A COMMITMENT TO A BETTER FUTURE FOR ALL
BE THE CHANGE –MEET SHANNON
Shannon joined the Y more than nine years ago. She’s been through a lot, but that hasn’t stopped her from fighting for her health and recovery. Shannon is genuine and strong. She previously struggled with addiction, is eight years clean and sober, and works on her recovery each day.
Over the years, Shannon’s Y story has had multiple connections, including supervised visits with her son as well as most recently focusing on her body, mind, and spirit through group fitness classes and personal training with Kat. She has dealt with some health scares and wasn’t happy with her weight and eating habits, and Kat has walked alongside in her remarkable success. Shannon particularly enjoys her relationship with Kat. It’s obvious they share a mutual sentiment toward each other. Shannon gives back to the community by speaking monthly to the treatment center she attended.
Shannon is an inspiration. She recently demonstrated her health and fitness success to her husband with her strength on a Boundary Waters kayak trip. She learned through recovery that she wanted her outside to match her inside, and that’s what the Y and Kat have helped her achieve.
A HAPPY PLACE TO FEEL KNOWNMEET TERI AND SOPHIA
Teri and her daughter, Sophia, thoroughly enjoy all the Y has to offer. Teri initially heard about the Y through a Y presentation at her workplace. Sophia is a friendly, outgoing 3rd grader who loves the Y’s KidZone, Taekwondo, Safety Around Water, swim lessons, kids camp, and most of all, the many wonderful friendships made along the way.
Teri serves the community in an administrative role helping families on county assistance find jobs and create an employment plan. She appreciates the alone time to work on her health goals and social connections, especially as a single mom. They are glad to have the opportunity to focus on their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health – a positive outlet, together as a family.
For Teri , the Y has been a vital part of her journey, including serious health issues, weight loss surgery, taking care of a loved one, bridging the financial gap for a Y membership, and making herself a priority. The Y membership and Teri’s commitment to her and Sophia’s healthy living has meant a new and improved way of life. Teri said the Y is her “happy place”, their family fun time. It’s a good place to build relationships and feel known.
