I am delighted to share our Winter programme with you.

We are now more than halfway through our year, and with our partners, have already brought a huge amount of joy, surprise, fun and a dose of mischief to so many locations all over the city in our first six months.

As we head towards Christmas and with 2022 on the horizon, our programme will continue to be rooted in the stories of the city, but with a contemporary twist. The programme is created by, and told with, many local citizens and artists.

This season includes orchestral music, theatre, dance, film, fashion, photography, crafts, music and light.

We find strength in adversity with the Broken Angel commission with Coventry Cathedral; and bring joy to all for the holidays with Coventry Glides.

The Turner Prize and Coventry Biennial will continue to engage audiences in discussions that touch on gender politics, cultural divides and climate crisis amongst others. And The Show Windows programme will continue to expand in shop windows across the City Centre.

I hope you will revel in many extraordinary events, Nitin Sawhney Ghosts in the Ruins is a creative reimagining of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, and Window Wonderland will invite the people of Coventry to turn their streets into a huge open-air gallery.

There is truly something for everyone this season with a wealth of family friendly events, indoor and outdoor activities and an array of ways to engage. As the nights draw in and the holiday season is upon us, come out and enjoy your Coventry, the city that moves.

ART FAMILY FRIENDLY

Every other year the Turner Prize is staged outside of London and this year it’s Coventry’s turn. Featuring visual and sound installations, a pub without permission and an artist’s studio – the exhibition is entirely by artist collectives working across the UK to inspire social change through art.

The 2021 jury – Aaron Cezar, Director, Delfina Foundation; Kim McAleese, Programme Director, Grand Union; Russell Tovey, Actor; Zoé Whitley, Director, Chisenhale Gallery; and Alex Farquharson, Director, Tate Britain (Chair) – will choose the winner to be announced on Wednesday 1 December 2021.

The 2021 Turner Prize exhibition continues to spark conversation and debate, come along to the free exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and make your own mind up.

COVENTRY BIENNIAL Look back at what has made Coventry and the surrounding area unique, and reflect on an increasingly complex world. The third Coventry Biennial is taking place in Coventry and Warwickshire in a wide range of artistic, heritage, business and community locations.

Titled Hyper-Possible, referencing the radical nature of Coventry’s history and exploring the legacies of artists that mark the city as an outstanding exemplar of innovative, experimental and radical artistic practice.

Rob Hamp - Art Can Be Rubbish Too, until Sun 23 Jan, The Old Grammar School, Hales Street, Coventry CV1 1HP, Free As part of the group exhibition Proof and our Green Futures programme, we have commissioned Rob Hamp to work with a wide range of community groups to collect waste from some of the UK’s most littered beaches.

He has brought this waste back to Coventry and recycled the materials into a new architectural work titled Art Can Be Rubbish Too.

NITIN SAWHNEY GHOSTS IN THE RUINS To mark the 60th anniversary of Coventry Cathedral, we have commissioned Nitin Sawhney CBE, to create a new site-specific performance in response to Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece War Requiem which premiered as part of the 1962 Coventry Festival, and is internationally regarded as one of the iconic highlights of British twentieth century choral music.

Sixty years on, Ghosts in the Ruins will use the human voice at the centre of the work, with intimate and reflective choral moments being performed against a backdrop of specially commissioned images projected onto the interior walls of the Cathedral. Ghosts in the Ruins reflects Coventry as a city of sanctuary, and its stand against war and violence, with a strong history of helping refugees,

asylum-seekers and migrants. The work will explore themes of acceptance, hope, resilience, regeneration and reconciliation in relation to contemporary conflicts.

This first part of the performance, seated inside the modern Cathedral, will take you on a journey from past to present. The audience will then be invited to move into the Cathedral Ruins, where the professional musicians are joined by community singers from in and

around Coventry, to experience a dramatic conclusion.

On Thursday 27 January, Nitin Sawhney CBE will join us after the performance for a special Q&A session.

BROKEN ANGEL Transforming a fractured past into a shared future, Broken Angel is a series of new site-specific installations to temporarily replace the Angel of the Eternal Gospel at Coventry Cathedral.

The original window, part of John Hutton’s great glass West Screen, was destroyed in an act of vandalism in 2020 and has been left as a blank pane of glass since. Broken Angel is Coventry Cathedral’s creative response to filling the space.

Broken Angel features three different artists between November 2021 and the end of August 2022, starting with Anne Petters. Her stunning installation of a broken piece of window glass will be magnified and projected onto the screen where the original Angel used to be, appearing as an abstract reflection of an Angel’s wing.

Originally from Dresden, one of Coventry’s twin cities, Anne’s installation responds to the destruction of the glass and Coventry Cathedral’s response of hope and reconciliation.

SYMPHONY OF US An epic and personal spectacle made by six people of Cov, a local creative team and Orchestra of the Swan.

Six people of Coventry share with you the stories of who they are, supported by an original live composition played by the region’s most established chamber orchestra.

These proud Coventrians, either born in the city or who have made it their home, are teachers, are parents, are quietly changing the world.

They are midwives, they are football fans, they are spiritualist ministers. They have experienced loss, they have experienced joy. They are a little part of ‘us’, a little segment of the people who contribute to this world but rarely get a live orchestra to sing their praises.

Raised in Coventry, Lismore is an artist, designer, perfumer, stylist and human rights warrior. A truly spectacular and immersive experience, this UK premiere celebrates the intersection of art, architecture, world cultures, beauty and fashion.

The exhibition includes Lismore’s sculptural ensembles, each fashioned from his personal collection of over 7,000 curiosities and displayed alongside his personal archive of photography, film and found objects. Green Futures explores Coventry and Warwickshire’s wildlife, natural heritage, and landscape. The city is a forest and we are working with artists and communities to unearth the hidden nature and wildlife all around us. From local parks to Coventry Canal, our Green Futures programme explores how we can use arts and culture to help make positive change to our city and our planet.

With COP26 having taken place in Glasgow in 2021 and with almost every country on earth gathering to discuss global climate action, we’re exploring how arts, culture and heritage can act as a vehicle for climate action, activism and change. Together we will support a cleaner, greener, carbon neutral future for our city, our planet and us all, as part of the Green Futures programme.

We have teamed up with many partners and organisations across Coventry and Warwickshire to put on a programme of public events, exhibitions, films and talks with Green Futures at their centre.

BECOMING FUNGI, BECOMING FOREST Performing the mycelial city Imagine the city as a place of invisible connections, as part of the biosphere interlinking all living beings. Can you see that the city is also a forest?

You are invited to take a guided tour of performance, poetry, moving image, mycelial and wild yeast experiences, choreography and singing, at a series of secret locations across Coventry’s city centre.

Inspired by Merlin Sheldrake’s book Entangled Life, we will imagine the city as a place of invisible connections and interacting ecosystems, including humans, fungi, trees, microbes and other life.

At a critical time, with the world focused on COP26 negotiations to reduce global warming, we ask how can Coventry be the best city for our planet?

LOVE COVENTRY Our Love Coventry programme celebrates the people of the city, as we work in partnership with communities to declare, and share, their love for Coventry.

From a summer full of pop-up parties in parks and green spaces around the city; to a month-long showcase of amateur theatre; and a celebration of Caribbean culture bursting with colour and music, Love Coventry continues to shine a light on local stories.

Whether it has been your home all your life, you’ve only lived here a short time, or if you’re simply visiting, this programme is for you, as we bring UK City of Culture to your doorstep throughout the year.

As part of the Love Coventry programme, a group of Community Connectors have been working with ‘64 Million Artists’ to develop ideas from them and their communities.

THE FLYING BAZAZI BROTHERS Part Cirque du Soleil, part Tom Jones - with a little Swayze thrown in for good measure, the Bazazi Brothers heady mix of celebrity and circus family history steeped in tradition is a real one off. The riotous double act, dance, juggle and fall over each other for your viewing pleasure, and features internationally renowned superstars Edward and Kaveh Bazazi.

Workshop After the show there will be a 30 minute juggling workshop. Working on throwing, catching and basic hand eye co-ordination skills for younger kids and learning to juggle three balls for anyone 8+.

Coventry and Warwickshire will be lit up again this winter with Window Wanderland and Artist on my Street.

From February - March 2021, over 2,000 houses across Coventry became art galleries as residents cut, stapled and glued, bringing colour and joy to our streets. Whether you’re looking to create your own stunning display, or take to the streets and explore the talent in your neighborhood, Window Wanderland brings City of Culture to your doorstep.

Also bringing light to streets near you, in Winter 2021 eight artists will be sharing work commissioned as part of Artist on my Street - a project inspired by artists who found ways to bring moments of light to their neighbourhoods during the pandemic by sharing their work in windows, balconies and on the streets.

REFORM THE NORM Reform the Norm is a Caring City programme in partnership with four host organisations: Grapevine, Central England Law Centre, Positive Youth Foundation and Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre. This arts for social change programme places the stories of real people and the issues affecting them at its heart.

The programme celebrates and centralises their creativity, whilst discovering together ways of tackling pertinent social issues through targeted and sometimes playful cultural interventions.

Theatre company Strike A Light have been gathering stories of food poverty together with ten participants who have lived experience of being hungry or accessing emergency food banks. They invite you to experience these personal stories in a relaxed performance over lunch or dinner, and ask you to join the discussion in how we move forward together in a hungry world.

All ticket sales will go directly to Feeding Coventry, a small charity with big ambition: to create a food resilient city in Coventry where nobody goes hungry.

Hungry Nation will culminate in April 2022 with a larger public performance that is co-curated with the participants.

ANOTHER CHRISTMAS Another Christmas is a celebration of otherness, the others and the other in everyone, capturing the stories and beauty of real people in everyday life. It’s a rebellion against, and refreshing relief from, the relentless recycled conventional Christmas - at least for one night. Sit down and watch an alternative Christmas film, where we lift the tinsel curtain, cut through the predictable ‘fluffy’ sound of Christmas, and give voice to other experiences and the experiences of all.

We’ll be told stories by some of Coventry’s residents who have different perspectives and experiences that are often unheard, unseen and airbrushed out of the Christmas picture.

They’ll give unique reinterpretations of popular songs including Last Christmas, Fairytale of New York, and I’ll Take Care Of You against a backdrop of live performance and documentary-style visual montages. Plus newly commissioned work from Douglas Dare, Camille O’Sullivan and Eska with Duke Garwood.

WHERE THERE IS LIGHT Where There Is Light is an immersive sound and light installation sharing the voices and stories of sanctuary-seeking communities from across the country. It asks questions about where we find light in our lives, in ourselves, in others and in the world around us.

The soundscape draws on voices and stories collected from a series of interviews that took place online during 2020’s lockdowns between sanctuary seeking communities from Coventry, Halton, Hull and Leicester.

In the aftermath of the Coronavirus pandemic, we seek to rebuild, reconnect, and transform how communities, artists and venues operate, to ensure we stay connected in a world that can at times feel physically distanced, isolating or even lonely.

Where There Is Light will be a beautiful moment, a break in people’s day to day lives, to look outside of themselves and experience the world through someone else’s eyes and explore where there is light in their lives.

The soundscape was made collaboratively and remotely across borders, led by the arts collective Squidsoup and ArtReach. Together with artist Sameena Khan, Audio Producer Dimple Patel, Lee Chaos for The Music Works and Composer Julian Gregory Bayliss.

This artwork provides a truly poignant sensory experience exploring themes of light.

FOLKLORICA An Augmented Reality artwork by Edie Jo Murray Come and play with a free new interactive digital artwork at Warwick Arts Centre. Using your mobile phone, enter an augmented reality world in which a range of fantastical animated creatures roam freely amongst the grounds of the University of Warwick.

In this newly-commissioned work, Coventry digital artist and University of Warwick graduate Edie Jo Murray explores the historical symbolism of Coventry, Warwickshire and the University itself, often portrayed in animal form. From the phoenix to the elephant with a castle on its back to the contemporary Rolf the cat, Murray explores the urban mythologies that lie deep within our identity.

The UK premiere of a startlingly innovative production by Dead Centre, the Dublin-based theatre company behind the hit show Hamnet, which visited Warwick Arts Centre in 2018.

Told without live performers on stage, we hear the characters’ voices through headphones and watch their story unfold as objects miraculously move and dance around the stage.

Beckett’s Room tells the story of the apartment in Paris where Samuel Beckett lived with his partner Suzanne during the Second World War and considers their place within the French Resistance. But it also speaks to us about the millions of other lives across Europe which are changed by conflict.

The absence of bodies focuses us more intently on their stories, on the world changing around us, changed by us. This is a biography of a room, and an invitation to bear witness to a world as it disappears.

RANA BEGUM: DAPPLED LIGHT Rana Begum explores the perception of light and colour through vibrant paintings, sculptures, and installations. Known for her use of geometric abstraction, Begum has made a series of new large-scale works that respond specifically to the Mead Gallery’s architecture. Through a variety of materials and painterly techniques, she explores the physical experience of light as it interacts with her work and the gallery space.

The exhibition also features her first video installation which captures the fugitive light in a woodland as it cycles through the seasons.

Broadcast partnerships are a key part of our programme, helping us reach a wider audience via TV, radio and through web on YouTube and social media.

We have worked closely with the BBC and Sky Arts to create a range of programmes that you can watch or listen to, that are commissioned from Coventry and demonstrate the heritage, creativity, innovation, care and social activism of our city.

BBC iPLAYER 2 Tone: The Sound of Coventry Music, archive and new interviews, this is the story of 2 Tone - a unique musical phenomenon that exploded out of Coventry in the summer of 1979. Including a rare interview with Jerry Dammers, the architect of 2 Tone, and contributions from other key players.

Coventry Cathedral: Building for a New Britain Featuring a wealth of rarely seen archive film, together with voices from yesterday and today, the film tells the story of the new cathedral and of the times in which it was created.

Classic British Cars: Made in Coventry To celebrate the award of UK City of Culture 2021 to Coventry, local boy Mark Evans tells the full history of the classic cars made in Coventry.

Arena | Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes Docudrama portrait of Delia Derbyshire, the

electronic sound pioneer behind the Doctor Who theme tune, that explores the idea that this extraordinary composer herself lived outside of time and space.

Dance Passion – Thu 3 Feb 2022 Dance Passion shines a light on the UK dance sector with a digital box set on BBC iPlayer and a highlights programme on BBC Four.

The five hour-long programmes, introduced

by Josie d’Arby and Karim Zeroual, include two live segments from Warwick Arts Centre, celebrating Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture. Dance Passion covers all genres and features established and emerging companies, pulling together talent across all four nations, including groups from Coventry and Warwickshire.

Dance Passion is a collaboration between BBC Arts and One Dance UK. Funded by BBC Arts and Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants programme All Coventry UK City of Culture broadcasts can be found at bbc.co.uk/cityofculture and are available for 12 months after first broadcast date.

BROADCAST PROJECT

SKY ARTS Landmark Landmark was a new competition for 2021 from Sky Arts looking for an artist to create a new public artwork to be displayed in Coventry.

Eighteen artists competed in heats across the UK. In each episode, three artists competed to impress local communities and local figureheads with their artistic creation. Six artists each region were picked by the experts for a place in the final, and a chance to make history, by winning the coveted prize of a permanent landmark of their creation for UK City of Culture in Coventry.

The winning artwork is a sculpture In Honour of Ira Aldridge by artist Favour Jonathan which you can see in on the roof of the former IKEA Building in Coventry.

Sky Arts Inside Art, January / February 2022 Landscape Artist of the Year - from 12 Jan Landscape Artist of the Year returns with a new group of artists jostling for the top spot as they capture some of the UK’s most stunning scenery. Celebrating the glory and beauty of the natural world, this year’s series features sweeping vistas of our coastlines, countryside and city centres to remind us that our environment needs to be protected and nurtured at all costs.

YOUR VISIT Coventry and the surrounding region are some of the most accessible locations in the UK. Situated right at the heart of the country, you can comfortably arrive at any of our gateways by any mode of transport.

BY TRAIN Coventry is on the West Coast Main Line, with regular train services linking the area with other major UK towns and cities. Trains operate every 20 minutes (on average) to central London, which is only one hour away using Avanti West Coast services.

BY ROAD PUBLIC TRANSPORT Keeping Coventry connected with our surrounding suburbs, National Express Coventry offers regular bus services, seven days a week and provides a convenient solution to discovering the city without using a car. Famous for its easy access to the national motorway network, Coventry is within a two-hour car journey for 75% of the UK population.

PARKING Coventry has a wide selection of short and long stay car parks that are perfect for every

visit. Many of Coventry’s car parks, including Belgrade Plaza NCP and Salt Lane, are situated within walking distance of the city’s top attractions.

CYCLING Looking for a sustainable way to see the city? West Midlands Cycle Hire provides a fun, healthy and sustainable way to explore Coventry, with bikes available to hire 24 hours a day, every day of the year, from more than 20 docking stations located in the city centre and surrounding areas.

COVENTRY VISITOR INFORMATION Coventry’s Visitor Information Centre is located just outside Coventry Railway Station. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are on-hand, seven days a week, to help with a range of city information, while offering a variety of guides, maps and souvenirs.

The City of Culture events programme provides BSL interpreted, audio description, captioned and relaxed performances where possible. Where these are available, they will be detailed on the individual event pages on the website, where we aim to share access information and content information for the event, including timings, interactivity and trigger warnings.
