DANIEL LISMORE: BE YOURSELF, EVERYONE ELSE IS ALREADY TAKEN A major exhibition by the critically acclaimed international artist Daniel Lismore.

Raised in Coventry, Lismore is an artist, designer, perfumer, stylist and human rights warrior. A truly spectacular and immersive experience, this UK premiere celebrates the intersection of art, architecture, world cultures, beauty and fashion.

The exhibition includes Lismore’s sculptural ensembles, each fashioned from his personal collection of over 7,000 curiosities and displayed alongside his personal archive of photography, film and found objects. Many artworks are on display for the first time and reflect Lismore’s multi-dimensional identity -

BROKEN ANGEL Transforming a fractured past into a shared future, Broken Angel is a series of new site-specific installations to temporarily replace the Angel of the Eternal Gospel at Coventry Cathedral.

Her stunning installation of a broken piece of window glass will be magnified and projected onto the screen where the original Angel used to be, appearing as an abstract reflection of an Angel’s wing.

The original window, part of John Hutton’s great glass West Screen, was destroyed in an act of vandalism in 2020 and has been left as a blank pane of glass since. Broken Angel is Coventry Cathedral’s creative response to filling the space.

Broken Angel features three different artists between November 2021 and the end of August 2022, starting with Anne Petters.

In March, the second of three installations is created by Barbara Walker and the work focuses on the way historic art uses objects to describe figures in faith stories and shape how we understand their identities.

ART Celebrating one of Coventry Cathedral’s finest sculptors, Jacob Epstein who created St Michael and the Devil which is displayed on the wall outside of the Coventry Cathedral.

This Jacob Epstein exhibition brings masterpieces from national collections together in the amazing setting of the Cathedral, for the first time. Including the extraordinary Jacob and the Angel from Tate Britain.

The Show Windows aims to inspire hope, adventure and imagination. It invites us to rediscover Coventry, as ever-evolving and home to diverse and creative communities and businesses, and its people.

THROUGH THE LENS OF MASTERJI Masterji was a well-known figure within Coventry as the first Indian photographer in the city.

This exhibition showcases the portraits he took over his five-decades-long career and is accompanied by interviews with members of the pioneering generation of South Asian migrants in Coventry. Explore the wider context of migration to the city and learn the challenges faced by many migrants coming to the UK. Maganbhai Patel (1923 – 2018), better-known as Masterji, came to national attention in 2016 when, at the age of 94, he received his first solo exhibition as part of Coventry’s bid to become UK City of Culture.

PIONEERING COVENTRY: THE POST-WAR PHOTOGRAPHY OF RICHARD SADLER Three exhibitions will focus on the life and work of Richard Sadler, Coventry’s pre-eminent postwar photographer, including prints, projections, talks and guided visits. Associated video content with audio description and subtitles will be made accessible during the exhibitions.

CHAPTER 3: THE HAIRY BARGE A moving sculpture, which is tracked via an associated tracker app, will be stopping along the Grand Union, Oxford and Coventry canals to meet with locals and share their stories.

In March, the sculpture will arrive at the Coventry Canal Basin to mark the beginning of a series of talks, workshops and events leading up to the summer’s installation.

The work reconnects us to our physical world and explores existing connections between cultures.

CAMP, DO WE GO AROUND THE HOUSES, OR DO HOUSES GO AROUND US? Lucy Tomlins investigates how artists can use materials to highlight concerns around sustainability in contemporary society. In collaboration with a team of practitioners, she has made a series of shelters from mycelium, Portland stone and cob to create a camp. This temporary residence is made up of huts, tents and other structural forms typically used by soldiers, refugees or travellers.

MACHINE MEMOIRS: SPACE REFIK ANADOL

The Reel Store, a new immersive digital gallery opens in the heart of Coventry City Centre from May 2022 and will be a brand new visitor attraction suitable for the whole family.

Machine Memoirs: Space will be a 360 degree experience, suitable for the whole family, with a futuristic, awe-inspiring display that captures the beauty and spectacle of space in waves of colour and light. Whether you have an interest in space, are looking to have fun with the family, or want to grab the most instagrammable pictures in Coventry, this is an exhibition not-to-bemissed.

Opening The Reel Store will be the UK premiere of Refik Anadol’s Machine Memoirs: Space. The product of a long-term collaboration with NASA, the exhibition uses artificial intelligence to reimagine two million publicly available images taken by satellite and telescopes, transporting visitors from the centre of Coventry to the deepest regions of outer space.

The Reel Store has been made possible by the generous support of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, Coventry City Council via the Council’s Cultural Capital Investment Fund, the Government’s Getting Building Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP), The Patrick Trust, The Linbury Trust, Edward Cadbury Charitable Trust and Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.

APRIL 2022 VARIOUS LOCATIONS ACROSS COVENTRY FREE, NON-TICKETED

ART COMMUNITY FAMILY FRIENDLY

RIVERS OF THE WORLD Our Coventry primary and secondary SEN students have been engaged in a 2-year international art and education project by Thames Festival Trust. They’ve created a collection of artworks about River Sherbourne in Coventry and the River Ruvu in Tanzania.

Due to Covid-19, the artworks were created both at home and in school, showing the strength of spirit and imagination of the artists and young people in the face of a global pandemic.

These exciting works will be exhibited through physical and digital displays at different sites and venues across Coventry as an opportunity to see how creative our future generation is outside the classroom.

Project Background Rivers of the World creates collaborative artworks inspired by river themes and environmental studies, linking primary and secondary schools in the UK with partner schools in developing countries around the world. The two-year programme encourages pupils to learn about their local river in the first year, then learning about a river in another country in the second year. Working with a local artist, ideas are channelled creatively into drawings, paintings, photographs, sculpture and other visual media.
