From the President Dear Graduates, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and administration of County College of Morris (CCM), I congratulate you on reaching this historical milestone in your life. As members of the Class of 2020, you have championed many challenges by finishing your studies during the COVID-19 pandemic. You transitioned to an online learning environment, mastered new technologies, strengthened your organizational and communications skills, and juggled multiple personal and family responsibilities during an extremely stressful time. You are to be commended for staying the course and finishing what you started. Having overcome so many obstacles, I expect there is little you cannot handle and I hope you will draw on the remarkable strength and focus you showed during this time for many years to come. I am, as is the entire CCM community, very proud of you. Truly, you are a class like no other. During your time at CCM, your professors, our support staff and administrators helped you to think more critically and creatively. They encouraged you to exceed beyond your expectations and they guided you on the principles of living a rewarding life. It has always been my belief that a rewarding life is strengthened by improving the lives of others. It is impossible to know the many opportunities your degree or certificate will provide for you. But one thing appears certain; you have already proven that you have what it takes to do great things with your life. This is important because, given the recent events in our country and around the world, you are needed more than ever. I encourage you to consider how you will use your knowledge, skills and time to benefit others and to serve the community you call home. There is no doubt that you are our greatest hope for a better future. Use your degree and follow your heart to create the life of your dreams and remember to give back to others so they too can lead rewarding lives. Treat every person with dignity, respect and appreciation. Help anyone you can. Create opportunity for others. Give more than you take and remember that no act of kindness is too small to make a difference. Some people believe that the purpose of their degree or certificate is to make a living. I urge you to use it to create a wonderful and rich life filled with adventure, hope, cherished experiences and, most importantly, the joy of people. People who will teach you, uplift you and enrich your years and people who you will care for, you will teach, you will uplift and you will cherish. May you continue to move forward with optimism, curiosity, courage, peace and joy. In closing, consider the words of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who shared that “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” Congratulations, best wishes and know that you will always be a part of the CCM family.

Anthony J. Iacono, Ph.D. President

AN AWARD-WINNING FACULTY Dr. Janet Eber Recognized for Teaching Excellence Dr. Janet Eber, a decades-long member of the County College of Morris (CCM) faculty and an instrumental leader in shaping the quality of teaching and learning at CCM, was presented this year with the Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty Award from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Eber is chair of the Department of English and Philosophy and an English professor at CCM. The 2019-20 Academic Year marked her 50th year on the CCM faculty. The Dale P. Parnell award, named in honor of a former AACC president, recognizes professors for their passion for teaching, willingness to support students inside and outside of the classroom, participation in college committees and the life of their college, and service that exceeds what is required to ensure students are successful. “Dr. Eber has impacted the lives of thousands of students. She is a stellar professor with an impact that has a profound influence on CCM,” said CCM President Anthony J. Iacono. “It is no exaggeration to state that CCM would not be the quality institution of higher education that it is today without her many contributions. She also is a highly sought after mentor and advisor by students and also other faculty members who recognize her commitment to their success.” At CCM, Eber directs the work of 60 professors. She has served as chair of the college’s Curriculum Committee for more than a decade and also as chair of the college’s Academic Standards Committee, General Education Task Force and Academic Integrity Review Board. She has chaired numerous search committees and was interim dean of the School of Liberal Arts three times.

GRAND MARSHAL Professor Laura Gabrielsen Laura Gabrielsen has been a member of the CCM faculty for 43 years. She holds a B.A. and M.A. from Seton Hall University. She is an assistant chairperson in the Department of English and Philosophy and oversees developmental education. For many years she has been the advisor of Honors Studies, which encourages students to develop their talents in various academic disciplines. She is an active member of many campus committees, is a past advisor of Phi Theta Kappa, and presently oversees the student Writer’s Club. She also lectures on various literary topics to community groups several times a year. 5

Professors / Dean Emeriti / Emerita The Latin title of Professor/Dean Emeritus (masculine singular) or Professor/ Dean Emerita (feminine singular) is a special honor granted by the Board of Trustees of County College of Morris only to a very few faculty members and academic deans who have retired from full-time employment with the most outstanding, exemplary service records. The Latin root emerit means “earned by service.” The holder of such a title retains in the academic community a courtesy rank mirroring their active rank immediately before retirement.

8

Every Professor/Dean Emeritus/ Emerita must have served the college for at least 15 years in a full-time position with faculty rank, and must have held the rank of full professor or academic dean at the time of retirement. Service must have been exemplary in terms of teaching or leadership, contributions to the college, and contributions to the larger professional and civic communities. The highest ethical standards must have been upheld in relationships with students, colleagues and superiors. The Emeriti (masculine plural) and Emerita (feminine plural) are considered “model” academic professionals.

2020 Commencement Speaker

REV. DR. SIDNEY S. WILLIAMS, JR. Rev. Dr. Sidney S. Williams, Jr. is an impact investor and practical theologian with more than 30+ years of experience in corporate and community development. Prior to becoming a minister, he worked on Wall Street where he developed a successful track record for managing the research, analysis and development of sustainable business models for new products and services; participated in over $10 billion in public equity and debt offerings, acquisitions, mergers, joint ventures and intellectual property licensing; and worked for first-tier investment banks. He has also lectured in graduate business programs and seminaries, as well as consulted with corporate executives from Asia, Europe and the United States. Building on his early career experiences while working on Wall Street, Dr. Williams is known for making a continuous effort to identify the intersectionality of theological and marketplace frameworks. He is the author of two books – Morning Meditations: 100 Days to Believing You’re Successful and Fishing Differently: Ministry Formation in the Marketplace. Dr. Williams has pastored churches in Cape Town, South Africa as well as trained pastors and served as a missionary on three continents. He currently serves as the senior pastor of Bethel Church of Morristown and has guided the development of the Spring Street Community Development Corporation to improve the quality of life for Morris County families. Programs operated through the community development corporation include Table of Hope, which serves meals five days a week, offers a food pantry and operates a mobile food delivery service, all at no cost; the SOAR program to provide middle and high school students with a pathway to college; and the New Life Recovery & Reentry Program to support those suffering from addictions. After obtaining a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Howard University, Williams earned a MBA from the Wharton School of Business and then a Masters of Divinity from the Wesley Theological Seminary. In 2018, he earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Payne Theological Seminary. Like many CCM students, he was the first in his family to graduate from college.

THE SEAL: • T he lamp of learning cresting the shield represents the paramount purpose of the institution. • T he polaris and globe represent the guiding role which education plays in the world. • T he atomic symbol signifies the age in which we live, made possible by the accumulation of knowledge as represented by the book. • The three orbits of the atomic symbol are the dimensions of the student’s

education at the college: intellectual, personal and social. • T he knight’s helmet is excerpted from the official seal of County of Morris and symbolizes the sponsorship of the college by the county. • T hree dividers on each side of the 1965 represents that New Jersey was the third of the original 13 states. • “Sapere Aude” means “Dare to Know.”

THE MACE: The academic ceremonial mace is carried aloft and forward by the Grand Marshal in the academic procession. The mace incorporates the seal of County College of Morris. The mace is constructed of precious metals and signifies protection of governmental, ecclesiastical or academic “authority.”

County College of Morris Peace Prize As an educational institution, County College of Morris (CCM) is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, the dissemination of knowledge, the appreciation of beauty and respect for the individual. These and other cherished values were challenged on September 11, 2001. Shortly thereafter, endorsing a recommendation from the Center for Teaching Excellence, the college established an annual award called “The County College of Morris Peace Prize.” All students are invited to create a piece of work focused on the general theme of world peace. The prize, funded by the CCM Foundation, consists of an engraved plaque and a monetary award. With this prize, the college hopes to continually inspire students to create works of art, imagination and wonder. In turn, our students and their projects inspire us.

2020 County College of Morris Peace Prize Recipient Recipient: Antonina Mammana Project: “What Is Peace?” Antonina Mammana graduates summa cum laude with her Associate of Science degree, majoring in mathematics with an education concentration. Mammana is transferring to Montclair State University where she intends to pursue a degree in math education with the goal of becoming a high school teacher or college professor. Among the aspects she most values in her life are her Christian faith, spending time with her family and friends, and developing her musical and theatrical abilities. 10

Mammana’s project envisioned peace as a concept that must begin every day, rooted in the seemingly insignificant and mundane. She crafted a video recording her hand sketching a flower, while her own narration urges her audience to consider peace as the product of small, individual, personal choices. Her unity of words and visuals strengthens her message that the choices leading to peace are not easy but can be simple and represent a journey rather than an accomplishment.

2020 Candidates for the Degrees and Certificates The following is a list of potential candidates for degrees and certificates. The official roster of graduates is recorded in the Office of Records and Registration. County College of Morris grants four degrees: Associate in Arts Degree (A.A.), Associate in Fine Arts Degree (A.F.A.), Associate in Science Degree (A.S.) and Associate in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.). CCM also grants Certificates in specialized disciplines. Honors noted in the program are based on cumulative grade point average as of May 27, 2020, changes in honors status after May 27, 2020 are not reflected in this program.
