Official launch of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2024

After much anticipation, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2024 was officially launched in the National Opera House at the end of March. The Wexford Fleadh Executive Committee invited members of the public to attend a fun-filled night of music, entertainment and, above all, a celebration of traditional Irish culture. Special guests on the night included TV presenter Síle Seoige with music from the Blackwater Céilí Band. Wexford group Ceoltóirí na Sláine, a recently established traditional Irish music orchestra for young musicians, also performed on the night. It comprises 85 young musicians from different Comhaltas branches in Co. Wexford who come together in a non-competitive way to showcase their musical talents.

Representing County Wexford Chamber at this landmark event were CEO Paula Roche, President Lorcán Kinsella, and Events and Membership Co-Ordinator Pauline Doyle.

Pettitt’s SuperValu St Aidan’s scoops National SuperValu Store of the Year award

Pettitt’s SuperValu St Aidan’s in Wexford was recently crowned the National SuperValu Store of the Year for 2024.

The award was presented in February at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney, where Pettitt’s also achieved Best Large SuperValu Store of the Year.

The win was not a stroke of luck but a testament to the hard work and dedication put in by every member of the Pettitt’s team. The store’s recent revamp showcased their commitment to excellence, with significant improvements in various departments such as bakery, kitchen, cook-at-home, and floristry.

What sets Pettitt’s apart is also its deep-rooted ties to the local community. Partnerships with the Wexford senior hurling and football teams – and support for County Wexford Chamber’s initiatives - demonstrate their dedication beyond the aisles, fostering a sense of belonging and support.

Pettitt’s SuperValu St Aidan’s is leading the charge in sustainability. With a remarkable 60% reduction in CO2 emissions thanks to innovative initiatives like installing new refrigeration units and solar panels, they are setting an example for environmentally conscious retail practices.

Pettitt’s SuperValu owner Cormac Pettitt credited the win to the hard work and dedication of his 160-plus loyal employees, some of whom have been with the store for over two decades.

Holy Grail New Ross wins Bronze YesChef Takeaway Award

The Holy Grail, New Ross, has won a bronze YesChef award in the category Indian Takeaway of the Year.

The award ceremony was held in February at the Tullamore Court Hotel, with the popular Indian restaurant and takeaway up against food businesses from all over the country.

The YesChef Awards recognises talent across a wide range of categories from Burgers and Cafes to Street Food and Sustainability Awards.

“Thank you everyone for your continued support and a big hug to the team behind for the achievement,” said Shijo Bhaskaran, The Holy Grail, New Ross, in a Facebook post celebrating the win.

Shane Smith, Managing Director of NI Media that runs the awards commended the nominees, saying their presence at the awards ceremony reflected “your commitment to your industry and more so to your own standards within your business. Being a finalist stands testament to the demands of the palates of diners across the island”

KDA growth as it incorporates JM Carton Accountants, Bunclody

KDA, a leading firm in financial solutions, based in Gorey, has announced its incorporation of JM Carton Accountants, Bunclody. The transition follows the passing of Sean Carton, who founded the accountancy practice in 1983.

The experienced team at JM Carton Accountants will integrate into KDA, with the Bunclody office remaining open for business. This ensures a smooth transition for existing clients while introducing a wealth of expertise and knowledge to the KDA family.

James Doyle and Frank Kelly, Managing Partners at KDA, expressed their firm’s gratitude for the opportunity to build upon the legacy of JM Carton Accountants. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the Carton family and the entire team at JM Carton Accountants during this challenging time. Sean was a respected figure in financial circles and his beloved local community in Bunclody, and we are honoured to continue his legacy of excellence in financial services.”

KDA is committed to upholding the high standards set by Sean and his team. Clients can expect a seamless transition with the same level of dedication and personalised service characteristic of Sean. “JM Carton Accountants has a diverse range of clients, and we are in touch with them to introduce ourselves and assure them that Sean’s legacy of care and commitment will be continued by KDA.”

Killowen Farm wins Local Business category at Irish Times Business Awards

Greenvalley Farms Ltd, known as Killowen Farm, was named as the inaugural winner of the Local Business category at the Irish Times Business Awards in February.

Accepting the award, which was sponsored by Bank of Ireland, Nicholas Dunne said that every day produces a new “phenomenal opportunity” for Killowen Farm.

The purpose of the Awards, which are run in association with Bank of Ireland, is to mark excellence and outstanding achievement in Irish business.

Greenvalley Farms is the only single origin dairy yoghurt producer in Ireland. Situated at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains in Co Wexford, Killowen Farm has been in the Dunne family for 200 years.

Owners Nicholas and Judith Dunne took over the business about 20 years ago and moved the yoghurt production to their own dairy farm in Enniscorthy. In 2022, the business unveiled a €4 million expansion that added 25 new jobs and enabled it to grow its cream cheese production.

A breakthrough deal with Irish food group Ornua opened the door for the business to export to Europe, and Killowen now ships goods to many international markets including Dubai, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. The company has consistently achieved organic sales of about 10 per cent a year.

PARTNERSHIP EVENTS

Strategic partnerships with benefits for members

County Wexford Chamber works with members to promote their bespoke networking events. These events help businesses to share insights into the unique offerings of the host business and showcase their premises. In addition, they help to build relationships with other professionals in County Wexford in a relaxed atmosphere.

We have recently co-hosted events in Enniscorthy and Gorey, where industry experts shared insights and knowledge with the business community.

At the J Donohoe BMW After-Hours Networking and Electric Vehicle Expo in Enniscorthy, attendees enjoyed vehicle test drives and heard about developments in the motor industry and electric vehicles from in-house experts and expert speakers.

Meanwhile, Roban Financial, Zurich, and KDA hosted a timely B2B Information Breakfast in Gorey on pensions auto-enrolment. Held in the Ashdown Park Hotel, the event helped employers to understand the intricacies and impact of pensions auto-enrolment on their businesses.

Create a winning culture with Wellbeing programme

In the face of mounting difficulties with recruiting and retaining staff, Irish businesses are putting a fresh focus on company culture and workplace wellbeing as a means of maintaining a healthy, happy, and productive workforce.

In 2023, County Wexford Chamber Skillnet invited 14 Wexford-based companies to enrol in its ‘How to Create a Wellbeing Strategy, Plan and Policy’ programme, supported by the Network.

“The programme ran from February to June 2023,” says Calodagh McCumiskey, chief executive of Spiritual Earth and the lead trainer on the programme.

Online group sessions introduced the concept of wellbeing in terms of individuals and organisations. In-person sessions addressed the unique challenges within the companies to wellbeing and team engagement. “The final stage was a half-day event that allowed participants to come together to share their learnings and how the programme benefited them.”

The central plank of the programme is the ‘12 Pillars of Wellbeing’. These are areas which can be either a source of strength or stress to an individual, ranging from physical and mental wellbeing, to emotional, social, financial, creative, and spiritual wellbeing. The pillars include other drivers of an individual’s sense of wellbeing, such as their use of digital technology, social life, work, environment, relationships, and their unique sense of purpose.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK

Feedback from the companies that took part in the scheme was overwhelmingly positive. “Since Covid, a lot of people have been struggling in many ways. The programme made us more aware of certain issues and we’re now in the process of implementing a system to facilitate regular feedback from managers to staff,” says Customs Supervisor Tara O’Connor, Roche Freight, a global provider of transportation and logistics services.

Lorraine Neville, Operations Manager with Home Instead, a leading provider of private home care services, said: “I felt the programme gave me a good understanding of how to improve our wellbeing culture and my team loved the in-house sessions too. I have even recommended the programme to the manager of our national office.”

Therese O’Connor, Network Manager of County Wexford Chamber Skillnet, believes that providing training to organisations to develop a comprehensive wellbeing strategy “is key to cultivating a thriving and resilient workforce”.

“This training programme promotes organisations to foster a culture that prioritises employee wellbeing, leading to increased productivity, reduced burnout, and a more compassionate and supportive work environment,” she adds.

Collaboration, innovation, and community are at the heart of new Chamber CEO’s plans

In March, County Wexford Chamber appointed Paula Roche as its new CEO. Here, Paula shares her thoughts on how the Chamber can help champion other businesses and foster a thriving business ecosystem in the region

Q. Congratulations on your new role as CEO of County Wexford Chamber! Can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to take on this position?

A. Thank you, I’m delighted to be on board. I started my career in Dublin, working in finance for an Italian bank and later a Dutch reinsurance company. At the reinsurance company, I worked my way up from an administrator role to managerial positions over nine years. One of my big achievements there was establishing a treasury function that allowed customers to invest in fixed-term cash deposits. I got 25 banks on the panel, increasing the deposit book value by a whopping 900%.

That was also where I got my introduction to all things change, a path I decided to focus on full-time, managing projects and working to improve how businesses operate. I did this in Aviva for a year before an opportunity arose in Equifax in Wexford. After 13 years in Dublin, I jumped at the chance to move home to Wexford and join an organisation I saw great potential with. What initially started as leading change in one business area, evolved into leading transformation programmes across the EU

and leading the highly regulated area of Operations. I later transitioned into the role of Managing Director of the Consumer Solutions division.

Throughout my career journey in finance, data, and technology, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside supportive organisations and influential leaders who have certainly enriched my professional growth. As I contemplated my next step, I was drawn to a role that would allow me to embrace diverse responsibilities spanning various disciplines, leading transformative initiatives within the business, and contributing to a broader mission beyond mere financial achievements where I could better connect with the customer. The prospect of fulfilling these aspirations within County Wexford Chamber, while simultaneously championing other businesses and fostering a thriving business ecosystem in the region, really appealed to me.

Q. What do you see as the main priorities or goals for County Wexford Chamber under your leadership?

A. County Wexford Chamber is dedicated to promoting

INSIDE WEXFORD BUSINESS | PAGE 12

the economic and social development of Wexford, aiming to enhance our community as a great place to live, work, and do business. This gives me a lot of scope, but if I were to narrow it down to what I am currently focused on, I would say our priorities are:

• A review of our current operating model and services. Streamlining processes to boost efficiency is essential for our small team to effectively scale up and meet the needs of our members and stakeholders.

• Enhance the value proposition for our members and Corporate Partners. It is essential to ensure we are providing a service that meets our members needs. To achieve this, we will actively engage with our members, listen to their feedback, and identify requirements. By understanding our members‘ requirements, we can pinpoint areas where we can enhance the value exchange and better serve our community.

• Community development is a top priority. I am fortunate to step into this role at a time when there are numerous transformational projects underway in County Wexford. From the Rosslare Europort Masterplan, the South East Greenway and Town Centre First plan for New Ross, the construction of Tara Film Studios in Gorey, and the new IDA site in Enniscorthy, these projects and others hold immense potential for our community’s growth and prosperity. While there are established committees overseeing these projects, I am keen to offer support in any way possible.

Navigating these projects will undoubtedly make for a busy first year, but I’m confident that, with the support of my dedicated team, our supportive board of directors, and, of course, our invaluable members, we can make significant strides forward in achieving our strategic goals.

Q. Collaboration is key in fostering economic growth. How do you envision working with other organisations and stakeholders to promote the interests of County Wexford businesses?

A. There are many organisations such as the Local Enterprise Office, Wexford Enterprise Centre, Visit Wexford, Wexford Local Development, Wexford County Council, and many others, that already demonstrate remarkable efforts in fostering economic growth. Rather than reinventing the wheel, I am keen to collaborate with these established entities, and perhaps identify any potential gaps where the Chamber can offer support. I believe that by formalising our collaboration and working together, we can establish a support framework that will lead to collective success.

experience. I am also committed to revitalising our social media channels to increase engagement and interaction within our community, ensuring members remain at the forefront of relevant discussions.

In addition to enhancing our digital presence online, I am actively exploring opportunities to optimise processes through integration of technology-led solutions. For example, there are ways to improve the very valuable Shop Local Voucher scheme, which is a huge boost to the business community, with over €2 million sold since 2020. By reducing overheads and enhancing the customer experience, we can further enhance the scheme’s effectiveness and impact.

Q. Workforce development is vital for economic prosperity. What initiatives do you plan to introduce to support skill development and talent retention in County Wexford?

A. We recognise that talent retention is crucial for the sustained economic prosperity of County Wexford. In addition to the valuable resources provided by County Wexford Chamber Skillnet, we are committed to supporting your business in implementing initiatives that not only enhance skill development but also cultivate a supportive and rewarding workplace environment. By continuing to offer our services and collaborating with other professional educational bodies in Co Wexford and the wider country, we aim to offer professional development opportunities, bootcamps, and initiatives to promote work-life balance. Ultimately, we aspire to retain top talent within County Wexford and ensure the continued success of local businesses.

Q. Lastly, what message would you like to convey to the business community in County Wexford as you embark on this new journey as CEO of the Chamber?

A. I would like to say a huge thank you for the support and kindness the community of Wexford has shown me. It has been a pleasure connecting with those I’ve had the privilege to meet, learning about your journeys of growth and success. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to engage with all our members, to understand your needs better, and explore how we can collectively support, promote, and advocate for your businesses.

Q. How do you plan to leverage technology and innovation to enhance the Chamber’s services and offerings?

A. Given my background in digital transformation, I’m eager to leverage technology to enhance our online presence. Firstly, I aim to elevate our online presence with a revamp of our website that not only serves as a hub of information but also provides features to enhance user

Enniscorthy & District Chamber Joins County Wexford Chamber

County Wexford Chamber is excited to announce the integration of Enniscorthy & District Chamber, with the negotiation process having been chaired by Lorcan Kinsella, President of the County Wexford Chamber. This significant step heralds a new chapter for both chambers, enhancing support, expanding networking opportunities, and strengthening advocacy for businesses throughout County Wexford.

The unanimous decision by the members of Enniscorthy & District Chamber on March 11th, 2024, demonstrates a shared vision and dedication to fostering a vibrant business environment across County Wexford. By coming together, the two chambers unite the four pivotal districts of New Ross, Wexford, Gorey, and Enniscorthy, forming a unified force for economic development and improved services for members.

PROMISING FUTURE FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

“The inclusion of the Enniscorthy & District Chamber marks a significant milestone for our community and signals a promising future for local businesses,” said Lorcan Kinsella. “I am honoured to have chaired the negotiations leading to this successful outcome, underscoring our collective ambition to enhance and unify the business landscape across County Wexford.”

With Enniscorthy & District Chamber now part of County Wexford Chamber, this combined effort will continue under the County Wexford Chamber banner. The focus will be on delivering expanded innovative support, advocacy, and services to a broader membership base.

launches Local and EU Election Manifestos

Chambers Ireland, the voice of business in Ireland, launched its two Manifestos for the Local and European Elections, which are taking place in June.

The largest Irish business network is calling for Local Government and MEP candidates to step up and be ambitious with their vision for the long-term growth and prosperity of Ireland.

Ireland’s competitiveness is being challenged by housing shortages, energy costs, skills gaps and the failure of the planning system to adequately facilitate the development of key infrastructure. According to Chambers Ireland, MEPs and Councillors need long-term views on how to maximise the opportunities on our doorstep and defend against challenges that will arise over the coming years. This requires proactive, visionary and ambitious representatives that will take accountability and ensure delivery of the infrastructure we need for the future.

NEED FOR AMBITIOUS VISION FOR IRELAND

Speaking at the launch, Chambers Ireland’s Chief Executive, Ian Talbot, said: “Chambers Ireland and the Chamber network across the country are calling on candidates in the Local and EU Elections to be ambitious in their vision for Ireland. National development in housing, energy, transport, and water and grid infrastructure has been too slow and the decades of neglect has created crucial deficits that are hindering our economic development.

“Our towns and cities across the country need more support to reach their potential. Fostering thriving and

vibrant communities is good for all. For residents, it creates economic opportunities, enhances social cohesion, improves their quality of life and leads to a greater sense of belonging and pride of place. While for businesses, it attracts visitors and investment, and encourages innovation and growth.

“This is why we need proactive elected representatives at all levels that understand the challenges facing Ireland and have the ambition to catalyse radical social, economic and environmental change for our future prosperity. In doing so, they will also be helping us meet our national obligations under the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.”

LOCAL AUTHORITY

At a Local Authority level, Chambers Ireland calls on Councillor candidates to:

• Foster safe, thriving and inclusive towns and cities that are attractive places for our growing population to live, work, visit and invest.

• Build more homes, and streamline and support the planning system to ensure essential infrastructure development can progress.

• Take action to maximise the opportunities associated with the green transition in relation to green energy and sustainable transport.

EUROPEAN ELECTION MANIFESTO

At an EU level, Chambers Ireland calls on the MEP candidates to:

• Deliver a robust EU Industrial Strategy for Renewable Energy.

• Ensure a globally competitive Europe that facilities trade across the world.

• Reduce the regulatory burden facing businesses.

• Ensure EU investment is identified and rolled out across the country for vital regional development.

• Eradicate obstacles facing the single market and the free movement of goods, capital, people and services.

• Develop skills strategies for growth in green and digital technology sectors.

Fáilte Ireland focuses on sustainable tourism development in 2024 SUSTAINABILITY

Fáilte Ireland has unveiled its ambitious plans to drive sustainable tourism development across Ireland and support the decarbonisation of tourism businesses. The National Tourism Development Authority unveiled its 2024 plans at a special virtual event for the tourism industry, opened by Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin TD, and watched by over 1,500 tourism operators, providers, and employers from across the sector.

Central to the plans is a new Climate Action Programme, developed in consultation with tourism businesses, which includes the appointment of a dedicated advisor to businesses to help navigate every step of the climate action journey.

To accelerate the decarbonisation of the tourism sector in line with national carbon emissions reduction targets, Minister Catherine Martin announced that Fáilte Ireland has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). This partnership will ensure tourism businesses can easily access the financial supports available to reduce carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency and adopt renewable technologies.

To continue to motivate visitors to take a domestic break in Ireland and encourage overseas visitors to choose Ireland as a destination, Fáilte Ireland updated the industry on its future potential pipeline of up to 150 new or upgraded tourism projects that may be developed across its four regional brands. The regional brands are: the Wild Atlantic Way, Dublin, Ireland’s Ancient East, and Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.

Eight of these new visitor attractions and experiences are due to open in 2024 including Queen Maeve Square in Co. Sligo; a new water sports facility in Curracloe, Co. Wexford; Dublin Castle Records Tower in Dublin city centre; and Connaught Harbour in Portumna, Co. Galway.

Fáilte Ireland also presented its latest research on the tourism industry’s expectations for 2024. Headline findings showed that most tourism businesses are predicting 2024 will be better than 2023, with 44% of respondents expecting an increase in visitors this year and 21% expecting fewer visitors.

However, businesses are still reporting concerns about rising operational costs in 2024 with half of businesses saying the minimum wage increase will have a ‘significant’ impact on their payroll costs.

GOLF CLASSIC Chamber Golf Classic a sunny success

The sun shone on County Wexford Chamber’s Annual Golf Classic at Enniscorthy Golf Club on Friday, September 29, 2023.

The Sensible Safety team from Enniscorthy finished the day in top position, with team members Paddy Fitzpatrick, Sean Sexton, Frankie Morrissey, and Shane Dunphy representing County Wexford in the Chambers Ireland competition in October.

Sponsored by J Donohoe BMW, the golf classic attracted teams from across the county.

In a closely contested competition, the South East Vegetables Hotshots team came in second place, followed by Property

Claims Loss Assessors in third place. Sensible Safety’s Shane Dunphy achieved the longest drive amongst the men and Liz Browne from Killowen Farm out-distanced the pack in the ladies’ longest drive. Frankie Morrissey from Sensible Safety won the ‘nearest the pin’ competition.

A day like this is not possible without the support of the business community, and County Wexford Chamber thanks our main sponsor, J Donohoe BMW, along with other sponsors such as Pettitt’s SuperValu Wexford, Home Instead Wexford, Bodibro, Bord na Móna, Clayton Whites Hotel, Eset Ireland, Glen Fuels, Harte Outdoor Lighting, HBS Connect, Irish Country Meats, Jones Business Systems, John A Sinnott Solicitors, K&K Windows, Sheil Kinnear Accountants, Park 100, The IT Department, and Wexford Bus.
