Forty-thousand ecstasy tablets taken off Murcia streets

In a significant operation, the Policia Nacional in Alicante have arrested two men transporting a staggering 37,950 ecstasy pills

valued at €433,000 from France to the Murcia region. The arrest unfolded when vigilant motorbike patrol police officers observed

the duo in their foreign-plated car behaving suspiciously, prompting the officers to take action. The foreign-plated vehicle was stopped, and the two men were

instructed to exit the car for a search. During the inspection, a bag containing 1,960 ecstasy pills was discovered under the driver’s seat. Startled that their illegal stash had been found, the suspects attempted to escape on foot, triggering a pursuit through city streets. The officers, determined to apprehend the suspects, chased them as they scaled several walls, some reaching up to four meters in height. Eventually, the fugitives

were detained, and the vehicle was handed over to the Policia Nacional’s Narcotics Unit for a more thorough search to see if there were any additional drugs hidden in the car. During the subsequent investigation, officers noticed a “barely noticeable” modification to the chassis, raising suspicions of a potential hidden compartment. These suspicions were confirmed when a camouflaged area was discovered under the glove box and gear lever, containing 20 bags with a staggering additional 36,000 ecstasy pills. The arrested individuals, aged 37 and 39 and of Algerian nationality, now face charges of drug trafficking and resisting arrest. The magnitude of the drug haul, with an estimated retail value of €433,000, underscores the severity of the crime and the potential impact it could have had on the region. The successful interception of this substantial drug transport highlights the dedication and vigilance of law enforcement in Alicante, as they continue to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities. The two suspects are now in custody, awaiting legal proceedings for their alleged involvement in this major drug trafficking operation.

Orihuela man gets 43 years in prison for murdering an 80 year-old and her son The Eleventh Section of the Provincial Court of Alicante , with headquarters located in Elche, has imposed 43 years in prison, with a maximum effective sentence of 40 years, on a man after declaring it proven that he murdered two of his neighbors, an octogenarian. and his son , in Orihuela on June 6 of last year. The sentence , which can be appealed before the Civil and Criminal Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community, includes the guilty verdict issued by a popular jury at the end of the trial, which was held between the 16th and 19th of last October. The events occurred at the stroke of midnight, when the accused approached his neighbors’ home and argued with them because they owed him money for placing a bar on a window. Once the argument was over, he went to his house, located on the same street, and returned about twenty minutes later with his hands covered by plastic gloves and armed with a hammer-type mace. The prisoner took advantage of the fact that the door of his neighbors’ house was open to

enter and go to the kitchen, where, unexpectedly and without giving him the chance to defend himself, he dealt several blows with the mace to the head of one of the victims, a 50-year-old man, which caused his death a few minutes later, as reflected in the judicial resolution. He then went to the living room, where the former’s 80-year-old mother was sitting in an armchair, and also hit her repeatedly on the head with the mace to end her life and prevent her from giving him away. This victim died the following month from his injuries in a hospital. The judge of the Court who presided over this trial, in accordance with the verdict of

the popular jury, has sentenced the accused for two crimes of murder to sentences of 20 and 23 years in prison , the first for the murder of the man and the second for his mother’s. However, in accordance with the provisions of article 76.1 c of the Penal Code, the maximum effective completion of the sentence will be 40 years. In addition, he has imposed a prohibition on approaching closer than 300 meters and communication for a period of more than ten years than the prison sentences with respect to a son and brother, respectively, of those murdered, whom he must compensate with 130,000 euros in total due to the death of their relatives.

He was presented with a rare Gold Valedictory Certificate by Captain Steve McGlory RN the current Defence Attaché based in Madrid, who along with his wife Maribel, was the Guest of Honour. The certificate was signed by the 1st Sea Lord, and comments on Carl’s exceptional commitment over the years, including service onboard Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia, operational service in a number of theatres and the award of a Second Sea Lord’s Commendation for his contribution whilst employed as the RN Staff Officer in HMS KING ALFRED. The Ramón de Campoamor civic centre in Lomas de Cabo Roig has faced significant structural issues since its completion in 2011. The initial signs of cracks escalated into larger fractures throughout the building, prompting concerns about its safety. Despite being in community use for ten years, the facility never received a ‘Certificate of Occupation.’ The Orihuela Council’s surveyor now estimates that approximately 300,000 euros would be needed for necessary repairs to make the civic centre safe for future use. The closure of the building resulted in the expulsion of Orihuela Costa Community Care and other local community groups. Some groups were forced to shut down, coinciding with the early stages of the pandemic. The construction of the Ramón de Campoamor centre was awarded

to Mettas SL in 2010 for 650,159.29 euros, with completion in November 2011. The issues began to surface in January 2019 when subsidence was detected, leading to the eviction of users in December of that year. Despite the council architect’s call for urgent action, no repairs were made six months later. In February 2021, the council opened a complaint against Mettas, insisting they correct the defects, but this proved unsuccessful. As of three years later, the current PP-Vox council has not clarified its intentions regarding the civic centre’s future. Meanwhile, the PSOE has urged the government team to explain why the complaint against the company has not been resolved. Carolina Gracia of the PSOE believes that the company can still be held accountable for resolving the building’s problems.

Seniors on the move Orihuela Costa The Councillor for Social Welfare, Agustina Rodríguez, has presented the new edition of Mayores en Marcha Orihuela Costa (Seniors on the Move), which will take place on 29th November at 10:30am. After the march, lunch

will be provided to the participants and sports activities such as dancing, yoga or gerontogymnastics, among others, will be carried out. The day will end at 1:30pm. The Social Welfare councillor recalled that to register for this event, people over 60 years of age must contact the instructors of the workshops in which they participate in the Senior Centres or Sports Centres.

EasyJet expands Alicante-Elche Torrevieja extends Airport routes for Summer 2024 ‘Terrace Tax’ for 2024 In a major boost for travellers, lowcost airline EasyJet has announced the launch of nine new routes from Alicante-Elche airport next summer, coinciding with the opening of a new base at the location. Among the exciting additions are three routes connecting the UK with the sunny shores of the Costa Blanca. The inaugural services to AlicanteElche will kick off from Southampton on 31st March, followed by Belfast City on 2nd May, along with the highly anticipated return of the Newcastle route on 2nd April. Throughout the summer season, these three routes will offer convenient options for travelers. Southampton to Alicante is set to operate once a week

on Sundays, Newcastle to Alicante will be available twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and Belfast City to Alicante will have two flights per week on Thursdays and Sundays. In addition to the UK routes, EasyJet is set to introduce new flights to Zurich, Prague, Lyon, Lille, Nantes, and Nice, providing travellers with even more options. This expansion is expected to create an additional 125,000 seats for passengers. With this development, EasyJet anticipates offering a remarkable 1.5 million seats to Alicante between April and October 2024, marking a substantial 10% increase compared to the ‘high’ season of 2023. The increased flight schedule will

be supported by the deployment of three aircraft at the new Alicante base, underscoring EasyJet’s commitment to the region. Furthermore, EasyJet will re-establish flights from Luton to Reus on the Costa Dorada, while also introducing a brand-new route from Manchester to Reus. Both routes are scheduled to commence on April 2, operating twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the summer season. With these exciting additions, EasyJet aims to provide travellers with an even wider range of options to explore popular destinations, further enhancing connectivity between Alicante-Elche and key cities across Europe.

Spain’s tourism industry bounces back Holidaymakers from abroad visiting Spain this year are spending more money than ever, and visitor numbers have soared since last year, according to recent figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Between January and September 2023 inclusive, a total of 66.5 million people resident abroad travelled to Spain – about one-and-a-half times the year-round population, and the equivalent of the entire headcount of the UK. Although this represents a reduction of 0.6% on 2019 – the last year before the pandemic and still Spain’s record

season – foreign tourists were much more numerous than during the same nine-month period in 2022. Year on year, a total of 18.8% more visitors from abroad came to Spain in 2023, the INE reveals. And although numbers are slightly lower than prepandemic, the amount tourists spend when they travel to Spain has increased by 15.1%. Based upon the first nine months of 2022, this represents a rise of 24% foreign holidaymakers have brought in nearly €84.7 billion in 2023, and the year is not even over yet. The most recent complete month for

which figures are available, September, saw 8.8 million visitors to Spain from other countries, which is 0.2% lower than in the final pre-pandemic year, but 13.6% higher than in 2022. During that month alone, visitors from abroad spent over €11.2bn, being 22.6% more than in September 2022 and 16% more than in September 2019. Fears of the impact of Covid and Brexit on Spain’s tourism industry have largely been assuaged – the expected hit to the sector has only been temporary and short term, making a full recovery within less than two years of the last Statedecreed restrictions on movement.

In a recent extraordinary plenary session, Torrevieja’s city council voted to reinstate the ‘Terrace Tax’ for hotels, bars, and restaurants, a decision met with mixed reactions from local political parties. The measure, which garnered a majority of votes, was contested by the PSOE, who called for an automatic 50% discount if the fee is paid promptly. Meanwhile, Sueña Torrevieja vehemently opposed the tax, citing ongoing economic challenges faced by businesses. The ‘Terrace Tax’ was temporarily suspended in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a relief measure extended due to subsequent crises, including inflation and the conflict in Ukraine. This suspension aimed to provide critical support to the local hospitality sector, which comprises around 600 businesses, navigating through tumultuous times. With the reintroduction of the tax, the municipal budget is set to recover approximately 1.7 million euros.

Alongside terraces, the levy will extend to fairgrounds and the craft stalls of the popular “hippies market” on Paseo de La Libertad. Sueña spokesperson, Pablo Samper, acknowledged the legality of the measure but raised concerns about the slow recovery of economic activity. He specifically highlighted the challenges faced by the ‘hippies market’ and the fairground, projecting continued struggles for these businesses, particularly in light of ongoing port redevelopment, which is anticipated to persist for at least the next two years. The debate surrounding the ‘Terrace Tax’ underscores the delicate balance between economic recovery and the financial burdens faced by local businesses. As Torrevieja navigates its path towards post-crisis stability, the decision will undoubtedly continue to be a topic of discussion among stakeholders, with a keen eye on the welfare of the city’s vibrant hospitality industry.

Spanish right-wing politician The alert continues due to shortages in the Segura basin shot in face in Madrid A Spanish right-wing politician and former vice-president of the European parliament is reported to be in a stable condition in hospital after being shot in the face by a masked gunman in a wealthy Madrid neighbourhood. Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a former leader of the conservative People’s party (PP) in Catalonia who joined the far-right Vox party in 2014, was shot on a street in the Salamanca district of the Spanish capital at about 1.30pm local time on Thursday. Madrid’s emergency services confirmed that a 78-year-old man had received a gunshot wound and said the bullet had passed through his jaw. El País reported that Vidal-Quadras was in a stable condition in Gregorio Marañon hospital and was being treated for a wound to the face. The paper said the right-wing politician was attacked as he came out of the building where he lives. “Initial investigations suggest that two men on a black Yamaha motorbike were involved in the shooting,” El País said. “The gunman, who was wearing a crash helmet, jumped on to the bike after discharging his weapon. The pair then drove off.” Vidal-Quadras was a longtime member of the PP and a European parliament member before he broke away to help found Vox. He left Vox shortly

after a failed attempt to win a European parliament seat in 2014. Vox’s leader, Santiago Abascal, said he believed that Vidal-Quadras’ life was not in immediate peril. “Thank god it seems that Alejandro VidalQuadras is out of danger,” he said. Spain’s acting prime minister, the socialist leader Pedro Sánchez, conveyed his shock and sadness at the attack. “I offer all my solidarity and my wishes for Alejo Vidal-Quadras’s swift recovery,” he said. “We trust that the investigation will establish the facts and that those responsible will be arrested as soon as possible.” The incident followed a tumultuous few days in Spanish politics. Sánchez moved a step closer to another term in office after his socialist party,

the PSOE, won the support of Catalan separatists by offering a deeply controversial amnesty for those who took part in the illegal and failed bid for regional independence six years ago. The proposed amnesty law has been fiercely condemned by the PP and Vox, who see it as a cynical move to allow Sánchez to remain in power. The issue led to angry and violent protests outside the PSOE’s Madrid headquarters. Vidal-Quadras had made his opposition to the amnesty abundantly clear. “The infamous pact … that will crush the rule of law and end the separation of powers has been agreed,” he wrote on X, formerly know as Twitter, on Thursday morning. “Thus will our nation cease to be a liberal democracy and become a totalitarian tyranny. The Spanish people will not allow it.”

The Discharge Commission will be convened to set the regulated volumes in the reservoirs to be supplied to meet irrigation uses. The scarcity indicators of the Segura Hydrographic Demarcation ( CHS ), in its global system, have shown, for the third consecutive month, the state of alert due to shortages in the Segura basin. For this reason, the Basin Organization will soon convene the Discharge Commission in which the volumes to be supplied during the current hydrological year will be proposed to the presidency of the CHS. The proposal will be framed in the provisions and forecasts that the Special Drought Plan for the

Segura basin contemplates for this scenario. With the current situation, the CHS does not plan to adopt restrictions on the supply of water to supply populations. However, given that this autumn is being very dry and warm, the basin is receiving less rainfall than would correspond to a normal year, for this reason, the release of water from the basin’s reservoirs will have to adapt to the available resources. For these reasons, the CHS wants to call on all users to make rational consumption of the available resources due to the current situation suffered by the Segura Demarcation. The scarcity indices of the Segura basin are

at alert level as of November 1, 2023. In this regard, the scarcity index of the global system that takes into account the contributions of the basin and those received by the Tajo-Segura transfer gives a value of 0.222, in a range of 0 to 1. Individually, the scarcity index of the basin subsystem is 0.163 and that of the transfer subsystem is 0.281. Finally, the Segura basin maintains the situation of absence of prolonged drought , which implies the maintenance without any reduction of the ecological flow regime foreseen for the ordinary situation in the Hydrological Plan, in the rivers of the hydrographic district.

Valencian Community announces elimination of Tourist Tax at London Trade Fair In a significant move aimed at bolstering tourism, the President of the Generalitat and the Minister of Tourism jointly signed a proposed Decree to eliminate the tourist tax during their visit to the trade fair in London. The decision, announced at the WTM fair, carries a strong message of hospitality to British tourists. President Mazón emphasised that the signing took place in London to assure the British tourist market that their presence is valued, and that there are no barriers to their enjoyment of the Valencian Community. The move received resounding support from the tourism sector and the broader economy of the region, which benefits substantially from tourism. The President announced that the formal repeal of the tax will be presented at the upcoming Plenary Session of the Consell, scheduled for this Friday. This timely decision is expected to resonate positively with the 2.2 million British tourists who have already explored the Valencian Community this year, with an estimated 2.5 million more anticipated to arrive in 2024. Tourists from the United

Kingdom will now be able to relish their visits without any additional financial burden. This welcoming gesture is being actively communicated to British tourist agencies across the United Kingdom, reinforcing the commitment of the Valencian Community to fostering a thriving tourism industry. The Minister of Innovation, Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, Nuria Montes, joined President Mazón in this announcement, further

underscoring the collective effort to promote a vibrant and accessible tourism sector in the Valencian Community. This progressive step not only aligns with the region’s dedication to fostering tourism but also sends a clear signal of openness and inclusivity to visitors from around the world, solidifying the Valencian Community’s reputation as a premier destination for travelers seeking warmth, culture, and natural beauty.

Are Your Savings Still In The UK? Many people who have moved to Spain do not want to bring all their savings and investments with them to this country. Spanish banks do not have a great track record and then there is currency question – Sterling or convert to Euros? One of the main problems with keeping your money in the UK, is a lack of adviser to keep an eye on your investments and switch funds when the need arises. Your UK financial adviser should not continue to work on your behalf if you are living as a Spanish tax resident. Another problem is that UK based savings like ISA’s, Premium Bonds and other NS&I products

are not suitable for Spanish residents. As a Spanish tax resident there are a number or products offered by some of the worlds’ largest financial institutions specifically tailored to meet your investment needs. Indeed, one such provider, Prudential International, have a Spanish tax compliant savings bond that outperforms the UK equivalent simply because of the taxation treatment. Here at Seagate Wealth we understand that many ex-pats do not wish to bring their money to Spain and for that reason we work with a number of product providers to ensure their money works as hard as possible with minimum

risk. The Prudential savings bond offers clients a way to grow their money virtually tax-free, with no need to report on their annual tax return or the Modelo 720. The other major benefit is the money is not held here in Spain, but in the Republic of Ireland. The Seagate team has a wealth of experience in providing advice on all aspects of savings and investment options. If you have an investment, but no adviser, we can help to get your portfolio back on track. For a free no-obligation chat with a UK qualified adviser, call 965 704 338 or email: contact@seagatewealth.es

The Prosecutor’s Office requests seven years in prison for the former mayor of Bigastro Last Thursday in the seventh section of Elche, the former mayor of Bigastro, José Joaquín Moya (PSOE), and the former intervening secretary of the city council will be tried , accused of the crimes of prevarication and embezzlement , for the irregularities in the allocation of a municipal lot. The Prosecutor’s Office maintains that the former first mayor agreed in 2005 with a construction company to exchange three houses , owned by the company, for a municipal property, corresponding to the new sector of the General Urban Planning Plan, D12. In addition to the homes, the company gave the council an amount of money to settle the difference between the amounts of the properties that were going to change . According to the public accusation, this change of properties was carried out with defects of illegality, which the former mayor was aware of, and violating the rules that must be followed for the disposal of this type of property. The Public Ministry maintains that the process was not supervised nor was its price or the procedure followed justified, without the secretary-intervenor

noticing it, despite being legally obliged to do so. At the same time, the Prosecutor’s Office details that part of the payments that the construction company made in consideration for the difference in value of the properties, close to 190,000 euros, are not recorded in the public coffers nor is it recorded that they were used for any other public purpose. The Public Prosecutor’s

Office is asking for seven years in prison for the former mayor for a continued crime of embezzlement and a tenyear disqualification from employment or public office. For the former secretary, he requests six years in prison for a continuous crime of embezzlement and disqualification for employment or public office of 10 years for a crime of prevarication.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The pound found a new lease of life at the end of last week and the beginning of this one, taking advantage of the USD weakness, and improving by 2.3% very quickly at the start of this week and seeing GBP/USD hit over 1.24 for the first time since mid-September. However, the latter half of this week has seen the pound slip back. On Wednesday, we heard from the Bank of England’s Governor, Andrew Bailey, who countered market speculation about potential interest rate cuts, reiterating that it was premature to discuss easing policy given the persistent threat of inflation. Bailey noted that although inflation is expected to decline significantly in the coming months due to decreases in energy prices, a restrictive monetary policy needs to be maintained for an extended period. He highlighted the lingering ‘upside risks’ to inflation, including the potential for regional conflict in the Middle East. However, Bailey also expressed some optimism about the forecast, indicating a return to the inflation target within a two-year horizon but stressing that an ongoing effort was necessary. This morning, we also saw the UK’s growth data for the last quarter. Q3’s GDP figures showed growth flatlined (0.0%) in the three months between July and September, which was slightly better than the 0.1% contraction forecast by economists in a poll for Reuters but in line with the Bank of England’s expectations. The data could add more weight to the ‘higher for longer’ interest rates narrative we’ve been

hearing from policymakers, as it appears the economy is still strong enough to withstand elevated interest rates. Governor Bailey will hope that he can effectively combat high wage growth and inflation, while not damaging economic growth too much over the next two years.

EUR There was not a lot of Europe-focused news this week on the data front, and the EUR is not adding much colour to the overall FX picture at the moment. EUR/USD movement – or lack thereof - seemed to back this up this week, as the currency pair remained very flat throughout. However, European economic data continues to show potentially concerning trends, and it seemed that the ECB had taken this on board when it stopped raising rates at the end of October. Former European Central Bank president Mario Draghi spoke about his concern for EU economic growth this week, predicting a recession by the end of the year. He did add that he thought it was unlikely that the recession would be “deep” or “destabilising”, but his words contradicted the forecasts of a return to growth from the ECB and International Monetary Fund. After a robust set of earnings reports boosted European shares on Thursday evening, the stock markets pulled back again this morning following comments from the Federal Reserve Chair, Jerome Powell. Powell spoke about his and his fellow policymakers’ lack of confidence over having done enough to rein in inflation, which could mean interest rates remain higher longer than markets currently anticipate.

Orihuela residents ask Carlos Mazón to reopen the Marqués de Rafal Palace A group of residents of Orihuela have written a letter to the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, requesting the reopening of the Palacio del Marqués de Rafal, headquarters of the Presidency of the Generalitat Valenciana in Orihuela. The Palace of the Marquis of Rafal was acquired by the previous administration of the Community to be used as the headquarters of the Presidency of the Generalitat in the Vega Baja region, the only seat of the Presidency outside of the three capitals of the provinces that make up the Valencian Community. The headquarters

of the Vega Renhace Plan was also installed there . However, since the dismissal of the previous Administration, on July 19, the Palace has been closed “without any maintenance, cleaning, gardening, security, etc. service.” Not even ventilation of the building,” says this group of neighbors who believe “that this is not the best of situations for a headquarters of the Presidency of the Generalitat that also houses an exhibition of historical coats of arms of the Kingdom of Valencia that Oriolanos and visitors “They haven’t been able to enjoy it.” For this reason, these

neighbours have drafted and signed a letter that they have sent to Carlos Mazón “in order to prevent the degradation of this unique property.” For this reason, the signatories convey to the President their “willingness for any voluntary collaboration regarding historical advice and programming and management of cultural activities as some of us already did at the time of the purchase of the building and its implementation.” This letter has been signed by eleven people in total and has also been sent to the mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, and to the Delegate of the Consell in Alicante, Agustina Esteve.

Quiron Hospital chapel vandalised

The Diocese of Orihuela – Alicante has reported that on the night of last Sunday, November 5th, “the chapel of the Quirónsalud Hospital in Torrevieja was desecrated .” According to the chaplain, Rev. Javier Vicens , the thieves took the tabernacle, with the Eucharistic reserve, an altar cross, a chalice, a chasuble, a corporal and a liturgical book. The investigation remains open by the Civil Guard. Vicens explains that “the desecration of the Holy Eucharist is a serious event

and therefore, in the coming days, the diocesan bishop will ask that the parishes, religious communities and faithful in general carry out acts of reparation for the sacrilege that occurred.” Likewise, he insists that “the stolen material elements, which have their value and importance, are not comparable to the fact of the sacrilege of the Eucharist. “This is why any type of celebration in the hospital chapel is suspended until the bishop makes an act of reparation

and redress for the events that occurred.” Likewise, he is grateful for all the expressions of support and closeness, especially prayer and acts of reparation, for what happened. As well as gratitude to the hospital management and the state security forces and bodies for their commitment and diligence in the face of the unfortunate events. From the Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante they regret and condemn these events for what “implies an attack against what is most sacred to the faith.”

The residents of San Miguel Rafal increases IBI Tax de Salinas will decide where by 10 percent to invest 80,000 euros The residents of San Miguel de Salinas will decide where to invest 80,000 euros from the 2024 municipal budget with participatory budgets. During the month of November, citizens registered in the town who appear on the IBI register and are over 16 years of age can present their proposals to the City Council electronically and in person. These projects will be evaluated by a technical commission to check their viability, and will finally be submitted to an open vote among the residents themselves. This is the participatory budgeting initiative, in force in the municipality since 2021 . The presentation of proposals can be made until December 2nd through a form available at the City Hall check-in, or through the digital platform enabled for this purpose . In the following month, a technical commission made up of staff from the Secretariat,

ADL, Urban Planning and the spokespersons of the political groups will evaluate the proposals and select those that are purely local and do not exceed 80,000 euros. The City Council must justify the reason for possible rejections, and classify the rest of the viable projects according to the type of expenses they involve: investment or current expenses. The proposals that meet the criteria will be submitted to a citizen vote between January 4 and February 4,

2024, to decide which ones will finally be developed. The mayor of San Miguel, Juan de Dios Fresneda, invites the municipality to support this proposal, “so that citizens can have more and more voice and more weight in municipal decisions.” For his part, David Jesús Pérez, Councilor for the Treasury, has indicated that “launching this initiative for the third consecutive year is in order to involve the Sanmigueleros in the political life of the municipality.”

The Municipal Plenary Session of the Rafal City Council has approved by majority the update of the prices of the Real Estate Tax (IBI) in the municipality. The mayor of the town, Manuel Pineda, has justified the need for this increase in the IBI by 10% , motivated by the increase in the cost of energy and the tax on the collection, transport and treatment of solid urban waste, and which has meant an increase in municipal spending in 2022 and 2023. Rafal thus joins the list of localities in Vega Baja and the province of Alicante that have increased this tax in recent

months in their municipal area, and which will go from 0.7 to 0.8 in 2024 . The first mayor has indicated that “we have tried to ensure that this increase is not excessively large for our neighbors”, giving as an example that “a standard bill of 248.73 euros will go to 284.26 euros, increasing an average of 35 euros for housing.” Pineda has pointed out that “although we have been able to keep the IBI stable and unchanged for almost a decade , the exponential increase in the cost of waste treatment has put in check the economic work that we have been doing in the city council since 2012 which,

together with the increase of the price of electricity, has meant an increase of 130,000 euros in municipal spending, leading us to have a negative settlement in 2022. The Rafael mayor has also referred, as a cause of this situation, to the increase in the general cost of living since the last decrease in the IBI in 2014, with an increase in prices of 20.8%. “Amounts that we have been assuming in recent years, but with the increase in the maintenance of basic services, it had become an unaffordable situation, which has forced us to make this decision,” he stated.

Why direct cremations in Spain are on the rise?

We all know.. one day we’ll need a funeral. You owe it to your family to make the best plans to support them when that moment comes. What Is a Direct to Cremation Plan? Avalon’s Direct to Cremation Plan

for expats in Spain is a basic funeral plan for an unattended cremation in mainland Spain. It’s a ‘no-fuss’ option where the cremation takes place without mourners present, after which your ashes will be returned directly to your family.

Then, if your loved ones wish, they can arrange and pay for their own send-off at a preferred time and place... without the hassle of keeping to tradition. With inflation around the world at levels not seen in more than 2

decades, Avalon Funeral Plans are predicting funeral prices could climb to historic highs. Maybe that’s why so many expats, are opting for a ‘no-fuss’ direct cremation. But... Is It Right for You? A low-cost funeral looks good on paper, but make sure your plan is the best choice for your family in the future. Rushing through the process to ‘get it over and done with’ isn’t always the right choice for loved ones. Some families of expats find the ‘efficiency’ of a Direct Cremation to contradict their needs in those tender moments. Talk it Through Like most important decisions in life, it’s best to chat with someone who

knows all the right questions to ask. Our friends at Avalon Funeral Plans have a team of experts here in Spain that can help you come to the best decision for you and your family. Their team understand the complex Spanish funeral system and Avalon have decades of experience. Speak to an Avalon expert on 966 799 070 or visit AvalonFuneralPlans.com

This is the book that captures the magic of Vega Baja The illustrator and lover of mystery, Marta Ruiz, known on social networks as “Martuja” launches her new project La Vega Mágica at the Rojales Sociocultural Center in which the most relevant legends and curiosities of many of the municipalities that are collected and illustrated are collected and illustrated. make up the region. La Vega Mágica was born from the combination of the three great passions of the Rojalera: mystery, love for their land and devotion to popular culture. The illustrator highlights that “not only is it a book of legends, it also deals with the origin of many of the municipal festivals, data that does not appear in history books but that should be known by the entire population.” The book has a novel design full of illustrations, maps, QR codes that translate to videos of the places that appear on each of the pages such as Benijófar, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Orihuela, Redován or Rojales or even a game called La Treasure Hunt in which

the author invites readers to go to each of the places to find a hidden element. Through its pages many legends of the Vega Baja will be known, such as The Virgin and the Mudejar, by Cox; Zulema and Manuel, from San Miguel de Salinas; Jaime “the Bearded”, by Catral or The Girl with the Satchel, by Pilar de la Horadada, among others. The book is available in all bookstores in the region, as well as on the author’s official website and the following have collaborated: Radio Orihuela – Cadena SER, Caja Rural Central, Librería Atenea, Hormigones y Morteros del Sol, Restaurante Davinia Martínez, City Hall of San Miguel de Salinas, Rojales City Council, Vegabajadigital.com and Benez Comunicación. It all started with his YouTube channel Rojales Misterioso where he told the legends of his native municipality, Rojales. He soon realized that the region was a source of wealth in this area, so he expanded his geographical area of mystery throughout the

Vega Baja del Segura. This is how the ‘Leyendas de la Vega Baja’ section was born in the program ‘Hoy por Hoy Vega Baja’ on Radio Orihuela Cadena SER where this project began to take shape. But... Who is Martuja? He is undoubtedly a person known throughout the region due to his roots and the various projects he carries out to put Vega Baja del Seguro at the top. He studied Design at the Orihuela School of Arts and Crafts and at the Alcoy School of Art and Design. He currently combines his passion for mystery with the illustration of children’s stories, graphic design work for private corporations and public institutions. She also teaches drawing classes and courses for children and adolescents through the Youth Departments of different locations and works as a scientific communicator in various local and regional media. In February 2023, she had a great impact by participating in the documentary

“The Curse of Windsor” broadcast on the HBO MAX platform. This is not her first book since she is also the author

of El Alcasil where she collects typical words from the Vega Baja del Segura, also illustrated by her.

Stagestruck give charity donation towards Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association The Stagestruck Players are a small Amateur Dramatic group who are known for performing comedy Murder Mysteries in local bars. All proceeds raised from the performances are donated to their chosen charity, the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association. The group recently made their annual donation of €5000 bringing the total amount since 2015 to €53,400. The Stagestruck Players perform twice a month with original scripts written by their director, Leigh Humphries. During the evening, the actors perform a scenario that ends with one of them being murdered. Our very own Inspector Clouseau or Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope then makes an

appearance and takes over the proceedings with hilarious effect. For December and January, we´ll be performing Christmas themed scripts involving pantomime characters. If this sounds like something

you would enjoy and would like some festive fun, email Leigh at leigh.humphries58@gmail. com and ask to be added to the mailing list. You will be informed of dates and venues of upcoming Murder Mystery events.

The pantomimes that have been put on by the ADAPT Theatre Group for the last 13 years have many unique features. They are performed in both English and Spanish to appeal to speakers of both languages, they contain videos made on location in San Pedro, often involving well known local people and they have many “special effects”. Although most of our actors are English speaking, they learn their Spanish lines assiduously, with the help of our Spanish members of course, and even manage to deliver the odd joke! As for the videos, there have been underwater scenes, toy trucks towed away by a grúa, Snow White shopping at the supermarket, and scenes at the town hall involving local councillors and the mayoress. Our special effects take a lot of work and organisation, but audiences have been thrilled to see Mary Poppins fly onto the stage, Buzz Lightyear fly

away on a drone and the pirates in Peter Pan rolling through a storm with barrels and chests sliding back and forward. So, with this year’s production of Ali Baba and the 4 ½ Thieves you can come and discover whether the magic carpet will fly and if the cave door will open as if by magic. Each year ADAPT puts together boxes of school materials for children whose families are unable to afford them. The school they have worked with most closely over the years is Las Esperanzas, in San Pedro, and this is also the school that regularly participates in our panto. Every year a group of 8 to 12 youngsters practise their dances and learn sentences in English with their teacher, to join us on stage. Their performances are always a fantastic hit and almost every year we spot a budding star. This year will be no different with 8 young accomplices

to the four and a half thieves trying to outwit Ali Baba. Ali Baba and the Four and ½ Thieves” takes place at The Casa De Cultura, C/ Alcalde Julio Albaladejo, San Pedro Del Pinatar on 30th November, 1st December and 2nd December all at 7.00pm and 3rd December at 12.00 noon. Tickets priced at 4€ are available from: Bar Amigos Avda Las Salinas, San Pedro Mail Pinatar (SEUR) Calle Reyes Católicos , San Pedro Animal Amigos Charity Home Shop, C/ Penelope Oasis Blvd, Los Alcázares. For more information about the ADAPT Theatre group contact Eric at: ericberg2@ hotmail.com The Adapt Theatre Group is sponsored by the Adapt Metal Detecting group and this year’s profits will go to the AFEMAR charity in San Pedro for people suffering from mental illness.

Take a walk around the enchanting streets of Santa Cruz At the foot of the Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante’s old town, is the charming neighbourhood of Santa Cruz. Narrow streets full of character, flowers, potted plants, and colourful doorways, make this area an absolute delight to stroll around and feel enlightened. One of the best kept treasures on the Costa Blanca, and a truly magical place to visit, the streets of Santa Cruz are adorned with colour, history and tradition. To discover this special area

and more of the city by foot, we highly recommend Free Walking Tours who offer friendly guided walks, in English, of Alicante city. For more details and to book your tour, call Maria on 616 750 608 or visit their website at www. freewalkingtoursalicante.com A brief history of Santa Cruz The area occupied by this neighbourhood began to be inhabited in the Middle Ages. After the pact of

Teodomiro at the beginning of the 8th century, the Muslims, who had crossed the strait in the year 711, settled in Alicante. The settlement of the slopes of Mount Benacantil began to develop from that arrival. At the top of the mountain they built a citadel where they settled. A population of farmers, fishermen and also sailors who were dedicated to trade and piracy settled on the slopes of the mountain. The town that the Muslims

called the medina of Al Laqant was being formed in this environment. In the 13th century, when the Christians recovered these lands, the existing population had defensive walls that descended from the citadel and surrounded the place. Likewise, the town had a Christian neighbourhood, a souk and two mosques. In the following years, the population and the perimeter of the walls were expanded.

Torrevieja Hospital’s Eduardo Cazorla recognised as Gynecological Oncologist at the European Congress My husband and I have a special wedding anniversary coming up next year. When my sister and her husband were here recently, I mentioned that we had planned a long weekend in Madrid to celebrate. My brother in law leapt right in to invite themselves along. I felt as though a tidal wave had engulfed me. I had already booked the Hotel, and he quizzed me about it. We had all had a drink and were in a jolly mood. My brother in law ended up booking a room at the same Hotel, there and then on his phone. I felt we were being dragged along by it all; when the weekend was meant to be for me and my husband. My husband didn’t react one jot, and later said to me that he thought that’s what I wanted. My brother-in-law has a habit of being very pushy, and it’s not uncommon for people to bend to his pressurising when

he wants something. I wish I’d said something, and I now want to get out of it. It’s not that I don’t love my family, but I don’t want to spend our special wedding anniversary with them. They’ve just gone home. How can stop them coming without offending them. Either send a message, or talk to your sister to explain that that particular weekend was meant especially for you and your husband. It’s not rocket science to suppose a romantic weekend getaway, was intended for just the two of you. Say that you were carried along with the talk at the time, but now realise that you and your husband need this time alone. To soften the blow you can suggest they move their booking to another weekend soon after, and that you join them then.

In his speech at the end of the ceremony, Grande-Marlaska highlighted some of the advances experienced in road safety policies in the previous legislature: the reduction from 100 to 90 kilometers/hour of the maximum speed on conventional roads, the limitation to 30 kilometers/ hour of speed on roads with a single lane of traffic in cities, the reform of the Traffic Law and the approval of the National Road Safety Strategy 2030. For their part, the president of

AESLEME, Nicolás Pérez, and Isabel Morillo, widow of the founder of this association, have collected the medal awarded to this entity for disseminating prevention and awareness campaigns for more than three decades, many of them in the countryside. of road safety education, with the aim of reducing the number of serious injuries and deaths of traumatic origin, as well as for its

work of support and comprehensive assistance to people with spinal cord injuries. “Your work reaffirms our conviction that road safety policy will only be effective if it has a discourse shared by society, if civil society is involved and mobilized, and your work in that sense has been and is immeasurable,” he concluded. Grande-Marlaska.

Carrus – Ilicitana CF 2-3 SC Torrevieja CF Only a few of us made the trip to Elche to see if Torry could top the league with a victory over Carrus – Ilicitana CF at a very uninspiring arena to watch football. Gil again shuffled his pack with Lucas, Lewis, Montero, Burguillos, Campillo and Luis Carlos coming into the starting 11 from our last match. 1 st half – Kick-off A Strong and energetic start from Torry, a cross from Omar (11) finds Luis Carlos (17) at the far post who’s shot hits the top of the bar and goes over, 3mins 19mins have now gone and Torry dominate possession but not creating much. Campillo (5) drills beautiful cross field ball to the feet of Omar who shows great control then unleashes a powerful shot on target, but it’s well held by the keeper 22mins, Lucas (21) hits a shot from 25yards, a good strike but well over the bar 0-1 Torry lead, Lewis 38mins – Luis Carlos crosses in from the left to the near post and Lewis (23) throws himself at the ball to score a fantastic diving header. Luis Carlos has a half chance after Omar cuts in and slides the ball though, but it’s well blocked by the defender and goes behind for a corner 41. Half time Carus – Ilicitana CF 0-1 S.C Torrevieja CF Torry are well on top and will be delighted to have got the breakthrough after a 1st half that lacked chances. Second half - Kick-off 0-2 Luis Carlos 53mins - Torry double their lead, a deep

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 7th of November we fished the 4th round of the winter series at The El Bosquet Complex near to Crevillent. Fifteen anglers turned out and after a slow start to the day the sun came out and the match was fished in temperatures around 23 degrees, with a light breeze. The match was pegged in two sections with pegs A1 to 7 and 28 to 40.The match anglers sometimes get bad press regarding the heavy use of this complex but we do whenever possible leave pegs 8 to 16 for the pleasure anglers and this was again the case even though only four other anglers turned up. Winner on the day was Steve Higgins. Drawn on end peg 40 on

cross from the left finds Luis Carlos at the back post to fire the ball in the net. Substitutions 57mins: Cristian (8) & Lewis (23) off – Replaced by Anto (20) & Dani Muñoz (19) 64mins Omar and Muñoz (19) link down the left. Dani Muñoz shoots for the near post but it’s into the side netting A big Torry pen shout on 67mins. Montero’s (12) shot was blocked by a defender’s hand in the box, but ref gives nothing, it looked like a penalty to us Montero should have scored, Omar with unreal control from a high ball finds the striker at the far post but his delayed shot allows the keeper

to recover and save behind for a corner, 70mins. Substitution 70mins: Cristian Montero (12) off – Replaced by Amin (9) 1-2 Carrús score 72mins - From a corner, their man is on his own 6-yards out to head past Valentine. Poor defending from Torry. 78mins Amin (9) this time missing a guilt edge chance to kill the game for Torry. Great work from Muñoz with a quick break slicing through the Carrús defence before releasing Amin 1 on 1 on the box but again a delayed shot allows the keeper to come out and smother the ball 2-2 Carrús, 80th min - Good goal from Carrús, Torry back

off after a Carrus throw in allowing the attacker space, he takes his time walks in field and shoots from the edge of the box low and hard into Valentine’s bottom right corner. 83 Amin nearly flicks the ball in at the near post, but it deflects off a defender and goes narrowly over the bar 2-3 Amin 94mins - Get in with the last kick of the game!!! A long Campillo free kick is sent into the box, Jorge Carmona manages to flick it on it finds Amin who controls it then fire past the keeper. Full-time Carrus- Ilicitana CF 2-3 SC Torrevieja CF

the supposedly baron long stretch he somehow managed to catch 20.600kg of carp. Steve fished the pole across shallow on maggots. In second place was the current leader of the Winter Series Bob Robinson. Bob used similar tactics from peg 38 and weighed 20.080kg. In third place was Tony Felstead. Drawn on peg 5 and sporting his new expensive pole Tony had a cracking day ,especially with his number 4 section and caught some lovely fish, carp, mullet and bass for 17.100kg.

Narrow winner on the day after a ding dong battle with myself Ian Brown was Neil McBernie. Drawn on peg 6 Neil initially fished pellet in the deep water across and at the half way stage he was slightly behind myself. In the second half of the match he switched to maggots and caught some really big bass and backed it up with a few carp to weigh 21.700kg. I finished a close second with 20.220kg. I was on the end peg 7 and initially I caught on maggot in the deep water across but after that dried up and with the wind blowing into the corner I switch tofloating bread on the pole and caught some quality carp. In third place was Max De Groote on peg B1, max also fished maggot on the pole and weighed 17.360kg.

Pictured is a very pleased Neil Mcbernie with his catch. The clubs will be holding the annual Christmas match at the same complex on the 5th & 6th of December as we currently have 32 members taking part the whole complex will be shut on those two days. The clubs annual membership starts again on the 1st of January and new members are more than welcome. For further details please visit our facebook group facebook.com/ groups/560208264179668 Abbey anglers and Rods N Reels.

Rods N reels The following day we fished the same complex and as only 9 anglers attended we used the nine pegs on A1 to 7.
