Dangerous fugitive arrested in Rojales National Police Officers have successfully apprehended a highly dangerous fugitive in Rojales, bringing an end to a pursuit that spanned multiple European countries. The individual in question had two European Arrest Warrants issued against him, originating from Belgium and the Netherlands. Spanish authorities had

also issued four national searches for his capture, according to sources from the police. The investigation, which commenced at the start of 2022, initially focused on the province of Malaga. However, after a series of inquiries, law enforcement agents determined that the fugitive was not present in that area. Subsequently,

following the General Assembly of the European Network of Active Fugitive Search Teams (Enfast) held in Spain last October, coordination efforts between officials from Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands were intensified, leading to increased operational information exchange. The suspect had displayed a pattern of frequently changing residences across various regions in Spain, employing these moves as tactics to elude justice and sustain his illicit activities. Authorities believed that after each criminal act, the fugitive returned to his family environment, prompting efforts to pinpoint his family’s location. Through relentless information gathering, law enforcement agents successfully identified that the fugitive was residing in a municipality near Torrevieja, ultimately tracing him to a luxurious urbanisation in Rojales, where he lived with his family and was subsequently arrested. European authorities considered him highly

violent and dangerous. The European Arrest Warrant issued by Dutch authorities pertained to drug trafficking crimes, while the warrant from Belgian authorities encompassed charges of drug trafficking, kidnapping, criminal injuries, and property crimes. The detained individual was allegedly associated with a criminal organization operating throughout Europe, linked to the notorious N’Drangheta mafia. Notably, he had previously been sentenced to seven years in prison in 2016 for kidnapping in Belgium, further establishing his dangerous profile due to his involvement with firearms. In addition to the European Arrest Warrants, the fugitive faced four national searches issued by Spanish authorities related to crimes involving drug trafficking and document falsification. The successful collaboration between European nations highlights the effectiveness of international cooperation in bringing criminals to justice, safeguarding communities from

individuals with a history of violent and organised criminal activities.

Christmas Eve Miracle: quickthinking saves choking baby’s life In a heartwarming turn of events on Christmas Eve, the quick actions of relatives and the guidance provided by a nurse from the CICU (Emergency Information and Coordination Centre) proved instrumental in saving the life of a two-month-old baby in Orihuela Costa. The dramatic rescue unfolded when the family made an emergency call to the CICU at 11pm, seeking help for their infant daughter experiencing a cardiorespiratory arrest. The distressing situation occurred as the baby choked while drinking milk at their Orihuela Costa residence. Nurse Marta Martínez, from the CICU, heroically stepped in, providing lifesaving instructions over the phone to the panicked family. The nurse guided them through a series of exercises, enabling the family to successfully resuscitate the infant from the cardiorespiratory arrest. The CICU promptly mobilised a SAMU ambulance, but with Nurse Martínez’s

continuous instructions, the family decided to transport the baby to Torrevieja Hospital in their car, as it was located just a short distance away. The SAMU ambulance was stood down as the nurse guided the family throughout the journey. Remarkably, by the time the family reached the hospital, having completed several cycles of resuscitation manoeuvres, the baby began crying—a sign of regained consciousness. Nurse Martínez remained on the phone until the family entered the hospital’s accident and emergency department. Hospital staff quickly attended to the baby, who, after a thorough examination, was declared in good health and joyfully discharged. The family expressed gratitude for the life-saving instructions provided by Nurse Martínez, describing the experience as the worst of their lives. Nurse Marta Martínez shared her relief and excitement upon hearing that the baby was breathing and conscious. She

explained that she had guided the family through crucial steps, including “five mouth-to-mouth ventilations,” applying gentle chest pressure, and maintaining a cycle of compressions and ventilations. The CICU emphasised the importance of their telephone protocol used during emergency calls, ensuring that coordinated medical instructions are delivered promptly, especially in the critical initial minutes of a cardiac arrest. Reflecting on the incident, the family conveyed their deep gratitude for the instructions and resuscitation guidance. The CICU highlighted the accessibility of a dedicated advice section on the Health Emergency Service of the Valencian Community website, offering valuable information that anyone can consult at any time. This Christmas Eve miracle serves as a poignant reminder of the impact quick thinking and coordinated efforts can have in saving precious lives.

Sánchez and Feijóo Charges filed over deadly Murcia seek EU mediation nightclub fire to settle stalemate In an effort to break the years-long deadlock over appointments to Spain’s judicial body, the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo have jointly agreed to involve the European Commission as a mediator. The CGPJ, responsible for overseeing Spain’s judges and courts, is traditionally renewed every five years. However, since 2018, the current group has been functioning on an interim basis due to the inability of the People’s Party (PP) and the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) to reach an agreement on its composition. The prolonged impasse has hindered the appointment of new judges to higher courts, resulting in numerous vacancies following the retirement of judges that remain unfilled. Government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria announced the agreement at a press conference following the meeting between Prime Minister Sánchez and Feijóo. Alegria stated, “We have agreed on a formula for the European Commission to mediate,” expressing optimism about restoring institutional normality to the judicial body.

The European Commission has consistently voiced concerns over Spain’s failure to resolve the CGPJ stalemate in recent years. Feijóo, in a separate news conference, revealed that Sánchez had consented to allowing the European Commission to “supervise” negotiations surrounding the CGPJ’s renewal. This meeting marked the first encounter between the Prime Minister and Feijóo since Sánchez’s reappointment to another term in November, securing the support of smaller left-wing and regional parties. The PP, which won the most seats in the July election, fell short of a majority, and Feijóo was unsuccessful in obtaining backing from other parties for his investiture vote in September. Comprising 20 members, the CGPJ holds a supervisory role and appoints certain magistrates to key judicial bodies such as the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court. The appointment of 12 of the 20 members requires a qualified majority of threefifths in both houses of the Spanish Parliament. The decision to involve the European Commission signals a commitment to finding a resolution and restoring stability to Spain’s judiciary.

Six individuals have been charged in Spain in connection with a manslaughter investigation related to a tragic fire that claimed the lives of 13 people inside a nightclub in Murcia in October, according to a statement from the Murcia court. The fatal incident, marking Spain’s deadliest nightclub fire in three decades, unfolded at the Fonda Milagros club in the early hours of 1st October. The fire quickly spread to a neighbouring venue called Teatre as patrons desperately attempted to flee the engulfed premises. Among those facing charges are identified as “the managers and administrators” of both the Fonda Milagros and Teatre nightclubs, as

stated by the Murcia court leading the investigation. Additionally, the owner of a cold spark machine, a special effects device that produces sparks without heat or flame, used at Teatre on the night of the fire, has also been charged. While the court did not specify the suspected role of the machine, it has ordered a thorough examination of it. Nine individuals who sustained injuries from flames or smoke during the incident have been summoned to testify as witnesses, the court disclosed. Prosecutors have emphasised that if negligence or inadequate safety measures are determined to be the cause of the deaths, those found responsible could potentially face up to

1021 977

nine years in prison. All 13 fatalities occurred within the Fonda Milagros establishment. Many of the victims suffered severe burns, requiring authorities to request DNA samples from their relatives for identification purposes. The Murcia City Council revealed that the Fonda Milagros nightclub had been issued an order to shut down in October 2022 due to a lack of a proper license, but it continued to operate. In response, the nightclub managers asserted that their paperwork was in order. The unfolding investigation is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and the accountability of those charged in connection with the deadly nightclub fire.

Migrant boat intercepted in Torrevieja The Civil Guard has intercepted thirteen occupants, of North African origin, of a boat that arrived around 5pm one afternoon last week on the coast of Torrevieja. The boat, built of wood and propelled by a low-power engine, arrived at the well-known Los Locos beach, leaving the numerous passersby who, at that time, were walking around the area enjoying the last lights of the day, speechless. Despite the journey, the immigrants appear to be in good health. The Red Cross immediately mobilised a specialised emergency team to provide first assistance to these people who arrived by sea and whose nationality is

still unknown. The arrival of this boat highlights the complexity and persistence of the migratory phenomenon, which does not let up even during these Christmas periods. The authorities continue to work on processing these types of situations, while society once again

faces the harsh reality of those who seek a different future through dangerous sea crossings.

Quirónsalud Torrevieja in Top 5 Spain to double VAT rates on domestic electricity bills in New Year hospitals in the Valencian Community In a significant policy shift, Spain will witness a doubling of Value Added Tax (VAT) rates on domestic electricity bills in the upcoming year, soaring from the current 5% to 10%. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced this decision following a Council of Ministers meeting, where discussions centred on renewing or modifying measures initially implemented to combat inflation and the repercussions of the conflict in Ukraine. The VAT increase specifically applies to electricity bills and is set to take effect in the New Year. Notably, this adjustment revises the initial 21% rate, which was slashed to 5% in July 2021. The newly established 10% VAT rate will be applicable until the end of June next year. During a news conference, Prime Minister Sanchez emphasised the substantial fluctuations in electricity costs over the past 22 months. He highlighted the notable reduction in the price per megawatt, from €360 per hour on the eve of the invasion of Ukraine to €51.80 last Friday. As part of the government’s broader economic strategy, Sanchez disclosed the decision to gradually withdraw tax reductions on electricity and gas over the next six months. The restoration of VAT on gas is

anticipated in February, “once the winter is over,” Sanchez noted. However, basic foods such as bread, flour, milk, cheese, and eggs will continue to enjoy the abolition of VAT over the same time frame. Additionally, a reduction in VAT on oils and pasta from 10% to 5% will be maintained for an extra six months. The government plans to extend the suspension of evictions from main homes for vulnerable individuals and families. Aid to public transport will persist for another year, ensuring the continuation of certain Renfe train services. The windfall tax imposed on banks and energy companies, introduced in 2022, will also be maintained for an additional

year, generating €2.9 billion in revenue, according to the Ministry of Finance. Furthermore, the government will eliminate cash withdrawal charges for the elderly and disabled at bank counters. Reflecting on the political landscape, Prime Minister Sanchez referred to the July election and subsequent November investiture, describing the past year as one marked by a choice between a government influenced by the far right or one focused on progressive social advances. Sanchez reaffirmed his government’s commitment to dialogue, pledging to continue engaging with all stakeholders, a practice maintained over the past five years.

Professional thief poses as Road redevelopment tourist to rob hotel guests continues in Torrevieja In a crime spree targeting hotel guests in the heart of Alicante, a seasoned thief, disguised as a tourist, was recently caught by the long arm of the law. The 50-year-old culprit, a Moroccan national, has amassed an astonishing 100 arrests, with a staggering 70 of them related to theft, spanning various regions across Spain. The Policia Nacional has labelled the apprehended individual a “professional criminal” due to his extensive criminal record. During his latest wave of illicit activities, the suspect accumulated nine additional charges of theft, contributing to an already extensive rap sheet. Authorities revealed that the cunning thief adopted the guise of a tourist to outsmart both hotel staff and law enforcement. At the time of his arrest, officers discovered an assortment of incriminating items in his possession, including hats and sunglasses, strategically chosen to enhance his camouflage as a holidaymaker. The thief’s most recent capture occurred when he brazenly snatched a bag from a hotel cafeteria. However, a vigilant staff member intervened, detaining the suspect until officers arrived. Despite lacking

any identification papers, investigators swiftly connected the dots, linking him to a series of thefts at various Alicante hotels by scrutinising security camera footage. The thief exhibited a meticulous modus operandi, often striking during bustling periods of the day. His loot included bags, high-end mobile phones, sunglasses, eyeglasses, cash, documents, and sets of keys, demonstrating a preference for valuables that he could easily carry away. Security videos revealed the thief’s calm and natural demeanour, as he entered hotels and casually greeted unfamiliar

staff members, projecting an air of confidence to avoid suspicion. His choice of targets primarily revolved around tourists engaged in leisurely activities such as dining or shopping moments when their guard was likely to be down. The police underscored the significant impact of the thief’s actions, emphasizing that the harm caused extended beyond the monetary value of stolen items. Key travel documents, such as passports, were frequently among the pilfered belongings, leading to substantial practical challenges for affected tourists upon their return home.

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Infrastructure and Urban Management, Sandra Sanchez, and the Councillor for Parks and Gardens and Street Lighting, Concha Sala, along with municipal technicians, have visited the redevelopment works of one of the main roads of the city, Ronda César Cánovas Girada, which began last December 18. The works are included in the project for resurfacing and improvements to pedestrian routes and accessibility, which includes an exclusive chapter for the Ronda César Cánovas Redevelopment works, with an investment of around 770,000€ (VAT included). The works will take approximately four and a half months to complete. The redevelopment will consist of maintaining the width of the pavements, given that it is adequate in terms of accessibility, as well as maintaining the two lanes of traffic, one in each direction, and the parking strips. PAVING AND ACCESSIBILITY Sandra Sánchez indicated that the pavements will be

in accordance with current regulations, and posts and luminaires will be replaced using LED technology to contribute to energy savings.

completely demolished, replacing the existing kerbing on both pavements and the median, as well as the paving, improving the pedestrian itinerary. Fifteen curb reductions will be made at pedestrian crossings and 4 spaces for reduced mobility will be provided, thus improving accessibility from Calle Villa Madrid to Calle Orihuela. In addition, benches and litter bins will be installed at various points. The works will include the resurfacing of the entire road, after milling, and new vertical and horizontal traffic signs will be installed. STREET LIGHTING For her part, Councillor Concha Sala reported that the existing street lighting will be completely renovated, with new channelling to the depth

EXISTING TREES The councillor for Parks and Gardens also pointed out that one of the major problems along the road has been caused for years by the roots of the existing trees, affecting both the pavement of the pavements and the asphalt layer for vehicle traffic. The solution adopted and coordinated with the area of Parks and Gardens has been to completely demolish the pavements and inspect the state of the roots that could continue to affect them in the future. The trees will be transplanted, or if transplanting is not viable, new trees will be planted at a rate of 5 saps per unit of tree removed, with the rest of the saps being replaced on the road itself, and the rest in municipal parks. As part of the actions planned for the works, the location and number of existing tree wells for the roadside trees will be maintained and a new drip irrigation network will be installed.

Thanksgiving for our Christmas and a look ahead to 2024 Father Richard A. Seabrook SSC, the priest at Ss Peter and Paul, Torrevieja, writes to report on Christmas in his church community and look forward to 2024: “Each Christmas is a celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ and each year it brings many blessings. We gave people an opportunity to fill shoeboxes of gifts for children that are helped by Mission Possible in Torrevieja and it was tremendous that we received around fifty boxes to give to the children at Epiphany. The generosity of people was really wonderful. Lago Jardín Church, opposite the Dña Monse Hotel, was open for a Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve and the church was full with many different nationalities sharing in the celebration. La Siesta Ecumenical Church on Calle Granados had a peaceful Midnight Mass and we welcomed lots of people on Christmas Day morning. In the lead up to Christmas we had a Christmas Quiz and dinner in San Miguel de Salinas, a Nine Lessons and Carols Service at La Siesta, a Christmas lunch at La Marina Bar and a really well attended hour of carol singing outside Lago Jardín Church. It has been a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of Christ in

Bethlehem. Therefore, through this initiative, measures must be specifically developed to adapt to the risk of flooding of assets owned by irrigation communities, water courts, irrigation unions or other irrigation entities and owners of livestock farms. The total amount of the subsidy amounts to 2.5 million

euros, distributed in 2.2 million euros for the irrigation communities, water courts and irrigation unions and 300,000 euros for the owners of livestock farms. This amount may be increased by another 2.5 million euros. In this sense, actions to adapt and reduce the risk of flooding of vulnerable facilities of irrigation communities, water courts, irrigation unions and other irrigation entities will be eligible for subsidies, such as, for example, pumping stations, electrical panels and transformers, filtering stations and ponds. The transfer to other locations of some of the facilities, actions with linear hydraulic infrastructures of irrigation entities, both irrigation channels and irrigation channels, that aim

to increase hydraulic capacity and other actions to adapt to the risk of flooding may also be eligible for subsidy, including the implementation of measures identified in flood risk management plans and other regional or municipal action plans against floods. In addition, for owners of livestock farms, assistance will also be provided with the installation of elements that allow livestock farms to be adapted and protected against the risk of flooding, such as: temporary accommodation for animals, permanent or temporary sheepfolds, construction of access ramps, anti-flood barriers, raising the floor of warehouses and protecting equipment or facilities and sealing and waterproofing of exterior walls. The call can be consulted in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat and the deadline for submitting applications will be three months from January 15, 2024. A technical project must be presented with a detailed description of the planned actions.

Molino del Agua restoration continues in Torrrvieja

The Councillor for the Environment of the City of Torrevieja, Antonio Vidal, reports that throughout the year 2023, the Association of Naturalists Southeast (ANSE), with the support of the City of Torrevieja and with funding from the organic products company Naturgreen, has carried out various works focused on the continued recovery of coastal juniper and juniper habitats in the Municipal Natural Park of Molino del Agua in Torrevieja.

Recently, ANSE has planted a total of 100 specimens of dune junipers (Juniperus turbinata), and 50 specimens of maritime junipers (Juniperus macrocarpa) and many other species typical of dunes in the Natural Park of Molino de Agua in Torrevieja. On the other hand, this year has also seen the removal of invasive exotic species in the area, such as the cat’s claw (Carpobrotus spp.) and the pythera (Agave spp.). The aim of this type of action

is to recover the dune forests, a formation that is practically extinct in Europe. In fact, the maritime juniper and the dune juniper had become extinct in the south of the province of Alicante, with only a few specimens remaining in the north of the province of Alicante and in the El Saler meadow (Valencia). For its part, the dune juniper had been relegated to the Regional Park of Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, in the neighbouring Region of Murcia.

Benejuzar Town Hall modernises Las Palmeras Industrial Estate The Benejúzar Town Council has undertaken several improvements in the Las Palmeras Industrial Estate with the aim of modernising it and providing it with infrastructure and services. The works have been subsidised by the Instituto Valenciano de Competitividad Empresarial (IVACE). The budget for the works amounts to 99,1036.49 euros and the grant awarded was 78,196.76 euros. The Mayor of Benejúzar, Vicente Cases, explained that “this is much needed work as we have provided the industrial estate with greater security, as well as improved mobility and signposting”. In this sense, among the actions that have been carried out is the installation of four surveillance cameras and the connection with the Local Police of the main entrances to the industrial estate. In each area, a video surveillance camera will be installed with the capacity to read number plates and a general vision camera. On the other hand, 6 antitheft bicycle racks have also been installed in various areas so that they can be used

by all the industrial estate’s warehouses. In terms of mobility, the road surface of several streets has also been rehabilitated, including Calle Ingeniero Larramendi, one of the main streets in the industrial estate. The streets to be worked on are Calle Ingeniero Larramendi, where milling and resurfacing work will be carried out, and Calle Algarrobo, where the entire road surface will be rebuilt. In addition, work has also been carried out to repaint the horizontal and vertical

traffic signs. Finally, the council has improved the sewage system with the reinforcement of the rainwater drainage system. The aim is to relieve the sewage network of the industrial estate to prevent it from malfunctioning during storm events. The mayor assured that with this action “what we are aiming to do is to optimise the operation of the wastewater drainage system in the industrial estate and minimise runoff in the streets”.

Vega Baja to save 45 million cubic metres of water with irrigation improvements The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Luis Aguirre , has announced that at the beginning of 2024 the works to condition and improve the hydraulic irrigation infrastructure will begin in the municipalities of San Fulgencio , Catral and Orihuela , which have an amount of 4,164,310.94 euros. The councilor has highlighted the work that will be carried out to make the irrigation of 22,705 irrigators in an agricultural area of 27,110 hectares more efficient and that will prevent water losses of around 45 million cubic meters per year and which will revert to the crops themselves. In this regard, Aguirre added that “although the Valencian Community has one of the most efficient irrigation systems in the world, the weather conditions force us to make the maximum use of water and to do so the Department will always be at the side of the irrigators.” The entities subject to the irrigation improvements are: the General Irrigation Community of Levante Margen Izquierda and the Private Water Court of Orihuela. Specifically, these are the Left Bank in the municipality of San Fulgencio, the Acequia de la Partition in the town of Catral and the Acequia de Alquible in Orihuela.

In detail, in the Main Canal and First Elevation of Riegos de Levante , the works consist of its channeling and covering, the installation of automatic roughing grates cleaners and the conditioning of the pumping installation of the first elevation. In the Partition Acequia, the slab and the crowning of the walls and their interior cladding will be raised. In addition, with respect to the Acequia de Alquibla , the construction of a passage work of about 24 meters in length

will be carried out, to replace the existing reinforced concrete passage in very poor condition, and the reconstruction of 37 meters of the canal of the acequia , upstream and downstream of the new step. Likewise, these works are part of the action that the Ministry is carrying out to repair the damage to the irrigation systems affected by the 2019 DANA in Vega Baja (Plan Vega Renhace), of which more than 25 have been carried out. millions of euros.

Ten fun New Year’s facts & traditions The first New Year’s celebration dates back 4,000 years. Julius Caesar, the emperor of Rome, was the first to declare Jan. 1 a national holiday. He named the month after Janus, the Roman god of doors and gates. Janus had two faces, one looking forward and one looking back. Caesar felt that a month named after this god would be fitting. Forty-five percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. The top resolutions are: to lose weight, get organized, to spend less and save more, to stay fit and healthy, and to quit smoking. While nearly half of all Americans make resolutions, 25 percent of them give up on their resolutions by the second week of January. Be sure to eat leafy greens on New Year’s. Tradition says that the more leafy greens a person eats, the more prosperity he or she will experience (what an incentive for staying healthy!). Tradition also says that legumes bring prosperity because beans and peas look like coins. No wonder why so many people eat black eyed peas on Jan. 1. Many people ring in New Year’s by popping open a bottle of champagne. Americans drink close to 360 million glasses of sparkling wine during this time. The bubbly stuff dates back to the 17th century, when the cork was invented. About 1 million people gather in New York City’s Times Square to watch the ball drop. The Times Square New Year’s Eve ball drop came about because of a ban on fireworks. The first

ball in 1907 was 700 pounds and was lit with 100 25-watt lights. The current ball puts the old one to shame (thanks to technology). Today, it is covered in 2,688 crystals, is lit by 32,000 LED lights, weighs 11,875 pounds and is 12 feet in diameter. Remember the last scene in When Harry Met Sally, when Harry references a song after he and Sally kiss? It wasAuld Lang Syne, a song traditionally sung at the end of New Year’s parties. Poet Robert Burns wrote it in 1788. Though most people do not know the words to Auld Lang Syne, the overall message is that people have to remember their loved ones, dead or alive, and keep them close in their hearts. If Santa is the most common symbol associated with Christmas, then Baby New Year is the symbol most commonly associated with….you guessed it, New Year’s! Baby New Year is often seen in a diaper, black top hat, and a sash showing the numbers of the new year. Myth states that he matures into an old man during the year. Make sure to be surrounded by family or loved ones on New Year’s Eve. The first person you come across in the new year could set the tone for the next 12 months. This applies to couples, as well. If a couple celebrating New Year’s together does not kiss, the future of the relationship might be splitsville, so be sure to lay one on your significant other. At the Mummers Parade in Philadelphia, 10,000 participants step through City Hall and perform in unique costumes. The parade dates back

to mid-17th-century, incorporating elements from Irish, German, English, Swedish and other European heritages. The parade itself is divided into five divisions: a comic division, wench brigades, fancy division, string bands,

and fancy bridges. If you are in the area for New Year’s, be sure to check out this event. According to statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day

more than any other holiday. Don’t think your old car is safe, either. In 2011, the 1994 Honda Accord was the most stolen car. To discourage car theft, make sure your car is in a populated area and always take your keys.

El Gordo winners in Torrevieja and across the Vega Baja “El Gordo” from the Extraordinary Christmas Draw has fallen in Torrevieja with 400,000 euros for the tenth. 88008 is the number awarded the First Prize of this popular and important Extraordinary Draw every December 22. The “El Conejo de Oro” administration, located in the Carrefour shopping center in Torrevieja, has been in charge of distributing this prize in the salt city, in addition to two Fifth Prizes, those corresponding to numbers 86007 and 01568, endowed with 6,000 euros the tenth. Daniel Zapata runs this administration that last year also sold ‘El Gordo’ but, in addition, it is a very good luck establishment because in the 2021 draw he distributed the Fourth Prize, and in the Lotería del Niño, he sold the Second Prize. Luck in the Vega Baja region with the Christmas Lottery jumped at 09:53 a.m. this Friday and it did so with the second Fifth Prize, number 45353. The Administration of Calle Mayor de Pilar de la Horadada and the administration of Avenida del Carmen de Cox have shared luck with this fifth prize. From there, the fifth prizes have spread “pinches” from the Christmas

Lottery to the municipalities, in addition to Pilar de la Horadada, Cox and Torrevieja, to Orihuela and Algorfa. At 10:10 a.m., the Fifth Prize 88979, spread joy among those who bought their ticket at the administrations on Fragata Street and Joaquín Chapaprieta Street in Torrevieja and in Orihuela at the administration on Obispo Rocamora Street, in the La Zenia Shopping Center. Boulevard (administration that last year distributed the Fourth Prize) and at the point on the Torrevieja-Carta Km.6 highway. It was also sold by the Administration on Calle Mayor de Pilar de la Horadada, which had distributed another Fifth Prize a while before. With three minutes left until 11 in the morning, the Fifth Prize 86007 raised a toast again to Orihuela, Torrevieja and, on this occasion, to Algorfa. This number has been sold at the administration on Alfonso XIII and Francisco Tormo de Haro streets in Orihuela; in the administration of Calle Mayor de Algorfa and in Torrevieja, again in “El Conejo de Oro” in the Carrefour center and in the administration of Calle Orihuela, 13.

fire devastates a ho e in an Bartolo

In an effective and coordinated intervention, the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium managed to control a raging fire that completely consumed a singlefamily house in the Zanja 4 neighborhood, in the Oriola district of San Bartolomé. The incident, reported at 9:28 p.m., was controlled in record time, ending the intervention at 11:58 p.m.

The house, whose wooden roof collapsed during the fire, suffered significant material damage. Fortunately, the English couple who occupied the residence were able to evacuate in time, and no injuries were reported in the emergency. The firefighters deployed an outstanding operation, using a command unit (UMJ), a heavy rural pump (BRP), and a ladder vehicle with a sergeant,

a corporal and six firefighters from the Orihuela park. The team’s quick and efficient work prevented the flames from spreading to adjacent areas, limiting damage to the affected home. Despite the magnitude of the fire, no injuries or victims were reported, highlighting the professionalism and skill of the firefighters in managing the emergency.

Man sentenced to onths or drug dealing during loc do n

The Provincial Court of Alicante based in Elche sentences an individual, with no criminal record, to one year and six months in prison for his participation in a crime against public health such as drug trafficking. The event, which occurred on March 18, 2020 in Orihuela, took place in full confinement due to the COVID-19 health emergency. Around 11:00 p.m. that day, three agents from the Torrevieja Civil Guard arrested

the accused at his home. Prior to his arrest, officers observed from a police vehicle how the individual left his home and carried out a drug transaction with the driver of another car. The delivered package, later analyzed, contained 0.45 grams of cocaine. The police intervention was carried out within the framework of a citizen security service, where plainclothes officers followed the vehicle to the accused’s home, motivated

by night traffic not permitted during the state of alarm. The court, when issuing the sentence, considered the accused responsible as the author of a crime against public health, without the presence of circumstances modifying criminal responsibility. The sentence imposed, of one year and six months in prison, reflects the seriousness of the crime committed during a critical period for Spanish society such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Group meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 10:00 to 12:00. Next meeting is on Wednesday 10th January 2024. You are welcome to attend. “How can I play video content from my phone on my TV?” Dependent on your TV your options are: • Screen Mirroring • Casting Some TV’s have “Screen Mirroring”

as an Input. Download and install a Screen Mirroring App. Open the screen Mirroring App after you have selected the Screen Mirroring input. Whatever you select on the phone is now being displayed on the TV. The downside is that you cannot use your phone for anything else while viewing the selected content from your phone. Provided the TV has a spare HDMI input socket you can use a Chromecast dongle. The Chromecast connects to an HDMI socket and is powered by a USB connection. On your mobile device (Phone or Tablet) download and install Google Home App. In the Google Home App give your Chromecast a name e.g. Lounge TV. Select your video content App and “Caste” to the Chromecast named earlier. The advantage of this option is that you can continue to use all of your mobile devices functions while your video content is playing on your TV. “How do I install Apps on my computer not from Microsoft Store?” To help protect your PC and keep it running smoothly, Microsoft recommends only installing apps from the Microsoft Store. You can choose where you can get apps

from and if you want to see app recommendations when you try to install an app from outside of the Microsoft Store. Windows 10 1. Select Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features. 2. Under Installing apps, select one of the available options. To stop seeing app recommendations, select either Allow apps from anywhere or Turn off app recommendations (options vary by Windows version). Windows 11 1. Select Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features. 2. Next to Choose where to get apps, select one of the available options. To see recommendations, select Anywhere, but let me know if there’s a comparable app in the Microsoft Store. To stop seeing app recommendations, select Anywhere. Note: You can also be warned if you are about to install a nonMicrosoft Store app without receiving a recommendation by selecting Anywhere, but warn me before installing an app that’s not from the Microsoft Store, or restrict yourself only to apps from the Microsoft Store by selecting The Microsoft Store only (Recommended). ecsavers ticas and otary uarda ar collecting or the ed Cross In December and January, Rotary Guardamar and Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia are working together to collect cleaning products, toiletries and baby care products for the Red Cross Guardamar. There is a large demand at present for these products and so these two organizations are joining forces to maximise the amount collected. The director of these three Specsavers Ópticas stores, Francisco Jurado, was proud to be elected as President of Rotary Club Guardamar and is strengthening the synergy between the club and his stores to support the community as much as he can. He explains, ‘We are delighted to launch this collection campaign for the Red Cross in Guardamar, an excellent charity, that we have supported many times in the past. The charity contacted us to say that they had a shortage of baby care products, cleaning products and toiletries and asked for support. The campaign is running until the end of January 2024 and we need all the help people can give us. Unfortunately, many people in our community are struggling

with the increasing cost of food and basic supplies and so the demand has significantly grown. If customers and local residents can add a few items to their weekly shop and drop them into their nearest store, it would make an enormous difference to families who are really struggling.’ Rotary International is an international organization and service club whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders. Rotary Guardamar work tirelessly to support worthy causes with large events such as the recent Christmas Golf Championship supporting the end of Polio and the Classic Car Rally in the summer which raised funds for the book bank at the high school IES Les Dunes. Specsavers Ópticas are the largest private optical brand in the world, dedicating to providing quality eye care at affordable prices and free comprehensive eye tests to protect the eye health of people in their community. There are six stores on the Costa Blanca. To find your nearest store and take part in the Christmas collection campaigns being organized by the different stores, visit www.specsavers.es

The hosts joked that there were ‘a lot of accountants around the studio looking even greyer than normal’ when a pair competing on the new series climbed the Limitless Ladder to earn the seven-figure sum. Limitless Win sees pairs answer questions in exchange for lives before taking on a money ladder that never ends, giving them the chance to win the biggest jackpot on TV. And I’m A Celeb presenters Ant and Dec say the show’s third season sees contestants bring their A game and win big, to the thrill of the duo, who couldn’t hold back their excitement during filming. Dec revealed that the most shocking point of the series was witnessing Ant jump onto the desk and nearly break it, a moment that got the host in hot water with bosses.

career’ on the latest episode of the BBC show. One guest hoped that expert Louise Drover could restore her dad’s heavily laminated 1970s medical certificate. Sidra revealed she wanted the special document framed, following her father’s death, caused by coronavirus Looking at the item, Louise explained: ‘This laminated document is quite possibly the worst I’ve seen in my entire 30-year career. It’s got three laminations to it and two layers of what appears to be a very thin cellophane. ‘On lifting quite nicely, one still very firmly attached. I’m not sure how that one’s coming off yet and then this very thick crunchy one on the outside.

i s or reventing alls in seniors

Falls are a common health problem among older people and can have serious consequences. The traumatology specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja explain how to deal with these incidents with our relatives. Risk Factors for Falls in Older Adults There are multiple factors that contribute to the high frequency of falls, including: Intrinsic or person-related factors: • Older age: The older a person is, the greater the risk of falling. • Previous history of falls: Those who have suffered previous falls are at a higher risk of falling again. • Muscle weakness and loss of balance: Decreased muscle strength and the ability to maintain balance increase the propensity for falls. • Vision problems: Poor vision, eye disorders, and untreated eye diseases increase the risk of falls. • Hearing problems: Hearing loss can affect the ability to detect and respond to auditory warning cues in the environment. Factors related to diseases and health conditions: • Chronic diseases. • Use of medications. • Environmental factors: -Obstacles in the environment: Loose carpeting, loose wires, poorly placed furniture, and other obstacles in the home increase the risk of trips and falls. Slippery floors: Slippery surfaces in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas without proper safety measures can increase the risk of falls. Inadequate lighting: Poor or uneven lighting makes it difficult to perceive obstacles and can lead to falls. • Lifestyles & Behaviours:

Lack of physical activity: Inactivity can lead to muscle weakness, impaired balance, and decreased mobility, increasing the risk of falls. Alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol consumption can affect balance and coordination, increasing the risk of falls. It is important to note that these risk factors do not act in isolation, but often interact and enhance each other. “Identifying and addressing these risk factors can be essential to prevent falls in older people and promote healthy aging,” explain the experts at Quirónsalud Torrevieja. How can falls be prevented in older people? Preventing falls in seniors is a crucial approach to maintaining their health, safety, and quality of life. Quirónsalud specialists recommend some effective strategies to prevent falls: -Regular physical activity: Promoting an active lifestyle and performing exercises that improve balance, muscle strength, and flexibility can significantly reduce the risk of falls. Activities such as walking, tai chi, yoga, or strengthening exercises are beneficial. It is recommended that seniors consult with a healthcare professional before beginning any exercise program. -Medication review and adjustment: It is important for older adults to review their medications regularly with their doctor or pharmacist, as certain medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or imbalance, increasing the risk of falls. The dose may need to be adjusted or the medication changed if necessary. -Assessment and improvement of the home environment: It is critical that the home environment is safe and accessible. -Regular vision and hearing tests: Maintaining good visual and hearing

health is essential for spotting obstacles and warning signs in the environment. Have regular eye and hearing exams and wear appropriate glasses or hearing aids if needed. -Proper use of mobility aids: If the use of canes, walkers, or other mobility aids is required, it is important that they are properly adjusted and used correctly. -Proper diet and nutrition: Maintaining a balanced and adequate diet can contribute to bone and muscle health, helping to prevent falls. Make sure you have an adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients. -Education and awareness: Providing information to seniors about fall risk factors, preventative measures, and strategies to stay safe can help increase awareness and encourage safe behaviours. What are the consequences of falls in older adults? Falls in older adults can have a variety of consequences that affect both physical health and quality of life, including: -Physical injuries: Falls can lead to serious injuries, such as broken bones, especially in the hip, wrist, and spine. These injuries may require surgery, hospitalisation, and lengthy rehabilitation. Even minor injuries, such as sprains and contusions, can limit a person’s mobility and functional ability. Chronic pain: Injuries resulting from a fall can lead to chronic pain, especially in older people who already suffer from conditions such as arthritis. Chronic pain can negatively affect quality of life and limit the ability to participate in daily activities. Fear of falling again: After a fall, many seniors develop a significant fear of falling again. This fear can lead to reduced physical activity, social isolation, and

decreased quality of life. In addition, the fear of falling can increase the risk of future falls due to inactivity and the resulting muscle weakness. Dependency and loss of autonomy: Severe injuries caused by a fall can lead to loss of independence and the need for assistance in activities of daily living. Dependency on caring for others can have a significant emotional impact on older adults, leading to frustration, sadness, and decreased self-esteem. -Additional health complications: Falls can trigger additional health complications, such as prolonged immobility, pressure ulcers, respiratory infections, and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Economic and social costs: Falls in older adults also have economic and social implications. Hospitalisations, medical treatments, and rehabilitation can lead to high health care costs. In addition, falls can lead to a decrease in social participation, affecting personal relationships and community integration. How to Make Your Home Safer and Reduce the Risk of Falls Removing obstacles and maintaining order Remove loose rugs or secure them with double-sided tape. Make sure there are no loose electrical wires or in passageways. Avoid clutter in hallways and transit areas. Improve lighting Make sure there is adequate lighting in all areas of the home, especially in hallways, stairwells, and bathrooms. Install nightlights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms for easy visibility at night. Use easily accessible light switches and

www.costablancapeople.com

add additional lighting if needed. Securing the stairs Install secure handrails on both sides of stairs, secured firmly to the wall. Place anti-slip strips on the steps to improve traction. Keep stairs clear of objects or debris. Improve bathroom safety Install grab bars in the shower, bathtub and near the toilet to provide additional stability. Use non-slip mats in the bathtub or shower. Make sure bathroom floors are dry and free of water or moisture. Making Adjustments in the Bedroom Place a bedside lamp near the bed for easy access to lighting. Make sure the bed is at an appropriate height to make it easier to get in and out. Keep everyday items within easy reach and avoid the need to reach or climb on furniture to reach them. Use mobility aids: If necessary, use canes, walkers, or other assistive walking devices. It is important that these devices are properly adjusted and used correctly. Keeping the floor safe Use non-slip surfaces on slippery floors, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor areas. Immediately clean up any spilled liquid or wet surface. Avoid excessive waxing on floors, as it can make them slippery. Maintain open communication Encourage open communication between family members and caregivers about safety concerns and needs in the home. Conduct regular home checks to identify potential risks and take preventative measures.

areness sessions

Have you made any new year’s resolutions yet? I’m not just talking about the usual; lose weight, get fit, give up smoking. Are you the sort of person who makes resolutions with all good intentions; then gives up? Well, we’ve all done that. The truth is, that making resolutions can be good for us as it provides clarity for goals. Making resolutions gives you direction; otherwise you can end up wasting precious time - for instance; in a job, situation, or relationship that you hate - plodding on aimlessly as you may have done for years. Before you know it, another year rolls by and nothing has changed. We all know a new year can have you feeling a little depressed. You may feel life is passing you by, but the upside is that ‘you

have a life’. So try turning a negative into a positive; otherwise what is the alternative? I lost my sister last year to cancer; she was 63 and had no choice in the matter. She did not want to die; we did not want her to die. If you are alive and well; start by being grateful for the gift of life. One of my elderly relatives, who was a pessimist by nature, always used to say, ‘there’s no fun in getting old’; another of my older relatives still says ‘you know, you’re a long time dead...’. Let’s be optimistic and not only make the most of what we’ve been given, but go forth and continue to make the absolute very best of it. Let 2024 be the start of the happiest chapter in our lives.

Having worked in the scrap business on the Costa Blanca for over a decade, the team at Bradley Breakers could tell us all a horror story or two about people who thought they had scrapped their old car only to find that the car was still registered, and even in some instanes driving around accumulating fines, many months later. There are car owners on the Costa Blanca who have faced large fines

after the vehicle they thought they’d dealt with was still driving around. Unfortunately, as long as your name remains on the document of ownership you are legally responsible for that vehicle. Here in Spain the system of scrapping a vehicle is much different from anything you are likely to be used to Ireland or the UK. If you also have the added complication of a language

barrier it is even more imperative that, when considering disposing of a vehicle, you use a company in which you have complete trust. One such company is Bradley Breakers. They are experts in the field and they can make the whole process simple and uncomplicated. Simply make the call, they will make you a cash offer for your vehicle and if accepted they will collect the vehicle on a tow truck from your home ensuring the minimum of disruption and fuss for you. They will then leave you with the necessary legal documentation, indicating that they have taken ownership of your old vehicle and then, once the vehicle has been officially ‘scrapped’, you will be issued with the official DGT Certificate (Baja). Do be aware that, if this is something that you are currently considering, you need to ensure that your vehicle is scrapped by 31 December to avoid any

further SUMA bills. Bradley Breakers said, “We can’t overemphasise the importance of doing the ‘baja’ of a vehicle properly in Spain. It saves so much hassle and heartache further along the line doing it in the correct way with a trustworthy company.” Bradley Breakers, which employs over 40 people, now have an impressive new scrapyard consisting of a 20,000 square metre site on which they house a 3,000 sqm warehouse in which they store thousands of used parts which they have removed from cars. All parts are recorded on a computer stock system and stacked on racking within the warehouse. You can even buy parts online. So, if you are looking for a component for your car, before you buy new, you could save time and money by going directly to Bradley Breakers. Sharpley said on Instagram she required ‘urgent surgery’ to remove an organ She thanked Everton midfielder, 24, for caring for her during period of ill health Watch out Liverpool and Arsenal! Man City are ready to do what they always do and hit top gear at this stage of the season Dwight McNeil’s partner Megan Sharpley has told of her health struggles in an emotional New Year’s

Instagram post. Posting a photograph of herself in hospital, Sharpley revealed she’d ‘undergone urgent open surgery and lost an organ or two.’ She also praised the Everton star, 24, as an ‘amazing human being’ for looking after her. ‘Dwight, you held my hand every time the bad news came, you reminded me how strong I was and how it was all going to be okay,’ Sharpley wrote. ‘You dressed me, you washed me, you carried me, you fed me, you injected me, you juggled all your commitments whilst supporting me and never complained.

The Dutch legend was beaten by four sets to one after a stunning showing from the 16-year-old,

who will continue to take the competition by storm as he moves on to the last-eight. Littler powered into the lead after taking the first three sets on the bounce, before the Dutchman could finally get on the board by snatching the fourth. The 16-year-old threw an average of 105.01 in a thunderous display, booking his spot in the quarterfinals where he will face Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan on New Year’s Day. For Van Barneveld, though, it was the end of the road, but the Dutchman was full of praise for his ‘superior’ on the night.

Rio Ferdinand revealed he underwent a hair and beard transplant in Istanbul He has showed off his new look for the first time on television on TNT Sports Ian Ladyman expects Chris Sutton’s New Year’s resolution to go up in smoke in less than a week Rio Ferdinand showed off his new hair and beard transplant on television for the first time ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Luton at Kenilworth Road on Saturday. The England and Manchester United legend recently visited the Dr Cinik

hospital in Istanbul to undergo the treatment. Ferdinand was part of TNT Sports’ coverage of the Premier League clash, starring alongside Jermaine Jenas on the punditry team. In a social media video released by Dr Cinik last week, Ferdinand said: ‘I’m here to get my beard sorted out, I’ve got a couple of holes, a couple of patches. ‘Get my hair transplant done. I can’t wait to get it done. Listen, if you’re ever thinking about getting yours done, this is the place to be.’
