From the President Graduates, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and administration of County College of Morris (CCM), I congratulate you. During your years at CCM, I am confident that you learned to think more critically and creatively and that you are better equipped to communicate more effectively.

I am confident that the work you and our faculty engaged in together has provided you with the ability to champion nearly any challenge that presents itself to you. And, I am confident that your education at CCM will afford you many opportunities throughout your life. We cannot possibly know the many places life will take us, but we can strive to make our communities and the world better. Arriving at this point of your life likely required a significant amount of sacrifice, courage and the outright refusal to quit no matter what obstacles you faced. In the words of the great America poet Maya Angelou, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”

Know that the certificate or degree you receive today is designed to open doors. Think broadly, be open to possibilities and remember, above all, to leverage your time and talent for the benefit of others.

In our ever-changing world, you will likely find that your time will be in even greater demand, your knowledge will be sought by others and your ability to solve problems will be desired by many. Those who seek your counsel will do so because they know you have the ability. At such invitations, I hope you will consider the words of our 41st President, George H. W. Bush, who proclaimed, “No problem of human making is too great to be overcome by human ingenuity, human energy, and the untiring hope of the human spirit.” Cheerfully give your time and talents so others can realize a better life and you will know that the rewards of what you worked for in our classrooms and labs are even greater than what you might have expected.

THE MACE: The academic ceremonial mace is carried aloft and forward by the Grand Marshal in the academic procession. The mace incorporates the seal of the County College of Morris. The mace is constructed of precious metals and signifies protection of governmental, ecclesiastical or academic “authority.”

THE APPAREL: Today’s CCM graduates are the second group to enter in the procession and the last to depart. They wear the light gray gowns prescribed for the two-year associate degree or the one-year certificate. A maroon satin collar signifies honors achievement in an associate degree program. In addition, members of the honor societies, Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Beta Gamma, wear honor stoles, NJ STARS students wear maroon honor cords and EOF students wear Kente cloths.

Faculty and administration members enter in an order reflecting rank. Gowns — representing the bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree — may be either black or the authorized color of the degree granting institution.

AN AWARD-WINNING FACULTY Professor Venancio “Venny” Fuentes Named Top Professor in the Northeast Professor Venancio “Venny” Fuentes this academic year was recognized for his excellence in teaching with the 2018 Northeast Faculty Award from the Association of Community College Trustees.

Chair of the Department of Engineering Technologies and Engineering Science, Fuentes has assisted hundreds of college students during the course of his career. He also oversaw the development of the Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing program for high school students at CCM so they can earn college credit.

Fuentes is a Senior Member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), a distinction awarded to only 9 percent of the institute’s members. He also is a commissioner for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), serving as a lead evaluator of engineering programs accredited by ABET. Prior to coming to CCM, Fuentes worked for Sperry Electronics Systems on navigation systems for the Navy and then at Kearfott Guidance and Navigation where he worked on the space shuttle’s navigation system.

GRAND MARSHAL Professor Marielaine Mammon Marielaine Mammon is chairperson of the Music, Performing Arts and Music Technologies department. Mammon earned degrees from the College of New Jersey, Juilliard School of Music and Rutgers University. She has performed internationally, giving public recitals in Korea, China, and British Columbia and presented master classes throughout the U.S. She has been a soloist in major opera and concert halls including the War Memorial in Trenton and in New York City at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall. In the past 42 years, she has performed 30 major roles in opera, operetta and musicals. At CCM, Mammon serves as producer and director of opera, operetta and musical theatre for over 85 productions.

Honorary Degree

THE HONORABLE RODNEY P. FRELINGHUYSEN An Honorary Degree of Associate in Art Rodney P. Frelinghuysen is a former Republican Congressman who represented New Jersey’s 11th District and Morris County. He served 12 terms in the House of Representatives until retiring in January 2019. Frelinghuysen chaired the House Committee on Appropriations.

Congressman Frelinghuysen served three terms as a member of the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders, prior to his election to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1983, where he rose to become chairman of the State Assembly House Appropriations Committee.

His membership and eventual chairmanship of the defense subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee helped expand the critical work of Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Township, supporting our Armed Forces. He continues to be a staunch supporter of our military and veterans, and he cherishes the hard work and commitment we must all share to ensure peace and freedom.

Upon graduation from Hobart College in l969, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served until June 1971, with a year in Vietnam. In 1994, he was elected to U.S. Congress. Frelinghuysen has been a consistent champion of scientific research in the appropriations process, particularly for the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense.

A strong supporter of County College of Morris (CCM), Congressman Frelinghuysen helped fund the Alex DeCroce Media Center, the Cybersecurity program, CCM Foundation scholarships and many other initiatives. Frelinghuysen was instrumental in bringing NASA astronauts and the NASA administrator onto campus. He also recently donated his NASA memorabilia to CCM. In his time as Congressman, Frelinghuysen only missed one CCM Commencement and he always included a letter of congratulations to graduates. As well, many of his legislative staff were CCM students or graduates.

Trish O’Keefe, Ph.D., RN President Morristown Medical Center Vice President, Atlantic Health System.

Under O’Keefe’s leadership, Morristown Medical Center was the only hospital in New Jersey named one of America’s ‘50 Best Hospitals’ for three consecutive years by Healthgrades, rated the number one hospital in the state by both U.S. News & World Report and Castle Connolly, named one of the World’s Best Hospitals (the 28th best hospital in the United States) by Newsweek, and named to Becker’s Healthcare 2018 list of “100 great hospitals in America.” Leapfrog recognized the medical center with an “A” hospital safety grade—its highest—seven consecutive times, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recognized the medical center with its highest fivestar rating again in 2019.

She was instrumental in the medical center’s prestigious designation as an American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence five consecutive times-one of less than one percent of hospitals nationally to achieve this honor.

She has been recognized at the United Nations as one of 21 Nurses with Global Impact,

by Irish America magazine to its Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 list, by the American Cancer Society as a Hero of Hope, by NJ Biz as a 2018 Vanguard Series Leader in Health Care, by Seton Hall University with the Margaret C. Haley Award for making a significant contribution to healthcare, by the Morris County Chamber of Commerce as a “Woman Who Shines,” received the UMDNJ Dean’s Award for Advancing the Profession of Nursing, and the ONE/NJ Nurse Executive of the Year Award and Professional Recognition Award.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Wilkes College, her Master of Science Degree in Nursing Administration, and received her Ph.D. from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. 10

County College of Morris Peace Prize County College of Morris is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, the dissemination of knowledge, the appreciation of beauty, and respect for the individual. These and other cherished values were challenged on September 11, 2001. Shortly thereafter, the college established an annual award called “The County College of Morris Peace Prize,” funded by the CCM Foundation. With this prize, the college hopes to continually inspire students to create works of art, imagination, and wonder focused on the general theme of world peace. In turn, our students and their projects inspire us.

2019 County College of Morris Peace Prize Recipient Recipient: Nora Anton Faculty Mentor: Dorothy M. Salinas, Assistant Professor of Biology Project: Tile Mosaic, “The Survivor Tree” Nora Anton graduates summa cum laude today with her A.A. in Liberal Arts. A member of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society, she will continue her studies in psychology at Drew University with the goal of building a career in occupational therapy.

To commemorate the sacrifices of September 11, and to celebrate the spirit resilience that day represents, Anton crafted a tile mosaic over wood immortalizing the “Survivor Tree.” Her inspiration for this mosaic was the Callery pear tree that 14

was nursed back to health after being extensively damaged from the ruins of the World Trade Center.

Although the tree endured intense harm from fallen debris and rubble, it continues to grow and bloom every year, representing the experience of healing from the September 11 attacks. Anton explains that, “Rather than using the standard perfectly cut and uniform mosaic, I used broken shards of ceramics to symbolize that something positive can arise from destruction. The gray columns in the background subtly suggest the Twin Towers.”

County College of Morris grants four degrees: Associate in Arts Degree (A.A.), Associate in Fine Arts Degree (A.F.A.), Associate in Science Degree (A.S.) and Associate in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.). CCM also grants Certificates in specialized disciplines.

Professors / Dean Emeriti / Emeritae The Latin title of Professor/Dean Emeritus (masculine singular) or Professor/ Dean Emerita (feminine singular) is a special honor granted by the Board of Trustees of the County College of Morris only to a very few faculty members and academic deans who have retired from full-time employment with the most outstanding, exemplary service records. The Latin root emerit means “earned service.”

The holder of such a title retains in the academic community a courtesy rank mirroring his/her active rank immediately before retirement.

Every Professor/Dean Emeritus/ Emerita must have served the college for at least 15 years in a full-time position with faculty rank, and must have held the rank of full professor or academic dean at the time of retirement. Service must have been exemplary in terms of teaching or leadership, contributions to the college, and contributions to the larger professional and civic communities. The highest ethical standards must have been upheld in relationships with students, colleagues and superiors. The Emeriti (masculine plural) and Emeritae (feminine plural) are considered “model” academic professionals.

The History of County College of Morris Located on 222 acres of rolling terrain in Randolph, NJ, County College of Morris (CCM) has been meeting the educational and training needs of residents and businesses in Morris County for 50 years!

1965 CCM was founded.

1967 Dr. Sherman H. Masten is named the first president of CCM.

FIRST CLASS THEN: CCM opened its doors on September 24, 1968 with 592 full-time students and 703 part-time students.

NOW: We are now more than 50,000 alumni strong!

GROUNDBREAKING THEN: CCM’s first groundbreaking took place in 1967 with the construction of Henderson Hall, which opened in 1968.

NOW: There are 22 structures and state-ofthe-art facilities that have been built. The Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Center is slated to open in Fall 2020!

STYLES MAY CHANGE, BUT ENGAGEMENT CONTINUES! THEN: Student Life has always been an essential part of CCM. NOW: There are more than 50 student clubs and organizations and nine intercollegiate athletic sports programs.
