Outdoor recreation is important to those of us who live in Idaho. This time of year, folks head to the hills with their skis and snowboards, or put on snowshoes for a leisurely cross country excursion, or for a faster adventure... they fire up their snowmobiles. Once the snow melts, it's time to take your AVT or truck to the backcountry for fishing, hunting and camping.
Whatever your choice of outdoor recreation, you need equipment. For most of us, that means traveling to the big city sporting goods store or shopping online. But... what if you could find what you need right in your home town?
Marksman Outfitters is now open in the Gooding Lumber building located just north of the railroad tracks in Gooding (301 East Rosevelt Street).
Owner Kaleb Brunson has been gunsmithing for 30+ years, and a gun shop/sporting goods store just seemed like a great idea. Along with his wife Christalyn (and family), they are building up a supply of guns, knives, archery equipment, as well as fishing rods and lures. They also have camping/backpacking essentials. And if they don't have it, they will do their best to get what you need.
Retail sporting goods is just part of the business. They are working with the Gooding Recreation District to make sure kids have what they need for the district's sports programs by setting up a rental program. Kids grow out of cleats and other equipment quickly, and buying new stuff every year can get expensive. Being able to rent equipment helps kids enjoy sports programs without worring about the expense.
Of course, if you need gun repair or restoration, Marksman Outfitters has two gunsmiths to handle anything and everything you can throw at them.
U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) introduced the Resiliency for Ranching and Natural Conservation Health (RANCH) Act. This legislation promotes resilient and healthy rangelands and effective grazing management across the West.
"As a rancher, I have seen firsthand the immense benefits grazing brings to Idaho's public lands and our agricultural economy," said Senator Risch. "The RANCH Act ensures grazing management decisions properly benefit ranchers and rural communities to maintain Idaho's way of life."
Open 9 to 5, Monday thru Friday (and Saturdays by appointment, call 208-969-0842), they welcome you to stop by and check out the special order of Valentine firearms. Come in and grab your special gal her favorite color and caliber. You can also have a cup of coffee and see the new Byrna display.
Byrna is CO2 launcher designed to provide civilians, law enforcement officers, and security professionals with a safe, reliable and effective non-lethal alternative to traditional firearms that allow individuals to protect and defend themselves, their families and their community without the need to resort to deadly force.
"Livestock grazing plays a critical role for Wyoming's ranchers to maintain rangeland health and protect their livelihoods," said Senator Barrasso. "All across America, we depend on our hardworking ranchers. The RANCH Act gives them the support they need to work through natural disasters and efficiently navigate permits and grazing rights. Our bill promotes robust rangeland for livestock, creates habitats for wildlife, and makes life easier for Wyoming's ranching communities."
Cosponsors of this legislation include U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), and Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.).
The RANCH Act will:
▪ Allow temporary utilization of vacant grazing allotments during extreme events/disasters;
▪ Allocate funding for rangeland health and resiliency projects and public access agreements to land-locked public lands for co-benefits to hunting and recreation;
▪ Extend the period of grazing permits/leases for up to 20-years, when certain conditions are met; and
▪ Provide responsive and nimble management through the use of a categorical exclusion for renewal of certain grazing permits/ leases and for certain actions during extreme events/disasters. February 5,

A week ago it was time for me do an annual check-in. Every year about the same time, I get this notice. I don't have to make calls or even have to fill out any paperwork. It's a good thing for this annual check-in because I have less peer pressure than the years previous.
The check-in I'm talking about is the good 'ol birthday. The more check-ins you have, the longer you live! Good concept. For the most part I'm usually working on my birthday.
The last few years have caught me with a sequence I don't really like. Three years ago I was sick on my birthday. Two years ago I was sick on my birthday. Last year I think I missed being sick on my actual birthday.
This year, just days before my birthday, my nose tried on a new pair of jogging shoes... all it wanted to do was run. It ran when I was sitting down. It ran while I was driving. It even tried to run while I slept. I was originally going to enjoy a hot spring close by, but I gave that idea up.
But... since my nose was running, I figured it could run me out to eat. I did manage to be calm enough to eat dinner out.
Normally I don't get sick, especially on my birthday. During the winter I have a pretty good mix of being inside and outside as well. I'm going
to have to petition my internal clock to get me off of this new schedule it has chosen.
A lot of people get colds in the winter simply because they don't drink enough water. In the summer you sweat a lot of the toxins out. Your intake of water keeps things flushed. Drinking plenty of water in the winter is also important. It keeps your blood and immune systems running with better efficiency.
Many times bottle water doesn't solve the water need thing. During processing the important minerals are depleted. Whenever possible, drink more water that doesn't come from a plastic bottle. Sodium and potassium are electrolytes that help maintain body fluids and blood volume, as well as other minerals in your system. Review your intake.
Positive attitude increases wellness. The "I won't accept being sick" attitude has a lot of clout. Positive and negative attitudes must balance. Too much negativity tends to block the body's health because it is using too much energy to change to good.
Coupled with sun rays, the body can be healthier with humor. It's like a reward to the anti-body crew inside. You can say humor in life is like having ice cream every day (which also helps).
As of now, I'm cancelling my getting sick on my birthday subscription for next year.
Having my "Cup of Tee" without jogging shoes.
At a time when the United States Postal Service (USPS) is under strain due to a lack of carriers and supply shortages, Idaho communities have reported struggles in conveying needs to the USPS and have experienced sudden and surprising post office closures. U.S. Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch and Representatives Russ Fulcher and Mike Simpson (all R-Idaho) introduced legislation in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to improve access to local USPS post offices. The Mandating Advisable and Informed Locations and Solutions (MAILS) Act would require more community input before relocating a post office as well as encourage recommendations from municipalities to request additional post offices.
“Post offices remain a valued part of our communities and a respected means of sending goods and messages,” said Crapo. “The communities, especially rural towns across Idaho, that rely on local post offices must continue to have access to prompt, reliable and efficient service responsive to their needs.”
“Many communities in Idaho lack access or have waited years for a physical post office,” said Risch. “The MAILS Act ensures USPS considers the needs of Idahoans who rely on the postal service when they apply for new postal facilities.”
“Idahoans understand all too well how the closure of local post offices can create significant hardships for both residents and businesses," said Representative Fulcher. "Whether it’s to receive medications, business documents, or to stay connected with loved ones, millions depend on reliable and accessible mail delivery—regardless of how rural their neighborhood is. That is why I introduced the MAILS Act alongside my Idaho congressional colleagues...

Timothy Shirley, 69, a resident of Parker, Arizona and formerly of Wendell, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025 in Parker.
He was born on April 14, 1955 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Hazel and Seldon Shirley. He grew up in Shoshone, Idaho, with his five siblings Wilma Leslie, Melvin Shirley, Linda Pearson, Becky Armenta, and Diane Tolman.
He grew up around the farm, which would then later inspire his love and passion for cars, trucks and all things auto related.
He met the love of his life Pam Shirley around October of 1974, and quickly found out that they were meant to be forever. They were later married on January 17, 1976. Their love story continued on for over half a century and they were blessed with four sons, Timmy, Nathan, Nick and Paxton. They raised their sons in Wendell, Idaho where he loved to take care of his truck and cars and to help Pam garden. When their youngest graduated, they started their new adventure together on the road traveling until they found their home in Arizona, where they made their own oasis in the desert.
When he wasn't working, he loved to spend his time with family and friends on ATVs. They always took the opportunity to go on adventures and go camping. He loved to explore the desert and discover new trails and mines to share with people. Along with his love for the desert, he loved being at home. When it got too hot in the summertime, he didn't mind being inside and spending time with his dogs watching a western movie. He loved to sit outside on the patio and watch the sunrise and sunset next to a warm fire and the love of his life.
Tim was one of a kind. He had an endearing smile, a contagious laugh, and the gift to talk to anyone. He was a generous and giving person, and would help anyone in need. If there was one word to describe Tim, it would be loving and he was proud to show it. He loved his family, friends, and the life he and Pam had created. He was the perfect husband, dad, and grandfather.
Tim is survived by his loving wife - Pam; children - Nathan, Nick, and Paxton; grandchildren - Ashley, Kaitlyn, Jordyn, Tristin, and Mackenzie; and great-grandchildren - Bellamy, Everett, and River. He is also remembered by his sisters - Wilma, Linda, Becky, and Diane, as well as numerous beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents - Hazel and Seldon; brother - Melvin; and son - Timmy.
Please join us to share our memories and love for Tim. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Wendell. Burial will follow at the Wendell Cemetery.
Funeral services are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Wendell Chapel. Condolences, memories and photos can be shared with the family by following the obituary link at www.demarayfuneralservice.com
Leo Coleman, 90, a resident of Wendell, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at his home in Wendell. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service - Wendell Chapel.
Donald "Don" Keith Larson, 92, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2025 at the North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service - Gooding Chapel.
Charlotte Juanita Childers peacefully passed away on January 13, 2025, at St. Luke's Medical Center in Twin Falls with her family members by her side. She was born in Jerome, Idaho on April 27, 1935 and was 89 years old.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband – Don Childers; and two son-in-laws – Terry Bailey and Steve Ploss. Don and Charlotte had four children – Gaylin (Pam) Childers; Janet Ploss; Rod (Linda) Childers; and Geneal (Jett) Lorenzen; six grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren.
Charlotte worked outside the home for many years helping to provide for the family. She drove school bus in Jerome, then worked in Twin Falls for many years at Buttrey's Food Store; she would then come home to help in the fields and help with the animals - sheep, cattle, pigs, horses, 4-H, custom grain threshing and cooking for the field hands. It didn't matter to her the task; if it needed to be done she jumped in and did it! Char never complained, she not only did the work needed but expected everyone around her to do the same.
She worked as a checker and in the customer ser4vice counter at Simerley's in Wendell for 26 years and was well respected by her co-workers. She expected everyone around her to pull their weight; did I mention this woman was only 4' 11"; yet could work most everyone under the table.
Upon asking the family members what their memories were of Char, it was her strong grip and her genuine interest in what you had to say, many commented, "she was a firecracker!" She was born and raised in Idaho; she had a very sharp mind, we often said we didn't need Google, just ask mom; she could tell you everyone's name and their history along where they lived and had moved to. If you were looking for a place in the whole valley she could direct you to the front door.
Charlotte and Don were known for driving around the valley, just out for a weekend drive. They didn't like to let any grass grow under their feet. They would be the first help a neighbor in need or loan out their equipment or time, always with a smile.
The family will hold a celebration of life on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Wendell Senior Center located at 380 1st Ave. East in Wendell.
They are requesting in lieu of flowers donations be made to Shriners Children's Hospital.
Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Wendell Chapel. Condolences, memories and photos can be shared with the family by following the obituary link at www.demarayfuneralservice.com
