, so I feel like I could use this degree to pursue something that I am not only capable of succeeding in, but something that is exciting to me. 7. What are your future career plans? While I may someday change my mind, I currently want to pursue a career in working with college athletic departments or programs. I am unsure of what I specifically want do in this field, but I know that I could excel in that environment. 8. What was your favorite thing about high school? I loved getting to participate in homecoming and other school events that were very fun. I made so many memories with my friends during the weeks of dressing up, playing games, and cheering in pep rallies. 9. What teacher has had the most influence on you and why? Though my mother was never my teacher, since she was recently hired as a freshman English teacher, she is still the most influential person in my life from MHS. She has been encouraging, kind, and present for all the important moments during my high school years. 10. What do you think you’ll miss most about high school? I know that I will miss 36 DISCOVER: CLASS OF 2019

playing basketball more than any other aspect of high school. I had the amazing opportunity to play for a championship-winning program under the leadership of coaches that cared a lot about me, and it makes me sad when I think about how I’ll never get to play in a high school game again. 11. What extra steps did you take to become a top student in your class? I had to sacrifice a great deal of time that I would otherwise spend resting or with friends in order to balance both my academic and athletic commitments. Time management was something I had to focus on in order to keep my grades up, and I often had to spend extra hours studying in order to excel in all classes. 12. Did you find your academic career challenging? Because my school offered advanced placement and dual enrollment courses, I was

able to receive a challenging education that also prepared me for college. 13. In what ways has high school prepared you for the future? Through classes, athletics, and my associations with adults in the building, I was prepared to understand the curriculum of college level courses while also understanding how to properly communicate with those above me. 14. Do you have any words for advice for your fellow graduates? I suggest enjoying every last moment of this time as a high schooler, because I am sure we will all miss these days eventually. Don’t wish it away, but also look to the future with enthusiasm because we have exciting things in store.

in those classes. I spent a lot of extra time and effort devoting myself to my classwork and school extracurricular activities. 12. Did you find your academic career challenging? skills. On a daily basis, I interact with other individuals, I use problemsolving techniques, I challenge my mindset, and so much more. I will be able to take these experiences in my future and use them in any situation. 14. Do you have any words for advice for your fellow graduates? This small class of tight-knit friends, many who have been together at TRA since Pre-K or Kindergarten, selfishly committed themselves to Christian service and leadership. In the summer prior to their senior year, the class spent a week together at the school's adopted village of Los Fundos in the Dominican Republic. In addition to building a house for a local family, cleaning and painting the school building, and playing with the children, their most cherished and impactful act was sharing their love of the Lord. In the fall semester of their senior year the students were divided into small groups and asked to research a need in their community and work as a team to help fulfill that need. The groups chose the following orga-

nizations/projects:

The Boys & Girls Club of the Hatchie River Region Rosemark Civic Club / HARE Community Baptist Church First United Methodist Church/Bread of Life Munford Parks & Rec (Soccer Team) Confidential Care Tipton County Animal Shelter Munford Parks & Rec (Restoration Project) Self Defense Training Baccalaureate and graduation were held at First Baptist Church in Millington on Saturday, May 18.
