Reckless Belgian driver causes chaos in Torrevieja

A 49-year-old female Belgian driver embarked on a perilous journey on the N-332 and the streets of Torrevieja,

ultimately crashing her vehicle into a parked car, after travelling on the wrong side of the road. The dramatic incident

prompted the intervention of vigilant residents, who detained the driver until law enforcement officers arrived at the scene. A breathalyser tests revealed an alarming excess of the permitted alcohol level, with the woman being more than three times over the limit. The driver is now under investigation for two serious offenses against traffic safety: reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages. With a track record of previous incidents, the Belgian national

has found herself under the jurisdiction of Investigative Court Number 4 of Torrevieja. The Civil Guard, revealing details of the incident on Friday, explained that the driver’s erratic journey had been reported by concerned motorists travelling on the same road. Witnesses alerted emergency services, drawing attention to the dangerous zigzag route the car was taking. A striking image released by the Civil Guard captures the moment when

the vehicle crossed into the opposite lane at the exit of the N-332 onto the Avenida Cortes Valencianas and Aguas Nuevas. This section, known as Alto de la Casilla, is located to the north of Torrevieja centre. Despite clearly marked lane with pivots and a double continuous line, the car can be seen blatantly veering into the opposite lane. Having completed this hazardous route, amazingly without inident, the vehicle left the N332 heading towards the town centre of Torrevieja. Over a span of approximately 400 meters, the car was driven in the wrong direction, culminating in a collision with a parked car on a street within the town. Swift action by witnesses prevented the driver from leaving the scene, and they detained her until the arrival of officers from the Civil Guard and the city’s Traffic detachment. The Civil Guard’s communication office in Alicante highlighted the crucial role of citizen collaboration in the arrest, asserting that such swift action averted a potentially more severe road accident or a continuing series of incidents. Citing the criminal code, the same source outlined potential penalties for those found guilty of such offences, ranging from 6 months to 2 years in prison, coupled with the suspension of the right to drive motor vehicles or mopeds for a period spanning 1 to 6 years.
