No clear winner in Spanish election

In a gripping electoral showdown, Spain’s election on Sunday concluded without a clear winner, defying predictions of a decisive victory for the right-wing that could unseat Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

As the two leading parties fall short of securing a governing majority, negotiations for coalition deals are underway. However, experts are cautioning that this process may lead to a hung parliament and necessitate

yet another election. With all votes tallied by 1:30am Monday morning, the centre-right opposition People’s Party (PP) managed to secure 136 seats in parliament, while Prime Minister Sanchez’s ruling Socialists (PSOE) claimed 122 seats. Both parties failed to reach the required 176 seats for a majority. The far-right Vox, and far-left Sumar, came very close to each

other with 33 and 31 seats, respectively. Surprisingly, the outcome transformed Sanchez from an anticipated outgoing premier to a potential contender for forming another government.

The next step in the process involves King Felipe VI inviting the top vote winner, Feijoo, to try and secure a government. If Feijoo declines, the king may turn to Prime Minister Sanchez with the same request. If no candidate secures a majority within two months of the rst vote on the prime minister, new elections must be held. Remarkably, the election took place during what is the peak of summer holidays for many Spaniards, in one of the hottest months of the year. Voters turned up in swimsuits and used ballots as fans, while polling stations brought in air conditioners or moved voting tables outside to combat the heat. The increased turnout was notable, reaching 70.40% compared to 66.23% in the previous election in 2019.

Five

tonnes of cocaine seized in Alicante

In a huge operation police carried out a dramatic raid on a warehouse in Alicante, seizing an astounding nearly ve tonnes of cocaine with an astonishing 87% purity and a street value of a quarter of a billion euros. The successful bust marks the largest cocaine seizure ever recorded in the province of Alicante and has dealt a signi cant blow to drug tra cking operations in the Levant region.

Following crucial intelligence obtained through diplomatic channels, Spanish authorities became aware of the activities of a major criminal organisation operating in the Alicante region. The group, comprised of individuals of Albanian origin, was suspected of smuggling and distributing substantial quantities of cocaine.

Launching an intensive investigation, o cers carefully tracked the movements of the criminals, who took extreme precautions to avoid detection. They travelled abroad frequently and maintained multiple residences, using seemingly legitimate companies to register the warehouse and vehicles involved in their illicit operations, all

in an attempt to disguise their illegal activities and launder drug proceeds.

The breakthrough in the case came when authorities intercepted several containers arriving at the port of Malaga from Ecuador. Collaborating with foreign law enforcement agencies, they suspected that these containers, which were o cially transporting bananas, might also contain narcotics. Two of the containers were bound for Alicante, prompting authorities to discreetly monitor their journey from Malaga.

The operation culminated with the containers being unloaded at an industrial estate in Alicante’s Llano del Espartal. Undercover investigators, donning re ective work attire to blend in, observed the criminals in the act of unloading the containers, unaware of the police closing in on them.

Upon inspection, the shocking discovery was made - along with the declared bananas, the containers concealed almost 400 packages of cocaine, weighing an astonishing 4,800 kilograms and carrying a staggering estimated street value of over €265

million.

The culprits, all Albanian males aged between 28 and 40, were swiftly arrested and now face charges of belonging to a criminal organisation and drug tra cking. Laboratory tests con rmed the high purity of the seized drugs, making this one of the most signi cant drug busts in recent history.

The operation extended beyond the warehouse raid, with additional searches conducted in Alicante and Elche, leading to the seizure of substantial evidence, approximately €6,000 in cash, and four high-end vehicles.

Record number of shoppers for Zenia Boulevard

Local shopping centre, Zenia Boulevard has recently experienced an extraordinary surge in visitors. According to the management, the shopping mall located on the Orihuela Costa has witnessed an astounding in ux of 6,465,702 shoppers during the rst six months of 2023. This impressive gure marks an 18% increase compared to the same period last year.

Since its grand opening in September 2012, Zenia Boulevard

has been a popular destination for shoppers, leisure seekers, and tourists alike. With the latest wave of visitors, it seems to be on track to shatter all previous records for annual footfall. The management is optimistic about surpassing last year’s total of 13.8 million visitors, and the peak months of July and August are expected to play a signi cant role in achieving this feat.

Cristina Ros, Centre Manager, expressed her delight in the thriving

numbers, stating, “Based on the rst six months, 2023 will be a very positive year, and we will exceed the 13.8 million total achieved last year.”

To further enhance the shopping experience and maintain its position as the prime retail destination in the region, Zenia Boulevard has an impressive €18 million improvement plan underway. This substantial investment is focusing on enhancing the facades, pavements, and rest areas throughout the complex.

The management has been mindful of minimising any disruption to shoppers and retailers during the improvement phase. As such, the bulk of the renovation work is scheduled to take place during the autumn, with a signi cant portion of it happening at night. This strategic approach will ensure that shops and restaurants can continue with their normal opening hours, o ering an uninterrupted shopping and dining experience to the visitors.

Polish fugitive arrested in Orihuela

A Polish national who had been on the run for over two decades after a fatal shooting in 1997 was nally captured by the Policia Nacional in Orihuela. The suspect, who was a member of a notorious cross-border smuggling gang operating in the nineties, had ed Poland after the killing and had been the subject of a European Arrest Warrant.

According to recent Polish investigations, the body of a man who had disappeared in the Lower Silesia area of the country was discovered having died from gunshot wounds. Two Polish citizens were identi ed as the main suspects, both of whom ed the country in an attempt to evade justice. One of the suspects was eventually apprehended in the Warsaw area, but the other managed to escape to Spain.

Upon receiving crucial information from Polish authorities regarding the whereabouts of the remaining fugitive, the Fugitive Tracking Section of the Policia Nacional launched an extensive investigation. The trail led them to an address in Orihuela, where the suspect was reportedly living with his partner. As the fugitive arrived at his home he was promptly arrested.

Increased support for expats in Torrevieja

The Torrevieja Councillor for International Residents Gitte Lund Thomsen has been re-elected and will continue her work supporting expats for another four years – a responsibility she has held since 2019. Here she discusses the ways she can help the international community…

One of the main topics and a ‘must do’ for international residents is to register on the padrón. The Padrón or empadronamiento is a register held in the Town Hall and lists residents who live in the town. People who live fulltime in the country need to register, so those who own or rent their ‘ rst home’ in Spain should go on the Padrón. If you have a holiday home in Spain, but will live mainly in your country of origin, then you don´t need to register on the padrón.

Previously, it was common in Spain for people to register on the Padron even when they only had a second property (holiday-home) here.

Gitte explained: “People might think that they are helping their local community by registering on the Padron so that the town can get more funds, but what we want is a realistic Padrón. Only people who are residents in Spain or in the process of becoming resident should register. When you register the rst time then I recommend you make an appointment with “Residentes Internacionales”.

“This can be done on the Town Hall website: www.torrevieja.es - Cita previa

- Residentes Internacionales. Here you will nd a choice of three o ces: Pangea, the little blue house near the harbour in Torrevieja town centre, or La Mata Town Hall in the little square Plaza Gaspar Perelló which is right behind the big square in La Mata town centre

or La Siesta, which is the little police station next to Age-Concern on Calle Paganini. The advantage of booking an appointment is that you then know that there will be sta available who speak English and so we can advise you on what documentation to bring to the appointment.

You can also send an email to: eu@ torrevieja.eu and we can guide you through whatever questions you might have and set up an appointment when needed and in the o ce that suits you.”

Services at La Siesta

Recently the o ce next to Ageconcern in La Siesta has been sta ed. The main function in this o ce is to deal with “vado permanente” which is the sign and permit you need if you have to drive your car across a public pavement to get to your driveway. They are also dealing with application for disabled parking badges.

If you speak Spanish then they will attend without prior appointment, but if you would like to be attended in English then you need to book an appointment with Residentes Internacionales and the department will help with translation.

EU-citizens and long-term British residents who have got their residencia need to con rm their padrón every ve years. Non-EU-citizens this includes the Brits getting residencia after Brexit need to renew their padrón every two years.

The date of reference is the rst time you register, and the date can be found on the padrón certi cate as “fecha de alta”. If people need an updated certi cate because their health centre asks or they might need it for an application or purchase then an individual certi cate can be taken out online with your digital signature at: www.torrevieja. sedeelectronica.es - Catálogo de

trámites - AUT01 Solicitud de Certi cado de Empadronamiento Individual (AUTOMATIZADO).

To get a digital signature you need to go to the PROP o ce next to the Town Hall in Plaza de la Constitución without prior appointment or you can book an

appointment at any Suma o ce on www.suma.es.

Gitte added: “We are here to help and support all international residents. If you need help with any other aspects please email: eu@torrevieja.eu and we will do our best assist you.”

Beware beach drinks in Benidorm

Tourists visiting the popular coastal destination of Benidorm have been cautioned about potential health hazards associated with purchasing cocktails from unauthorised beach vendors. The resurgence of so-called “mojiteros” has led to increased illegal activities on the city’s sandy shores, prompting local politicians to take action.

The PSOE party has raised concerns about the reemergence of untrained masseurs and vendors selling drinks, particularly mojitos, without proper authorisation. Socialist spokesperson, Cristina Escoda, expressed her dismay at the growing number of vendors, stating that their presence had “increased” since the onset of summer.

She highlighted the consequences of such unregulated sales, stating: “Taking a simple walk, you can see an incessant trickle of people carrying out these illegal activities with total normality. This not only a ects the image we o er to tourists but also seriously harms the city’s hospitality sector.”

Moreover, the PSOE

representative raised a serious health concern, emphasising the unhygienic practices employed by the mojiteros. She stated that these vendors handle their products with bare hands, often in unsanitary conditions, posing a risk to consumers’ health due to the lack of sanitary controls.

In response to these alarming developments, she called on the PP government to take swift action and implement measures to address the issue. She suggested increasing police presence on the beaches and initiating informative campaigns aimed at raising awareness among residents and tourists alike.

Benidorm city council has acknowledged the severity of the situation and taken steps to bolster security on the beaches during the peak summer season. They have substantially increased the number of o cers dedicated to surveillance on the sandy shores, with up to 16 o cers stationed during the busiest hours.

The council spokesperson explained, “The surveillance is not limited to the beach and promenades alone. It extends to the water and even the air with

the assistance of zodiac boats and drones.”

Additionally, the city council is set to launch an information campaign designed to educate visitors on how to best enjoy Benidorm’s beaches. The campaign will include health recommendations, particularly regarding the impact of heat and high temperatures, and will also caution tourists against consuming drinks without proper sanitary control.

Simultaneously, the Local Police will continue to actively combat unauthorised practices on the beaches, taking legal action against o enders. Any illegal vendors caught will be prosecuted, and their products will be con scated.

The collaborative e orts of the city council and local authorities aim to maintain the safety and integrity of Benidorm’s beautiful beaches, ensuring that tourists can enjoy their vacations without compromising their health or falling victim to illegal activities. As summer continues, vigilance and public awareness remain critical in combatting these issues and preserving the city’s reputation as a premier tourist destination.

Historic moment for British Passports

In a signi cant milestone for the United Kingdom, British passports will now bear the title of ‘His Majesty’ for the rst time in seven decades. Home Secretary Suella Braverman made the historic announcement today, revealing that the passports will be issued in the name of His Majesty King Charles III. The change in salutation comes as the His Majesty’s Passport O ce gears up to serve British citizens during the busy summer period. In the rst half of 2023, the o ce processed over 5 million passports, with an impressive 99% of them issued within the standard UK service time of 10 weeks. Notably, the vast majority of these passports were delivered well within this timeline, with over 90% handed out within just 3 weeks. This represents a remarkable improvement from 2022, when 95.4% of passports were issued within the 10-week timeframe.

The remarkable boost in performance can be credited to a series of strategic measures implemented to overcome challenges faced in early 2022. These initiatives included process improvements, signi cant advancements in digital systems, enhanced

access to exible resources, and the introduction of a second supplier of customer contact services. Together, these steps have enabled HM Passport O ce to consistently meet high performance standards and deliver exemplary customer service.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman expressed her gratitude for the dedicated e orts of the entire HM Passport O ce team, highlighting the momentous occasion in British history. For the past 70 years, British passports have featured the title of ‘Her Majesty,’ and this change signi es a new era as the nation welcomes the rst passports bearing the title of ‘His Majesty, the King.’

The history of British passports dates back to 1414 during the reign of Henry V, when documents known as “safe conduct” were used. However, it wasn’t until 1915 that the rst modern-style British passports, complete with photographs and signatures, were introduced. Over the years, British passports underwent numerous advancements in security features, including watermarks, holograms, and elaborate printed patterns,

claims.

Lawyers representing Spain’s scandal-ridden former king, Juan Carlos I, have appeared before a London court to seek the dismissal of a £126 million claim for damages led against him by his former lover, DanishGerman businesswoman Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, 59, also known as Corinna Larsen.

along with the introduction of the polycarbonate page to ensure the authenticity of each document.

The introduction of burgundycoloured machine-readable passports came in 1988, followed by the iconic blue cover’s reintroduction in 2020 after the UK’s departure from the European Union.

As the nation embraces this historic change in passport salutation, the Home Secretary urges the public to apply for passports in a timely manner, considering the outstanding service and e ciency provided by the HM Passport O ce during this pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

In her lawsuit, Corinna alleges that Juan Carlos, who abdicated the throne in 2014, caused her “great mental pain” through spying and harassment. The former monarch and Corinna were in an “intimate romantic relationship” between 2004 and 2009, during which Juan Carlos showered her with lavish gifts, according to court records.

Adam Wolanski, the lawyer representing Juan Carlos, strongly denied the allegations, stating that his client “emphatically denies ever having harassed the claimant.” He further argued that the case lacked realistic prospects of success, citing insu cient evidence to support Corinna’s

In response, Corinna’s legal team rejected the “strike out” application, calling it “misconceived” and urging the court to refuse it. Lawyer Jonathan Caplan, representing Corinna zu Sayn-WittgensteinSayn, accused Juan Carlos of attempting to obstruct the court’s determination of the claim.

The relationship between Juan Carlos and Corinna became public in 2012 when the former king su ered a hip injury while vacationing with her in Botswana, leading to public outrage amid Spain’s high unemployment rates. In 2014, Juan Carlos abdicated the throne at the age of 76 due to mounting scandals and health issues, passing the crown to his son, Felipe VI, who has since distanced himself from his father. In 2020, Juan Carlos chose self-imposed exile in the United Arab Emirates to avoid further controversies.

Corinna’s allegations against Juan Carlos include claims

of harassment following the breakdown of their relationship, involving threats, break-ins at her properties, and surveillance. She pointed out instances where gunshots damaged security cameras at her front gate, alleging that they were in retaliation for her refusals.

A signi cant legal development occurred in December, when three appeal judges in London ruled that Corinna could not sue Juan Carlos for harassment during his reign. However, they left open the possibility of pursuing the former monarch for alleged misconduct after his abdication.

The court proceedings in London have drawn considerable attention, given the prominent status of the former king and the serious nature of the allegations. As the case continues, the world watches closely to see how justice will be served in this high-stakes legal battle that transcends international borders.

Are Your Savings Still In The UK?

Many people who have moved to Spain do not want to bring all their savings and investments with them to this country. Spanish banks do not have a great track record and then there is currency question – Sterling or convert to Euros?

One of the main problems with keeping your money in the UK, is a lack of adviser to keep an eye on your investments and switch funds when the need arises. Your UK nancial adviser should not continue to work on your behalf if you are living as a Spanish tax resident.

Another problem is that UK based savings like ISA’s, Premium Bonds and other NS&I products are not suitable for

Spanish residents.

As a Spanish tax resident there are a number or products o ered by some of the worlds’ largest nancial institutions speci cally tailored to meet your investment needs. Indeed, one such provider, Prudential International, have a Spanish tax compliant savings bond that outperforms the UK equivalent simply because of the taxation treatment.

Here at Seagate Wealth we understand that many ex-pats do not wish to bring their money to Spain and for that reason we work with a number of product providers to ensure their money works as hard as possible with minimum risk. The

Prudential savings bond o ers clients a way to grow their money virtually tax-free, with no need to report on their annual tax return or the Modelo 720. The other major bene t is the money is not held here in Spain, but in the Republic of Ireland.

The Seagate team has a wealth of experience in providing advice on all aspects of savings and investment options. If you have an investment, but no adviser, we can help to get your portfolio back on track.

Work begins on the enlargement of the rainwater storage basin next to the N-332

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, the Councillor for Urban Services, Sandra Sánchez; the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Concha Sala; the manager of AGAMED, Jorge Ballesta, the deputy manager, Gemma Cruz, and the Head of Works of AGAMED, Miguel Mazón, met this morning with the property managers and residents of the urbanization Doña Inés and Jardines del Mar, to inform them of all the details of the works to extend the rainwater collection basin on the left bank of the N-332 road, which began on Monday 17 July, and which receives water from the collection basin annexed to the Los Mercados site and from the ditch on the east bank of the N-332.

The AGAMED manager pointed out that, given the low storage capacity (approximately 2,000 m3) of the existing lamination pond, even in low intensity rainfall, the pond lls and over ows, causing ooding in the Doña Inés housing estate, sometimes making it necessary to cut o tra c and making it impossible for residents to access and leave their homes.

In order to minimise ooding in the Doña Inés housing estate, and given the size of the ows owing into the area where the lamination basin is located, it has been considered necessary to

enlarge the existing lamination basin, so as to have a greater storage capacity (14,000 m3) for the water from the existing transversal drainage works. This will minimise ooding in the Doña Inés housing development and on the N-332 road.

The projected surface area

of the lamination basin is 4,533 square metres and the average depth is 3.2 metres. The overall budget is 570,505 euros (VAT included) and the works are expected to take ve months to complete, so they are expected to be nished before the end of the year.

More than 2,000 youngsters will attend sportcamps

The Councillor for Sports of the City of Torrevieja, Diana Box Alonso, reports on the activities that are being developed during the month of July, and will continue during the month of August. In the words of the mayor “is being a summer with intense sporting activity both locally, nationally and internationally”. The sports camps, managed by local clubs, have dominated the calendar throughout the month of July. There have been a total of 14 sports disciplines such as triathlon, tennis, multisport, swimming, football, rhythmic gymnastics and taekwondo. More than 500 young athletes have enjoyed their favourite sport while improving their technique and learning new tactics.

Not only local clubs are holding sports camps in the municipal facilities, but international academies are also doing the same. During the rst three weeks of July, the Norwegian football academy FPN SPANIA has been developing its campus for boys and girls in which they have combined tactical and technical sports training, both individually and in teams. Diana Box wanted to highlight that “the sports tourism unit of the council is doing a great job in this regard. The presence of international teams and academies throughout the year is already a reality.

Once again this year, the Sports Department, the adapted sports club CADA and the APANEE association have joined forces to carry out the adapted multisport summer camp for children with functional diversity. During the last fortnight of July and the rst fortnight of August, these children and young people will be able to enjoy a summer full of fun sporting activities,

promoting integration and work-family balance.

During the rst week of July, Torrevieja CF, together with Valencia CF, held a sports clinic for boys and girls. Dozens of players from the municipal sports schools experienced a week full of activities and training to improve their technique under the guidance of the professionals of this rst division team.

The Torrevieja International Cup of football, futsal and volleyball took all the attention at the beginning of this month with more than 1,500 sportsmen and women competing for the title of champion. Local teams were also present at this tournament which has become a tradition both in the summer and at Easter.

On the weekend of 8-9 July, the Spanish Finswimming Championships were held at the municipal swimming pools, with the presence of more than a hundred swimmers. The municipal swimming courses, for boys and girls from 5 to 14 years old, are also taking place during this month of July, and will continue during the month of August. Dozens of children are learning to swim, having fun and enjoying the water.

The sporting activity will continue during the month of August with the 45th Tennis Tournament “Ciudad de Torrevieja”, which will take place from 29 July to 6 August at the Torrevieja Tennis Club. The CHS receives 24 contributions due to the revision of the Special Drought Plan

Four town halls and twenty other associations or groups have submitted observations that are being used to improve the plan proposal submitted for public consultation.

During the consultation and public information period, the Segura OA Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) has received a total of 24 contributions on the occasion of the review it is carrying out of the Special Drought Plan for the demarcation.

The revision of the drought plans is carried out periodically every six years and in any case in the two years following the revision of the hydrological plan, in a procedure that has been carried out at the same time in all the inter-community river basin districts.

Of the observations and suggestions received, individuals, groups and associations have sent 20, while the other 4 come from town halls and entities that manage urban supply.

Once the public consultation phase is over, the basin organization must prepare a report analyzing the proposals, observations and suggestions received and incorporate into the nal document those that it considers appropriate.

With the result of this incorporation and that of the environmental evaluation that is also being processed, the report of the Water Council of the Demarcation will be requested, prior to the referral of the plan to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, for its approval.

Drought Emergency Plans for urban supplies

In turn, and as stated in the National Hydrological Plan Law (PHN) in its article 27, public administrations that serve urban supplies to a population of more

than 20,000 inhabitants are also obliged to have their own Emergency Plan in situations of drought.

In the case of the Segura hydrographic demarcation, there are 25 Public Administrations that are a ected by this obligation, 24 town halls and the Commonwealth of the Taibilla Canals, most of which have already submitted their emergency plans to the Confederation, which has informed them prior to their approval by each of the aforementioned entities.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

GBP

Having rallied from under 1.2400 to over 1.3000 in the space of two months, GBP/USD hit the bu ers this week, slipping back under 1.2850 by Thursday afternoon. Fuelling the turnaround was the latest UK in ation report. Headline in ation declined to a slightly more respectable 7.9% on an annual basis during June, having been predicted to have fallen from 8.7% previously, to around 8.2%. Remarkably, that is the rst time that headline in ation has fallen to below 8% for over a year. That line is almost worth repeating.

There was also a slight beat for core in ation, which strips out food, energy, alcohol and tobacco, which dipped to 6.9% on an annual basis, from 7.1% beforehand. Aside from the big drop in the pound, the news also helped to shift future expectations for BoE rate hikes, with the key market-implied terminal (or nal) rate shifting down from 6% to 5.75%. The moves were aided by a drop among key UK gilt yields. Despite the news on in ation, worries over a weakening UK economy persist, with recent data highlighting a drop in monthly GDP during May, declining by 0.1%, having risen by 0.2% in the previous month. However, that gure actually beat estimates of a 0.3% decline. The broad manufacturing sector is also feeling the pinch, with production declining by 0.2% over the past month, combined with a sharp 0.6% decline among Industrial Production.

There was some upbeat news from the consumer side on Friday morning, with con rmation that UK Retail Sales had risen by 0.7% during June, beating estimates of a 0.2% gain, and 0.1% previously. Annual declines have now trimmed to -1%, from -1.5% expected and -2.3% previously.

Whilst the UK economy has therefore somehow just about been able to avoid a dip into a recession so far this year, the outlook still remains fragile, and the improving in ation outlook could perhaps not have come at a better time for the BoE. The last (50bps) rate

Miguel Hernandez International Poetry Prize opens forentries

hike was made at the end of June, and so the latest in ation report will not have been in uenced in any way by that big hike. Mervyn King, who was the BoE governor before Andrew Bailey, has been on the wires warning of a potential UK recession risk, were the BoE tighten by too much, which still seems a reasonable assessment. He suggested that the BoE have been ignoring money supply data.

In the meantime, the pound is still adjusting to a lower rate outlook, with GBP/EUR falling below 1.1500 for the rst time since May. GBP/USD is another beast altogether, and whilst the knee-jerk sello is understandable, the path forward is somewhat trickier to navigate, given the additional impact of the broadly weakening dollar.

EURO

Much the same as in the US, the ECB are fully expected to hike Euro area rates by 0.25% at next week’s meeting. In ation may have moderated a tad, with regional harmonized CPI dropping to 5.5% from 6.1% previously, but much the same as every other major central bank, they will not rest until in ation hits their target level of 2%.

Despite this, a slight shift in language may be the rst sign of a wavering ECB, with comments this week from the ECB’s Klaas Knot, who suggested that there may not be any further rate hikes beyond this month’s expected 25bps move. Avid readers of our commentaries will be aware of Knot’s ongoing hawkishness, so when he said (on rate hikes) that ‘anything beyond July it would be a possibility, but by no means a certainty’ there is clearly a growing possibility that the ECB could soon be joining the ‘one and done’ club.

Therefore, what the ECB have to say next week is key and is likely to have a big impact on the single currency. Talking of which, EUR/USD rallied al of the way up to 1.1275, before consolidating earlier in the week, and dropping to a one-week low below 1.1150, as the dollar found some worthy support.

Two injured after car hits bar terrace inCatral

Two people have been injured after the collision of a car on the terrace of a bar in Catral. The events occurred around 6:00 p.m. this Thursday afternoon when a vehicle that was driving along Avenida la Purísima de Catral, the main avenue in the town, left the road and collided with the terrace of a bar and also ended

up a ecting the terrace of the adjoining establishment. A SAMU unit and a Basic Life Support unit have traveled there, whose health teams have treated a 75-year-old woman for polytrauma and a 37-yearold man for polycontusions.

Both have been transferred to the Vega Baja de Orihuela Hospital in separate

ambulances. At the moment, the reason for the accident is unknown, as well as the number of people who were on the terrace at that time and whether the injured were in the vehicle or not.

The Local Police of Catral, which has also intervened, has sealed o both terraces for security.

I met my second husband on a dating App. I am 68 and he is 54. He swept me off my feet from the word go, and I fell for the banter having come from a very cold and unhappy relationship with my former abusive husband. My new man pushed for marriage 10 months after we met; I was in love so I went for it. I wanted a fairly nice wedding, as I told him I’d only had a registry office one the first time; he said we couldn’t afford one, and really bells should have rung then. He said he had money; his house turned out to be

rented, and I have discovered other anomalies since. We live in my house, which I own. None of his family or friends came to the wedding; I know nothing about his former life, and I suspect what he’s told me to be lies, because his stories are not consistent. He said he works for himself, and uses one of the bedrooms as his ‘office’, however every time I walk in, he’s playing computer games, and then he’s off down the Pub as soon as it’s open. I pay for everything from my pension, which is ample, and we are comfortable - (I’ve also had a

few inheritances), but he’s contributed nothing, and takes everything; and his former affection for me has vanished. I decided to confront him, and he called me a callous cow for wanting to end our relationship

If you haven’t yet seen a solicitor, then please do. Romance scams are a confidence trick, are not only limited to the Internet and chat rooms, but can evolve in to permanent relations, where the victim is persuaded into marriage. Whatever the situation, you have said you do not wish to stay in this relationship, and so a lawyer can help you to get out.

Orihurla funeral parlour goes green

The Vega Baja Mortuary, in Orihuela, will save the atmosphere some 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent of some 500 trees planted. In a real commitment to clean and renewable energies, a photovoltaic project has been carried out in this centre in recent months, involving an investment of 30,000 euros.

This new improvement, which aims to contribute to reducing the environmental impact, comes in addition to the installation last September 2022 of a new crematorium oven with a puri cation system. A major project that has cost Grupo ASV Servicios Funerarios half a million euros. With this change, the crematorium adapts to the new regulatory requirements of the Valencian Community and even guarantees that the emission values will be below those established by the Community regulations.

“All this translates into a more e cient and sustainable funeral parlour at the forefront of the funeral sector, and our priority is to contribute to reducing the environmental impact in our eld,” explains Miguel Brotons, Director of Purchasing and Quality at Grupo ASV.

Health and climate action

Health and climate action have become key points in the raison d’être and strategic plan of

Grupo ASV Servicios Funerarios, which has managed to add 13 self-consumption photovoltaic installations with an investment of close to 400,000 euros to the one in Orihuela.

The company began this project in 2019 with the installation of 200 solar panels at its headquarters in Alicante and the commitment to replicate this model in other of its facilities. Since then, it has extended this project by setting up points of solar energy in some of its main tanatorios both in the Valencian Community and in Andalusia.

With these 13 solar energy points, an estimated self-consumption of over 28% is achieved. In addition, it is calculated that around 300 tonnes of carbon dioxide are saved in the atmosphere each year, equivalent to more than 7,000 trees planted.

The province of Alicante is the one with the highest concentration of e cient centres with installations already operating in Alicante, Villajoyosa, Torrevieja, Elche, Dénia, San Joan d’Alacant, San Vicente del Raspeig and now also Orihuela. In addition, a tender is currently pending for the photovoltaic project at the Almeria Mortuary and the extension of panels at all the centres already in operation.

Pioneers in puri cation systems

This environmental commitment is also transferred to other types of installations within the funeral

centres. In fact, Grupo ASV is a pioneer in incorporating puri cation systems in its crematoriums. Throughout 2022 it implemented this system in the Dénia and Orihuela morgues. Two installations that have involved an investment of close to 1 million euros.

“This data makes us, to date, one of the funeral companies with the largest number of more e cient and sustainable facilities and the one that has been working on this for the longest time. And one of the most pioneering and at the forefront in terms of atmospheric emissions from crematoriums, with the priority being to reduce emissions for the bene t of public health and the environment,” concludes Brotons.

“The WiFi in my house does not reach everywhere I need it. What can I do?”

If you have trouble getting WiFi signal in some corners of your property. What should you try rst?

A general rule of thumb in home networking says that WiFi routers can reach up to 46 metres indoors and 92 metres outdoors.

The simplest is to try moving the location of your WiFi router. It should be in the most central location possible. If this is not possible consider the following.

Options to increase Wi-Fi Range

1. Add another router – run a network cable to another WiFi router.

2. Use a WiFi Repeater - connects to your network wirelessly and rebroadcasts your existing network signal. Each repeater needs to be in WiFi range of a WiFi source.

3. Use a Wi Extender - A WiFi

extender connects directly to your router and creates a new WiFi network.

4. Use a Powerline AdapterLike a WiFi booster, a Powerline adapter is directly connected to a router via an Ethernet cable. The adapter is then plugged into a power socket, allowing network data to travel via the electrical system into a receiving adapter in another location.

“I am paying for 600Mbps Fibre Optic internet but can only manage just under 50 on my PC. Why?“

You will get the maximum available download speed if you can connect your computer to your router using an Ethernet cable. Wi-Fi will usually be slower especially if the router is not near your computer. Unless you have hardware that will be able to use the higher internet download speeds you will not get anywhere near the maximum contracted download speed

If you have several devices that connect to your network at the same time (even if they can’t operate at high speeds) everyone will be able to use the internet without bu ering Brian Hoile Technology Help Group

Elche CF match day experience

There is nothing quite like live sport and there is nothing quite like a home game in the Martinez Valero!

It’s match day. You awake full of anticipation and apprehension, fully prepared with your scarf, shirt and season ticket. The excitement builds as you arrive at the stadium to meet fellow franjiverde supporters. Access on match day is simple and there is free parking around the stadium for the early arrivers. You join the ag waving crowed and the infamous green wig wearing fans to welcome the team buses. Cheering as the green coach emblazoned with the Elche CF Crest rolls past, carrying the players and our hopes and dreams with it.

The bars around the base of the stadium are buzzing with football focused talk as the odd pre match cerveza or two are enjoyed! The Elche CF store is always busy with fans checking out new editions. Heading into the stadium, we pause to admire the majestic curves and the beautifully maintained grass where the players are warming up for the battle which lies ahead. Greeting your neighbouring season ticket holders, you reminisce together about matches already played in this 33,000 seater 1982 world cup venue. The club mascot, the Elche Fox, parades around the pitch and joins the team photo to the delight of the numerous younger fans, who give the club it’s well renowned family feel.

Then the magic starts. The rst notes of the famous Aromas Ilicitanos hymen are played and every single fan is on their feet with their scarves held proudly aloft. The whistle blows and the drums beat as the game begins.

Being a season ticket holder last season was not easy.

Despite this, the atmosphere was fantastic with chants of Si Su Puede, Yes We Can! Faith was restored during the last six games as the new manager worked wonders, the highlight being a 1-0 win against the mighty Atletico Madrid This season it is all about pushing for promotion back to La Liga, which on paper and in the hearts of the fans is a very real prospect.

The emotional Mediterranean’s excessive excitement and passion are all part of the enjoyment. Their goal celebrations are something to behold and their response to dubious referring decisions can be heard far and wide.

Many of you well know the feeling and bene t of being a season ticket holder, you can experience this once again here in Spain. This is the perfect time to become part of the Elche CF Footy Family. The season tickets are excellent value working out between 6€ and 10€ per game for the 21 xtures, plus other bene ts such as a discount in the club shop! Another massive advantage of becoming a season ticket holder this season is the memories that you’ll create as we push for promotion, and the knowledge that you’ll have your seat for when we are welcoming the La Liga teams to the Martinez Valero once again.

Elche CF are committed to helping non Spanish speakers

become season ticket holders. From the 31st July you can reserve an appointment at the stadium to buy your ticket, or purchase it online on www. elchecf.es

An even easier option is to jump on the EuroTourGuide Coach and join the well established football family of Season Ticket Holders who have been supporting the Elche for 4 seasons. There is a special discounted rate for travel for Season Ticket Holders, lots of friendly banter on the bus between the supporters who are a mix of couples, singles, groups and di erent nationalities, who all love the Elche and their football.

Jessica and David from EuroTourGuide have been working with Elche CF since 2018 and this year are very proud to be featuring in the Season Ticket campaign. If you are interested in becoming a season ticket holder and bene ting from the discounted travel, please email Jessica on jessicahayes@ eurotourguide.com or phone 0034 679 359 596.

Campoverde Church summer club is coming soon

They say it takes a village to raise a child; well, in Campoverde it takes the village to make sure the kids have all they need for their annual Church Summer Club. Recently we have been blessed to receive a number of items needed to get our Summer Club started.

Given the hot weather in Spain during August we needed something to shade the children during their afternoon activities in the Church Garden. We were delighted when a local business, Bits and Bobs Construction and Handyman Services, quickly o ered to donate two gazebos. We are very grateful to “Bob the Builder” for this very generous donation. The photo shows “Bob the Builder” delivering the new gazebos.

Each year we are always looking for new ideas and ways to involve the kids. This year one of our themes will be God in nature and in the Church Garden. Firstly we needed nesting boxes for birds and then an Insect Hotel. When we designed these we needed someone who had the woodworking skills to produce the frames for us, but more importantly we needed someone with a strong community focus to take on the task.

There was only one man we had in mind! Alan Harris. Alan, willingly made us all our nesting boxes, and then stepped up to the mark again and made the frame of our insect hotel. Alan has used his skills and commitment to help the Church and the wider community. Thank you,

Alan. The photos show Alan with the nesting bxes and the insect hotel. We have received many other donations and o ers of help which we will report on as the Summer Club progresses.

Campoverde Church in the Community Summer Club runs each year for kids in the village. This year it is taking place on the rst four Thursdays in August (3, 10, 17, 24) from 10am to 3pm. Each day there is a programme of morning sports and games, lunch and then afternoon crafts, all with a sprinkling of God. Registration for the Summer Club is free but we rely on the generosity, support and input of our community. If you would like to know more, contact Maggie Dew on maggieruthdew@hotmail.com.

Amy Dowden says doctors have discovered she has ‘another type of cancer’ after her initial breast cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

The Strictly Come Dancing star, 32, was diagnosed with aggressive stage three breast cancer in May. She found a lump while preparing for her honeymoon with husband Ben Jones in April and shared her diagnosis weeks

later.

The professional dancer has since had an operation, a mastectomy and has had fertility treatment.

However, during an Instagram

Live chat with breast cancer survivor and Paralympic gold medalist Erin Kennedy for the charity CoppaFeel! on Friday, Amy revealed the devastating news cancer had been found elsewhere in her body.

Coronation Street fans stunned as Stephanie Davis’ character seduces teen Aadi Alahan in racy sex scenes and claim she will ‘eat him alive’

Coronation

Street fans were left stunned on Thursday night as Stephanie Davis ’ character

Courtney Vance seduced teen Aadi Alahan in steamy sex scenes.

The former Hollyoaks actress, 30, recently made her debut in the ITV soap as businessman Darren Vance’s wife and she

wasted no time in getting acquainted with Dev Alahan’s son.

While Aadi has been frustrated that his role as Darren’s apprentice has been relegated to a glori ed assistant to his glamorous wife Courtney, Dev saw it as an opportunity to get his son convince the pair to allow him to come in on a partnership to take over the Freshco supermarket business.

And it seems that Dev’s (Jimi Harkishin) plan worked in recent scenes, but as the father and son celebrated the business deal in the Rovers, Aadi (Adam Hussein) soon rushed out after he received a text message.

Arriving at the office expecting to meet boss Darren (Ryan Early), he was surprised to nd Courtney there alone and she quickly made it clear that she wanted him for more than his business acumen.

Benefits of swimming for the recovery of injuries

Swimming, as explained by the specialists of the Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Service of Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “is one of the most complete and healthiest sports“, so much so that specialists recommend it for everyone without limitation of age or physical condition, and especially for those who have back problems, for pregnant women and for the recovery of injuries.

We spoke with the traumatologists of Quirónsalud Torrevieja to talk to us about the e ectiveness of swimming to relieve pain in di erent parts of the body.

Bene ts of swimming

At the traumatological level, it allows repeated movements against resistance, while otation reduces the problems derived from the repetitive impact to which our own weight conditions, due to the e ect of gravity.

In turn, all exercise in the water requires an added e ort of balance that contributes to generate a sustained stimulus of proprioception, that is, communication, at the unconscious level of the position, inertia, speed, etc. of our joints, muscles, tendons, etc.

In addition, it accelerates the medullary re ex arc, the medulla is like a second brain, largely unconscious, which receives instant information and responds to it immediately generating contraction or relaxation of the muscles, in a coordinated way, which achieves the objective established by our conscious brain.

Swimming as a recovery treatment

Any ailment that a ects the musculoskeletal system can be treated, to the extent that practically any exercise that is usually performed for the recovery of injuries can be performed in the water.

Typically spinal injuries have been the subject of the recommendation of swimming as a treatment or as an aid to their treatment. But any injury is likely to bene t from the very special conditions that come with exercising in the water.

Swimming style according to the injury you have

Each injury presents nuances that require an adaptation of swimming or exercise in the water to their circumstance.

We can mention for example the recovery of the shoulder, this bene ts from exercises with the arms below the horizontal, or breaststroke swimming with a low stroke.

Recommendation of exercises in the water for the recovery of injuries.

Quirónsalud traumatologists recommend:

Swim in all its varieties, whether breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke or butter y, which exercise in each case di erent muscle groups.

In the water you can practice sports such as: aquagym, acua t, aquaagac, aquabalance, aquacardium, aquawater, acuaextrem, aquazumba, hydrospinning.

The possibilities are enormous considering that the bene ts of any

physical activity can be transferred and multiplied within the water by the e ect of lack of gravity, which decreases the impact of circulations and the fact that water o ers a constant resistance to movement that can be increased or reduced depending on the materials and the depth at which it is performed.

This is why spinning in water is a good option if you want to reduce that pressure of the intervertebral discs when sitting and exercising. The mere walk, if done barefoot allows to stimulate the sensory receptors of the feet when walking on the sand. Aquarunning consists of running in the water, and depending on where the water arrives, it will o er more or less resistance, which decreases the joint impact in the race and improves balance.

What is aquatic therapy?

The concept of aquatic therapy (Hydrotherapy) includes multiple aspects of our physiology and psychology. Not only those related to the musculoskeletal apparatus directly, but also those aimed at favouring its relaxing, toning, even chemical e ects if done at sea, which represent an immense therapeutic arsenal, which properly used and directed can contribute in a very signi cant way, not only to the treatment, but to the prevention of very diverse pathologies and the improvement of our health.

Bene ts of Aquatic Therapy

Among the bene ts of aquatic therapy we nd

The ability to produce a decrease in

muscle contractures.

Relief of low back pain and tendinitis, among others. Sedative and analgesic action. Physical and psychic relaxation, which can help reduce stress and anxiety states.

In a very general way it can be said that hydrotherapy may be contraindicated in case of acute in ammation, active infections, fever, renal and cardiac failure and ocular, cutaneous pathologies…

In any case, the safest and most e ective is to perform, at least at the beginning, these exercises in a supervised manner and directed by a specialized monitor.

At Quirónsalud our specialists in traumatology will recommend the best treatment for your injury and will accompany you in the recovery process.

Honda: Type R EVs must ‘maximise pleasure of driving’

Firm’s technical advisor says Type R will continue if the right degree of “pleasure can be transported with an electric car”

Honda’s famous Type R badge will continue into the electric age if the right level of driving pleasure can be achieved by EVs, Ko Yamamoto, the rm’s technical advisor, has told Autocar.

Speaking at the launch of the new Honda e:Ny1 electric SUV in Norway, Yamamoto said: “Type R is an attribute that maximises the pleasure of driving and operation.

“If that pleasure can be transported with an electric car, then that car could be called a Type R”. Yamamoto also ruled out the possibility of the rm’s other models, the Honda CR-V, Honda HR-V and smaller Honda Jazz, ever receiving Type R performance models.

This means the current Civic Type R would be the nal combustion car to feature the iconic badge, before moving into an era of electri cation. However, Yamamoto added that the badge would not be going away any time soon. It comes shortly after Honda revealed a special track-only CR-V, powered by a high-performance 800bhp V6 hybrid engine.

I think Type R will always continue. If we have a full-electric society one day, there will still be Type Rs,” Yamamoto said.

“The Jazz, HR-V and CR-V… okay, so we’ve seen the CR-V Max Verstappen

was driving - that’s something di erent. As a race category, the base car needs to be suitable for a racing application rst.

“There’s still hope for the survival of the combustion engine for a certain time, as Honda has clearly stated their interest in e-fuels. But it’s not necessarily

obliged to use a combustion engine. It could be something electri ed or full electri ed.”

As for the rm’s existing electric lineup, which now comprises the Honda E and the e:Ny1, performance models are o the table.

Lewis Hamilton, demoralised by a wine-into-water opening lap, told a brutal one-line truth about himself: ‘I have not been at my best for over a year.’

The self-recrimination came as he nished fourth in the Hungarian Grand Prix after starting on pole. Max Verstappen predictably zoomed away to claim – deep breath – his ninth win in 11 races this season and seventh in succession, and a record consecutive

Brian Harman has won The Open after holding on to a six-shot lead in the nal round at Hoylake.

The American went one under par on Sunday to nish at -13, holding o late challenges from Jason Day and Tom Kim.

He landed a brilliant 40-foot putt to birdie the 14th hole that all but guaranteed the victory by taking him back to 12 under after a bogey earlier in the round.

From a jelly sh to a dinosaur, stick-man and ice-cream cone, yesterday’s penalty-scorer Georgia Stanway is adorned with a range of curious tattoos.

Stanway said she has ‘loads of random tattoos’, with an array of doodles dotting her left arm –including a ghost, balloon, heart and the words ‘lots and lots like jellytots’.

Her back is also inked with tattoos such as a game of noughts and crosses and a Love Heart sweet.
