Water Supply Outlook Report

“A wet, cold February brought ample snow to the region which improved the snowpack in all basins across Idaho after a very dry January,” said Erin Whorton, Water Supply Specialist for NRCS Idaho. “Snowpack now ranges between 84 to 140% of normal on March 1st.”

The Wood and Lost basins received well above normal precipitation during February, ranging from 130 to 250% of normal, improving the total water year precipitation to 80 to 100%. Snowpack varies across the area ranging from 80 to 115% of normal with above normal snowpack west of the Wood and Lost basins but dropping below normal to the east. To meet median peak snowpack levels by April 1st, the Little Wood and Big Lost Basin will need slightly above normal March precipitation. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center’s 30-day outlook suggests above normal precipitation conditions in March, with equal chances for above or below normal temperatures. The projected wetter than normal conditions are encouraging for further developing snowpack in the east and bringing it closer to normal peak values by April 1st.

Magic Reservoir is above normal for storage as of March 1, at 109% of normal. Little Wood Reservoir is now above normal storage at 109% of normal, whereas Mackay Reservoir is still below normal at 86%.

District IV Solo & Ensemble Competition

Gooding Senators Music congratulates two students on their performance at the District IV Solo and Ensemble Competition. This competition takes a lot of individual preparation outside of class time and both of these students worked incredibly hard on their solos.

Miriam Goodman competed in the Soprano Vocal solo category and received second place in our district! Miriam will be competing at the state solo competition in Pocatello on May 2-3.

Rya Pereira competed in the Euphonium/Baritone solo category and placed as first alternate in our district. Rya will have the opportunity to compete at state if any of those scoring higher in her category are unable to attend.

This is an incredibly competitive event and both of these students received outstanding scores. Please join me in congratulating these students on their performance and hard work!

Cup of Tee by

It's hard to believe that Spring is around the corner when there snow is still on the ground. Many farms throughout the Treasure Valley and Magic Valley have tractors out in the fields doing spring farming. This time of year, many farmers are burning weeds and fields. Many structures are lost each year due to fires. Before starting a fire, they should check to see if burn permits are required in their area. Even if permits aren't required one should advise their local fire department. Many times people see smoke and call the fire department. Without the proper details, this can cause false alarms. Hopefully, a little fall maintenance has been done to reduce weed heights and weeds in tight areas. Sometimes, prior to burning, one may mow down or weed-eat in ditches near buildings and along fence rows. This reduces fuel that can become out of control fire sources.

A shout to neighbors with the intention of burning is a very courteous consideration. Perhaps a schedule can be made in a co-op effort. So many accidental fires are caused by lack of help and equipment. Barns, garages, fences, haystacks and houses are consumed by fire. Plastic gated pipe should be removed if weeds

Tee Hurd

are really tall. After burning the weed, the pipe can be reinstalled. This is a lot of work but expensive pipe can be saved if disassembled or previously cleaned up before burning.

Once a fire is started, it creates its own bellows effect pushing the fire at faster speeds. A check on the weather forecast may show wind storms in advance. An upcoming wind can push the fire out of control.

Tools to stop fires should be checked prior to burning. A farm disc may need a little grease or a flat tire might need a little air. Fire extinguisher should have a visual to be sure they are full. Shovels should be placed for easy access. Many times a shovel could be on the other end of the farm or not in the vehicle it's normally in. Is the shovel sharp enough to cut sod? Spray tanks should be checked to make sure winter freezing hasn't broken the valves or lines.

Take a visual around the property to see if unnecessary clutter can be reduced before starting a fire. And... starting a fire with gasoline is never a recommended practice.

Follow up to make sure all fires are out! That fire that is "out" might rekindle an unattended fire. Just be sure... Just be safe!

This is another “Cup of Tee” not so hot.

Alex Arrien Taber

Alex Arrien Taber, age 20 of Shoshone, Idaho, passed away suddenly on February 27, 2025, in Moscow, ID, surrounded by family and close friends. Alex was born May 19, 2004, to Chris Taber and Lynda Lezamiz in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Alex attended Shoshone schools, participated in football and basketball, and graduated with honors in 2022. After graduation, he became a University of Idaho Vandal majoring in Agricultural Systems Management. He had plans to graduate early in 2026, and to continue studies in Aviation Mechanics.

Alex’s inquisitive nature made him always ask “how/ why?” He loved learning and was fascinated with “how” things worked. He had a unique gift of impressing his teachers with his witty sarcasm and his curious nature. This classroom interaction would forge special friendships with several of his professors during his college career.

Alex possessed a true love for farming. This was evident in the fact that he rarely traveled far from the family farms. He grew up running agricultural equipment at a very young age which often led to amusing commentary by observing neighbors. Noticed as the little kid driving the commanding semi, looking in between the steering wheel, or running a loader like an experienced adult, he became known as the “Blonde Bomber.” However young and cute he looked, he quickly earned respect for his aptitude in taking on responsibilities without the need for much instruction. He enjoyed working in all aspects of farming, whether at the Buena Vista, or at his dad’s custom farm business, his Uncle John’s farm or his Uncle Sid’s excavation business. Everyone enjoyed working with Alex for his work ethic and his teasing nature which always made the work more fun. Nothing made his mom and dad prouder than to hear someone say: “Gosh he’s such a talented kid.”

Alex’s hobbies included horseback riding in his younger years and dirt bike riding in the foothills as he became older. He and his brother, Patrick, along with several friends made time on weekends to ride together and challenge one another. Many videos, great memories, and lifelong bonds were created on these adventures.

Alex is survived by his loving parents, Chris Taber and Lynda Lezamiz; his grandparents, Donald and Beverly Taber all of Shoshone; his brother, Patrick Taber (Marika Versis) of Twin Falls; his half-siblings, Ethan (Tiffany) Taber of Rolla, MO; and Katelin (Nathan) Arnold of Rathdrum, ID; uncles and aunts, Darren (Amie) Taber of Shoshone, ID with cousins, Martin Taber, Moira Taber, and Megan Taber; Matt (Shirlee) Taber with cousins, Cole Davis, Madison Taber, and Hannah Taber; Mary Lou (Cisco) Limbago of Caldwell, ID with cousins, Brandi Limbago and Dan Limbago; John (Bonnie) Lezamiz of Twin Falls, ID with cousins, Brett Lezamiz, Luke Lezamiz, and Jodi Lezamiz; Margaret Lezamiz (John Schroeder) of Boise, ID with cousins, Luci Schroeder-Hart and Paul Schroeder; Sid (Ricki) Lezamiz of Twin Falls, ID with cousins, Midauti Lezamiz, Kelsey Fairfield, Karson Wright, and Joe Lezamiz; Robin (Karen) Lezamiz of Richfield, ID with cousins, Matthew (Ashley) Lezamiz, Michael (Parris) Lezamiz, and Mariah Lezamiz.

Alex was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ciriaco (Sid) and Luchy Lezamiz. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1228 S. Main St, Gooding, Idaho) followed by a Celebration of Life at the Gooding Basque Center, Gooding.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Alex’s name to the Gooding Basque Association, PO Box 517 Gooding, ID. 83330.

Gary Everett Cox

Gary Everett Cox, of Wendell, Idaho, passed away peacefully on the 1st of March, 2025, after a long struggle with congestive heart failure. He was 87 years old and the father of ten children – five sons and five daughters.

Gary was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on August 20, 1937, to Jordan Everett Cox and Alma Lois McBroom. He knew they loved each other and Gary talked of the great memories of his early growing up years with his mom and dad. He would help his mom in the kitchen baking bread and cinnamon rolls. His favorite childhood memory with his dad was when he became the "Black Misguwala," who was a tiger that sniffed him out of his hiding places then wrestled him to the floor and began to 'chew' him up. After World War II, his parents divorced. Later, Everett married Ellen Mae Jack. He and his brother, Jan, were now part of a blended family with step siblings, Karen and Jack. Later, a half-sister, Evette joined the family. When he was 9 years old living in Buhl, he started taking piano lessons. When he was 12, his piano teacher began teaching him how to play the organ. Soon after, he was called to play the organ for Sunday School for the Buhl LDS ward. He had many opportunities throughout his life to play the organ in church services.

The family moved to Wendell in the spring of 1953 when he was a sophomore in high school. There was no space in the 10th grade English class, so he was put into Mrs. Lamb's 11th grade English class. He sat behind a girl by the name of Joyce Stephenson, who was the Sunday School organist for the Wendell LDS Ward and who had heard he played the piano – so she was welcoming and friendly to him. They became good friends and attended Brigham Young University together. Gary married Joyce on December 13, 1957. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from Brigham Young University and was commissioned into the United State Air Force after completing the Air Force ROTC program in 1958. He started his military career as a fighter pilot in the Air Force which was his lifelong dream. His career took him and his family to Germany and many different stations in the United States. Together, they enjoyed making

many lasting friendships and serving others in the military and in their church. Later he earned a Master's degree in Public Administration.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a teacher and leader in various capacities including scouting, ward organist, and many leadership callings including branch president, bishop, stake president, mission president and temple president. He and his wife served as humanitarian service missionaries in Mongolia from 1994 to 1995 and then returned to Mongolia as Mission President from 1996 to 1999. They were then asked to serve in South Africa from 2003 to 2004 as Area Welfare Managers, visiting 14 African countries as humanitarian service missionaries. Shortly after returning home, they were called to return to Alaska where he served as the Temple President of the Anchorage Alaska Temple from 2004 to 2007. He also served as the Wendell Stake Patriarch and a sealer in the Twin Falls Idaho Temple.

He was also actively engaged in community service. He volunteered as the director of the Wendell Senior Center for 9 years, was a member of the American Legion and on the Wendell Cemetery Board.

He was preceded in death by his eternal companion, Joyce Stephenson Cox, his parents, and step-brother, Jack Cox.
