Hello Members!
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you, our members, as I accept the honourable role of President of County Wexford Chamber. Like many of you, I am an entrepreneur, business owner and, also, a commercial solicitor. I have set up, sold, and merged businesses for myself and others. So, I have a deep understanding of the complexities – heartaches and joys - of running and being in business, whether you are at start-up, growth, or succession planning phase.
DIALOGUE AT ALL LEVELS

As President, I have begun meeting our members at the local ‘Chapter’ meetings. Each region – Enniscorthy, Gorey, New Ross, and Wexford town – has its own district Chapter. The Chapter’s function is to provide a direct link for dialogue between businesses at the grassroots level and the Chamber’s board. This ensures that every level of the Chamber, from members to staff, CEO, and directors are aware of issues impacting our community that either need attention or promotion. These Chapter meetings and feedback from our Development Officers in each district help shape our policies and direction. The theme for my Chamber Presidency is to develop and drive a ‘bottom up’ approach.
SHOP LOCAL GIFT CARD
The launch of the Shop Local Gift Card, which you will see covered in this issue, is a big step forward for the Chamber. I encourage both members and employers to engage in this innovative scheme all year round. What better way than to gift family, friends, or employees with an easy opportunity to “shop local” and support our local retailers and businesses. I would like to extend a “welcome” to all our recent new members and a “thank you” to all our long-standing members. I am always available to hear ideas and discuss or share opportunities, along with our CEO, Paula Roche, and our hardworking team. Contact us on info@countywexfordchamber.ie.
STRONGER, MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Working as a united Wexford (with the integration of Enniscorthy), we now have a powerful platform for collaboration, innovation, and lobbying for supports. In October, we signed a significant agreement with Wexford County Council to ensure that we can continue to do this work on behalf of our members.
Together, we will continue to build a stronger, more sustainable future for businesses in Wexford, and I invite each and every one of you to be a part of this exciting journey.
Yours sincerely,
Conor Robinson President, County Wexford Chamber
CORPORATE PARTNERS 2024

REFLECTION
As I look back on my first eight months with County Wexford Chamber, I’m both proud and energised by the strides we’ve made together to support our vibrant business community. This period has been a mix of significant events, collaborative initiatives, and planning for the future - all with the goal of strengthening the economic landscape of County Wexford. Here’s a snapshot of the progress we’ve made and a preview of what’s to come.
1. Celebrating Business Excellence at the County Wexford Business Awards
A highlight this year was the County Wexford Business Awards in May, where we celebrated 19 outstanding winners from various industries, each demonstrating a commitment to excellence. The event showcased the strength and diversity of our local business landscape. Thank you to everyone who nominated, our dedicated judges, and all who attended.
2. Inspiring Careers in Renewable Energy
In partnership with Wind Energy Ireland, we hosted a career fair to encourage students to explore opportunities in renewable energy. With the energy transition gaining global importance, the event highlighted the growing potential in wind energy, especially in County Wexford, which is well-positioned to support Ireland’s renewable goals. As this sector evolves, we want to ensure young talent is aware of the exciting roles available.
3. Launching Our Shop Local Gift Card - Supporting Local Businesses
This year, we launched the County Wexford Shop Local Gift Card, marking a key step in our digitisation journey. With over 160 businesses now participating, the card makes it easy for us all to support local shops and services, helping sustain jobs and strengthen our community. This initiative reflects our commitment to County Wexford’s economic prosperity, and we encourage everyone to join in supporting our local economy.
4. Expanding Our Event Calendar and Looking Ahead to 2025
You may have noticed more events on the County Wexford Chamber calendar. Designed to connect, educate, and empower our members, these events will continue to expand in 2025. From networking to skill-building workshops and industry-specific sessions, our lineup aims to meet the needs of our diverse business community. Participating is a great way to stay informed, build connections, and share insights.
5. Lobbying for Wexford Businesses on the European Stage
In November, I joined a delegation in Brussels to lobby on behalf of County Wexford businesses at the EU level, focusing on key issues such as competitiveness, energy, skills, and economic affairs - vital to our region’s business climate. We also successfully advocated, alongside other South East chambers, for expanded veterinary courses at South East Technological University (SETU) to address regional skill gaps. Through our partnership with Chambers Ireland, we produce lobbying documents each year to represent your voice. If there are issues needing more focus, please reach out.
A Focus on Digitisation for Greater Efficiency and Member Support
One of my priorities has been digitising Chamber operations to streamline processes and free up our team’s capacity. This allows our Development Officers (DOs) to spend more time directly supporting members. With

Chamber representation in each of County Wexford’s four districts, we encourage you to reach out to your local DO for support, insights, or guidance. This approach enables us to provide tailored, hands-on assistance and better respond to the needs of local businesses.
Closing Thoughts
As we wrap up the year and look ahead to 2025, I’m excited by the momentum we’ve built. From celebrating local business success and advocating for our members internationally, to launching impactful initiatives and expanding our event calendar, it’s been a promising start. Thank you to our members, partners, and the wider County Wexford community for your support and collaboration. It’s a privilege to work with such dedicated individuals, and I look forward to all we’ll achieve together in the year ahead.

BD Enniscorthy – impacting positively on global health

Gerard Reynolds, Director of Operations at BD Enniscorthy, tells Inside Wexford Business how the global medical devices company exemplifies excellence in output, leadership, talent, and community engagement
Q. BD has a longstanding history in County Wexford, including its earlier days as ClearStream Technologies and Bard. Could you share an overview of BD’s journey and how the company has evolved into what it is today?
A. BD (Becton Dickinson) Enniscorthy was established in 1995. Since then, it has evolved from a small business with 25 associates making coronary catheters to a thriving facility with over 400 employees, producing innovative products for vascular intervention and dialysis care.
In 1995, the business was established, initially as a subsidiary of Angiodynamics, manufacturing devices for coronary applications.
In 2000, there was a local management buyout of the business to form ClearStream Technologies. The ClearStream team pivoted the business from coronary technology to focus on medical devices for peripheral vascular applications.
In 2014, CR Bard acquired the business and continued the investment in Enniscorthy to further increase the portfolio. Then, in 2018, BD acquired CR Bard under the umbrella of the BD Interventional segment.
BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world, with over 70 manufacturing facilities worldwide employing over 70,000 associates helping to advance the world of health by improving medical discovery, diagnostics and the delivery of care. BD Enniscorthy stands out as one of the largest manufacturing facilities in Wexford, developing critical care solutions that significantly impact global health.
Q. You’ve been with BD through various stages of growth and transformation. Describe your journey with the company, and which aspects of your role are you most passionate about?
A. I’ve been with the business over 12 years and in my current role as Director of Operations for over five years. BD has enabled me to develop a strong career path in manufacturing operations, engineering and supply chain competencies. Additionally, I have visited plants in the US and Mexico to collaborate and work on projects with colleagues and expand my MedTech Operational knowledge on a global scale. This experience has enabled me to take a senior leadership role in Ireland and guide the operational elements of our business in Enniscorthy over the past five years.
What makes BD Enniscorthy successful is the depth and strength of leadership, not just in this facility, but globally, at all levels within the business. It has been an honour to see the development of associates into leadership roles across the Enniscorthy site and at other BD sites worldwide.
Q. As a business that serves clients and patients globally, how does the Wexford site fit into BD’s overall strategy? What unique advantages has the Wexford location offered the company?
A. Wexford county, with its ‘sunny South East’ moniker, access to beautiful beaches and other fantastic facilities makes it a very attractive place to live, and nurture one’s wellbeing. As a result, Wexford and the surrounding
counties have become a desired hub for a talented workforce. BD Enniscorthy has welcomed the access we have to top talent which has secured for us an exceptional team on site. For over 30 years, the talent of our people has been at the heart of everything we do as we continue to advance the world of health, technology and innovation.
BD values local talent and our collaboration with institutions like South East Technological University (SETU), as we support the development of associates’ skills that contribute to their success. Additionally, BD’s commitment to excellence is reflected in its robust team and advanced technologies that drive continued medical progress.
As BD continues to innovate, BD Enniscorthy will continue to support the wider global business shaping the future of healthcare and at the same time regional development.
Q. BD is a major employer in County Wexford and has strong ties to the community. How does BD engage with and support the local community, and are there any recent initiatives or partnerships that stand out?
A. BD Enniscorthy actively engages with the local community, making a positive impact in education and local charity initiatives to help promote their great work and worthy causes. Through this process, associates are involved in several fund-raising initiatives and organised events and associates’ donations are matched by BD. Recent beneficiaries have been Slaney Search and Rescue, St Senan’s School, and Wexford Women’s Refuge with our collective contribution reaching nearly €70,000. This year, we are raising funds for Wexford Hospice Homecare.
We also engage with local schools to help young people develop skills in areas such as financial literacy and technology. In recent years, we have worked with schools through the Junior Achievement programme. Additionally, we invite Transition Year students from local schools to our facilities to encourage their interest in medical technology. As part of the day, BD associates share stories about their education and career paths and students are invited to ask questions. These experiences help students connect the dots between STEM and medical technology, research, and engineering.

next generation of innovators in healthcare.
Q. Sustainability is becoming increasingly essential in healthcare. How is BD working toward its sustainability goals, and are there any specific environmental initiatives being implemented at the Wexford site?
A. BD are passionate about sustainability and achieving goals set by the business are important to us too.
An example of this is our choice of suppliers. BD Enniscorthy uses electricity suppliers that provide 100% green energy. This decision enables a reduction of 578 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually when compared to the use of 100% fossil fuel for electricity generation.
Additionally, BD Enniscorthy installed 1,006 solar panels on the facilities roof that power two large heat pumps. Combined, these have substantially reduced the use of our kerosene boilers for heating water and reduced our kerosene usage from 74,000 litres per year to 18,000 litres per year, eliminating 137 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Beyond that, our commitment to Continuous Improvement and BD Excellence (business performance system) ensures we are focused on our goals to reduce waste in all areas of our manufacturing.
Q. As a global leader in medical technology, BD is often at the forefront of industry innovation. What areas of medical device development are you most excited about, and how does BD stay ahead of industry advancements?
A. As advanced technology continues to redefine the healthcare industry, there is a tremendous opportunity for innovation, particularly as new material science, digital and manufacturing systems evolve. At BD, we are accelerating the integration of AI, robotics, and other technologies in this new transformational era of healthcare and our global team is at the forefront, developing solutions that make healthcare simpler, more connected, and accessible.

At BD Enniscorthy, we are proud of the opportunity we have to engage with local students and provide them with memorable experiences to help develop an interest in STEM and possibly, the

The survey, based on insights from 42,000 businesses across 27 countries, reveals that Europe’s entrepreneurs are bracing for another challenging year. High labour costs, persistent

skills shortages, and a growing regulatory burden are cited as the primary threats to Europe’s already fragile competitive edge.
Chambers Ireland Chief Executive, Ian Talbot, said: “Irish businesses are approaching 2025 with optimism but despite an increase in business confidence compared to last year, significant challenges remain. High labour costs and an evergrowing regulatory burden continue to be major obstacles and expectations for export sales have deteriorated.
“The new European Commission and co-legislators must focus on encouraging Irish businesses to invest, employ, innovate, and pursue opportunities within the single market and globally.”

County Wexford Chamber Skillnet is ‘Going Green’ and Set to Launch Exciting New Training Initiatives
County Wexford Chamber Skillnet is a multi-sector business support network for companies of all sizes in Wexford and the Southeast Region. The network’s mission is to “support the growth of local businesses and the development of the region, through subsidised talent development programmes that are tailored to the needs of the local workforce”.
Collaborating with industry, the network designs, develops, and delivers subsidised, bespoke and flexible upskilling courses to meet the ongoing needs of businesses. It specialises in facilitating and subsidising training in the areas of management development, leadership, continuous improvement; lean skills; digital skills and AI, hospitality, health care, and many more across all levels.

Following industry and regional trends, County Wexford Chamber Skillnet has formed collaborative partnerships with organisational bodies, training providers and third level institutions including SETU, UCD Professional Academy, Trinity College Dublin, and the Irish Exporters Association, to name but a few, as well as a range of industries across Wexford town and county.
IMPROVE GREEN PRACTICES
Acutely aware that social responsibility will take centre stage in 2025, County Wexford Chamber Skillnet and Green Tech Skillnet have collaborated to deliver new cutting-edge sustainability initiatives to help local businesses improve their green practices. The Going Green sustainability platformGoingGreen.ie – which goes live soon, will be a key resource for businesses, offering a free Sustainability Maturity Self-

Assessment to evaluate current practices across various metrics.
In addition, County Wexford Chamber Skillnet is rolling out a “Sustainability and ESG for Business Success programme”. Delivered by sustainability experts, this bespoke programme consists of face-to-face group sessions complemented by one-on-one support, tailored to individual companies with limited sustainability knowledge over a period of six months. The programme will see business owners, managers and their teams engage in actionable tasks to progress along a sustainability roadmap, focusing on identifying and addressing capability gaps essential for achieving their sustainability goals.

“Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword, it is quickly becoming a necessity and an integral aspect of every business strategy,” said Aisling O’Connor, Network Manager, County Wexford Chamber Skillnet. “The collaboration between County Wexford Chamber Skillnet and Green Tech Skillnet will significantly support organisations in their sustainability efforts and develop necessary skills within their workforce.
“So far in 2024, this Network has partnered with over 280 companies delivering almost 6,000 training days. We are actively planning our 2025 schedule, which will introduce additional sustainability courses and new programmes that align with business needs, regional priorities, and industry trends.”

County Wexford Chamber Skillnet is promoted by County Wexford Chamber of Commerce. Membership of the network is open to private enterprises.

GOLF CLASSIC Chamber Golf Classic shines in September sun
Sensible Safety took first prize at County Wexford Chamber’s Annual Golf Classic, held in September at Enniscorthy Golf Club. The Enniscorthy team went on to represent the Chamber at the prestigious Chambers Ireland All Ireland Chamber Champions event at the K Club in Co. Kildare in October.
The Kehoe & Associates team claimed second place, while J Donohoe BMW rounded out the top three in what was a tightly contested competition.
AIB’s Ger Smith earned individual honours with the men’s longest drive, while Catherine Lawless from Fresh Today took the women’s title for longest drive. John Conroy won the ‘nearest the pin’ competition. In a great achievement, Sean

Nolan, from Reynaers Aluminium, secured a hole in one on the sixth green!
County Wexford Chamber CEO Paula Roche praised the event: “Our Golf Classic provided a wonderful platform for businesses to connect, unwind, and enjoy a day of friendly competition.”
The CEO also extended the Chamber’s gratitude to the event’s main sponsor, J Donohoe BMW, and acknowledged the support of numerous other sponsors, including Pettitt’s SuperValu, and Home Instead Wexford. The support of the local community was also reflected in the tee box and green sponsors, who were also recognised at the Golf Classic.

FRINGE GUIDE LAUNCH
Guide to Fringe Festival launched
County Wexford Chamber launched its Guide to the Wexford Fringe Festival 2024 in the T Morris Bar, Wexford, at the end of September.
Mayor of Wexford Cllr. George Lawlor officially launched the Guide, which provided essential information on events, ticket information, festival tours, historical attractions and much more. “The arts have a unique ability to bring us together and the Fringe Festival is a space where we celebrate what unites us,” said Cllr Lawlor, adding that the Fringe Guide highlights everything from book fairs to visual arts and more.
ECLECTIC MIX OF OVER 300 EVENTS
Wexford Fringe Festival was a vibrant festival of music, art, drama and culture, and has something for everybody, offering an eclectic mix of over 300 events over 15 days including cabaret, comedy, dance, film, theatre, photography, music, and visual art, many of which are free to attend.
County Wexford Chamber President Conor Robinson complimented the Chamber team for producing a Guide to one of Ireland’s largest Fringe events; highlighting that 10,000 copies were going to be distributed throughout the county.

Fleadh Cheoil 2024 a huge success
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2024 was a vibrant week for Wexford with over 600,000 visitors descending on the town over the space of eight days and over 350 events for spectators to look at and enjoy.
The stunning weather added to the atmosphere with locals and visitors alike enjoying the music and culture emanating from every street corner.
INTERNATIONAL APPEAL
The world’s finest traditional musicians from locations including Dubai, the United States, and England, joined finalists from across Ireland to compete in the All-Ireland Finals in traditional Irish instruments from bodhráns to boxes to fiddles and in dance, song, and storytelling. The AllIreland is a culmination of years of dedication, practice, and refinement of skills by competitors, and it is a distinct honour to qualify for the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. More than 5,000 people took part in over 200 competitions in Wexford during the week.

The Fleadh brought numerous economic benefits to the town with many local businesses noting a significant upturn in custom during the week.
TEAM EFFORT
The Fleadh could not have happened without the dedication of more than 1,000 volunteers who brought the event to life, with roles ranging from Street Ambassadors to the Green Team to venue stewarding available for those who so generously gave their time. Even more volunteers will be needed for 2025!
The Chairman of the Fleadh Executive Committee and Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, Eddie Taaffe, said “The 2024 Comhaltas Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann was a really successful event for Wexford. It took hundreds of people and thousands of hours to ensure events ran smoothly. I would like to thank all those involved in the preparation and response to the event. We look forward to making 2025 even better!”

Town Centre First Plans
Mick McCormack, Town Regeneration Officer, Wexford County Council, gives an overview of the Town Centre First Plans

The Town Centre First (TCF) policy aims to create town centres that function as viable, vibrant and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit while also functioning as the service, social, cultural and recreational hub for the local community. It’s government policy informed by data and best practice and delivered by local authorities in partnership with communities.
It’s about bringing life and vibrancy back into the heart of Wexford towns and villages and finding ways that we can achieve that objective. A core objective of TCF is that it is from the ground up, it is not top-down and TCF teams are at the core of this approach.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
We have seven TCF teams set up in Co. Wexford in Wexford town, Enniscorthy, New Ross, Courtown/Riverchapel, Bunclody, Taghmon, and Castlebridge within various schemes under the TCF umbrella. These town teams provide an opportunity for the various stakeholder groups and communities to provide ideas and insight into what they believe will make their town centres a better place to live, work, visit, play and do business. TCF teams typically have representatives from business, community, heritage, sporting, cultural, tourism groupings from that town along with a Garda rep on each Town Team. The team should reflect the makeup of the town and have a vision that reflects the needs of that community.
WEXFORD COUNTY COUNCIL
Each Town Team is chaired by a Councillor from the relevant municipal district and the relevant District Manager, along with the Town Regeneration Officer from Wexford County Council, also sit on the teams. The Town Regeneration Officer is a dedicated resource and works with other sections within Wexford County Council in developing strategies that reflect the needs and wants of the communities.
Wexford County Council has invested significantly in the regeneration of town centres through our own resources and our economic and community development programme. We have an ambitious programme which helps with some of the infrastructural deficits in our towns, we have taken the initiative with public realm projects and have been successful in attracting matching national funding to get these projects underway. Many of these national funding streams now put a strong focus on TCF and projects that help reenergise town centres and we will continue to apply for these funds and use our own resources as matching funding.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
TCF is about sustainable development, meaning development that is socially, economically, culturally, and environmentally truly viable and accessible for all now and into the future. We work in ensuring that all of works and projects are planned and carried out in a sustainable manner and ensure that UN sustainability goals are reflected in all our plans.
FUTURE
In Wexford, we are looking to bring vibrancy back into the heart of Wexford towns. Our towns have a lot to offer in terms of heritage, attractiveness, charm, retail choice, nighttime economy offerings. The raw ingredients are there. The Fleadh, amongst other international events, gave us the opportunity to showcase what Wexford towns have to offer and we hope to build on that in the coming years. We would love to see more town centre living and encourage people to support town centre businesses, thus ensuring Wexford Town centres are given every opportunity to flourish and reach their full potential.

Members of the Wexford Town Centre First Team (l-r): Sergeant David Ferriter; Paula Roche, CEO, County Wexford Chamber; Helen Corish; and Mick McCormack, Town Regeneration Officer, Wexford County Council.

Wexford’s first wind energy jobs and education fair a success
Over 450 students from secondary schools across Co Wexford, as well as Arklow and Carnew in Co Wicklow, attended Wexford’s first-ever wind energy job and education fair. Organised by Wind Energy Ireland and supported by County Wexford Chamber, the event was sponsored by SSE Renewables and took place in Gorey in September.
The fair brought together major industry employers, thirdlevel colleges, and training providers to showcase the range of opportunities in the wind energy sector. Students engaged with various interactive activities and demonstrations, learning about the diverse career paths available in both onshore and offshore wind energy.

WIND ENERGY SKILLS GAP
Work in Wind Wexford introduced attendees to a variety of careers within the wind industry, which faces a significant skills gap. There are thousands of jobs to be filled both now and in the future. Companies and educators at the fair offered advice to students on the steps they could take to pursue a career in wind energy.
Key exhibitors included industry leaders such as SSE, Siemens Gamesa, Enercon, Vestas, Nordex, the National Maritime College of Ireland. Iarnród Éireann [Rosslare Europort], SETU, WWETB, ASL Safety & Training, and Bord na Móna were also among the exhibitors.
