Reckless Belgian driver causes chaos in Torrevieja

A 49-year-old female Belgian driver embarked on a perilous journey on the N-332 and the streets of Torrevieja,

ultimately crashing her vehicle into a parked car, after travelling on the wrong side of the road. The dramatic incident

prompted the intervention of vigilant residents, who detained the driver until law enforcement officers arrived at the scene. A breathalyser tests revealed an alarming excess of the permitted alcohol level, with the woman being more than three times over the limit. The driver is now under investigation for two serious offenses against traffic safety: reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages. With a track record of previous incidents, the Belgian national

has found herself under the jurisdiction of Investigative Court Number 4 of Torrevieja. The Civil Guard, revealing details of the incident on Friday, explained that the driver’s erratic journey had been reported by concerned motorists travelling on the same road. Witnesses alerted emergency services, drawing attention to the dangerous zigzag route the car was taking. A striking image released by the Civil Guard captures the moment when

the vehicle crossed into the opposite lane at the exit of the N-332 onto the Avenida Cortes Valencianas and Aguas Nuevas. This section, known as Alto de la Casilla, is located to the north of Torrevieja centre. Despite clearly marked lane with pivots and a double continuous line, the car can be seen blatantly veering into the opposite lane. Having completed this hazardous route, amazingly without inident, the vehicle left the N332 heading towards the town centre of Torrevieja. Over a span of approximately 400 meters, the car was driven in the wrong direction, culminating in a collision with a parked car on a street within the town. Swift action by witnesses prevented the driver from leaving the scene, and they detained her until the arrival of officers from the Civil Guard and the city’s Traffic detachment. The Civil Guard’s communication office in Alicante highlighted the crucial role of citizen collaboration in the arrest, asserting that such swift action averted a potentially more severe road accident or a continuing series of incidents. Citing the criminal code, the same source outlined potential penalties for those found guilty of such offences, ranging from 6 months to 2 years in prison, coupled with the suspension of the right to drive motor vehicles or mopeds for a period spanning 1 to 6 years.

Easter bookings soar in Valencia Region Spain’s tourism sector is poised for another robust year in 2024, building on the significant boost witnessed in 2023. The first week of the new year has already indicated promising prospects, with Easter bookings experiencing a remarkable 46% increase across the Valencia region. From January 1 to 7, a surge in double-digit growth has been reported in key destinations within the provinces of Alicante, including the renowned Costa Blanca, as well as Valencia and Castellón. According to statistics provided by Hosteltur, which analysed data from the TravelgateX platform, the Valencian Community has seen a surge in hotel reservations over the last seven days, recording a staggering 46.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, compared to the previous

week (December 25 to 31, 2023), reservations for hotel destinations in the Community have spiked by 87.9%. Among the ten destinations in Spain with the highest volume of reservations on the platform, Valencia ranks eighth in terms of year-on-year growth. Topping the list are the Region of Murcia (+208%), Aragon (+88%), Community of Madrid (+57.2%), Andalusia (+56.8%), Catalonia (+53.4%), Balearic Islands (+52.4%), and Castilla y León (+50.8%). The surge in reservations is not limited to domestic tourists, as there has been a general advancement in bookings for Spain from January 1 to 7. Requests for stays in Spanish hotels, made over 90 days in advance of the expected arrival date, have increased by 37.9% at a national level. Notably, visitors from the United Kingdom,

Germany, and the Nordic regions are among the early planners, known for booking their holidays at the beginning of the year. While national tourists constitute the majority of early bookings (44.8%), British visitors follow closely at 27.5%. Other countries, such as Germany, Ireland, France, and the United States, also contribute to the surge in reservations, albeit at a considerable distance. Particularly noteworthy is the significant increase in reservations by Portuguese tourists (221.5%) and Irish tourists (150%) in the first seven days of the year, underlining the diverse international interest in Spanish destinations. As the tourism industry gears up for another promising year, these early indicators suggest a positive trend for Spain’s travel sector in 2024.

Fugitive flees on electric scooter The Guardia Civil has successfully arrested a 41-year-old woman who was wanted on twelve judicial charges spanning various criminal activities. The arrest unfolded in Torrevieja, where the woman attempted to flee from law enforcement agents by using an electric scooter. The incident dates back to November when a Guardia Civil patrol observed two women displaying suspicious behaviour

on a street in Torrevieja’s city centre. Acting on their observations, the officers proceeded to identify both individuals. During this process, one of the women, who was riding an electric scooter, attempted to evade the police. After a pursuit lasting several minutes, law enforcement managed to catch up with the fleeing woman and intercepted her. Upon stopping her, the officers were surprised to find that she was wearing a

wig and sunglasses, making her identity challenging to confirm. Furthermore, she provided false information, claiming to be a relative who bore a striking resemblance. Upon uncovering the suspect’s true identity, the officers learned that she was a 41-year-old woman with twelve outstanding judicial summonses, all from the courts of Alicante. The charges against her included offenses related

to robbery, fraud, theft, reception, drug trafficking, and breach of sentence. Promptly arrested for these alleged crimes, the woman was brought before Investigative Court number 3 of Torrevieja, which ordered her imprisonment. The arrest sheds light on the collaborative efforts of law enforcement in apprehending individuals with multiple charges, ensuring accountability within the judicial system.

Radars to increase Spain in world’s most powerful passport rankings across Spain In a bid to further improve road safety, S p a i n ’s G eneral Direc torate of Traffic (DGT) is set to boost its arsenal of mobile s p e e d detectors. D e s p i te a gradual decline in road accidents over the past two decades, the DGT believes that the increasing installation of speed cameras has played a crucial role in this positive trend. The DGT has allocated over 1.2 million euros for the acquisition of 15 new mobile radars. These movable speedometers will offer enhanced speed control capabilities, both within Guardia Civil Traffic cars and at fixed locations atop tripods, whether the vehicles are in motion or stationary. The devices will include a dynamic speed detector, a preinstallation device, a sensor, camera and processing unit, flash system, mechanical fastenings, tripod, and tablet computer. A shift in the DGT’s strategy to curb speeding has seen an increase in the number of radars deployed on secondary roads. Mobile devices,

in particular, have proven highly effective as they allow for dynamic use in addition to static deployment. Excluding the roads of Catalonia and the Basque Country, the DGT currently operates 355 active radars at fixed points, measuring instantaneous speeds, and 64 radars in sections to gauge average speeds. Over the next three years, these figures are set to rise with the installation of 150 new speedometers, of which 60% will be sectional, and the remainder will be fixed. Additionally, 325 mobile radars are operated by agents of the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil (ATGC), while the DGT Air Resources Unit contributes to aerial surveillance and control with 11 helicopters equipped with Pegasus radars. This comprehensive approach aims to further enhance Spain’s road safety measures and ensure effective monitoring across various terrains.

Four European nations - France, Germany, Italy, and Spain - have secured the coveted position of possessing the world’s most powerful passports, sharing the top spot with Singapore. Japan, which had slipped to third place in the previous ranking, has reclaimed its position at the summit, resulting in an unprecedented six-way tie for the lead. The Henley Passport Index, a comprehensive ranking system evaluating passports based on the number of countries offering visa-free access, places these European nations in a remarkable position, boasting visa-free entry to an unprecedented 194 out of 227 countries globally. This information is regularly updated to reflect changes in visa policies across countries. In the latest ranking, Germany, Italy, and Spain were situated in second place, while France held the third spot. However, the latest 2024 ranking sees European nations dominating the top 10, with Finland and Sweden rising to second place alongside South Korea. Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands occupy the third position, followed by Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, and the UK in fourth. The top 10 is rounded out by Greece, Malta, and Switzerland in fifth place, Czechia and Poland, joining Australia and New Zealand in sixth place, and Hungary tying with Canada and the US in seventh. Estonia and Lithuania secure the eighth position, Latvia, Slovakia, and Slovenia in ninth, and Iceland in the tenth spot.

The broader European representation continues, with countries like Cyprus and Lichtenstein at 12th place, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania at 13th, Monaco at 14th, and Andorra at 19th. Moving down the list, Ukraine holds the 32nd spot, followed by several Balkan countries, including Serbia at 37th, North Macedonia at 45th, Montenegro at 46th, and Albania at 48th. Moldova sits at 49th place, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia at 50th, Turkey at 52nd, Belarus at 64th, Kosovo at 68th, Azerbaijan at 70th, and Armenia at 74th. The Henley Passport Index, now in its 19th year, ranks the world’s 199 passports based on their holders’ visafree access to destinations. The rankings, previously updated four times per year, will now be updated monthly, according to global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners, which utilizes data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The scoring system awards one point for each of the 227 destinations a passport holder can visit without a visa, including visa on arrival, visitor’s permit, or electronic travel authority. No points are given for destinations requiring a visa or government-approved e-visa before departure.

Visa free Over the years, the average number of destinations accessible visa-free has nearly doubled, rising from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. However, the gap widens for countries at the bottom of the list. Afghanistan, remaining at the bottom with the weakest passport, has visa-free access to only 28 countries, contrasting sharply with the 194 accessible to France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, and Yemen round out the bottom five, with the UAE emerging as the biggest climber in the past decade, ascending from 55th to 11th position. China and Ukraine have also made significant strides, adding 21 countries each to their scores over the last decade. New research by Henley & Partners underscores a correlation between greater economic performance and visafree access, openness to international trade, investment, and the exchange of skills.

Environmental emergency as millions of plastic pellets flood Spanish coastlines Northern Spain is grappling with an environmental crisis as millions of minuscule plastic pellets inundate its shores, prompting local authorities to declare an emergency. The pollution is believed to be a consequence of a shipping container accident that occurred last month. Officials suspect that the plastic pellets, each a potential hazard to marine life, originated from a shipping container that fell off a ship. The spill has triggered an urgent response from environmental authorities, who warn of the pellets’ adverse impact on the ecosystem, particularly on fish that may mistake them for fish eggs. Cristobal López, spokesperson for the Spanish environmental group Ecologistas en Acción, voiced concern about the environmental ramifications, stating, “These little balls of plastic are an environmental problem because fish confuse them with fish eggs and eat them and they enter the food chain … and end up on our dinner tables.” López made these remarks from a beach in

Galicia, a region that has been heavily affected by the plastic influx. The regional governments of Galicia and neighbouring Asturias have appealed to Spain’s national government for assistance. In response, Spanish state prosecutors have initiated an investigation, expressing fears that the pellets may possess toxic properties. There are also indications that these plastic particles have been found on French shores, amplifying the cross-border environmental concerns. Spain’s government representative for the Galicia region revealed that the container ship involved, Toconao, sailing under a Liberian flag, lost six containers off the coast of Portugal, approximately 80 kilometers west of Viana do Castelo. One of these containers contained 1,000 sacks of pellets, each sack weighing 25 kilograms and filled with the tiny plastic balls commonly used in plastic product manufacturing. The spill was reported to authorities on 13th December, as hundreds of thousands of the small white pellets

began washing up along Spain’s Atlantic shoreline. Environmental organisations, including Greenpeace, estimate the total number of pellets lost to be in the millions. Concerns mount as these pellets can break down into even smaller microplastics, posing a threat to marine and human life. Fishermen, in particular, may inadvertently catch fish that have ingested these particles. Spain’s Minister for the Environment, Teresa Ribera, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “The contamination of the oceans and ecosystems with plastics is one of the biggest problems faced by humanity.” She stressed the need for a thorough investigation to determine if the transport and shipping companies exercised proper precautions. Volunteers and workers have mobilised to clean up the affected beaches and coasts, with the region heavily reliant on a substantial fish and shellfish industry. Galicia, in particular, has painful memories of environmental devastation following the 2002 Prestige tanker oil spill.

More than 6,600 lost or missing in 2023 trying to reach Spain A migrant rights group has disclosed that a staggering 6,618 people lost their lives or went missing while attempting to reach Spain by sea in 2023. This disturbing figure, considered ‘shameful,’ is nearly three times higher than the previous year’s count of 2,390 and marks the highest since tracking began in 2007, according to the charity Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders) coordinator, Helena Maleno, during a recent news conference. The reported total includes 384 children and is based on data provided by families of migrants who perished or disappeared, along with official rescue statistics. Maleno attributed the surge in migrant casualties to a lack of resources for rescuers. Approximately half of the incidents involved migrants departing from Senegal, where political instability, job scarcity, rising food prices, and depleting fish stocks have driven thousands to flee. The majority of the fatalities, amounting to 6,007, occurred on the Atlantic migration route from Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands. As control measures tightened in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands became a preferred destination for individuals fleeing poverty and conflict in Africa, often aboard overcrowded and barely

seaworthy vessels lacking sufficient provisions for the journey. Maleno emphasised that the Atlantic route has become the world’s deadliest. The number of migrants arriving illegally in Spain in 2023 nearly doubled compared to the previous year, reaching 56,852, the highest since 2018. Approximately 70% of these arrivals occurred in the Canary Islands, located just 100 kilometres from the northwest coast of Africa. Departures on long wooden fishing vessels, known as pirogues, originated from Morocco, Mauritania, Gambia, and Senegal. The direct journey from Senegal to the Canaries spans about a week of challenging sailing, covering approximately 1,600 kilometres. To evade controls, smugglers sometimes opt for longer, riskier routes, navigating west into the open Atlantic before turning north to the Canaries. El Hierro, the westernmost island, experienced an unprecedented

surge in arrivals last year. In response to the influx, Spain’s central government has pledged a €50 million aid package for the Canary Islands. Madrid has also intensified cooperation with Senegal and Mauritania to curb boat departures for the Canaries. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska claimed that this collaboration prevented over 27,000 wouldbe migrants from departing for Spain in the previous year, emphasizing that lives were saved. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), relying on press reports and indirect accounts, reported over 1,200 migrant deaths or disappearances last year while attempting to reach Spain. However, the UN agency acknowledged that this figure is likely to be ‘considerably underestimated’ due to the challenges of documenting sea disasters, with many bodies never recovered.

The residents of Pinar de Campoverde ask for more Civil Guard troops in the face of the wave of robberies

The residents of Pinar de Campoverde in Pilar de la Horadada live on constant alert due to the wave of robberies that they have been suffering since last November, therefore, they have requested the permanent presence and patrol of the police forces and bodies. security in the urbanization. This Wednesday, the City Council and commanders of the Local Police and Civil Guard held a meeting with the residents who were informed that they are investigating

these thefts and that they will forward their requests to the Government Subdelegation, although it is necessary that each theft be reported to process reinforcements and clarify criminal cases that are committed. The neighbors consider that more presence of the Local Police and the Civil Guard will prevent robberies, since in recent days there has been a patrol and the robberies that are committed by several people and always with the

same modus operandi have decreased. Data that the neighbors know first-hand, after viewing the images of the security cameras that practically all of them have already installed in this urbanization. Until this situation is resolved, neighbors cannot help but feel great concern and fear, which has even led them to modify habits and plans, as happened this Christmas when they canceled reservations and family gatherings so as not to leave the houses uninhabited.

Unemployment rises in Vega Baja GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The UK has tentatively continued to show signs of decelerating inflation in 2024. Research company Kantar published data on Wednesday 3rd January that showed grocery price inflation falling at the fastest pace on record in December, with annual inflation falling from 9.1% in November down to 6.7% in the run-up to Christmas. Figures released by the British Retail Consortium earlier in the week showed food price inflation also fall to 6.7% from 7.7% the previous month. While these declines can, in large, be attributed to Christmas promotions, with nearly a third of spending in the run-up to Christmas made on offer purchases, it represented the high proportion of promotional spending since December 2020 and also the busiest Christmas for supermarkets since 2019. UK growth data was released by the Office of National Statistics this morning, showing GDP had grown by 0.3% from October to November 2023, more than the 0.2% expected by markets. This was a significant increase from the previous month after the economy contracted by 0.3% from October to November. The rebound was

driven by growth in the services sector, which benefitted from the Black Friday Sales, with the ONS reporting strong months for retail, car leasing and computer games companies. The pound remained steady against the dollar and the euro following the news, sitting just above 1.275 and 1.16 respectively. Although, the GBP/USD rate is most likely driven by the ongoing dollar weakness we’ve seen since the end of last year.

EUR It’s been a quiet week for the euro this week. Although last week we saw EU inflation data indicate that it had rebounded in December. Germany’s preliminary CPI data for the last month of the year came in at 3.7% year-onyear (YoY), 0.5% higher than the same metric in November. It was a similar story in France, where YoY inflation rose from 3.5% in November to 3.7% in December. Across the entire Eurozone, there was an inflationary uptick after six months of decline, rising from 2.4% in November to 2.9% in December. However, this figure was slightly below the economists’ forecast from a Reuters poll by 0.1%.

The year 2023 closed with a new rise in unemployment in the Vega Baja region. The data published by the Public Employment Service recorded in the month of December shows an increase in unemployment by 59 more unemployed people , compared to the month of November, which places the total number of unemployed people at 24,426. The increase in

unemployment has been widespread in practically all municipalities. If we analyze the most relevant data, according to UGT , there is a slight increase in the municipalities of Orihuela and Torrevieja with 21 more unemployed in both towns and their unemployment rates stand at 4,641 and 7,432 unemployed people, respectively. Behind them, Guardamar del Segura also

increased its unemployment rate by 18 people and Almoradí by 16. However, unemployment rates are reduced in municipalities such as Los Montesinos with 12 fewer unemployed, in San Fulgencio with 11, in Catral with 10, in Benejúzar with 8, in Albatera with 7 and Redován and Daya Nueva with 5 unemployed people.

Torrevieja will expand its Local Police staff in 2024

Torrevieja will expand its Local Police staff in 2024 by thirty agents, as announced by the mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón, at the microphones of Radio Orihuela Cadena SER. The first mayor explained that one of the municipal areas where the most job creation will occur this year with new positions is in the Local Police and Social Services. This is one of the objectives that the PP government team has set for this year, among others that are reflected in the 2024 Municipal Budget, which

amounts to 157.8 million euros and which translates into a transformative city. Currently, one of the works that are being carried out with the greatest investment are those of the port, which, according to the mayor, are progressing at a good pace. It is estimated that in the summer the works on the underground parking and those relating to traffic in the area, as well as the leisure environment, will have been completed. The work at the moment focuses on this part of the project, as well as the reform

of the Levante dam. The mayor has also announced that there will soon be important developments in terms of accessible housing for vulnerable people, for which negotiations are being carried out with the Generalitat Valenciana. Likewise, there will be news in Tourism and Torrevieja is going to make a strong commitment to different musical festivals that have already been proven to be an important attraction for residents, visitors and tourists.

A program full of events, activities, music, colour and structured in a more attractive tourist form, concentrating events on weekends, so that the interested public can come to visit one of the most interesting festivals at the regional level of our municipality. In addition, the Department of Festivities has invested in online and offline advertising to publicise the Carnival of our municipality in different autonomous communities: Alicante, Valencia, the provinces of Murcia, Albacete and Madrid. The segmentation of the public has been done by focusing on people interested in: parties, events, concerts, festivals, culture, leisure, fun, entertainment within the social concept and carnivals, who have the possibility of moving to our town. PROGRAMME: Friday 26th January The starting signal for the festivities will take place next Friday, 26th January, in the Municipal Theatre of Torrevieja, with the opening speech to be given by the famous actress and presenter, Sara Escudero. Known for participating as co-host and collaborator in countless national television programs, such as Zapeando, the Comedy Club or the Intermediate, and films such as “Padre no hay más que uno” or “Actos por partes”. In this event, the documentary summary of the last edition of the torrevejense carnival will be premiered, where comparsas and participants will be able to be a living part of this great party.

Saturday 27th January The following day, Saturday 27th January, in the Municipal Theatre, for the first time in the history of the Carnival, there will be a double session. At 18:00 and 21:00, the Coronation of the Carnival Kings will take place. This year the children’s crown will be held by the young Irene del Monte, the second King of Carnival, Damian Bear, and our Main Queen, Eva Viuda, will present us with their spectacular fantasies prepared to dazzle during these carnivals. In addition, the Golden Carnival Shield will be awarded to Mª Teresa Moreno, “Mari Tere la del Tiburón”, historical comparsista and participant in numerous editions of the torrevejense carnival.

Sunday 28th January On Sunday, 28th January, the Carnival moves to La Mata (Encarnación Puchol square) to celebrate the 2nd Carnival Paella Competition. At 12:00 hours, the 3rd edition of the Animal Carnival will take place, where animal shelters and animal protection organisations will have their space to promote the adoption of animals. The day will be rounded off with a giant paella, entertainment for the little ones, musical performances and a prize draw. Friday 2nd February The second weekend begins on Friday 2 February, with the celebration of the V Quedada Carnavalera, where the carnival will go in parade giving the notice to be ready for the big parade. Saturday 3rd February On Saturday 3rd February, the International Auditorium of Torrevieja, will open its doors to the XV Drag Queen Gala “Ciudad de Torrevieja”, where Drags from all over Spain, will

perform their best show to a dedicated audience, with the aim of winning the crown of Drag Queen 2024. This year, this fantastic gala, one of the most important in Spain, will once again be directed and presented by “La Plexy”, official presenter of Madrid Pride and will feature several top level surprise guest artists and a jury made up of industry professionals and some celebrities, who will surprise the audience. Also this year, the Asoc. Cultural Carnival of Torrevieja, has increased the prizes for the winners. Tickets will be available for purchase from Friday 12 January.

Sunday 4th February And with the Drag Queen’s hangover, the city will put on those costumes and fantasies that they have been working hard for a year to fill the main artery of the city in a tide of light, colour, rhinestones, feathers, but, above all, lots and lots of rhythm. It will be on Sunday 4th February when the thousands of carnival participants will parade in the Grand Carnival Parade Competition. From 16:00 hours, from the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, the tide of the 30 groups of the Torrevieja carnival will start the parade to the rhythm of choreographies. As has been the case in recent editions, the spectacular “Exhibition Area” will culminate this magnificent parade, with the staging of each of the fantasies and costumes. A jury made up of 7 members, professionals and lovers of the world of carnival, sewing and make-up, will be in charge of assessing and deciding the prize-giving. Thursday 8th February The following week begins on Wednesday and Thursday, with various comparsas performing shows

and dances in various schools in our municipality. That same Thursday, 8th February, the traditional Carnival of the Elderly will be held at the Municipal Leisure Centre (CMO), where our elderly people will dance in their best costumes and the event will close with the prizegiving ceremony for the best costume.

Friday 9th February On Friday 9th February, the city will once again take to the streets, this time it will be the little ones who will fill Ramón Gallud street with their costumes. The “Carnaval de los Coles” will once again be the moment when the whole school community of the city will parade showing those costumes and disguises that they have made themselves in the schools. This fun parade will start at 17:00 hours, from the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, culminating in the Paseo Vista Alegre, where there will be entertainment, dancing and chocolate for the enjoyment of the little ones. And as a great novelty for this 2024, for the first time in the history of the Torrevieja Carnival, from 20:30, again Ramón Gallud Street will host the 1st Parade Contest of Comparsas Foráneas del Carnaval de Torrevieja. Numerous comparsas from different cities will perform for the first time in their own parade, with their own sound and will enjoy the warmth of the Torrevieja public. For this historic occasion, the first two prizes will be decided by the traditional jury composed of Golden Shields of Carnival and also as a novelty, the third prize will be decided by the comparsas torrevejenses with their votes. Prizes will be awarded in the Paseo Vista Alegre with music and fun. Saturday 10th February On Saturday, 10th February, the

“Gran Desfile Nocturno” will take place from 20:00 hours along Ramón Gallud Street starting from the Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen. With a more informal, fun and party atmosphere, where comparsas that did not participate in the competition parade, will add magic to this spectacular and fun parade. It will end on the stage of the Paseo Vista Alegre, where the rhythm of the best local DJ’s will give way to the long awaited awards ceremony, ending with a surprise performance. Sunday 11th February The “Concurso Nacional de Comparsas y Chirigotas” (National Contest of Comparsas and Chirigotas) will bring the festivities to a close on Sunday, 11 February, in the Municipal Theatre at 18:00. That same morning, the charangas will once again take to the streets of the town centre in the 3rd edition of the CarnaBares. The events will be free with invitation, which can be collected at the box office of the Municipal Theatre of Torrevieja, from next Tuesday, January 15. The Drag Queen Gala, will have a single price of 10€ and can also be purchased at the box office or through the web: www.culturatorrevieja.com. Finally, among the activities that will be developed these days, the Cultural Association of Torrevieja Carnival in collaboration with the Municipal School of Photography, at the proposal of this and with the support of the Municipal Institute of Culture “Joaquin Chapaprieta”, will make a photographic magazine with images of the different groups and groups and individuals who make up the Carnival of Torrevieja, photographs that will be shown later in a fantastic exhibition.

Subsidy allows Rafal to improve Great start to the year for sports tourism in Torrevieja industrial estate The Councillor for Sports of the City of Torrevieja, Diana Box Alonso, reports that this year the activity of Sports Tourism has taken an important and novel twist, as it begins in an extraordinary way with the presence of several teams doing their sports stages in Torrevieja. In this way, the Sports City begins the month of January with several Norwegian and Finnish Athletics clubs training in its facilities, all of them doing their sports holidays with various modalities: running, long jump, high jump, javelin and shot put. During their training you can see how they enjoy the weather we have in our city which offers them sunny days, and although they have experienced some windy and cold days, for them these are quite good training conditions. Diana Box has emphasized that January has always been a rather complicated month to attract sports tourism, but the commercial and marketing actions carried out by the City Council of Torrevieja through the Department of Tourism and Sports, Generalitat Valenciana, Diputación de Alicante with its brand Costa Blanca, and all the productive sectors involved in commerce and tourism, are

bearing fruit and, each year, not only are the numbers of visitors for tourism and sporting reasons exceeded, but it is also possible to deseasonalise and gradually fill the gaps in the most difficult months for the tourist market. The Dutch travel agency Voetbalreizen.com BV has been the big novelty this January. They started working with the Sports Tourism Department in the middle of the year 2023 to be able to bring several Dutch football teams in these first days of January, being the first year in which they set their target in Torrevieja with several sports stages of 3 Dutch football teams. The football clubs Pax, Fortuna Be Quick and Victoria, all of them are doing several trainings in the Ciudad Deportiva and have played a triangular between them. It has also visited our city Arnhemseboys Football Club, also of Dutch origin and that in

this his first year in Torrevieja are developing several trainings and play a friendly match in the area. https://www.arnhemseboys.nl. This extraordinary launch of 2024 will be completed with the visit of the football team also from the Netherlands DVV’09, which will arrive in Torrevieja this coming Friday, being the fourth time that our city becomes their favourite destination. Finally, from the Department of Sports Tourism reports that January will not stop with the departure of these groups, as well as several events involving the participation of athletes from other nationalities through school days of bilingual public schools in the area, there are several more groups of Nordic athletes and several basketball teams from Poland who will visit Torrevieja and make their training in our sports facilities on the occasion of their sports holidays.

Rafal has recently carried out various improvement actions for the provision of infrastructure and services in the town’s industrial estate through a subsidy granted by the IVACE of 127,022 euros. As indicated by the Councilor for Works and Services of the Rafal City Council , Jesús Manuel Ramón, “the main objective of the intervention has been to optimize the facilities as much as possible, both to be able to offer better services to the companies installed there, and to convert in a more attractive and suitable location for other entities that want to transfer their economic activity to the municipality.”

The mayor has pointed out as one of the improvements made the implementation of a bicycle lane, which connects the industrial area with the urban center of the town, to facilitate sustainable travel for staff to their workplace. The road is separated from road traffic for greater user safety. In this way, “the use of vehicles and parking space is reduced, also favoring the improvement of the environment and the creation of healthy habits,” said the councilor. Another of the main actions has been the installation of a company directory with information on the services of the industrial zone, which includes a map at the entrances

to the industrial estate with the location of the companies installed there, and includes the improvement of signage to promote accessibility. Likewise, the Rafael mayor has indicated that the underground connection of the medium and low voltage lines has also been carried out in order to offer a better electrical supply service, as well as with the layout of the fiber network, which They leave the industrial site with the necessary infrastructure for the installation of fiber optics, an indispensable tool for commercial work in recent times, for better Internet access for all the companies installed there.

Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 320 members with their PCs , smartphones and more. Group members can attend meetings in person or online using Zoom or Teams. If you have a question or problem with any household technology needing my help or want to join the Technology Help Group please email Brian at cbtechnology.help@gmail.com. As a group member, you would have access to the group website which contains previous session notes, handouts and access to previous Costa Blanca People published articles. Scan the QR for a reminder of what the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group offers. Meetings at Dilly’s Bar, Av. Castuera, 3, 03184 El Chaparral, Alicante. Group meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 10:00 to 12:00. The Next meeting is on Wednesday 14th February 2024. You are welcome to attend. “We have photos in Google Photos, Google Drive, and Google Docs, on the laptop and both our phones. Can we delete a photo so that it will disappear from all these different areas of

storage in one go?” No, not normally possible in one action. When you take a photo on a phone or tablet, which is logged in to a Google account, the photo will be stored on the phone in Gallery and Google Photos. If you have set it up the photo may also be in Google Drive or One Drive. “II know how to empty my email bin but how do you empty other bins in Google Drive or Google Photos and other folders?” Emptying the Bins for Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos is done automatically after 30 days (60 days for Google Photos). While in the bin the files are included in your Cloud Storage limit of 15 G Bytes of free Cloud Storage shared between Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. You can empty the bin by selecting the Bin and selecting “Empty Bin now”. Gallery, Documents and Downloads don’t have “bins”. For a Windows computer when you delete files they go to the “Recycle Bin” which remains recoverable until the Recycle Bin is emptied by the user. For mobile devices when you delete files they are not recoverable.

You can delete photos from Gallery from within Gallery. Dependent on your phone you may have an App named “Files”. With this App, you can delete files. If you download and install an App named “File Manager +”. With this App, you can manipulate files (copy, paste, move, rename, or delete) and photos on your mobile device, SD Card, connected USB storage or Cloud Storage. “I am getting text messages in Spanish which say there is delivery for me, but they need my address. There is a link to provide the required information. Scam?” This is almost certainly a scam. Any legitimate delivery company would have your address when you placed the order. If it was a gift the sender would not have been able to send anything without a postal address. The link would probably take you to an official form asking for more personal information than just a delivery address. Delete and Block the sender. Brian Hoile, Technology Help Group

San nt n is the rst rihuela estival o the ear in the coupon

The San Antón Festival, in Orihuela, is the reason for the ONCE coupon on Wednesday, January 17. Five million coupons will spread these celebrations, in the first Oriolano festival of the year. Every January 17, San Antonio Abad , patron saint of animals, is commemorated through one of the most popular festivals in the Oriolano municipality that hosts the San Antón neighborhood, at the foot of the mountains, with views of the Orihuela Palmeral. During the celebration you can enjoy the traditional procession, parades, fair stands and popular games. In addition, a curious and outstanding event is the Charlatans Contest, which has a national character and values

the talent and the ‘wordiness’ with which the contestants present the characteristics to sell their products. Furthermore, following custom, a sow with her litter is raffled off, the proceeds of which go to social works. Likewise, after the mass celebrating the name day, the animals are blessed to protect them throughout the year from any harm or danger, as tradition dictates. Eva Lorente, director of the ONCE Agency in Orihuela, explained that “five million coupons have been put into circulation nationwide with a first prize of 500,000 euros for the number plus the series. These are coupons that enhance the festivity of the area and

that are important to publicize Orihuela at a national level. Another of the notable events is the one carried out by the Royal Order of San Antón which, on the occasion of the celebration of its patron’s day, presents its annual distinction to the people and institutions that stand out for their special contribution to the benefit of Orihuela. . For his part, Antonio Luis Galiano, master of the Royal Order of San Antón , has stressed that “we must remember the San Antón neighborhood all year round and those areas that need more help.” During the interventions at the ONCE coupon presentation event, attendees had a sign language interpreter.

he d in orrevie a launches ne courses and free professionalism certi cates The CdT in Torrevieja launches new courses and professional certificates, free of charge, starting in February such as basic training in food hygiene, winter cooking, typical Easter sweets, basic restaurant and bar operations and how to improve the customer experience in a tourist establishment. The CdT in Torrevieja is part of the Network of Tourism Centers of the Valencian Community (CdT) whose main purpose is to provide complete training for present and future professionals, since tourism is the sector that contributes the most wealth to the Spanish economy. . In the case of the Valencian Community, this importance is even greater if possible. However, at the same time it is a labor market in need of qualified personnel. The CdT Network offers, on the one hand, Continuing Training for different active professional profiles in the sector with the aim of improving their professional qualifications through short-term practical recycling courses that are also compatible with the professional schedule. On the other hand, Occupational Training is offered for the group of unemployed people, without knowledge of

the tourism sector, who intend to work in any of its areas with a more basic qualification. In this case they are longer courses, with theoretical teaching and also real practices. All these courses are taught by expert professionals who know, in detail, the needs of the tourism sector of the Valencian Community. And furthermore, in certain courses, upon completion, students who meet the required requirements will receive a certificate of professionalism. This certificate is official and is valid throughout Spain. Finally, the Online Training courses offered allow those people or professionals who wish to access training without schedules, flexible and that does not require travel. CdT of Torrevieja The Torrevieja Tourism Center, located on Crta Crevillente (CV90), esq. C/Los Lirios and opened in 2005, it has been training great professionals in the tourism sector for almost two decades. It was born with

the purpose of promoting specialized training in this sector so that the province consolidates its position as a benchmark in Spanish and international gastronomy. TV executives have said they would like to continue the show in honour of the late ambassador and volunteer, with Alison, 48, the current frontrunner. Quiron Hospital offers advice on self examination and breast health • Specialists recommend having your first mammogram at age forty • Tumours smaller than two centimetres have the highest cure rate On the occasion of International Breast Cancer Day, Dr. Joseba Rebollo, oncologist at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Oncology Platform, recommends that women usually perform a breast self-examination and go to the specialist doctor when they notice any abnormality, hardening, visible change, nipple-areola alterations, or axillary thickening. As detailed by Dr. Joseba Rebollo, “the breast does not have a uniform consistency and often has irregular nodules or thickenings, but it is a proven fact that the woman who self-examines is able to discern between a known nodule and one of new appearance that appears firmer and that causes a certain startle when noticing. Like I found out that wasn’t there before.”

Early diagnosis, key to curing breast cancer There are two keys to controlling the disease: improving a healthy lifestyle and detecting the tumour when it is still smaller than 1-2 cm in size. “In tumours smaller than 2 cm, the cure of the disease is almost universally achieved”, explains the oncologist from the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, “for

this reason, check-ups have proven to be effective in controlling mortality. In addition to regular health checkups using imaging techniques such as mammography, ultrasound or breast resonance, breast self-examination must also be performed frequently” The established clinical recommendation was to perform the first mammogram/ultrasound at the age of 40 as a baseline followup and then every two years until the age of 50. From this moment on, it is recommended to carry out annual check-ups until the age of 75. Although, as Dr. Rebollo adds, this recommendation is evolving and the age of initiation of controls is made earlier, at 30 years of age when there is a familial tumour burden, and continues during old age if there are risk factors and the patient is in good health.

Quirónsalud specialists in the study of the transcriptome for the treatment of cancer Thanks to the transcriptome, the specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja are able to study, in real time, the molecular characteristics of greatest relevance to the tumour at each moment of its evolution, what its strengths and weaknesses are, and thus administer to the patient a personalised treatment, appropriate to the characteristics of their own tumour. “For

example,” explains Dr. Manuel Sureda, an oncologist at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Oncology Platform, “it allows us to evaluate whether drugs whose activity in this tumour is doubtful continue to be active; whether it already expresses resistance pathways for drugs frequently administered in that type of tumour; It suggests the use of unusual drugs for which tumour cells show clear signs of sensitivity, etc. In short, it provides very complete information

on the characteristics of the tumour and, “in Oncology, information about the tumour is anti-tumour power”. One of the main advantages of the transcriptome is the ability to obtain information in real time, since tumours frequently change their characteristics in order to “survive” in the hostile environment posed by the body’s defences and the treatments administered. “For this reason, repeating the transcriptome after

tumour progression has proven to be a first-rate tool to be able to offer a personalised therapy with greater probabilities of efficacy,” says Dr. Sureda. The information generated by the transcriptome can be very useful in any type of tumour, “although it may be more relevant in locally advanced or metastatic tumours, due to the genetic complexity that these tumours reach in their evolution,” adds Dr. Sureda.

nion denounces lac o radiographers in rihuela health depart ent The CCOO Union Section of the Orihuela Health Department denounces “the apathy of the management of the hospital center in the face of the urgency of increasing the structural staff of radiodiagnosis technicians at the Vega Baja Hospital,” as stated in the statement that the union has issued. The text states that “since May 2023, the urgent need to increase the workforce of radiodiagnosis technicians has been transmitted to the Directorate and Management but no response has been obtained. These personnel carry a heavy workload, mainly

at night when they have to cover radiological emergencies. On that shift from Monday to Friday there is only one professional to attend to the hospital emergency service, radiological emergencies that arise in hospitalization or in the ICU and resuscitation services. “Personnel that is totally insufficient for a department, which also provides coverage to more than 168,000 inhabitants.” CCOO points out that “the situation has worsened in recent weeks with the rebound in respiratory infectious processes, the increase in hospital pressure falls directly

on the emergency services as the first gateway to specialized care and affects the activity of the service of radiodiagnosis. If the technicians in this specialty were already supporting an excessive workload due to their understaffing, the situation has worsened even more. The CCOO union section demands from Management that “this personnel deficit be remedied as a matter of urgency, and that reinforcement be provided in the seasons of greatest care pressure, which are cyclical and periodic, in the areas that are required.”

I am starting to doubt whether my Fiancé wants us to get married. It was he who proposed six months ago; however since then, he has put on weight and got a tattoo on his neck and part of his face. He knows I don’t like tattoos, but secretly had it done before I could object. He’s put on two stone in weight, and is drinking a lot more. We are constantly having to have his wedding suit altered. Now, we are four weeks away from the wedding, and he has had his head shaved; when I asked him to grow his hair back, he shaved it again. He disappeared for three days without contact - he’s never done anything like that before. When he came back, he had an earring and said he didn’t want to discuss the reason why he left. Whatever is going on with your Fiancé, he is trying to tell you something without actually having to be the one who pulls out of the wedding. The relationship looks like it’s in trouble. You are having doubts about his long term commitment. It would be unwise to steam ahead with wedding plans; perhaps you are worried he won’t actually turn up on the day? He’s done a disappearing act once already, and it would be awful to be left at the alter. In your shoes, I would say and see what he’s got to say about it. A future with to him that you think it’s best you cancel the marriage, someone so unreliable would be a mistake. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. Sometimes, usually when you least expect it, football takes you from the depths of despair to unexpected heights in the 90 odd minutes a game lasts. This, it has to be said, was one of those times. Big contingent of Monte fans, including our new found “ultras”, with drum, flags etc. High hopes for the three points against one of the sides chasing us at the top of the table. All was going well until the game started. Monte were sloppy and somewhat lethargic from the start, and, after 20 minutes we deservedly found ourselves 2-0 down and looking likely to concede at least one more. Enrique, our new signing from San Fulgencio, looked lively but we appeared to be out of sorts all over the pitch. But then hope. A long ball upfield, just before the half time break, evaded the Guardamar defence and Enrique outpaced them to slot past the home

keeper. Game on! The second half started with the travelling Monte fans expecting us to come out, control the game, score a couple more goals and bring the points back to Monte. Problem was, nobody informed Guardamar of that particular scenario. It must be said that the home side fought for everything and I can assure you that we lived through every emotion. Close shaves, good goalkeeping, poor finishing, great defending and the usual sprinkling of yellow cards. Even the home manager saw a red! And then, as if by magic, the game was all square when young Anderson worked his magic, left 3 defenders on their backside whilst, according to the referee, the 4th defender brought him down in the penalty area. Up stepped second half substitute Damian to calmly slot home. 2-2 and 5 minutes to go. The game appeared to be heading

for a draw when, deep into injury time, Enrique somehow managed to get into the Guardamar area and slot home through a forest of defenders. Cue crazy celebrations from our players and supporters (Gocu somehow ended up in the stand hugging our fans), and wild, angry protestations by the home players who felt a foul had been committed in the lead up to our winning goal. 2 home players red carded, 4 minutes extra to calm the home players and still time for another mild heart attack for us in the stands. The celebrations at the end between players and supporters were amazing. Those that couldn’t make it missed something special. The win ensured we stay top for at least another week. We now have 2 home games, starting with our nearest and dearest San Miguel next week. Match report by Eddie Cagigao. Celebration pic Marco Ferrandez.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 9th of January we fished the 2nd round of the abbey angling cup at El Bosquet. The weather was quite fair with a gentle breeze and the match was fished under intermittent cloud cover. It is fair to say that the complex has not been fishing at its best in recent months and we have tried various things to try and improve the fishing in the matches. This week with seventeen anglers in attendence it was decided that we would fish pegs A1 to 7 and 8 to 16. I myself have often refused to include pegs 8 to 16 in matches as I feared that the steps on the pegs and the poor state of the platforms may lead to an

unfortunate accident. The owners have in recent weeks made several repairs to the platforms and raised them by about 30cm and as such, and given that no pleasure anglers were on site,it was decided that they would be included. I am sorry to say that in the forthcoming Tuesday and Wednesday matches they will not be included on safety grounds. I will clarify why later in this post. Regarding the competition Neil McBernie was the runaway winner with a truly outstanding weight of 45.46kg from peg 13. Neil fished 3 or 4 maggots on the hook on the pole on the far bank to take some quality carp. In second place was Richard Smith, drawn on peg B1 he fished the pole with maggots for 13.96kg.

In third place was Harry Billing on peg 9. Harry fished bread or maggots to catch carp on the pole for 11.74kg. Back to the section 8 to 16. Most of our anglers are over 60 years of age with some over 80 and this section consists of a raised car track with steps down to each peg. Due to the nature of the venue these steps can for some, be difficult to negotiate and often become slippy. One angler who shall remain nameless whilst trying to negotiate the steps lost his footing resulting in his knee collapsing. The angler duly fell onto his 14m pole section smashing it to pieces, he also broke his landing net handle, a top two section and was exetremly lucky that he did not suffer a serious injury or worse still fall into
