INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Summer edition of our Chamber Magazine. This is the time of year when Wexford really gets the chance to showcase all that’s special in our region. The population of our county swells dramatically as visitors flock to our coastal areas from Castletown to Duncannon. While our friends and colleagues at Visit Wexford take the lead and are doing a great job in promoting all things tourism for our county, it is important that we at County Wexford Chamber and all of our members support that good work. Our recent annual business awards event was once again a sell-out. The quality of the hundreds of entries was exceptional. So, it’s a big “hats off” to all who took part and congratulations to each category winner. The awards night is always so uplifting and positive for all who attend.

POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS

The mood is always better when the sun is shining. In our case, County Wexford has lots to be positive about. SETU recently launched its strategic plan which will deliver for Wexford. With a campus in Wexford, South Georgia University is already contributing to the future of our county. Both universities are now creating collaborative links that I expect will result in a great synergy with a hugely positive impact in the future. Large groups of students from South Georgia University have already been to Wexford this year. Soon, students will come to stay and study for full college semesters. The Marine Area Regulatory Authority (MARA) has been officially launched at Rosslare Europort and its HQ will be based at the Trinity Wharf development in Wexford Town. Rosslare Port continues to grow from strength to strength with record-breaking passenger numbers expected on multiple routes this summer. The recent investments by all of the ferry companies operating out of the port are a real vote of confidence in the port’s future. The economic benefits of the success of the port stretch well outside of its own boundaries as many businesses report increased footfall and spending by the many thousands of visitors who stop off on the way to and from the ferries. However, recent events and delays on the old road clearly demonstrate the M11 extension cannot come soon enough.

SUPPORT SUMMER EVENTS

It can’t be all work and no play. There are many summer festivals and events scheduled across the county, so I would ask that our business community supports those events in whatever way possible. A key project for County Wexford Chamber in the coming weeks and months will be to support the night-time economy, while we must also prepare for the National Fleadh Cheoil festival. This will require lots of input from our committees and any members who wish to volunteer. So, please do get in touch. Enjoy the Summer.

SETU launches first Strategic Plan

County Wexford Chamber was represented by President Brendan Crowley at the launch of South East Technological University’s (SETU) first strategic plan. Launched in May, the strategic plan, titled “Connecting for Impact”, sets out SETU’s ambitions over the coming years to establish itself as the anchor institution for the ongoing development of the South East.

Launched at three events, including at the Wexford Arts Centre, the strategic plan outlines SETU’s priorities, including the development of a new campus in Wexford.

This plan positions SETU at the centre of the South East of Ireland’s innovation region. The university will act as the pivot point for a world-renowned regional innovation ecosystem and will develop and exchange new knowledge for civic, economic, social and cultural impact.

Professor Veronica Campbell, SETU President, said SETU is “an anchor institution, an important change agent that will be central to addressing regional challenges – especially those relating to the green and digital transitions. The full implementation of this plan will see us expand our campuses and facilities, develop new courses in areas of regional needs, deepen our international partnerships and greatly enhance what we are doing in research and innovation – all in support of the development of the south east.”

Kennedy Summer School set for New Ross

The 2023 Kennedy Summer School is set to be hosted in the ancestral hometown and homestead of President John F Kennedy, New Ross, this August 31 to September 2. Set to join in events at the prestigious Summer School are leading expert speakers from both sides of the Atlantic: authors, ambassadors, politicians, news correspondents and academics who will focus on topical issues in Irish and U.S. politics and participate in debates on a wide range of subjects with the U.S., the EU and Northern Ireland to feature prominently.

Official opening

The Summer School will be officially opened by Her Excellency, Canadian Ambassador Nancy Smyth, who will address the Summer School audience and participate in a public interview with Eileen Dunne. Sports fans will be enthused to learn that football legend Martin O’Neill will discuss his extraordinary life in football and share his views on the future of the beautiful game.

Discussions and debates

Other events include expert panels set to discuss ‘Celebrity Politics’, as well as the 50th anniversary of Ireland’s membership of the European Union.

On Saturday, September 2, a US husband and wife political duo will discuss their opposing political viewpoints. Democratic political consultant James Carville was the lead strategist in Bill Clinton’s winning 1992 presidential campaign. He will appear alongside his wife and Republican political consultant Mary Matalin. Matalin served under President Ronald Reagan and was campaign director for George H. W. Bush.

The special guest of honour and speaker for the 2023 JFK Summer School Speakers Lunch luncheon event is EU Commissioner for Financial Services Mairead McGuinness. Ms McGuinness served as the First Vice-President of the European Parliament from January 2017 to October 2020, when she joined the European Commission. She was an MEP for 16 years.

Wexford entrepreneurs recognised by All-Ireland Business Foundation

Three Wexford entrepreneurs have been honoured for their services to entrepreneurship by being admitted as Fellows of the All-Ireland Business Foundation (FAIBF).

Calodagh McCumiskey, founder of Spiritual Earth, Wexford, and Thomas and Sorcha Kenny, K&K Windows, Craanford, were among 20 entrepreneurs conferred at the All-Ireland Business annual conference held at Croke Park in Dublin in May.

Spiritual Earth provides wellbeing solutions that help organisations create and maintain a ‘well culture’ that fosters innovation, cooperation and productivity. Calodagh delivers programmes that empower people and teams to boost their wellbeing and effectively manage stress in the modern world.

Established in 1995, K&K Windows has rapidly grown into one of Ireland’s largest fabricators and installers of uPVC and aluminium products for both residential and commercial clients.

All of their products are fabricated onsite at their factory in Craanford. The business had previously been recognised for its contribution to trade and commerce in Co. Wexford having been named as the Wexford Small Business Of The Year by the All-Ireland Business Foundation in 2021.

Gainfort secures top-level mentoring support

Fiona Gainfort, Director of Gainfort Hair & Beauty Supplies, has been selected to participate in the AIB Mentoring Access Initiative for Women in SMEs.

“I’m extremely grateful to AIB, the Irish Management Institute (IMI), and the 30% Club for choosing me as one of 10 female SME leaders,” said Fiona, who is also a Director of the Gainfort Academy. “I thoroughly enjoy working within the hair and beauty industry, alongside my husband and business partner, Michael. I am looking forward to improving my leadership skills given that Gainfort has grown to a 20-plus workforce in Wexford and Waterford.”

The 30% Club is a campaign to achieve better gender balance in business leadership. Successful applicants to this initiative partake in a year-long mentoring programme where they will have a mentoring partner, provided by AIB, access to the resources of the IMI, and the opportunity to build a network with other mentors and mentees.

“There is also a real opportunity for personal development too. As an SME, we rarely take the time to focus on our own development – this programme will ensure I take time to focus on that.”

Major expansion and renovation at Reynaers

In May, the multimillion-euro renovation and extension of the Reynaers Aluminium facility in Enniscorthy was officially unveiled.

The Belgian ambassador to Ireland, HE Karen Van Vlierberge, together with the Reynaers family and the CEO of Reynaers Group, Bert Geerinckx, officiated at celebrations to mark the renovation of the offices, upgraded production facility, and the extension of its warehouse. The company also held an Open Day to allow family and friends of employees, as well as neighbours from the local community to tour the facility.

Canadian Ambassador meets exporters

County Wexford Chamber was delighted to meet with the Canadian Ambassador, Ambassador, H.E. Nancy Smyth, on her visit to the Gorey area.

The meeting in the Hatch Lab in April was also attended by representatives from Irish Country Meats and KersiaMedentech, which export to Canada.

The meeting covered areas of common interest, and routes to market for Irish companies exporting to Canada.

It is hoped that this meeting will strengthen economic links between member businesses and Canada, as well as highlighting the value of Wexford as a location for Canadianowned businesses.

Celebration of Wexford-Normandy links

In June, Enniscorthy played host to a visit from the French Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Vincent Guérend. Monsieur Guérend spoke to a gathering at a press reception in Enniscorthy Castle, which was attended by County Wexford Chamber President Brendan Crowley.

The ambassador said he was keen to revive links between Wexford and Normandy, as Ireland marked the 225th anniversary of 1798. Now, a new chapter for Ireland and France has opened up post-Brexit. “France is Ireland’s closest EU neighbour,” he said, adding that this relationship makes a difference when it comes to trade routes. In particular, he referenced Rosslare Europort and its shipping links with ports in France.

Monsieur Guérend later joined historians in a conversation on the ‘The Ideals of Revolution: Liberté, Égalité, Fraternitéhow the French Revolution impacted Irish Rebellion’.

The event took place at the Presentation Arts Centre and was organised as part of the overall programme of events making the 225th anniversary of the 1798 Rebellion.

CHAMBER EVENTS

Strategic Plan to guide Chamber activities in 2023-2025

On Monday, April 24, County Wexford Chamber launched its Strategic Plan 2023-2025 in Wexford Arts Centre.

The Strategic Plan outlines the vision, values, and purpose of the Chamber along with five key strategic objectives to guide the organisation’s activities and actions over the next three years.

These objectives, which are backed up by 18 actions in an associated business plan, will see the Chamber promote sustainability in business and the wider community, represent and grow its membership, advance economic development in County Wexford; encourage tourism, culture and the nighttime economy; and support workforce development and education initiatives in County Wexford.

SUSTAINABLE PROSPERITY FOR ALL

At the launch, which was attended by key stakeholders and Chamber members, Brendan Crowley, president of County Wexford Chamber, explained that the Chamber’s overall vision is Sustainable Prosperity for All. “That entails helping to develop an economy that gives people a good quality of life whilst also taking care of the environment.”

He also outlined how the Chamber, as the largest business group in County Wexford, represents 320 businesses and 20,000 employees in the county. “That gives the Chamber a voice,” he said. Amongst other issues, the Chamber uses its voice to “lobby for infrastructure that can support growth”.

CENTRE OF BUSINESS EXCELLENCE

Emma Dunphy, CEO of County Wexford Chamber, said that County Wexford Chamber had grown considerably in the past two years. “At the end of 2025, we want to know that, through delivering on every aspect of this Plan, we will have initiated and influenced change that will have positively adjusted the conditions for business and the environment in which our members operate. We want to have increased our membership so that every business sector and companies of all sizes can benefit from the collaborative benefits that membership offers. We want to have played an active role in enhancing County Wexford as a centre of business excellence. And we want to work to empower and facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship in County Wexford.”

EXTENSIVE CONSULTATION

The Strategic Plan was informed by the results of an extensive consultation process with Chamber members and key stakeholders both within the county and the wider South East region. The planning and consultation process was undertaken with the assistance of Board Excellence, a leading provider of services in Ireland, the UK and internationally, designed to support and enable high-performance boards that add significant value and represent a key driver of an organisation’s performance.

Successful Breakfast Briefing with Finance

Minister County Wexford Chamber hosted a Breakfast Briefing with Finance Minister Michael McGrath TD at the Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey, in June.

The event was kindly sponsored by Nolan Transport, and attended by businesspeople from across the county, local Oireachtas members and county councillors.

Welcoming the Minister, County Wexford Chamber President Brendan Crowley highlighted the need for optimum infrastructure in the county. “This includes the need to complete the M11 from Oylegate to Rosslare Europort, the need for a third-level campus in Wexford, and the need to retain talent to fuel enterprise in County Wexford.”

IMPORTANCE OF SMES

Minister McGrath gave an overview of current economic trends and issues, acknowledging the importance of foreign direct investment and SMEs in Co Wexford. “The IDA has 25 clients in County Wexford,” he said, highlighting the role of businesses, ranging from manufacturing to agrifood, technology, financial services and family businesses in creating a wide-ranging local economy.

The development of Rosslare Europort was also noted, along with the expectation that, in 2030, Ireland will be a net exporter of energy. Overall, the Minister said the economic outlook is favourable, adding that there was a need for Government to be conscious of the impact of costs on business of certain measures, such as the extra public holiday, sick pay, and auto enrolment in pension schemes.

STRATEGIC INVESTMENT

The minister highlighted the need to reduce inflation, address labour shortages, provide for Ireland’s aging population, reform the planning system, and said the Government will work to reduce the costs people are facing. “The government is looking at ways to increase the capital investment programme,” he said, adding that surpluses generated due to corporate tax would be used for strategic investment.

County Wexford Chamber was delighted to host a public meeting at end-March for locals and business people to discuss the incoming benefits of the South East Greenway. The event, which took place in the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross, was attended by more than 60 people from all around the county. Guest speaker Jenny Beresford, Dungarvan & West Waterford Chamber CEO, outlined potential benefits to the Greenway. Jill Kelleher, South East Greenway Business Development Officer, gave an update on the progress of the Greenway. Over the coming months and years, the benefits to the town and region will become evidently clear. As this wonderful asset continues to develop, County Wexford Chamber is delighted to provide opportunities for people to come together in search of the answers and information they need.

Membership of County Wexford Chamber includes strategic networking opportunities. We hosted an event recently in the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross, facilitating businesspeople to make new contacts and to build on existing relationships.

Fire & Security Expo an information success

Park 100 Fire & Security and Darlex Risk Management hosted a very successful Fire & Security Open Day at their premises in Wexford in June.

Connect and Learn to Protect your Business and Customers was a free open-door event to raise awareness on how technology can be used to support your business and protect it from the threat of fire, crime, and anti-social behaviour. It was also an ideal opportunity to network with other Wexford businesses, with business people, crime prevention officers, and facilities managers in attendance from across the South East.

Industry experts were on hand to explain the latest advancements in fire safety and demonstrated AI-CCTV, biometric facial recognition, fire suppression systems, wireless fire alarms and cloud-based access control to name a few.

County Wexford Chamber works with members to promote their bespoke networking events. These events help businesses to share insights into the unique offerings of the host business and showcase their premises. In addition, they help to build relationships with other professionals in County Wexford in a relaxed atmosphere. For information, contact info@

“We were delighted and very grateful to partner with County Wexford Chamber on our first Business after Hours event showcasing our upgraded facilities,” said Elizabeth Whyte, Executive Director of Wexford Arts Centre. “The event allowed us to provide a taste of what we have on offer with participating artists including Kevin Lawlor Trio with guest performer Melanie O’Reilly.

New Monart solar farm to power entire Griffin Hotel Group

The Griffin Hotel Group, which includes Monart Destination Spa, the Ferrycarrig Hotel in Wexford and Hotel Kilkenny are set to be powered by the brand-new 10-acre Monart Solar Farm. Phase one of the solar farm has been completed and is now operational on the grounds of the adjacent multi-award-winning Monart Destination Spa.

A capital investment of €750 million sees the first phase complete. This consists of an array of ground-mounted solar panels with a 500-kilowatt peak. The second phase is currently in development planning with ESB Networks as this project is now part of ECP-2, the CRUs enduring connection policy in Ireland. This additional phase will see the rollout of a further 1-megawatt peak array. This will give the final Monart Solar Farm the capacity of 1.5-megawatt peak energy creation which will offset the energy demand for the three properties, Monart Destination Spa, Hotel Kilkenny and Ferrycarrig Hotel. It is the aim of the group to complete phase two of the Monart Solar Farm within the next 12 months.

Wildlife from around the world at Secret Valley Wildlife Park

Secret Valley Wildlife Park was first established in 2007 in Clonroche, Co. Wexford. It is currently the only licensed zoo operating in the south east of Ireland. The park is home to almost 40 different species of animals - ranging from small furries and reptiles (including a giant Sulcata tortoise named Toby) to monkeys, lemurs, and other exotic mammals such as meerkats, porcupines and capybaras!

Many of Secret Valley’s animal residents have been rescued, such as the four rhesus macaque monkeys who were once used for animal testing in laboratories. Secret Valley now offers these boys a loving and caring home where they can live out the rest of their days happy and free to exhibit more natural behaviours.

There are plenty of great opportunities offered within the park to get up close and personal with the animals, including taking part in animal handling sessions or feeding the goats, llamas, and alpacas. Visitors can join in on the daily interactive keeper talks to ask questions and brush up on their knowledge of some of the animal species at Secret Valley. A fantastic range of experiences are also available to book, where people can get even closer to some of our animals by having the chance to be a zoo keeper for a day, feeding the meerkats and porcupines, or giving a capybara a scratch behind the ear! Other fun activities include a quad train ride and adventure hunts around the park.

The on-site cafe restaurant, The Hungry Tortoise, offers a selection of teas, coffees and a range of delicious food including all-day breakfasts and weekend dinners. The cafe is open to the general public also, with no entrance to the park required

SouthEast Vegetables –fresh from the soil of the Sunny South East

In 1998, a group of young and passionate farmers in the region pooled their expertise and growing power to create SouthEast Vegetables.

The story of SouthEast Vegetables is one of hard work, long hours, dedication to the land, its people and crops and, ultimately, its customers and their consumers. When it comes to growing the highest quality fresh produce, SouthEast Vegetables has a unique natural competitive advantage positioned as it is in the heart of the fertile county of Wexford!

With a team consisting of over 60 staff and innovative Irish farmers and using best-in-class agronomy, crop science and farming techniques, SouthEast Vegetables is firmly focused on a future of improved crop health, increased biodiversity and reduced environmental impact. It uses natural-based agricultural solutions to deliver better crop yields and higher quality locally grown fresh vegetables to the benefit of all.

SouthEast Vegetables works closely with the Department of Agriculture, Food & Marine and are certified members of Bord Bia, Global Gap, Organic Trust and HACCP. Having these high standard accreditations helps the team to deliver its promise of producing amazing, tasty, and nutritious vegetables, “fresh from the soil of the sunny South East”.

Its ambition is to become Ireland’s leading regenerative farm, by adopting an agriculture system which puts more back into the environment and society than it takes out. The company is trialling Silicate, an Irish company that uses crushed concrete to help farmers sequester carbon on its land.

SUSTAINABILITY

Boost for solar grants to businesses

In July, the Government approved amendments to the existing Non-Domestic Microgeneration Scheme, operated by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), to extend supports to a wider range of businesses and non-domestic applicants. This will be done through tiered grant supports for solar PV – for installation sizes greater than 6 kWp up to 1,000 kWp (1 MW) capacity.

New funding ranges from €2,700 to €162,600 to support an even wider range of businesses to switch to solar. This will typically support 20-30% of the investment cost, reducing payback to as little as five years.

Variety of businesses

The new range of installation sizes will cover a significant variety of businesses, from small local shops up to large manufacturing facilities. It will also be available for public buildings, sports clubs, and community organisations. An installation size of 1000 kWp equates to approximately 2,500 solar PV panels, which could be accommodated on a large factory or warehouse rooftop.

The joint proposal brought forward by the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, and the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, will see funds provided by way of transfer from the allocation for the Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme

(TBESS); to allow for an expansion of the existing nondomestic Solar PV supports. The amended scheme will operate on an introductory basis to the end of 2023 following which it will be assessed and subject to the normal budgetary process into 2024/2025. SEAI will implement the necessary changes and will open for applications under the amended scheme guidelines in mid-July.

Decarbonise energy use

The Ministers and their officials have been working closely on potential policy interventions to help businesses decarbonise their energy use and reduce their costs. The updated scheme will complement the objectives of the TBESS, in providing a solution to manage the impact of high energy prices. It will also provide a solution to mitigate this price volatility, whilst at the same time empowering those businesses to also be able to reduce their own emissions and support the local electricity grid. The new scheme amendments allow for the expansion of grant supports for installation sizes up to 1,000 kWp capacity – significantly above the 6 kWp limit previously under the scheme. By making grants available to the maximum range of businesses as part of a pilot programme, this also facilitates the assessment of the full level of demand across industry for solar PV solutions. This will also provide valuable data, regarding a potential multi-annual support for SMEs.
