Welcome to the third and final edition of our Coventry UK City of Culture Programme.

I am thrilled to launch our 2022 programme. It’s a brilliant and diverse range of shows, festivals, exhibitions, films, podcasts, broadcasts, workshops and so much more. I am especially proud that so much of the programme has been created with, or spotlights, amazing citizens and renowned artists from Coventry, continuing to shine a light on local talent and creativity as well as highlighting local stories that resonate globally.

In the second half of our year as City of Culture, we will build upon the wealth of activity we delivered in 2021 with events shaped, for, with and by the people of Coventry. We will continue to welcome you to familiar, and some not so familiar, spaces and places as we animate streets, neighbourhoods, and our beautiful green and blue spaces.

We are also delighted to spotlight some of the incredible existing and new venues popping up across the city. April 2022 will see the return of our highly successful Assembly Festival Garden, and in May we launch The Reel Store, the UK’s first permanent digital immersive gallery.

We continue to be forward focused, reimagining our collective future, always rooted in our histories, as we debate tough issues, put our wonderfully inspiring communities at the forefront, and celebrate the many identities of this incredible city, in a playful and joyous programme.

As you flick through I hope you will find plenty to pique your interest, whether it is a show that excites you, an artist that delights you or something new to try in your local area or in a part of the city new to you.

There is so much on its way, and something for everyone. Be part of creating great art, great change, and great memories in Coventry, the city that moves.

Coventry’s programme is unlike any UK City of Culture that’s come before. It’s been created with, and by, the people of the city and explores what’s important to them.

Sometimes joyous, sometimes playful, sometimes poignant, always Coventry.

Celebrating the people of the city and their stories. A Collaborative City programme, co-created with communities who are declaring, and sharing, their love for Coventry as they shine a light on local stories.

Highlighting the experiences of those that are too often seldom heard. Placing the stories of real people, and the issues that affect them, at its heart. A Caring City programme in partnership with Positive Youth Foundation, Grapevine, Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre and Central England Law Centre.

WHAT’S NEXT? UK City of Culture 2021 is only the beginning of the story. Before you delve into our final few months, we’re excited to share two of our major projects that will carry on after our year has ended in May 2022, Assembly Festival Garden and The Reel Store.

WELCOME BACK TO ASSEMBLY FESTIVAL GARDEN The hugely popular Assembly Festival Garden will return to Coventry from 14 April with a fresh new programme of family favourites, stunning spectaculars and familiar faces. Tickets for the first shows announced are on sale now.

Located opposite the Council House and a short walk from both Broadgate and Coventry Cathedral, the Festival Garden will play host to the remarkable, double-decker, Queen of Flanders spiegeltent, the largest of its kind in the world, the Treehouse bar, and the bijou Piccolo spiegeltent.

ART DIGITAL EXHIBITION FAMILY FRIENDLY

MACHINE MEMOIRS: SPACE REFIK ANADOL Opening The Reel Store will be the UK premiere of Refik Anadol’s Machine Memoirs: Space.

The product of a long-term collaboration with NASA, the exhibition uses artificial intelligence to reimagine two million publicly available images taken by satellite and telescopes, transporting visitors from the centre of Coventry to the deepest regions of outer space.

Machine Memoirs: Space will be a 360 degree experience, suitable for the whole family, with a futuristic, awe-inspiring display that encaptures the beauty and spectacle of space in waves of colour and light.

Whether you have an interest in space, are looking to have fun with the family, or want to grab the most instagrammable pictures in Coventry, this is an exhibition not-to-be-missed.

Much loved by neighbourhoods across the city last year, Window Wanderland returns to once again light up their front windows and gardens and become beautiful night-time walking trails.

Window Wanderland can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities, so everyone on your street can get involved.

Window Wanderland started in Bristol in 2015 and now takes place all over the world. Residents make a display for their window or garden forming a walking trail for a winter’s evening.

Schools can get involved too. Check out our school-specific pack for dozens of ideas on how to create your designs, as well as the registration info your school needs for Window Wanderland 2022.

ART COMMUNITY FAMILY FRIENDLY

ARTIST ON MY STREET: PHASE 3 (SUMMER 2022) Artists commissioned by Coventry Artspace are bringing moments of light to their neighbourhoods during the pandemic by sharing their work in windows, balconies and on the streets.

Artists will be featured on the Artspace website and audio recordings about the artwork will be available on the Echoes audio app so that visitors can find out more about them and their practice. The work will also be professionally photographed and shared through Coventry Artspace and Coventry City of Culture Trust social media channels.

THE SHOW WINDOWS Artists, designers, architects and makers are transforming Coventry City Centre by turning shop windows into portals to fantasy worlds. The Show Windows aims to inspire hope, adventure and imagination. It invites us to rediscover Coventry, as an ever-evolving home to diverse and creative communities and businesses, and its people.

The Show Windows: Reflections The commissions spotlight and celebrate Coventry’s post-war heritage by bringing together creatives, communities and collections with installations in the City Centre.

Produced in partnership with Historic England and Coventry Business Improvement District assistant curators Indira Lakshmi and Rahma Mohamed. Reflections features work from Government Art Collection, British Museum and Crafts Council.

RIBA Schools Competition Students across Coventry and Warwickshire were invited to take part in the RIBA’s School The Show Windows Competition, funded by Ibstock.

Winners include: The Phoenix of Light by Franco Poretta, age 9, from Holy Family School in collaboration with ADP Architects. Franco’s design was selected as the winning entry for its striking visuals and clever play upon the theme of Light.

Happiness by Mili Karia, age 6, from Earlsdon Primary School. Mili’s design was judged to be the winning entry from among several hundred on the theme of Hope.

The Butterfly of Hope by Stella Whelan, age 13, from Coundon Court. Stella’s design impressed judges on the theme of Coventry: A City of Hope.

Amazing Women In March, the Amazing Women showcase presents new commissions by artists including Karen McLean, Kemi Onabule and Katrina Russell-Adams.

The Show Windows can be seen in windows across Coventry City Centre.

RADFORD BUBBLES A photographic exhibition at Jubilee Crescent Community Centre of ‘support bubbles’, families and other groups of residents that supported each other during the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020-21.

Ten local photographers stepped up to the challenge of taking portraits in a studio designed to look like a bubble.

The exhibition is a snapshop of life during the pandemic.

COMMUNITY CONNECTORS A group of 10 new Community Connectors are co-creating cultural projects within their communities, developing and collaborating on projects which create meaningful participation opportunities for community members.

The programme, delivered by Coventry City of Culture Trust and 64million Artists, supports community leaders to engage with their local area by improving and using community spaces, putting on a community event, or creating a piece of art.

THROUGH THE LENS OF MASTERJI Maganbhai Patel (1924 – 2018), more widely-known as Masterji, came to national attention in 2016 when, at the age of 94, he received his first solo exhibition as part of Coventry’s bid to become UK City of Culture, supported by Photo Miners and his daughter Tarla Patel.

For decades prior to this, Masterji was a wellknown figure within Coventry as the first Indian photographer in the city.

This exhibition will present the most comprehensive survey of Masterji’s work to date, bringing together portraits taken across his five-decades-long career, including a 28

number of works never exhibited before.

The portraits will be accompanied by oral history interviews with members of the pioneering generation of South Asian people in Coventry, exploring the wider context of migration to the city and highlighting the challenges faced by many migrants coming to the UK. PIONEERING COVENTRY: THE POST-WAR PHOTOGRAPHY OF RICHARD SADLER Three exhibitions will focus on the life and work of Richard Sadler, Coventry’s pre-eminent post-war photographer, including prints, projections, talks and guided visits.

Pioneering People: Sadler and the City Tue 8 Feb – Fri 11 Mar A look at the people of post-war Coventry through the lens of Richard Sadler, as they rebuilt the Phoenix City after the war.

Pioneering Industry: Sadler and Courtaulds Tue 15 Mar – Fri 22 Apr A look at Courtaulds, the exemplar factory of Coventry’s industrial spirit, inventor of man-made fibres and carbon fibre. This exhibition will also focus on important women who worked at the factory, including English chemist and industrial manager Vera Furness.

Pioneering Arts: Sadler and the Cathedral Sun 24 Apr - Tue 31 May A look at the inspirational design and art of the Cathedral, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Cathedral’s consecration. This exhibition will be community-curated with the Friends of Coventry Cathedral.

WHERE THERE IS LIGHT Where There Is Light is an immersive sound and light installation sharing the voices and stories of sanctuary seeking communities from across the country. It asks questions about where we find light in our lives, in ourselves, in others and in the world around us.

The soundscape draws on the voices and stories collected from a series of interviews that took place online during 2020’s lockdowns with sanctuary-seeking communities from Coventry, Halton, Hull and Leicester.

In the aftermath of the Coronavirus pandemic, we seek to rebuild, reconnect, and transform

how communities, artists and venues operate, to ensure we stay connected in a world that can at times feel physically distanced, isolating or even lonely.

BROKEN ANGEL: BARBARA WALKER Transforming a fractured past into a shared future, Broken Angel is a series of new site-specific installations to temporarily replace the Angel of the Eternal Gospel at Coventry Cathedral.

The original window, part of John Hutton’s great glass West Screen, was destroyed in an act of vandalism in 2020 and has been left as a blank pane of glass since. Broken Angel is Coventry Cathedral’s creative response to filling the space. This began with a stunning piece by Anne Petters that saw a broken piece of window glass magnified and projected where the original Angel used to be, appearing as an abstract reflection of an angel’s wing.

Walker is inspired by the way historic art uses objects, belongings and attributes to describe figures in faith stories and how this shapes our understanding of their identities. The issues of belonging, power, visibility, and representation are central to Walker’s practice. She often references public archives to create works that effectively transfer visibility back to the subject, offering an alternative and balanced interpretation of a nation’s history.

Four Coventry women, four different stories, and a common need for connection.

HER DAY is a new opera that tells the story of ordinary women engaged in everyday acts of peaceful protest. Equally as funny as it is moving, the opera emerged from a series of workshops with local women’s groups and is a testament to the power and resilience of Coventry.

The female-led opera by Coventry-based women Sayan Kent and Vanessa Oakes is directed by Lucy Bradley (Royal Opera House, OperaUpClose and Glyndebourne) with Musical Direction by Berrak Dyer (Opera Holland Park & Welsh National Opera) and includes a community chorus of local female singers led by Mariana Rosas (Colla Voce Chamber Choir).

RIVERS OF THE WORLD Rivers of the World creates collaborative artworks inspired by river themes and environmental studies, linking primary and secondary schools in the UK with partner schools in developing countries around the world.

Primary and secondary SEN (Special Educational Needs) students in Coventry have been engaged in a two-year international art and education project by Thames Festival Trust. In 2021 Coventry schools were partnered with classrooms in Tanzania working with artist and art teacher, Ernest Mtaya. They created a collection of artworks about the River Sherbourne in Coventry and the River Ruvu in Tanzania.

The artworks were created both at home and in school, showing the strength of spirit and imagination of the artists and young people in the face of a global pandemic.

These exciting works will be exhibited through physical and digital displays at different sites and venues across Coventry as an opportunity to see how creative our future generation is outside the classroom.

Shona Watt has been Rivers of the World’s lead artist since its inception, and is known for creating spectacular flag installations that have been seen worldwide. Ernest Mtaya has organised many art competitions and exhibitions for young people, he also teaches art on TV and is registered by the Arts Council in Tanzania.

The Digital Tablecloth will recreate the first recorded act of twinning, when residents of Coventry sent a tablecloth with 830 names stitched into it as an act of solidarity to the people of Volgograd in 1944.

A mystical story which culminates in a mighty battle between the Tuatha D Danann – (the tribe of the gods) and the Milesians to determine the fate of the land.

An ancient tale from the Book of Invasion of goddesses and high kings, of adventure and endeavour that takes place on both land and ocean. One that spans 400 years taking the audience from Egypt to Ireland with themes that resonate today: migration, cultural co-existence, and acceptance.

The festival will also showcase local and regional talent, including Armonico Consort and Capsule, throw a spotlight onto female talent and show off newly opened music venues in the city.

20 pieces of music will be performed across the city with each composition no longer than 15 minutes in duration to create a pop-up, interactive way for audiences to discover new music.

Since its launch as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, music and the arts have never been more important with so many universal challenges facing individuals, communities and the world. The festival in Coventry will feature 10 new pieces and 10 existing pieces from the last 10 years of New Music Biennial. The new works will explore the fantastical, imaginative and transformational shift music can affect in confronting today’s universal threats and challenges whilst bringing joy and excitement.

MOTHERLAND Stumble upon a photography exhibition deep in the woods. Launching on Earth Day (22 April) in Stivichall Common Woodland, discover natural spaces that you might not know about in your city. This is a space to feel at home, grounded and relaxed.

Ayesha also looks at the potential harmony that could be found between black and white, physical and metaphysical, modern and traditional in her conceptual work. Go out from the inner city and enjoy photography in green spaces.

Motherland explores the human need to belong through the eyes of mixed heritage local artist, Ayesha Jones. In her work she documents time spent in West Africa with her mother and in Mid-Wales with her son. She explores how natural spaces can be a constant and reliable source of support on the turbulent journey to find belonging when you are neither one nor the other.

HUNGRY NATION - PART 2 It is claimed that there are more food banks than McDonalds in the UK. Working with Foleshill Community Centre, Hungry Nation Part 1 presented themes around how food poverty and access to food affects real lives of the people in Coventry.

For this second stage, a creative team and a cast of professional actors and community participants are working together using storytelling, games, research and creative activity to develop a piece of theatre that reflects the everyday lives of those experiencing food poverty.

Join us to reflect on these journeys and to debate what Coventry’s ‘Right to Food’ pledge really means.

Lee Child – released Wed 9 Feb The prolific author of the Jack Reacher detective novels talks of two Birmingham libraries which gave him his love of books. He describes the smell of the dusty shelves and the voracious appetite he developed for reading, so much so his parents obtained extra library cards in the name of visiting relatives.

“Even our dog had a library card. Without those two libraries as a little kid, I would have been a completely different person. So when you ask ‘what did the Midlands mean to me?’ I mean, everything. That’s who I am.”

Pauline Black – released Wed 16 Feb A pioneer of Two Tone, lead singer of groundbreaking ska band The Selecter tells the podcast she first came to the Midlands as a student. “I got off the train in Coventry and I felt immediately at home.” She studied and worked in Coventry hospitals and kickstarted her musical career playing folk gigs in Coventry pubs. “Nobody asked me to leave.”

Midlands Memory: Hauling heavy musical equipment up the steep stairs for The Selecter’s first recording session at Horizon Recording Studios in Coventry. “I’d never been near a recording studio before. Ken Loach – released Wed 23 Feb Recorded at an event in Coventry Cathedral, the awardwinning film director becomes emotional as he recalls hearing the news from a neighbour that the building had been bombed during the Second World War. “A neighbour came in and said they destroyed the cathedral. I remember the smell of the night air and the horror that people had of course, we knew so many, killed.”

Nitin Ganatra – released Wed 2 Mar The Eastenders actor was a shy and overweight immigrant boy with a stammer, and subjected to horrific bullying and racial abuse while growing up in Coventry. Two teachers persuaded him to audition for a school play, helping him overcome his low confidence and gain a place at Bristol University to study drama.

“I opened my mouth, everything started to flow, no stammer, no insecurity, nothing. I just began to speak in character and I sang a solo and I got a standing ovation.”

Debbie Isitt – released Wed 9 Mar Film director Debbie Isitt played truant after making her mind up at an early age that she wanted to be involved in the arts. A slot on a children’s Saturday morning TV show sealed it. “I went on Tiswas as part of my dancing school.

I just thought, what do I need school for? I’m on my way, I’m on the telly.” Midlands Hero: “My Dad – a real Peaky Blinder.”

Tom Clarke – released Wed 16 Mar The frontman of The Enemy was born in the heart of the West Midlands. “I grew up in Castle Bromwich, which is Solihull or Birmingham, depending on who you’re trying to impress.” He talks of his love of manufacturing, especially cars, and of family, plus his determination to offer a leg up to other young Midlands artists.

SKINT Skint is a new series of monologues for television created by artists with lived experience of poverty and hardship. Eight characters will demonstrate imagination, grit, humour and courage when faced with some of the bleakest of circumstances.

The common thread throughout these monologues is the tiny crackle of light in the darkness, the strength we find in community and the power of hope. The creative directors are Lisa McGee (writer and creator of Derry Girls) and Peter Mullan (Trainspotting, My Name Is Joe).

GHOSTS IN THE RUINS Ghosts in the Ruins was a sell-out live immersive perfomance that took place in January 2022, combining choral music, sound, poetry and projections, created

SKY UNLOCKED Unlocked is a 10-part series for Sky Arts which sees some of Coventry’s brightest creative talents commissioned to create a new series of short films that will explore ideas around freedom.

In a unique collaboration, and in recognition of Coventry’s year as the UK’s City of Culture, Sky Arts has partnered with Arts Council England, Coventry City of Culture Trust, The Space and the city’s emerging artist platform, Shoot Festival, to discover and unlock the potential of ten diverse Coventry artists, providing them with an opportunity to tell distinctive stories and create short

The artists were selected from an open-call and applicants were invited to submit their ideas for short films responding to the question ‘what does it mean to be free?’. The concept of ‘freedom’ being one of the City of Culture’s main themes. As part of the project, each of the ten artists will receive a bespoke programme of mentoring and support from industry professionals, helping them to create new digital broadcast content.

HAND/EARTH/ GESTURE/ RETURN: CHAPTER THREE The Hairy Barge is a moving sculpture that will stop along the Grand Union, Oxford and Coventry canals to meet with locals and share their stories. Setting off from Hatton Locks it will stop at Leamington Spa and Braunston on route. The sculpture will arrive at the Coventry Canal Basin, forming the back-drop for a talk on heritage grains and drop-in making sessions on traditional straw crafts (open to all ages, no experience necessary). MAX RICHTER: VOICES AND INFRA Performed by the Max Richter ensemble.

Max Richter gives the only British performance this year of his acclaimed new work Voices and his classic piece Infra.

Voices is a major work created by Max Richter and his artistic partner, Yulia Mahr, featuring text adapted from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At the heart of Voices is a profound sense of global community, born out of Richter’s view of music as activism and a desire to unite audiences. Described as ‘a place to think’ the piece was a response to our tempestuous political climate and the enduring need for compassion.

Infra is Max Richter’s musical response to the

London 07/07 terror attacks, inspired by T.S Eliot’s poem The Waste Land.

Max Richter is best known for his genre- defining solo albums including The Blue Notebooks, Memoryhouse and Infra.

Other landmark works include Sleep, an eight-hour album described by the composer as “a personal lullaby for a frenetic world - a manifesto for a slower pace of existence”.

It’s 1979. Coventry’s newest boxing star returns to the National Stadium in Dublin to defend his Irish light-heavyweight title but ends up facing more than one fearsome challenger to his crown. Prejudice, corrupt officials and warring factions in Ireland cause a chaotic event that pushes family unity to the brink.

Who am I?” Fighting Irish, a new Belgrade Theatre production by Coventry writer, Jamie McGough, is the extraordinary, true story

charting the rising and falling fortunes of the McGough brothers, and maps the journey of the Irish diaspora through one family’s story.

Co-directed by Belgrade Artistic Directors, Corey Campbell and Hamish Glen, Fighting Irish, marks a triumphant finale to the Theatre’s UK City of Culture 2021 programme.

PLEASE NOTE: Fighting Irish is being staged in-the-round with seating on all four sides of the stage, like the seating around a boxing ring.

CAMP, DO WE GO AROUND THE HOUSES, OR DO HOUSES GO AROUND US? Lucy Tomlins investigates how artists can use materials to highlight concerns around sustainability in contemporary society.

In collaboration with a team of practitioners, she has made a series of shelters from mycelium, Portland stone and cob to create a camp. This temporary residence is made up of huts, tents and other structural forms typically used by soldiers, refugees or travellers.

FRIDAYS COVENTRY – BIG MOVIE PROJECT Over 70 stories have been submitted from the public and students from local schools including Barrs Hill, Cardinal Wiseman, and Caludon Castle.

During February, three stories will be chosen and the young people behind each one will work with experienced writers to help develop their script into short films in just one week.

The production of the films themselves will also be led by young people. Join Fridays for the premiere in May to see the result.

ART FOR THE PEOPLE Art for the People explores how arts, culture and creativity can shape a better future for Coventry.

Believing that arts and culture need to be owned by, and enrich the lives of, all the people of this city – and that this should be written into our city’s arts policy, Coventry artists Talking Birds developed Art for the People. Fifty residents were selected from across Coventry to represent the city in the UK’s first Citizens’ Assembly on Arts and Culture. They spent a number of weeks hearing evidence, discussing the issues, and producing recommendations for presentation to Coventry City Council as part of the work on the city’s Cultural Strategy. @COVENTRY2021

In Spring 2022, Talking Birds and Assembly members will produce a number of pilot projects in neighbourhoods across Coventry to test out, start off, or in some way advance the recommendations drawn up and voted on by the Citizens’ Assembly.
