I often say that I did not choose the Y; the Y chose me. Maybe you feel that way, too. You came in one day, felt the difference and never left.
I started working at the Y over 30 years ago as a college student. I had to take a semester off to earn some money and worked a variety of jobs, including being a coach for a new program at the Y.
I had such a great experience that I came back every summer – working at the Y in any way I could, from maintenance and landscaping to coaching and management. The mission motivated me and gave me opportunities to be a part of changing lives.
That hasn’t changed. I continue to be grateful that I get to be a part of the Y and make a difference by serving the community we love. Remarkably, 500,000 people came through the doors of the Y throughout the year in 2023. You can read just a few of their stories in these pages.
I am humbled by this work and how our team makes a difference each day. I am particularly grateful to the nearly 700 organizations and individuals who supported our Y in 2023 with charitable donations. Together, we are moving forward to achieving our long-term vision of serving 30% of our community.
Our mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all shines as bright today as it did when I started. With
3,060 seniors were strengthened by group exercise classes and fitness programs dedicated to healthy living.
70 families were brought together through our Supervised Visitation Program.
18,200 members used the Y to become stronger in spirit, mind, and body.
2,450 kids participated in swimming lessons and water safety program.
1,300 1:1 meetings the Y chaplain conducted with members and staff.
5,000 adults and kids participated in the Bernick’s Family Fitness Series.
1,840 members or program participants received scholarship assistance.
20,000 interactions with youth through memberships, programs, and events.
A common thread weaves through these Y legacy donors. Each of them cites strong multi-generational familial beliefs in the importance of generosity and supporting the community. Dating back decades, the Andersons, Bernicks, Bitzans, Coborns, Helgesons, and Windfeldts all witnessed their family members help to build the greater St. Cloud region into what it is today.
Whether it was living out Christian values, setting an extra place at the table, befriending customers, or leading early capital campaigns for the Y and other nonprofits, these leaders observed remarkable examples of philanthropy and are proud to carry it forward today.
Long-Time Community Members
“We love the Y’s focus on kids and families through the programs and services they offer. My mom, Arlene Helgeson, was involved with fundraising for the first YMCA building and later expansions. We benefited by taking classes and exercising while our sons played in the childcare room. Later they learned to swim there. We all enjoyed the pool.
“We believe THE Y ENHANCES THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS OF OUR COMMUNITY and is an asset that helps attract people to our city.”
“The St. Cloud Area Family YMCA ensures that ALL PEOPLE IN THE CENTRAL MINNESOTA area have access to the opportunities and resources necessary to be active, learn, and grow.
“ATS has a program which supports the overall well-being of our employees and contractors. This encompasses all aspects of life including social, financial, career, community, as well as physical well-being. We feel the YMCA is our partner in promoting these areas of wellness within our organization.”

COBORN WRIGHT
Senior Vice President –Retail Support Services, Coborn’s
“Coborn’s is committed to giving back to the communities in which we serve. Our business has received strong support and we, in turn, want to invest in places where our team members live, work, and raise families.
“The Y’s mission aligns with our company’s core value of ‘TREATING ALL WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT’ and serves as the ‘front porch’ of our community by being welcoming to all.”
ROLLIE ANDERSON (Pictured with wife, Barb.)“Our philosophy has always been that you need to TAKE CARE OF THE COMMUNITY THAT TAKES CARE OF YOU. We focus our philanthropic efforts in two key areas: youth and family, and supporting amenities that help make our community a better place. The YMCA and its mission fits well into both those objectives and we are happy to support it.”
(Pictured with extended family.)
Chair of the Community Support Committee, Director of Corporate Affairs, Bernick’s
“Our family and business have consistently supported the YMCA because it is a COMMUNITY FIXTURE WITH A STRONG REPUTATION AND ROLE. We are particularly pleased that the Y has taken the leadership role in providing indoor pools and are looking forward to the completion of the outdoor aquatics center. It’s filling a long-time community need.”

“The Y is one of the best resources we know that brings people together. Different ages, incomes, physical abilities, ethnic backgrounds…all come together at the Y.
“People of all ages go to the Y to be more physically fit, to have fun, to rehab, to learn to swim, to compete in a game. THE Y BRINGS US TOGETHER for the same reason – we all come to be our better selves.”
Countless people know and depend on the YMCA. The Y responds to the needs of our community. We’re dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the community’s health and well-being, and providing support to all.
Drowning is the second leading cause of death and injury among children ages 1-14 in Minnesota. According to the USA Swimming Foundation, 45% of Hispanic/Latino children and 64% of African American children have little to no swimming ability.
This was the motivation to launch the Safety Around Water (SAW) program in 2022 in partnership with St. Cloud School District 742. Thanks to the generosity of lead donors Gate City Bank, Pilgrim’s (Cold Spring), and others, this program is offered free to all second graders
from seven elementary schools in the school district.
In these classes, children are introduced to swimming basics and learn fundamental water safety skills, including how to identify safe places to swim. They are also given a culturally appropriate swimsuit, goggles, and a string bag, and are transported to and from the Y.
“This program is a shining example of what can happen when partners come together to solve a community issue,” said District 742 Superintendent Laurie Putnam.
The St. Cloud Area Family YMCA is one of only two Y’s in the nation to provide supervised visitations to parents who have temporarily lost custody of their children or need a supervised, conflict-free environment to exchange their child(ren) without encountering the other parent.
In 2023, the SVSE program served an average of serving seven counties in Minnesota and providing zoom visits for a family in Texas.
Theresa doesn’t mince words when talking about her life’s journey. “I had to hit rock bottom before I really faced my alcoholism.”
An eight-month jail sentence after a DWI in 2023 motivated her to finally quit drinking. She’s been sober for a year and is working to rebuild her relationships with her children.
Partnerships are critical for the St. Cloud Y. Our staff has teamed up with Camp Olson, a YMCA Camp near Longville, MN, to send middle schoolers to a weeklong camp – free of charge, thanks to donor support.
Carter, a 7th grader who loves the opportunity to sail at camp, is a seasoned veteran on track to become a Leader in Training (LIT).
“The first year I was a little nervous, but I love the outdoors, so I tried many things. The camp counselors are awesome and the
food is amazing,” Carter said. “It’s just such a fun experience, I don’t have to worry about anything, and I learn so much.” The camp is more than fun and good food, it’s a chance for teens to gain confidence and develop leadership and coping skills.
For Mom Theresa, a long-time member of the Y, she is grateful for her son to have this opportunity as she doesn’t have the financial resources for him to attend camp each summer.
“I’ve seen growth and maturity in Carter after he returns from camp,” she said.
participated in this program during the 2022-23 academic year.
“We know that sometimes a good idea doesn’t always guarantee success. It takes vision, coordination, commitment, collaboration— and a lot of hard work. This kind of partnership is a rare thing. The Y has truly made a difference in these students’ lives.”
Through the court system, she was ordered to have her time with her children supervised by members of the Supervised Visitation/ Exchange Program at the St. Cloud Y. Theresa spends four hours a week with her children enjoying the many amenities the Y has to offer.
“This program is really nothing shy of amazing to me. I get to have 1:1 time with my kiddos and the Y staff is supportive and non-judgmental,” she said. Her children particularly enjoy playing in the Kid Zone, pool, and gyms.
Working full-time as a medical biller and collections specialist at a clinic and spending time with her children, Theresa is filled with hope for her future. “I have so much to look forward to.”
Students who attend this program are nominated by their teachers or counselors.
Our St. Cloud Y has sent to Camp Olson since 2019 when
After the current St. Cloud Y facility opened in 2017, the local Board of Directors kept dreaming. What could be next? What if everyone had easier access to a Y? How could it transform a community?
We have big visions around here – God-sized visions,”
Y Executive Director Greg Gack said. “It started with this current facility where we went from serving 6,000 to now more than 18,000 members.”
Along with Y leadership, the Board of Directors leaned in to explore a long-range plan and imagine the impact the Y could have on improving the health, well-being, livability, and vibrancy of the Central Minnesota community. They drafted plans of what it could look like, completed studies and cast a 10-year-vision for what it would take.
The YMCA is a place that looks and feels like the front porch of the community where members and guests come together to strengthen their minds, bodies, and spirits,”
said Bryan Burns, a Y member and board director who served as board chair from 2020 to 2022. “Currently the Y serves about 15 percent of the community. We envision a future whereby the Y expands locations and offerings to serve 30 percent of the local community.”
The 30% target is a key threshold to not only changing individual lives and families, but an entire community. “This means that about one third of our residents will be more committed to improving their physical and mental health, and have a go-to place for fun and socialization,” said Melinda Gau, a long-time Y member and supporter. “The Y is one of my favorite places on earth. I always feel good when I’m there — and it will be great to see more people make it their favorite place.”
Achieving the 10-year vision includes expanded spaces, new locations, and diversifying member engagement to serve as the community cornerstone for healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility. Plans for the first two priorities — an outdoor water park and a facility in St. Joseph — are already underway.
I’m 100% behind the YMCA vision to support 30% of our community,”
Jeff Gau said. Jeff is a Y member, supporter, and leader of the Outdoor Water Park Project with his wife, Melinda. “Executing on a long-term vision can only be realized if the organization is operationally and fiscally strong. Our YMCA has a demonstrated a track record of performance.”
The deliberate planning and execution date back to 2010 as the vision took shape for the current Y facility and leaders stepped up with financial support.

Imagine a place where family, friends, and community members gather to savor the best of summer and create lasting memories. Plans for the outdoor waterpark, located behind the current Y, include features that will attract all ages; from a lazy river and shallow swimming spaces to an array of slides, and entertainment areas to lounge and gather. This will be a regional destination where generations of people can connect through outdoor activities that ignite adventure, joy, and fun.
Imagine a community center for all ages that’s designed for the vibrant and growing city of St. Joseph. Packed with the elements that make the Y special, this location is being developed in partnership with the City of St. Joseph. Plans include a series of features that the St. Joseph community is seeking, ranging from gymnasiums, social gathering spaces, a pool, and pickleball courts to fitness and multi-generational spaces. State bonding and local optional sales tax is expected to support about half of this $24-million facility.

“We’re here today because our community rallied around our Y a decade ago and believed our Y could be a beacon – not just for our community, but nationally,” said Dawn Zimmerman, who served on the board and action team to build the current facility.
Now, we have an opportunity to make an even bigger impact – to reach and empower our youth, strengthen families, and be a place where every person can belong and feel valued. This isn’t just a vision. It’s a clear plan our Y can execute on with this community.”
Volunteers are stepping forward to help lead the way with a shared vision to engage and impact generations.
The YMCA holds a special place in my heart as I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact it has on the lives of children and families,”
said Becky Estby, who currently serves as the board chair.
“The Y is so much more than just a fitness center; it is a vital hub for our community, fostering connections, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging. As a volunteer, I am dedicated to supporting an organization that enriches the lives of thousands, providing essential programs, fostering community bonds, connecting families, and ensuring accessibility for all, embodying the true spirit of unity and well-being.”
“Our community has had a strong desire for an aquatics center. The YMCA was the best qualified partner to help us reach this goal with the building of the new Y and the indoor water park in 2017. It’s been a great collaboration and the plan to move forward with the outdoor water park is exciting. It is certainly a bright spot in the city and region with the expansion plans. As I talk with other mayors around the country, the most successful communities are those that have public-private partnerships. This is a great example of that.”
- Dave Kleis, Mayor of the City of St. Cloud
